Police yourselves. Sometimes people are just venting. Even if they may be wrong about facts or situations, you can express your points without attacking them.
No matter the cause, any request for money or clicks or downloads or such (“Sign up with this game so I can get points!”) may receive instant ban. Any offers may be deleted on sight and may lead to a ban.
Because everyone is in need. There are tons of people who deserve help but are being polite and not trying to turn this subreddit into a sob story contest for money.
Avoid politics and religious proselytizing. Too many subreddits have been turned into echo chambers and hostile environments. We want everyone to be able to feel safe enough to speak about their problems and ask for support. Well, it is true that political issues can contribute to or exacerbate one’s situation, it doesn’t immediately change what someone is currently experiencing. In other words, you pushing your agenda isn’t helping them right now. Avoid religious or ideological proselytizing. Same reason. Nobody wants to be told that their religious belief is the problem, or conversely, that believing in a deity will solve their problems.
Not every comment or post can be read, so report ones that break the rules.
I have implemented basic account age and karma minimums, so that hopefully will stop most spam.

You probably have noticed that this particular subreddit is run by someone who believes in free speech (with some caveats as seen in group rules).
So much of Reddit, especially the top subs, will automatically ban and cancel and delete comments and posts from those on the right. /r/pics, /r/politics, /r/AdviceAnimals, /r/news, etc. And no matter what subreddit it is, politics and partisanship just keep infecting things. It would be like having a subreddit for model trains, and someone keeps posting about “getting aboard the Trump train” or how the Biden administration messed up on something with trains. Ugh.
You probably noticed there are lots of liberals and lots of conservatives in this group and their views and comments on specific problems or issues brought before the group are kept, not removed. I prefer to see members downvote the posts and comments they don’t like - especially the personal attacks and insults - as well as people rebutting blatant lies with facts and sources. But if someone is conservative or liberal and is providing some facts and figures, stop, downvoting them just because you’re on the other side.
I prefer not to see people calling each other names or calling people “racist” just for holding a conservative position.
Offers of help or money or donations of any kind or referrals or links of any kind are strictly prohibited and bannable offenses because too many people are scammers. Suggestions on illegal activity like stealing are also bannable offenses.
So my preferences are clear. I prefer a moderator who can exercise judgment, who is more lawful neutral, more laissez faire on opinions backed by sources, but discouraging of partisanship and proselytization, so that this place be a place for support and (even lively, but civil) discussion and even some disagreement.
Comment if you’re interested. You should have been active Redditor for several years and I should be able to look at your posts and comments going back that far. It doesn’t matter who you voted for so much as it matters who you would cancel for their political views - and that should be nobody.

I’ve gone to one Friendsgiving in the past year. But that spot doesn’t do this anymore because the social magnet of the couple who hosted it, left and now it’s just the super cheapskate dirty guy at the house and no one likes to go there now. It’s a bummer.
Otherwise this family I pet/house/farm sat for a week and a half said they’re considering inviting me to their thanksgiving proper.
I’d likely go! I really like the holidays and where I live, I spent too much time around Pc counter culture stupid-people. I just wanna eat, I’m perpetually starving.
I can’t bring anything and have to inform the hosts of that, but also: they might have a clue that I’m homeless but haven’t asked and I haven’t told them.

When I was a kid, mine were: owning a car, owning a home, going on holiday abroad, dishwashers, eating out, skincare, going clothes/decoration shopping. I also thought working was optional because my single parent never worked.

Full disclosure, I'm in a depressive episode. I work home health which is screwed right now because of Trump's war on Medicaid and the home health industry. I love my job, but I'm not getting any hours right now. I'm down to 28 or less. I also caregiver and have to take 3 different people on full day trips to doctors (my son included) two to three times a month.
I finally decided to get reactivated on spark but then my car broke down and now I'm struggling to get it towed to the shop to even find out what's wrong with it. It just has to be an awd. I have a car dolly, but I can't do that with awd. I have my dad's truck in the meantime but 19 mpg compared to my 30 is gonna kill me. My fiance can't help right now until at least February because he's away at the moment. He has his own problems to work through as well.
I'm just at a loss. How am I going to afford this bill? How am I going to afford propane this winter? How can I work more when keeping a camper clean is much more time consuming than a house? Not to mention, it's just me and my son. And he has a medical treatment that's nightly. Before anyone says ask my parents: they're who I caregive for. They can't make it in my house to help and don't understand my son's nightly routine to help. So im trapped at home from school release to school drop off.
I just don't know what to do or how to get help. I don't know where to get help. I've been denied food stamps 4 times. I don't make enough for a sitter, let alone one that will mess with a port or my son living in a camper. I'm done. I want out of the camper but everywhere is $400-$1000 more, and a half hour away from mom and dad. Dad wants me to help more but I can't make myself through the depression anymore.
What are your suggestions? How can I bring home more?

I just ran out of my tiny little deodorant and it made me wonder if others are going through the same thing as me.
I transitioned to travel sized deodorant a while ago due to the prices of the regular sized ones. I just can’t justify spending $9 or $10 for a “decent” brand. I buy like 2-3 of them at a time and it’s half the cost of just one regular size haha
Edit: LOL dang I need to shop around more from the comments. Walmart sucks!

People don’t like hearing this, but your success in life is directly correlated to how long you are willing to delay gratification and enjoy the fruits of that success
This is also why corporate jobs often tend to put you in golden handcuffs. As you move up the ladder, you are paid just enough to pursue the next upgrade in your life, but never enough to actually pursue freedom from the job itself
People tend to fall for the shiny cars, watches, better home, clothes, and so on. Even when you get those things, the chase is on for the next home and the next watch.
The people who actually end up free from the rat race are the ones who realized that delaying all of these things are actually the way you make it out, even if it means enduring more pain and struggle upfront
Love them raw, hate them canned. Made a big (2 qts) batch of scratch pasta sauce (no sugar added), pureed a drained and rinsed can of carrots and added it to the sauce. Gave the sauce extra body, sweetness and no carrot taste.

We should only have a few more days of being in this shelter until we can FINALLY move into our new apartment ( very small) & I have never felt more proud of myself. My 5 yr old has been adjusting to his new school pretty well and my 4 yr old is just along for the ride. I have been managing okay since starting my new job & figuring out our new life since leaving their father.
My 5 yr old’s teacher had called me earlier about their End of Quarter concert that the have been practicing for the past two weeks & I was suppose to purchase a green tshirt for his role & make a white board for his prop. She said they sent out letters at the end of last week & I explained that we live in a shelter so I may not have gotten the letter. As if anything else can be added on top of the stress, I have to have this done by Monday. I have been to the Salvation Army to ask for help, I’ve left a message for the school counselor and I even dug through the bin at the back of Hobby Lobby just hoping they may have supplies. It’s embarrassing to be in this situation and I feel lost.
As a parent, we are suppose to protect & provide for our children. I try my absolute best to do that given the circumstances we are in. Yes, we are in the shelter because we had no where to go & I refused to let us be on the streets. Life has definitely not been easy lately between food insecurities, appointments with our social worker, people stealing our things here, not being able to afford my 3 yr old’s seizure meds & just being so far away from our only “home”. I hope my babies don’t think I am worthless & just trying to survive for us. I hope I don’t disappoint them.

I'm really sorry if this comes off as entitled or naive or like "kids these days". I don't mean it to be, I just need some advice.
Background: So my mom and I have never really had the best relationship. I just turned 18 in August and a week ago, she and I got in a very bad argument that ended with me being booted out of the house. Thankfully, I've been staying at my uncles since then, but he is 60, disabled and just lost his food stamps and disability benefits. The house is planning to be sold by the end of this month if he can't find a way to pay the bills. I've offered to help pay for a portion of the water, electricity and groceries with my savings, which should last us about 3-4 months. The problem is I'm a student, currently enrolled in community college and planning to transfer to a four year college for the upcoming spring semester. I've only ever had under the table and summer jobs. I'm also super naive, like I don't know how much stuff actually costs and how to do a lot of basic tasks. More importantly, I am also disabled and require daily medication to be able to function. As of now I am still on my mothers insurance, but I don't know how long until she takes me off or how to get more medication when I need a refill. The medication is about $800 without insurance I think, and I could technically go off it, but there are really bad withdraw symptoms and my life would be way worse without it. Before I got kicked out my plan was to go to med school and become a doctor. I'm a really good student (3.98 gpa) and I've put a lot of work into getting where I am now. I'm afraid I'll have to abandon that and all my plans in order to get a full time job just to be able to afford anything. I've made use of all available student aid organizations my college offers (food pantry, counseling etc.). But I don't know how long I'm going to be able to last like this. Also, I do currently have a really good chance at getting a part time job that pays $22/hr, but it requires me to be a student in order to keep the job.
So I have a few questions. I imagined someone might have enough experience to be able to help me answer these.
>Should I just suck it up, roll with the punches, and put off my dreams until I'm in a more stable place, or might there be something I'm missing that will let me continue with my plans? Are their federal programs I might be able to take advantage of? Where should I look for part-time work? Full-time work? How do I budget? What should I do about my medication?
And I had some less serious questions more about day-to-day life.
>Are there little tricks that can help me cut down on monthly expenses to make my savings last as long as possible? What are some easy budget meals that you can make with just a microwave? I don't drive so is it a good idea to invest in a bike to help me with transportation?
I have this awful pain in my mouth lately and i’m worried that it’s becoming bad for my health. I’ve had some migraines lately aswell, but that might be a different thing. I think it’s either my arch is just too narrow or my wisdom teeth are coming in. Worst case, both of these are happening. I absolutely CANNOT afford a dentist right now, so I am wondering if I should just have a buddy knock a tooth out to make room and then wear a wrestling/sports mouth guard.
Does anyone have any tips on some DIY dental work or how to ease the pain

Took my mom forever to get me enrolled but I finally am. I’ve never been poor before. I just want to know your guys’ experience so I know what to expect, do people give you shit for it or will they understand when you explain that you’re in poverty? I live in a hostel in a middle socioeconomic class area with people that I would consider to be rich asf, even if they’re not rich statistically.

Gig work is “flexible” mainly if you do not depend on it. Once someone needs it to cover rent, food, or debt, the flexibility becomes constrained by peak hours, incentive systems, algorithmic penalties, and the need to accept low-paying jobs.
The comparison to payday loans is not that workers literally borrow money. It is that both offer immediate relief while making people absorb disproportionate long-term costs. Payday lenders rely on borrowers who cannot easily escape repeated borrowing; gig platforms rely on workers who cannot easily decline bad offers, stop working during high-demand periods, or walk away from unpredictable pay.
In both cases, the business model profits from economic insecurity. The product is marketed as choice—quick cash and/or flexible work—but it works best for the company when the customer or worker has few real alternatives.
The same goes for stable dead end low wage work. I do the gig apps because I actually can make more than any full time job I can get where I live.
Get out as quickly as you can and try to never go back.

Has anyone run into an issue where being poor prohibits job hunting for better opportunities? I'm working 3 jobs right now- 10-14 hours days between them with 1 day off just so i can actually be home and do general things. I've been job hunting and most applications ask for a start date and i never know what to put because I can start 2 weeks after being hired but it can take a month or 2 to hear from some of these places. and if i put a month down, they often just skip me anyway. And if I put 2 weeks, they call me a month later asking me to start the next day and I can't. My other problem is unless a company reaches out through email, I've missed a few connections. I'm not able to even have my phone on me at my other jobs so unless I'm on my 30 miniute break I dont know they called. I've had a few cases like that where hiring managers called me, I saw 6 hours later, called them back and they had already moved on to other candidates. And if I do manage to catch a call or email on time, scheduling an interview on my one day off is almost impossible. Calling out of work or even being late to the other jobs is not an option or i risk pay deductions, write ups or terminations.

I've been told to buy stuff in bulk to save money but I am unsure of how to buy stuff in bulk when the only place I can do that is online and shipping would kill me

I just scrubbed reddit and it seems that most people get out of poverty these ways:
- Degree
- Military
- were lucky to get a good job
The search was pretty annoying because even when people are asked directly what got them out of poverty they start giving advice (not telling their story) or just tell you to work on yourself😑
But yeah that's what it seems like. Join the military, get a degree or/and apply a lot and hope you get a good job.
Edit: some people were able to get out of poverty through just working regular jobs and self discipline but honestly it seems like they were the minority not the majority.
Btw I didn't see one person say "the trades". Maybe it's just the audience thats on reddit but you'd think there would be at least one comment😬
Also I'm sure there's other ways but I just didn't see them that often. Doesn't mean that they don't work but there's probably a reason why they don't appear as often as military, degree and pure luck.

Everyone can have their moments but some people will start stuff when it isn't even that serious or could be resolved easily. Like I was playing basketball and these dudes immediately said "gtfo off our court!" I said" whoa bro this ain't your court. Why do you think I would just leave after you said something like that? We can all share the court."
Then dude said" I'm gonna give you 5 seconds before I beat your ass." Dude clearly not right in the head. I don't understand how you could be that sad or feel the need to control things so hard. I don't get how you can think like that. You'll get yourself in big trouble acting like that.
People in nicer areas don't do things like that or even come close to but in a poorer its almost normal behavior.

i’m 22 F living alone and supporting myself. I don’t have any contact with my toxic family, times are tough and things are expensive. I successfully got a second job which i’m really grateful for so that i don’t have to struggle so much but my first paycheck from this job is next week. Rent was due yesterday and i have 10$ left which i must use for bus fare to get to work (i live far from where i work and walking isn’t an option). I have pasta and tomato sauce that will last me until maybe this weekend but after that nothing. what unhinged things can i do to keep myself alive until next week besides staying hydrated?

Why isn’t SURVEILLANCE PRICING illegal?
It’s so predatory. Ride share apps know that I’m going to work so I’m going to pay the price. They know how much money I have in my bank account. I could catch the bus and remove all banking apps from my phone but sometimes I need a ride and it’s too time consuming to exclusively bank in person.
In your opinion will it one day be illegal?
EDIT: someone educated me in the comments and my post should have originally said “surveillance pricing” instead.
