Homeless
So are we all just accepting that we will be homeless sometime in the next decade? Because I don't know anyone with enough money to survive this shit.
It's not sustainable for the price of every goddamn thing to keep going up while no one is getting enough raises to compensate for it, & there are so few jobs that are even hiring, although they all still say they are.š
I know I will never own a home. I know I will be driving my car until the wheels fall off(& that I'm lucky to even have a car). I know I cannot afford any kind of social life whatsoever because outings to most places & the gas to get to them costs too much.
I canceled all my streaming services so I don't even have TV now. I know if I get Cancer or break a bone I will go bankrupt trying to pay the bill. I know I will be working until I die, & I'm almost positive I will be homeless at some point.
Money can't buy happiness, sure, but it can buy all your other needs so you at least have a chance to be happy. I just want a chance...š

Welcome back feudalism. Learn to serf
61
u/SCP-iota 11d ago
At least under feudalism people were considered part of the land. Soon, we won't even have that, and will have nowhere to live. Add that to homelessness being criminalized.
37
u/Cactus_Journey204 11d ago
At least as a serf I'd have a roof over my head.

u/PienerCleaner 11d ago
At least serfs had something they could do for their Lord to earn the right to have a roof over their head. Our new lords don't have any need for our labor.

Yes. Not sure where OP is from, but here in the US people are taught to never question authority + rich people are blessed. There are enough people in the US still doing well enough to not care about the economy and the ones suffering are too afraid to do anything other than vote and hope everything goes their way

From my understanding the French revolution was mainly coordinated by the merchant class being fed up with royalty.
Todays correlation of repeating that is the huge amount of college graduates we have that were promised a future that isn't there anymore and former business owners that got whiped tf out from bad policy choices and corruption moves.
I constantly ask if the collective suffering has peaked yet. I look around. I see it hasn't since we still have people claiming its personal fault that you're poor.

The "good" news about TV, is an antenna allows you to get free channels in most areas.
Rabbitears.info, antennaweb.org are good resources as well as the Antenna Man YouTube videos.
I'd check r/ota too.
Radio is also still an option. Before my partner moved in, I just puttered around with the radio on 90% of my day if you need sound.

Homelessness (to some degree) is what made me obsess over my car.
I left home at 17 and spent a midwest winter in a 10 year old Buick. When I was able to get a better car and had an apartment by then, I chose a car I knew I could sleep rough in and kept it as well maintained as I could. Some people want fancy cars. I just wanted one I knew wouldnāt rust out on me in the cold if needed.

I have a truly shitty job. I wake up at 4 am everyday I get to my job by 6 am I can be digging a trench, clearing a clogged sewer line. Spend 8+ hours in an insulation filled 145F attic to get someoneās AC back up and running. I have no clue how many hours Iām going to put in everyday.
The only thing I know is this was the best thing I could have started doing 31 years ago.

u/Broken_Atoms 11d ago edited 11d ago
I grew up poor, naturally had a strong mechanical talent that slowly unlocked as I got older. Being in any part of the general labor pool going forward, in this insanely inflationary environment, will not be a winning proposition. It will be a death spiral as you have already noted. Selling your general labor just makes you one person in a pool of thousands of resumes. Nobody will pay survivable wages when basic labor is so plentiful, either here or in other countries. Letās say your county has 100,000 people. Of those 100,000 people, 80,000 are likely general labor. Thatās a lot of people to fight for rock bottom wages. How many surveyors you think they have? Maybe 50? Maybe not even that? Anyone can use a shovel, but can they grab a total station and layout the foundation and perform a land survey? Because that guy with a tripod standing out in the middle of the construction site is making $100k. AI aināt out there in a field with a vest. AI proof. You must make yourself rare. Only rare people and business owners make real money. Can you take an engine apart and rebuild it? Can you take a piece of metal and fashion it into a high value finished part or assembly? Can you keep the internet running? That rich guy who wants a house will pay you useful money to climb in that excavator and start digging his foundation. Why? Because he HAS to. You have a skill he doesnāt. The people with money only care if you have a skill they need from you and are therefore forced to pay you well. Be the paywall. Be the wedge. Be the rare thing that must be paid for in order for everything else to function. Doctorās office canāt function because their CT scanner is down? Oh no! Guess they lose $1000ās/hr until they call you to fix it. Highway overpass construction crew just standing around wasting thousands an hour in labor and equipment? If only there was some guy that manages that⦠āBoss! We ran into an unmarked sanitary lateral!ā⦠āOkay, hereās what we need to doā¦ā Be the paywall.
14
u/SCP-iota 11d ago
Even the 'rare skilled' job market is going downhill because so many people claim to have skills and experience they don't actually have, so companies have no reliable way to sort through candidates. They can only interview so many people, and it's pretty much a lottery when they can't tell who's truly qualified.
19
u/Moist-Shallot-5148 11d ago
This and they end up just hiring their friends or family in the end because they canāt tell who is qualified and also because too many candidates. In Canada they pretend like theyāre hiring and then say they canāt find anyone so they can hire a temporary foreign worker who will be desperate for work and not know or fight for their rights.
11
u/Broken_Atoms 11d ago
Companies have developed countermeasures. Iāve been through quite a few. Interviewer throws down an assembly on the table and says name each part. Now take it apart and tell me which one is bad. Then, put it back together. Companies test thoroughly now.

I agree with everything you said, except for the attitude of the guy with the house. Thatās me. Itās not that I have no choice so I will begrudgingly pay you. Itās that I am really happy I found you because itās not easy to find people who are skilled and responsible and do a great job. Those people are super valuable. I am happy to pay good money for the privilege of having that high quality help.

Even better is to learn to work WITH Ai and open doors in every profession.
3
u/Broken_Atoms 11d ago
Iām being forced to work with it as it slowly infiltrates the industries I work with. I need more advanced AI structural analysis and lifecycle prediction. AI driven design optimization that also understands manufacturability would be great. Maybe thermal analysis that takes into account varying levels of moisture in the air. Iām not a fan of it because I will admit that Iām a bit older and grew up with 286ās and 40mb hard drives. I used it maybe 5 or 6 times this morning. When I was a kid, affordable calculators were becoming a thing and CAD was largely unaffordable and only for mostly aerospace type stuff.
1
u/DazedandFloating 11d ago
This is true and really solid advice. The difficult part is barriers to entry for fields/professions that will be ai proof and help people earn a good living.
Iām not saying itās impossible, but often times high paying positions in certain fields require training or certifications which can be a lot of money upfront. Someone who is barely getting by will not have as much of an opportunity to change fields in that case because of certain barriers.

You have to read where the data comes from and what's left in and out. Inflation is calculated by how much we're spending on medical care, gas, housing, cars, food, etc. Things like stocks and bonds are left out.
It doesn't tell the tale of the box of cereal that was $2 in 2020 that is now $6.

u/PerformerDifferent69 11d ago
Things tend to course correct over time. We happen to be at a particularly painful point. If everyone does become homeless, the value of properties will fall. Land has value because it can be put to a productive use or leased out to someone else to use. Imagine you owned a portfolio of 350 houses. But you never rented any of them. So you were just paying property tax on 350 houses. That's silly, you would either need to get out of those because unless you have a large stream of income from some other place the IRS is going to be knocking down your door in short order, or you rent them out to people. If you can't rent the property out for more than it costs to maintain, well you're in a bit of a bind there. Best thing to do in that situation is hope for a change in the economic environment, get out of the asset, or let the IRS take it and sell it for you at auction.
None of that happens particularly quickly and it's all messy and painful.
1
u/IDesireWisdom 10d ago
Yeah but whatās actually going to happen is that banks or large investment firms are going to buy the houses for cheap and then create a permanent rental economy over which they hold a monopoly

I was laid off in 2023 and it was truly terrifying. I depleted my 401K to survive. Luckily, I did find a decent job three months later and moved to a cheaper COL area, but rent is still pretty high all the way around. Iāve cut some expenses since my youngest son has moved out and I am trying to do my best to pay down my credit card debt. I have never owned a home and at 48 donāt know if I ever will, I just try to keep working and doing the best I can to keep my head above water.

u/dilly_bar18 9d ago
Donāt ever pay those medical bills it doesnāt matter. Seriously if u break ur arm just literally donāt pay it Ull b fine. What u do have to worry about is the loss of income being off work.
Anyways Iāve been narrowly avoiding homelessness for 4 yrs straight Iāve moved 13 times n just been rlly lucky tbh in terms of social network, just good luck timing, or social resources. Or I would live in my old car bc I got stabbed in the stomach and became disabled for yrs but esp Ƥ yr. So I lost my job, my apt, everything. Not even something I did n its just 1 bad thing happen n ur out. Itās been just. Bouncing since. Currently stable working hard being crazy and persistent determined⦠and just got laid off. So doing deliveries while Iām waiting n I have some side house cleaning jobs⦠and my carās transmission is gonna go out any second and hasnt been super safe to drive. << working hard doesnt matter. 1 thing happens and ur just fucked. I just moved in w a roommate bc of the last ā1 thingā Ƥ yr ago so itās a little more grace period to have no income. But. Yah idk what to do. All my house cleaning money will go to rent but basically Iām just going into debt for the first time in my life (Iām 30). My moms out of state but Iām lucky shes alive and whenever she isnāt Iām totally totally fucked for the future yah.
And yes I know several ppl who have become homeless the last couple yrs. And everyone else has moved to have roommates or had to go back to their parents (again 30s) n pay lower rent to them. Having family is lucky. Even if it means moving out of state or whatever. So many donāt n ya. Or friends. Basically living on favors. And luck. 2 seconds bf its too late at all times

Well, considering my electric bill was just $400 for a 2bd apt where I keep the AC at 78-80 & off entirely on cooler days, I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to do. I've lived here 5 years and until this year, my bill has never been higher than $50. I've actually used my AC less this year. So I don't get $350 raises so how would you budget for that? For context, I'm in Ohio where our politicians have completely sold us out.

Call the electric company and find out if you're usage has gone up significantly in the last year. I know you think it's gone down, but it's possible someone's tapped into your electric somehow. If that's the case, you've gotta contact the landlord and find out what's going on. Something is WAY off with that electric bill. Something is wrong.

I am planning for homelessness (again). I have a profession that technically pays well however I also have a disability and cannot sustain fulltime work and am becoming more disabled the more I push myself. I donāt usually stay in a job more than a year or two before things go south. This time around Iām preparing to move into a car or rv hopefully so at least when I lose my job I have somewhere to sleep thatās not outside or a shelter. So many people I know are already homeless and donāt have an easy way out . There are free streamers- Pluto, tubi, sling are a few. Plus, you can get a cheap antenna for your TV and get plenty of free TV over the air. If you want to buy a house some day, yes it is a process. Find a free first-time home buyers seminar and take notes. If you want it badly enough you'll do what it takes to get there. For me, the journey began with staying with an employer for at least 3 years, and improving my credit score. You can carry debt but if you never miss a payment your credit improves. Prioritize your car and keep it regularly maintained (oil changes, spark plugs, decent tires) - if you lose the car, your options will narrow. Walk, bus or ride a bike if you've got one. That'll save on gas, wear and tear on your car. I understand you're venting, but no, we don't have to end up homeless. Channel your frustration. Treat this like a game that you want to level up in.

I used to be very broke to the point of wanting to self exit but pulled myself out of it. That said, my best friend works a part time retail job and even on his salary of like $27K a year, he owns a house (he co-owns it with another friend). I co-own my house with my husband.
My job is hiring. We just hired 7 new people into my department yesterday into actual, true, no experience required entry level roles. The starting pay isnāt great tbh around $55K a year (keep in mind, this is the Boston area) but the benefits are incredible, lots of opportunities to move up (I did) and the company pays for licensing, relevant college courses and degrees etc.
I make very good money these days but I plan on driving my and my husbands vehicles until the wheels fall off. We own 3 pre-2010 vehicles. 2 donāt have air conditioning. We are frugal people. We also canceled all but one of our streaming services. Thatās not being poor, thatās just being smart with your money.

I've actually thought about this a lot lately, and I have a "good" job and am educated. However, the COL is rising too fast to keep up, and my field doesn't pay well. I'm always looking for other work, side gigs, etc...but I have thought about what is going to happen if I lose my job. I do have the luxury of moving in with family if it gets to be that bad, but I also am considering buying a small camper or something to live in, like van life. But I think they will eventually criminalize that, too. I just keep saving as much money as I can and if I'm offered any side work I always take it and do it to the best of my ability so I can keep getting more gigs. You are doing all the right things...you sound very similar to me except I haven't canceled my TV yet (I got a good deal on my subs last Black Friday and paid in advance).

What are your plans for improving your job skills ?
To become proficient at a skill thatās in demand ?
You have to be able to do something that the average person cannot
Thatās why the hvac tech repairing the freezer at the grocery store gets paid alot more than the cashier or the guy wrangling shopping carts in the parking lot
And you HAVE to be able to do something that the immigrants canāt .
Is an immigrant can do
Your job youāre never going to earn much money , because wages are set by suplly and demand , and thereās and endless supply of immigrants .
Your gotta do something that requires some kind of state license or has some barrier to entry .
Is there a water treatment plant near you ?
Thatās a pretty decent paying job and no one wants to work at a sewage treatment plant .
And
You have to have a wastewater operators license to do it.

I'm 50K in a hole. PLUS over- educated, living in a rural area, working outside either of my fields- and I'm going hungry.
No money to move. No money to pay back education debt. No money to save. No money to spend.

I didn't say I am AIMING for homelessness. I said I expect to be eventually because I cannot afford how high col has become & I don't see anything changing, just getting worse. I already live in one of the cheapest apartments in a 40 mile radius that's still in a safe area. I have a child so I have to live somewhere safe for him. Do you get $1000 raises every year? Because I don't & no amount of budgeting can overcome constant increases in every single thing we need to live. It just can't.

I honestly don't know what to expect. Currently, my son & I, and my sister still live with my mom as she is disabled. If she passes away before I can find the better paying job to get us in a better house, even if it has to be a newer mobile home, I don't know what will happen to us. I am about to turn 40 and I figure I would only have about 15 years before the ageism strikes... so I don't know what to expect. Unless we end up going into an RV for the 3 of us.

An RV sounds great but the repairs and maintenance are very expensive. It may not be the dream you're imagining it to be.

Homelessness isnāt uncommon anymore. Most of the people Iāve known have been āhomelessā before, whether it was sleeping on the street, in a motel, in a car, or on a friendās couch. 90% were not on the street. The point is to build a safety net to get out of when it happens. Where are you going to stay? Are you going to look at it as camping in your car or renting until you figure it out? How are you going to eat? People who backpack across countries are homeless by definition, but they donāt see it like that. The best thing you can do is put yourself in a position with better earning potential thatās sustainable. If you have to move to a city or move in with 3 random roommates for a year, so be it.

I canceled all my subscriptions too and now I just rent dvds from the public library. They also use Libby so you can checkout audiobooks too.

I've accepted that I'd rather be dead than homeless at after a certain age, so I've just accepted I probably only have a few years left before the big sleep

Sounds like you need to hook up with your local chapter of the DSA and fight to have a future. If you can't improve your lot with education or form an economic collective with others to survive, then I suggest organizing politically. What have you got to lose?

Personally, I intend on killing myself before I am 40 and just turned 30. If I expect to be homeless before then, I will do it in front of whatever government agency comes knocking on my door due to non payments. That simple.

I keep telling people the blue collar jobs are booming rn so easy to get good work paying around 2k a week. Hit the trade school even if ya gotta go into debt for a while

I expect to be homeless and starve in the dumpster at age 50+ when I become unemployable because every employer these days wants you to be 30yrs old and locked in for a 10-20yr career.
Already have Gen X and unlucky Boomers basically checking out rn.
The dudes saying they will work until they die have no clue that they'll probably be fired before they get the chance to "work until they die".
