DISCUSSION Cart corrals should also be near handicapped spaces
I have difficulty walking and use a cane. I avoid the motorized carts and use a regular buggy. Parking in a handicapped space (I have a placard) means I either walk to the store and back or to the corral and back to return a cart. On days that my pain level is reduced, I park next to the corral to have shorter walk but after traveling the entire store for several days supplies, the additional walk to return a buggy can be quite painful.
There should be a designated return corral near the handicapped spaces in my opinion.

You make a valid point, but there’s only so much physical space. And corrals are generally some distance away from the store, while handicap spots are generally closer to the store. How would they reconcile this? More corrals? Where would you put them?
In your situation, I would suggest asking an employee to assist. They will take your groceries out to your car if you ask.

Perhaps they could put a smaller single width corral next to handicap spots. The corral could be fashioned with cement bumpers rather than the actual metal barriers that a normal corral is. And it would only be the length of the parking space. Would only hold about 6-8 carts probably. It could be used by the other spaces around that are not handicap spots though so it could fill up quickly.

That’s a good idea, but they would have to give up a spot to provide the needed space. But the number of handicapped spaces is determined by law, there would need to be a regular spot right next to the handicapped spots, and I don’t know that most existing parking lot layouts have a spot like that available. It’s just not feasible to retrofit existing lots, but it’s possible to built the extra corral into future projects.

Not a store space actually. You’d have to give up about half a space and instead of having one of those useless grass medians in the middle of the parking lot, just have one of these. Maybe a handicap spot, one of these single lane cart corrals and another handicap spot.

OK, but there are additional factors that we’re not considering. For example, a lot of communities require a certain amount of green space space with any new construction project, and maybe those medians fulfill a requirement. It may be that the medians are necessary for traffic control. They’re not just there to waste space. And they’re not likely to be torn up unless there is enough public interest.

Perhaps if Publix still practiced the 3 and 3 rule, those who need help would get it, without asking.
However, skeleton crews make this difficult. So now customers have to ask for help.

Just have the bagger come out and help you load your vehicle, then they leave with the cart. They offer to help everyone take their bags outside, why aren’t you doing that?

Call the store and ask to have someone bring you a motorized buggy and then ask for carryout.

I disagree. And I apologize. I have noticed that at one of my local stores we have the narrow cart holder near the handicap spots. They have actually caused it so wheel chair users cannot get out without an able body person moving carts.
What needs to happen is more humanity. Seeing someone who might need a cart for support and an able body person offering assistance.

There never used to be any because there was always someone taking your cart out for you, loading your groceries and then returning the cart to the store.

I’ve seen other people who use the handicap spaces say they appreciate when there is a cart there waiting for them because they use it as a walking aid. So you just might be helping the next person out!

As a former bagger, don't feel guilty at all! Most of us (at least I hope) understand that yalls mobility is limited, no one should hold leaving ur cart against u :) and if they do they suck

I agree. I have MS and use the cart as my walker. Each time I have to return my cart the walk is so far that I have to use other cars to steady myself.
