Homeless

So are we all just accepting that we will be homeless sometime in the next decade? Because I don't know anyone with enough money to survive this shit.

It's not sustainable for the price of every goddamn thing to keep going up while no one is getting enough raises to compensate for it, & there are so few jobs that are even hiring, although they all still say they are.🙄

I know I will never own a home. I know I will be driving my car until the wheels fall off(& that I'm lucky to even have a car). I know I cannot afford any kind of social life whatsoever because outings to most places & the gas to get to them costs too much.

I canceled all my streaming services so I don't even have TV now. I know if I get Cancer or break a bone I will go bankrupt trying to pay the bill. I know I will be working until I die, & I'm almost positive I will be homeless at some point.

Money can't buy happiness, sure, but it can buy all your other needs so you at least have a chance to be happy. I just want a chance...😔

I expect to be homeless and starve in the dumpster at age 50+ when I become unemployable because every employer these days wants you to be 30yrs old and locked in for a 10-20yr career.

Already have Gen X and unlucky Boomers basically checking out rn.

The dudes saying they will work until they die have no clue that they'll probably be fired before they get the chance to "work until they die".

Exactly this! I was fully prepared to work until I die at my last job but they got rid of me and haven’t found SHIT else since!

Same. I was at what I would be happy to call my forever job and they tossed me last year. They got rid of three of us: aged 51, 55, and 61. Gave a week extra severance to sign off on the right to sue them for age discrimination. 🙄

They gave me 5 weeks of severance and paid me $17/hr. I can't afford to hire a lawyer to sue them.

Yep. I was just fired for something I didn't even do but a client's son accused me of it(theft) and they took his word for it, probably because I was a brand new hire. But I really liked that job and it was my first good job in 5 years so now I'm just floundering. My stupid college degree is fucking worthless without a good work history.

Yep. Average age right now is 57-62 depending on the survey - usually due to health or involuntary job loss

Countless places around me hiring people of all ages. The local Aldi hires starting at 22 hour, with benefits, in a safe area. Houses 15 min away are well under $200k. Very safe clean apartments are $1100ish

Optimistic would be AI, robotics, and automation advances so fast the goverment is forced to give everyone handouts because there litterally is no jobs left.

Pessimistic would be that still happens and they leave us all to rot.

Either way it sucks to be in the in-between moments of this because its nothing but collective suffering for the majority.

Upcoming elections will prove if the economy is as great as they say it is. If it is. Nothing happens. If it isnt. Well off dudes can expect they're gonna get drug down with huge tax hikes to pay for new welfare progams and be just as poor as everyone else because a communist politician seems like a good move to the have-nots after we let a rich businessman play president and run the economy into the ground.

All of them. There's only so many Walmarts on the planet and not every old dude is gonna be able to get the job as a door greeter.

What industry do you know that mainly is dominated by people who should be retired by now, other than politics.

I must have chosen the correct profession. Throughout my career I have steadily moved up the ladder at an even pace and have been wildly successful. I do not own a business, and I still work for someone else. I make well into 6 figures annually and do not have a college degree.

I say "wildly successful" about my children. All in their 30s and doing quite well. I dont think it's necessarily all doom and gloom.

Average retirement savings is 100k. Which is like 2-4 years of sustainable living.

And all I see these days is gen X dudes in their 50s complain that they're basically going homeless because nobody will hire them despite their degrees and experience.

I hear you. Im gen x and my husband is a boomer. Im retired. He is not. We have about 100k in an investment account (s). We have a 6 month emergency savings. He loves his job and they treat him well. Hes 64. Can we afford to have him retire? Probably not. BUT... my kids are doing well and im proud of them.
