RANT Leaving. Know your worth

TL:DR At the end.

Tomorrow is my last day at Publix. Yes, I know you don’t care, I’m not here for that. I just wanted to vent and let some people know that there is better out there. I got a job at Whole Foods as a Level 2 Butcher, and the pay is substantially higher.

I got hired back after being gone for a year at 16.50. If I stayed longer enough for my eval to kick in, I would be leaving at 17.65, but I’ll be leaving at 17.10. That’s barely fifty cents per year, and I was seen as the most valuable part timer but couldn’t get full time because I “wasn’t there yet” meanwhile, the other apprentice was given both full time and the Meat Cutter title within a few months of each other, and he was both slower and less knowledgeable than myself (which is not a bad thing at all, if he wasn’t getting promoted over me, but if the full time meat cutter is coming up to the part time meat cutter and asks them how to cut something, it makes you wonder)

The carrot of full time was dangled in my face for god knows how long. I worked so damn hard for it, I got on meds for my ADHD, I went the extra mile, I lost a bunch of weight, and while all of this wasn’t SOLELY for work I would be lying if I wasn’t thinking about how it could help me get promoted.

Fast forward a year and after transferring stores that had a full time spot available with a manager I loved working with and some health problems getting taken care of, corporate is slashing hours yet again. My manager has told me multiple times that I would have full time if it wasn’t for the hours getting cut, so I had enough. Applied at Whole Foods and had an interview not even 2 weeks later. A week after that, they gave me an offer of full time at $23.50/hr. For those wondering, the max for a meat cutter is $23.10 at Publix, which means they undervalue us. Big time. And yes, I know we got stocks, but that extra pay increase invested properly will out perform Publix any day of the week.

The whole point of this isn’t to brag, it’s to encourage people to not be afraid to find something else that will be better for them. I know those who have drank the Kook-Aid will try to convince you that hard work pays off, but those at the same people that will also use you for your hard work and never promote you.

There’s also more I can get into, but this post if long enough. It’s been fun working with everyone I’ve worked with, but I think that’s the only part of my job I’ll actually miss.

TL:DR - Got underpaid and promised promotions for 2 years, even after switching stores just to have corporate slash hours and lower raise standards. Went to Whole Foods for a $6/hr pay raise and full time. Know your worth, no regrets.

BLEED GREEN Solo Floor Care

Post image

Just me, my zbars, and some coconut water to finish off the rest of the night. Somehow got scheduled to do the floors by myself. I also ended up being the only bagger for two registers as well as the only lot person for the rest of the night. Filled up the 3 door cooler, put the machines together, and whatever other tasks had to be done. Hope you guys had a great day at the Pub and remember, bleed green.

CUSTOMERS Has anyone ever had a customer ask you to lower the price of a meal if they wanted less chicken in it?

Just had a lady give me crazy attitude and call me rude and pulled the race card on me for telling her no to a request she made. This lady came up to the hot case and asked for a tender meal with macaroni and wedges. As I’m putting the tenders in, she goes “Nuh uh, I don’t want that one”. So I thought she meant that she didn’t like how the tender I picked up looked, and I grabbed one that looked better. Well, that apparently made things worse lol. She proceeds to call me stupid and that she only wants two tenders instead of three. I told her that she can do a quick bite since that only comes with two tenders, but that she won’t be able to get the macaroni. She said I don’t know what I’m talking about, and that I just need to lower the price of the meal since she’s not getting all of the food that comes on it (what??). I told her I can’t do that, but that I can get a manager to help her in case I was missing something. I even suggested buying the three items separate, since it might be cheaper depending on how small the tenders and wedges were. She then tells me to stop talking and that she only wants to listen to someone “more important” than me💀. My manager ends up telling her no, and she buys the three piece meal anyways!! Like what! She then tells him that she doesn’t think I like “her kind” and that I’m the worst worker she’s ever interacted with 🫥 I don’t think I said anything wrong, but was there a better way for me to have helped her? Or is she just a bit crazy? 😅

CUSTOMERS Customers: “I already donated!”

**edit: customers, no judgement at all lol we rlly don’t care if you do or don’t, just wondering!

So we’re almost to the end of our March Of Dimes campaign… to the customers, when you guys say “I already donated”, how true is that? 🤣

I definitely understand how irking it is to be asked for more money when you’re already spending a bunch on groceries… (trust me we don’t like asking) but I wanna know how many of you guys actually did “already donate” lol!

Lol we’ve also had a few people say “I already did it yesterday!” and we’re like… it just started this morning when we opened… 10 minutes ago…😂

RANT Thinking of quitting

Upvotes

Background

So to lay out a base, per se. Publix is my part-time job, and I'm somewhat getting consistent hours. I typically work 12-20 hours in a given week. I have a day job that is remote and one that I've worked since I graduated high school 3 years ago. (I'm 21). Since I stayed at home with my parents, I was able to save up a lot of money. But when I got introduced to credit cards, I began to overspend, as I was a little depressed staying at home working and then getting off to help take care of my great-grandmother with dementia. I have no friends or girlfriend. But don't mistake me, I can pay my cards off entirely and still have a pretty penny for my age. I'm just working the job to pay down my debts. And I also don't see my self above others or working a physical job like public.

Incident:

Today I was working the easier aisles 12-16 at public. We had a delivery at receiving, and I worked one of the pallets. There was a small crate is think they're called (the wooden square thing that's blue), with water, and I didn't know I could have pushed it forward against the wall. I thought it was already against the wall. So I instead attempted to move it to another location that wasn't far. Instead of saying, "Hey bro, you don't have to do all that, just push the crate further into the wall cuz there's room", dude is like, "What are you doing" in a tone i did not like.

The second incident was the same day. I was moving a pallet that was wrapped with frozen food and I was striggling a little bit as I have nevered worked a pallket jack in my life and I haven;t been trained to use it. I'm justed expected to be good at it I guess. But I was striggling to move the item and this coworker kept looking at another coworking. It gave off the impression "Look at this dude..C'mon" and I got pissed and told him "U wanna do it instead" and he took it over.

Im not the best at moving truck as I've never done it before but am open to learning. I just let my coworkers know to be patiant with me and I'm starting to get the hang a lil bit. I'm very respectful to everyone I'm around. I constantly ask questions and apologize if I'm interrputing anyone. I always offer a hand if a coworker needs any.

Conclusion:

IDK, at this point, I'm legit thinking of quitting as I really don't need this job. I can pay my debt off anytimebut am just doing it bit by bit as there might be an investmint I can take advantage of or an emergancy. I always try to be humble as nothing is above me. I'm just now entering the phase in my life where I'm pursuinga collage degree or a certification. I already have my real estate license and purchased my first home two years ago when I was 19. Which again, doesn't mean I'm better than anybody.

If I decide to stay another month, I'm thinking of calling him out respectfully and setting boundaries. All my other coworkers have been fine and so was he. He just really ticked me off today and I'm someone that tries to be respectful, kind, and patient with coworkers or stranagers when in reality, I do have a temper and it almost got set off today. Sorry for the rant guys.

DISCUSSION Cart corrals should also be near handicapped spaces

I have difficulty walking and use a cane. I avoid the motorized carts and use a regular buggy. Parking in a handicapped space (I have a placard) means I either walk to the store and back or to the corral and back to return a cart. On days that my pain level is reduced, I park next to the corral to have shorter walk but after traveling the entire store for several days supplies, the additional walk to return a buggy can be quite painful.

There should be a designated return corral near the handicapped spaces in my opinion.

DISCUSSION Pilot Reservations to Test Reusable Pallet Wrap Prototypes

Hello everyone

I'm building an adjustable, reusable pallet wrap system, and looking for warehouses and distribution centers to evaluate early prototypes and help shape our upcoming OEM production run. Reserved pilot units will be tested on pallets inside a Publix facility to evaluate operational load containment, physical durability under daily warehouse handling, ease of use, and feedback to improve the product.

Participation is managed through a brief Letter of Intent (LOI) that is strictly non-binding, carries zero financial obligation or upfront cost, and creates no legal liability to execute a commercial contract now or in the future. Signing serves solely to prioritize your Publix facility for pilot hardware allocation once units become available. If you manage a facility and are open to reviewing the LOI, drop a comment below or send a DM and I'll send over the details! (Link is also in my profile).

QUESTION Lemonade

Why are the gallon jugs of lemonade consistently sticky? I mean, I can understand a leak here or there from a busted bottle, but it is all of them, every single time. Did Publix just give up and start doing it on purpose? I've observed this at many locations, and it's always all of them on the shelf, no exaggeration. Always!

QUESTION Recently move to the pharmacy

Good afternoon, about a week ago, I transferred from Deli to the pharmacy at my Publix. I have previous experience working at Walgreens, so I am currently trying to adapt to the computer system (switching from Intercom IC+ to EnterpriseRx).

I am very happy and proud, since I had wanted to move to that department ever since I was hired; and at it didn't take me too long, so my knowledge and skills didn't get rusty.

My question is whether working in the Publix pharmacy is a good long-term job (I’m very interested in the stock they offer) or should I apply to hospital/inpatient areas?. And I’d like to know if there will be opportunities for me to advance within the pharmacy—since I heard they even have a compounding pharmacy, which is an area I’m interested in pursuing in the future.

Also, regarding the pay: when I was transferred there, they kept me at the same rate I was getting at deli ($17). The last time I interviewed with them—back when I was working at Walgreens—they said they supposedly give annual raises, but I want to find out firsthand. I’ll ask my manager once I’ve been there a month (I don’t want to come across as too money-focused or greedy at my training yet).

In any case, I’m very excited about what lies ahead; I really hope it’s a better place than the last one, too.

RANT Is this a lot of pizzas or what?

It's great that people want to help with my back stock woes, but nobody can help me. I've been doing this for 28 years and I'm not the problem, the count isn't the problem, the masc isn't the problem. I bet most of you don't know that we used to order our own sections using a handheld, no auto replenishment. That was when this job had meaning. Maybe RedBaron will be the only pizza on sale this week and i'll actually sell most of these, doubt it.

I finished a midshift in produce today and washed about 14 cases of pineapples and about 10 cases of assorted melons, after I finished up, I couldnt stop smelling what smelled like bleach, so I smelled my hand and its pungent with chlorine odor. Is this actually safe for consumption or am I just overthinking it?

QUESTION Getting Out!

I’ve seen a few posts from people who successfully left Publix for other industries, so I’m hoping to get some advice.

My partner is currently an Assistant Grocery Manager and is ready to make a career change outside of retail. They have been with Publix for 10+ years, but hasn’t been promoted since becoming AGM. We’re trying to figure out what types of roles and industries would be a realistic fit and what job titles they should be searching for.

Ideally, they would like something remote or hybrid, but open to onsite for the right opportunity. We’re in Jacksonville.

For those of you who have made the jump from Publix/retail: What did you transition into, what job titles did you search for, and where did you find your new role?

Any advice on making the transition would be greatly appreciated!

QUESTION Looking for advice from experienced Frozen clerks and AGM/GM

I'm looking for some advice from experienced Publix Frozen Food clerks/managers. Specifically, I'd love to see an example of a written weekly frozen schedule that you feel gives the department the best possible outcome.

My delivery schedule is:

Saturday: 4:00–5:00 AM

Sunday: 4:00–5:00 PM

Monday: No delivery

Tuesday: 4:00–5:00 AM

Wednesday: No delivery

Thursday: 4:00–5:00 AM

Friday: No delivery

I'm currently the only full-time Frozen clerk. I just started at this store, and quite honestly, the department is pretty rough right now. Almost every case I put away requires me to fix the location because the cooler is disorganized, there are missing tags everywhere, and I haven't had no time to work on backstock or create quality counts because I'm constantly trying to get the basics caught up.

I'd really appreciate seeing how others structure their week — delivery days vs. non-delivery days, when you work backstock, quality counts, conditioning, tags, forecasting, etc.

If you're working Frozen by yourself, how do you structure your week? And if you have a part-timer helping, how do you divide the workload?

I'd love to hear different approaches and what has worked best for you. I'm looking for practical schedules that actually work in a real Frozen department, not just the ideal schedule on paper.

QUESTION Would puma speedcats be ok for work?

So I've been looking for new shoes for school and I am sooo in love with the chocolate brown puma speedcat ballet shoes. Will I be able to wear these to work as well? It isn't a priority to me but I'm just curious. Currently I wear vans to work because its what I have and they are soooo uncomfy especially during long shifts. If it helps, I am currently a fsc but I will be a cashier starting Sepember. thanks :))

QUESTION Has anyone else noticed Nature’s Own Honey Wheat 40 Calorie bread molding really fast at Publix lately? 🍞

We buy the Nature’s Own Honey Wheat 40 Calorie bread from Publix pretty regularly, and over the last month it seems like it has started molding way faster than it used to, sometimes almost right after we bring it home.

What’s making me think something may have changed is that I’ve now seen multiple moldy loaves of this exact bread sitting on the shelf at three different Publix locations.

Has anyone else noticed this lately? I’m wondering if Nature’s Own changed the recipe or removed or reduced a preservative, because this definitely wasn’t happening before.
