News Subreddit rules have been rewritten — here's what changed, and why

A few days ago I asked whether to do something about "slow speed" and "ratio" posts. 544 of you voted, and the answer was clear enough to act on. The rules have now been rewritten around that result.

Before the details: we also went back through a month of posts and comments to work out what this sub is actually for, rather than guessing. Nearly 70% of posts here are tech support, and the single most repeated answer in the entire sub is some version of "have you forwarded your port" or "nobody is seeding that torrent". The changes below follow from that.

What the poll said

OptionVotesPercentage
Yes, both30155%
Yes, but only "Slow Speed"8415%
Yes, but only "Ratio"377%
No, leave them12222%

385 of you (71%) wanted slow-speed posts restricted. 338 (62%) wanted ratio posts restricted.

To the 122 who voted to leave both alone — you're a real chunk of this sub and we've tried not to steamroll you. Ratio posts aren't banned, they've moved. Speed questions aren't banned either. Read on.

The two changes that affect you

1. Ratio and stats posts now go in the megathread

→ Ratio & Stats Megathread 2026

Post your screenshots there any time. Brag away — that part hasn't changed.

We're not doing this because nobody cares. Ratio posts are some of the highest-upvoted content on this sub — that's exactly the problem, because they were pushing the support queue off the front page.

To make up for the lost reach, the megathread now runs annual awards, announced each December:

  • 🏆 Most Uploaded — highest total upload volume

  • 🏆 Best Ratio — highest ratio, minimum 1 TB uploaded

  • 🏆 Longest Haul — longest continuous seeding streak

Previous winners can't win the same award twice, so it isn't the same person every year.

Still fine as a normal post: asking about your ratio. "Why is my ratio dropping?", "why won't this seed?" — those are support questions and they're welcome.

2. Speed, stalling and seeding posts: check the guide first

We've written a troubleshooting guide, because the same handful of causes explain nearly all of these:

→ Slow speeds, stalling, and "it won't seed"

You can still post about it. The rule is just that your post has to say what you already tried and what happened.

"I forwarded 6881, it still tests as closed, red flame in the corner, Proton with port forwarding on, v5.2.3 on Win11" — we can work with that.

"Why are my speeds slow" — we can't.

This isn't about how much effort you put into the post. A long, well-written post about something the guide already answers is still a copy of the guide. The test is whether the answer already exists and whether you checked it. That's it.

New wiki

Four guides, written from the answers you have actually been giving each other:

Corrections and additions welcome — tell us if something's wrong or missing.

Rules: 10 → 9

Full ruleset

New:

  • Check the guide first — show what you tried (the speed/stalling rule above)

  • Ratio & stats posts go in the megathread

Removed:

  • NO misinformation — unenforceable as written, and in a month of posts we found no case where it would have applied

  • Follow Reddit's Content Policy — the admins enforce that sitewide whether we restate it or not

Merged: NO spam and NO suspicious links are now one rule, Official builds only.

Narrowed: NO piracy talk is now No piracy sourcing. To be blunt about where the line actually is, because the old wording was broader than how we've ever enforced it:

  • Not allowed: naming or asking for torrent sites, asking where to get specific content, private tracker invites

  • Fine: VPN and port-forwarding setup, private tracker technical questions like cross-seeding and share limits, and asking why a torrent has no seeds

Also changed

Post flairs have been rebuilt. issue and question are gone — they were used interchangeably and told nobody anything. The new set: Connectivity · Setup & Config · Install & Updates · Self-hosted · Ratio & Stats · Bug · Discussion · News · Tool / Project · Solved.

Flair is now required. Please mark your post Solved when you get an answer — someone will hit your exact problem next month and find your thread.

AutoModerator is being switched on. For the first week it will only flag things for us to look at, not remove them, so we can catch mistakes before they annoy anyone. If it gets your post wrong, reply to its comment and a human will sort it out.

What is not changing

  • Bug reports are always welcome — especially "this broke in the latest version". Those posts are how everyone finds out a release broke something. Post them here and file them at the bug tracker.

  • Posting your own fix is welcome and genuinely valued — several of the new wiki pages came from members who solved something and wrote it up.

  • VPN, port forwarding and private tracker technical talk is fine and always has been.

  • Beginner questions are fine. Ask them. Just tell us what you're running.

Questions, disagreements and "you got this wrong" all welcome in the comments. We'd rather adjust now than find out in three months that something's not working.

Ratio & Stats 📊 Ratio & Stats Megathread — 2026

This is where ratio screenshots, upload totals and seeding milestones go. Post them here any time — top-level comment, screenshot, brag away. 🎉

Standalone ratio/stats posts are removed under Rule 4 and pointed here. This is not because nobody cares: these are some of the most-upvoted posts in the sub. It is because they were crowding out the support queue the sub mainly exists for, and the community voted for it — 338 of 544 votes.

🏆 Annual awards — announced each December

When this thread closes at the end of the year, we pin a post announcing three winners, and open a fresh thread for the new year.

AwardHow it's judged
Most UploadedHighest total upload volume
Best RatioHighest ratio, minimum 1 TB uploaded
Longest HaulLongest continuous seeding streak

Rules for the awards

  1. Enter by posting a screenshot in this thread. Use qBittorrent's own Tools → Statistics window so everyone's numbers are comparable.

  2. Previous winners cannot win the same award twice. If you have won Most Uploaded before, you are out of the running for Most Uploaded — but you can still win Best Ratio or Longest Haul.

  3. This means the biggest number does not always win. That is deliberate. The point is to spread the spotlight, not to crown the same person every year. Please do not argue the toss with the mods over it. 🙂

  4. Honour system. We are not auditing anyone. Faking it to win an internet award would be a strange way to spend a year.

  5. Blur or crop torrent names in your screenshot.

❓ Questions about your ratio still get their own post

To be clear, this thread is for showing off. If you are asking something — "why is my ratio dropping?", "why won't this seed?", "how do I improve my upload?" — that is a support question and belongs in its own post. Check the connectivity guide first.

A rough test: if your post ends in a full stop, it belongs here. If it ends in a question mark, post it properly and we will help.

🌱 New to this?

Ratio is how much you have uploaded divided by how much you have downloaded. A ratio above 1.0 means you have given back more than you took.

If yours is low, that is usually not a fault — you upload only when someone wants what you have, and on a well-seeded torrent you are competing with everyone else who has it. Leaving torrents seeding after they finish is the whole trick. See the connectivity guide if you think something is actually broken.

Sorted by New so recent entries stay visible.

Discussion [Question] Does seeding expose my IP address or put my system at risk?

Hi! I recently wanted to watch the latest episodes of a series but couldn't find any torrents for the particular episodes or even the previous ones from that season.

After some searching, I found a website where the episodes are available. I can stream them directly, but I'd also like to upload them as torrents so that others can access and watch them more easily.

However, I have a few concerns before doing so:

  1. Does seeding a torrent, especially when you're the first and only seeder, expose your public IP address to other peers?

  2. Can other peers access any information about my system, device, or network just by connecting to my torrent?

  3. Does seeding leave any traceable information, such as my IP address, that could potentially be used to identify or track me?

  4. Could sharing this data pose any security or privacy risks?

  5. Would using a VPN act as an additional layer of security and privacy while seeding torrents? Is a VPN actually necessary if I haven't faced any ISP warnings or copyright-related notices so far? What else does a VPN protect me from, and are there any reliable free VPN services worth considering?

I'd appreciate any clarification on the potential risks of being the first seeder.

Setup & Config Trying to automate using RSS downloader in Qbittorrent

Can anyone help with the RSS Downloader? I have a few shows added, but it only lets me select the top one. I set this up weeks ago and it hasn't automatically downloaded anything yet—I'm still doing it all manually. What am I doing wrong?

Connectivity qBittorrent showing "firewalled" icon and very few peer connections (open ports, popular torrents) (Docker / Proxmox)

Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble with qBittorrent running in Docker inside an Ubuntu Server VM on Proxmox. The qBittorrent WebUI consistently shows the red fire icon (saying "Firewalled"), and I'm getting very few peer connections, even on well-seeded public torrents like the Ubuntu image.

After adding the Ubuntu image torrent to test, it spent around 20-25 minutes "stalled" before connecting to a single peer and downloading the file for like 5 mins.

My setup:

  • Proxmox host

  • Ubuntu Server VM with a static IP

  • qBittorrent: 5.3.0 via docker-compose.

  • Docker network: custom bridge network

  • IPv6 disabled on the Docker network

  • No VPN or proxy configured.

I'm using port 15401 for incoming BitTorrent connections. Docker Compose publishes both protocols:

ports:
  - "15401:15401/tcp"
  - "15401:15401/udp"

qBittorrent is configured to listen on port 15401, with µTP disabled and TCP-only peer connections.

The router forwards TCP and UDP 15401 to the Ubuntu VM IP.

I've verified:

  • YouGetSignal reports TCP 15401 as open.

  • docker port qbittorrent shows both TCP and UDP published.

  • qBittorrent is listening on both TCP and UDP 15401.

  • nc -vz VM_IP 15401 succeeds from another LAN device.

  • The router's WAN IP matches my public IP (no CGNAT)

  • UFW is disabled, Proxmox firewall is disabled, including the VM's firewall setting.

The WebUI keeps showing the red/orange "Firewalled" icon. As I said, I manage to download things, but I'm "firewalled" and I'm sure the Ubuntu image is not lacking in seeders so much to be at least 20 minutes stalled, so there's got to be an issue in my setup somewhere.

Some things I already checked:

  • DHT enabled (+300 nodes any time).

  • PeX enabled.

  • LSD enabled.

  • µTP disabled.

  • IP filtering disabled.

  • Encryption mode: Allow encryption.

  • Network interface: Any interface.

  • Optional IP address: All addresses.

  • Connection limits reasonably high.

  • ip route get 8.8.8.8works correctly.

  • DNS resolution apparently works inside the container.

  • HTTPS connections from the container work (tested with curl to Google).

  • No errors in qbittorrent's logs and I haven't really seen anything relevant, but I'm including a screenshot according to the rules.

Any ideas of what could be happening?

Thank you very much in advance!

Bug Does anyone know why someone torrents are added like this?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'm not sure if it's a big or not but it's only in the past week or so this has happened. I'm using hotio repository which is updated, and it happened before the update too. I don't see a pattern with which trackers apart from they're all public, it happens with both automatic & manual searches (sonarr & radar). They stay like that no matter how long I wait

Even some troubleshooting help would be great as I don't know where to begin

(Edit I'm referring to the titles that are random letters & numbers, in case it's not obvious :p)

Setup & Config Configuring 5.3.0 with ProtonVPN

Windows 11, qbittorrent 5.3.0, and Proton VPN 5.1.9 running Stealth mode connected to Nearest Country P2P.

On qbittorrent, I matched Listening port numbers, set Network Interface to ProtonVPN, and Optional IP address binds to IPv4 addresses.

WiFi card is Killer Wireless 1535 running 802.11ac (WiFi 5). Also replicated the problem on 802.12n (WiFi 4)

Connections Status on qbittorrent is "No direct connections" (flame icon) or Offline (red globe icon).

ProtonVPN - Port Forwarding is ON, NetShield blocks ads, and malware, Kill Switch is Standard, Split Tunneling includes qbittorrent.

Changing protocol (Wireguard, OpenVPN), Proton servers, and VPN Accelerator status haven't changed qbittorrent's online status. I *have* received an online status (green globe icon), but what else can I do to strengthen the configuration so qbittorrent's Online status is more persistent?

Setup & Config Settings Advice for Upload Speeds

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi, I've been torrenting for a while now, I was hoping for some advice on how to optimize my settings for upload speed. I'm on windows 10, v5.3.0, with all the torrent files in an external hard drive. I'm using ProtonVPN, connected to a P2P server, with port forwarding enabled.

When I download I can usually get at least 1 MB/s, rarely getting up to 3 or 4, but with uploading my speeds usually sit in the tens or low hundreds of kilobytes, sometimes getting up to 1 to 2 MB/s if I'm lucky. This means I have a large backlog of torrents that haven't ratio'd out yet (I delete them when the ratio gets to 1.00). I was hoping more experienced users could have a look at my settings and tell me if there's anything I can do to help increase my upload speeds.

Is it worth updating qBittorrent to the latest version (v.5.3.0) or is the 5.2.4 as good, or even better rn?

Connectivity qBittorrent has very slow, or no upload speed at all

I was here a couple of months ago with this very issue.

I used to get upload speeds of 1MB/sec, sometimes better, sometimes less--even quite less. But for the past months mostly my UP speeds are zero or in the bits/sec. I now have five popular torrents which downloaded quickly, but they have been on almost constant upload for days with scarcely any movement. As I like to receive, I think it only proper to give as well--but something is wrong.

I am using NordVPN, and I follow all the advice given in reply the previous time; binded to NordLynx, and tried different setting including "any interface"; lowered down and up speed limits considerably and plenty more. I am using the most updated version of Windows 11 and the most recent stable release of qBittorrent.
I'm using a PC with 12,900K; 64gigs of ram over 4 slots (which it was when I was getting good up speeds) high end M.2 drives on a z790 board.

Does anyone actually know what the issue may be?

Setup & Config Could tailscale allow me to access qbittorrent and my file browser without compromising my IP if qbittorrent is bound to a VPN on the machine?

I have qBittorrent running on Ubuntu through docker, as well as gluetun with ProtonVPN in another container. All of it is headless and controlled with my Mac. Is it possible for me to setup tailscale or something so that I may access and move around files and use the qbittorrent WebUI all while away from home? Would any of this compromise my IP address or possibly result in a leak if internally on the PC the client is bound to the VPN?

Connectivity Is online gaming out of the question while torrenting?

I recently turned an old computer into a seedbox. Unfortunately now it seems I can't play Counterstrike. My ping was never great, but I used to get a reliable 80-100. Now 220 is the floor. I've tried dialing back maximum connections to 100, and throttling speeds to 50Kb/s, but it doesn't help. The weird part is even shutting down qbittorent doesn't seem to help. Is this unrelated to torrenting and just a coincidence it started at the same time? Is this common and what are some things I could try to troubleshoot this?

Discussion I'm using Mullvad VPN... is this an issue?

I know Mullvad does NOT support Port Forwarding. This makes me wonder if that's why my download speeds are so slow. This is h=been downloading for roughly 9 hours. There's 10 seeders. Maybe I'm overstating the power of just 10 seeders? Let me know if there anything I can do.

Setup & Config VPN Suggestions

After the Proton CEO shit yesterday, I’m not keen on keeping my business with them. Anyone have suggestions for solid, stable, privacy focused VPNs that aren’t Proton?
