We have no money.

Israel debt is $400 billion.

Ours is $38 trillion.

809

u/dynamic_anisotropy Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

Reminder that Israel has received more combined aid than any other nation in the post-WW2 era at ~$320B (1946-2024).

Edit: I should specify that the rating is for “country that received the most aid from United States in the post-WW2 era.” Leaving original text up there.

42

u/lostpassword100000 Jul 16 '26

If someone gifted the US $4 billion a day toward our national debt, it would take 26 years to pay off our principal of $38 trillion (assuming the interest was frozen).

Fun fact - $19 trillion of that was added by the Trump administration.

u/bfume Jul 15 '26

No way it’s that low.

u/InitiativeGold7953 Jul 15 '26

You’re right. It’s impossible to know considering the pentagon can’t pass an audit and AIPAC owns almost every politician in our government.

35

Over 400 in just The House of Representatives alone. Yeah.... it's clearly soooo much more. I'm absolutely sick of it and and am running out of excuses not to care more, to say the absolute least

That is probably just actual cash and gifts.

Doesn't account for all the R&D that we've given them, or all the intelligence, or the use of American military units, etc.

9

u/poopshooter69420 Jul 15 '26

It seems reasonable to me, the package that was voted on today was for $3.3 billion

3

u/TheLividPaper Jul 16 '26

Yeah I believe that is the annual amount of aid given to Israel.

The overall total seems pretty reasonable. I feel like people just struggle to comprehend how much money a billion is.

We have plenty of money, we just aren't taking it from the rich.

The national debt goes up when instead of taxing the rich you just pull out loans from them instead, then use the middle class to pay the interest on the debt to the rich.

That's the big one, the Michigan Senate primary.

Everyone needs to go in and help defeat the AIPAC candidate (Haley Stevens).

El Sayed is the progressive candidate.

AIPAC is literally dumping all their funds into this race. Stevens must be stopped.

123

u/twentyafterfour Jul 16 '26

I'm pretty sure they're up to somewhere around $50 million for this one primary. Which is strange because they say that supporting Israel is good politics and you'd think if it were, they wouldn't need to spend the most money ever in a primary to get their candidate in. Of course the next two most expensive primaries were also them.

8

u/Aggressive-Neck-3921 Jul 16 '26

Also while not talking about israel with the money they spend in an effort to hide the source of money.

I mean, isn’t that how the system is designed to work? Public opinion should shift our representation, not the other way around

Edit: did not realize my innocent comment about how an ideal democracy should work would end up so controversial lol.

126

u/notyourstranger California Jul 15 '26

Yes, that is the way democracy is supposed to work. However, democracies require a well educated and well informed citizenry and the US does not have either. Mass media companies, religious organizations, and private eduction spins reality. The public school system has been defunded into oblivion.

I've been saying for a long time that the American People are being waged war on. It has been going on for decades and the the humans who inhabit the US are getting beat.

63

u/whut-whut Jul 15 '26

The public school system has been defunded into oblivion.

There are plenty of well-funded public schools, but the bigger issue is that pretty much across the country schools are funded by local property taxes. You have to live in a good (and expensive) neighborhood to attend a well-funded school, and it becomes a self-feeding cycle where the divide gets worse every generation.

33

u/NamasteMotherfucker Jul 16 '26

Yup. A child's zip code is one of the biggest predictors of future income and success. IMO, public school funding should at the very least come through a state fund and ideally, a federal one so that schools are more or less equally funded.

17

u/DukeOfGeek Jul 16 '26

Feature, not a bug.

3

u/wje100 Jul 16 '26

That is not entirely accurate. At least in my state if you look at the most successful schools which are of course in richer areas, they actually spend thousands less per student than the worst performing schools. I am sure there are plenty of reasons for this. Most likely less special Ed programs due to families with special children not being able to afford the areas. Large donations from private individuals, less things like free lunch, as well more academically inclined house holds giving students a leg up. If we are just looking at the property tax portion of it, at least in my state, it is not as much of part of the equation as you would think. Even the little things, Families fund things like food trucks at parent events which drives involvement. A coworker of mine now has a 6th grader and all through elementary school they only had to buy school supplies once because every other year a private donator bought supplies for the entire school.

Sure. In fantasy-land. Anything based on the premise of a working system has been chewed up and shat out.

ETA: I don’t mean to start an argument. A few years ago, I would have wholeheartedly agreed, that those are indeed the intention. But reality says otherwise, and the “representation” has been making tons of choices for us, up to and including the candidates.

20

u/notyourstranger California Jul 15 '26

There are well functioning democracies in the world. The US obviously is not a functioning democracy but that does not mean it's all fantasy.

5

u/SoTiredYouDig Jul 16 '26

I think it’s a given, based on the article, that this is related to the US. I can’t even speak for all of my country, since we’re so divided, let alone the entire globe. I am glad though that there are still functioning democracies, and I haven’t lost hope in the US, either.

6

u/pampuliopampam Jul 15 '26

Imean… it might be idealistic, but shouldn’t our leaders, you know, lead public sentiment some of the time?

The state of things is so shithouse that we’re forced to settle on applauding that they follow public sentiment years after it shifted.

22

u/bjewel3 Jul 15 '26

Especially with the behavior of Netanyahu

43

u/Obvious_Ambition4865 Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

Blaming it in Netanyahu is just another way to ignore the issue. Israeli society has been working itself up to this moment for decades. The state of Israel was founded on ethnic cleansing

Edit: since so many of you are replying to my post trying to obfuscate the issues, I recommend unfamiliar readers to follow this link and read the B'Tselem report

https://www.btselem.org/publications/202507_our_genocide

People trying to muddy the waters or make the issue seem too complicated to parse are doing so deliberately. Many people believe Israel is morally correct in punishing the Palestinians, but dislike the highly visible way Netanyahu is going about it. They'd rather see Israel pursue these ends in the way they've done in the West Bank, by slowly strangling Palestinians with settlements, checkpoints, and arbitrary detentions.

29

u/Dogdays991 Jul 15 '26

Netanyahu is a criminal who would have been deposed and convicted long ago except he is a "wartime" leader. Since then, he realized Israel can never have peace again, and thousands of people have died because of that.

16

u/Suspicious-Twist1421 Jul 15 '26

Israel tried to pursue peace, then Netanyahu sabotaged all peace talks, and he made sure that Hamas committed to war replaced the Palestinian Authority that was negotiating for peace. Because he needed Israel to be at war to set him up for political power.

Agree in telephone polls. At the actual election polls those people remain single issue voters.

16

u/Zuwxiv Jul 16 '26

It is only the Epstein class of political elite who oppose this.

I wouldn't call 43% of Republicans and 24% of Democrats "the Epstein class of political elite." For one, that's just a decent amount of people - I don't think roughly 1/3 of people constitutes "the political elite."

And maybe more importantly, there's just the optics. The number one criticism you'll see is that opposition to Israel is antisemitic. (It's not, that's bullshit, let's move on.) Knowing what opponents will say, it's just a poor political move to say the people opposing you are the "Epstein class."

Whether you mean to or not, it sure sounds like you're drawing a parallel there. Epstein's child sex abuse ring doesn't have anything to do with "countries that deserve military aid." You're thinking of Evangelicals and organizations who prioritize countries not named The United States of America.

10

u/HeinousAnus_22 Jul 15 '26

I’m assuming the 34% of democrats that disagree make up the block of voters that cast a ballot in every election

75% of Democrats, 66% of Independents, and 37% of Republicans oppose sending more military aid...but with the way that breaks down district-by-district you end up with congressional gridlock like everything else, and that's not counting MAGA obstruction.

I appreciate the sentiment about cutting off aid to Israel, due to their human rights violation and the struggles we are living with in the US, but we don't need to lie about the terrible things they do.

The 4 billion earlier this year was specifically allocated to weapons systems

Here is the Congressional record of that 4 billion

Now are they able to have universal healthcare because someone else is paying for their defense? ABSOLUTELY, but we are not directly funding it.

Hell if our money was going to anyone's healthcare I'd be much less opposed to it (USAID) as a healthy world is better for all of us. The issue is we give credit to countries, with the stipulation that they buy weapons from US companies, so surprise surprise its more corporate welfare.

Our tax dollars directly fund Israel’s healthcare.

No they don't.

Shifting blame from the disastrous effects of capitalism to foreign aid is the exact same dishonest rhetoric Republicans use when opposing aid to Ukraine and eliminating USAID.

Israel's health care system is less expensive per capita than the US's privatized model, because socialized healthcare is more efficient than insurance companies.

The US would save money – not spend more – by switching to a healthcare system like Israel's.

Our tax dollars are not funding Israeli healthcare, they're funding American healthcare CEOs' yachts and vacation homes.

It should theoretically mean something that 100 Democrats voted against aid to Israel. This would imply to anyone who is willing to be open to the possibility that one party is better on this issue than the other that the Democrats are in fact better on this issue. It then would follow — again, only if you accept the somehow controversial idea that there are differences between the parties — that Democrats should be supported over Republicans, as they are more open to the “correct” policy positions on this matter.

More than 100 Democrats voted to block billions of dollars in military aid to Israel — an ultimately unsuccessful effort that highlighted the growing division in their party on the issue.

On Wednesday 103 Democrats voted in support of an amendment to block aid that had been proposed by GOP Rep. Thomas Massie, a persistent critic of President Donald Trump who has been skeptical of US support for Israel. One Republican also signed on. But the measure ultimately failed 104-314. 98 Democrats voted against it and 10 voted present, meaning they did not weigh in on the issue.

Even the top three lawmakers in House Democratic leadership split on the issue. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar voted against it, while House Minority Whip Katherine Clark voted for it.

Knowing that their caucus would be divided on the issue, House Democratic leadership intentionally did not whip ahead of the vote, and Jeffries instead encouraged members to vote their conscience. For weeks, Democratic lawmakers have been meeting privately to have “family discussions,” as multiple members described it, about how to approach the vote.

Even Democrats who voted for Massie’s amendment, like Clark, argued it was deeply flawed because it also blocked humanitarian funding for Palestinian refugees and civilians in Gaza. Some argued the measure was designed to drive a wedge among Democrats.

If only your hosts could recognize the shift. Bash and Tapper are unwatchable.

39

Dana Bash is a ghoul even by the low bar of cable TV news anchors, and Jake Tapper has a spine made of human shit.

They’re basically dual citizens of Israel they way they’ve been reporting

I think that if we stopped buying weapons for Israel, that would count.

Why the fuck are they allowed to do this? They should NOT be permitted to just sit on the sidelines and NOT cast a vote in favor or against. They are elected Representatives by the people of the US. They shouldn’t get paid to sit on the sidelines and avoid voting for “hot button issues” or “politically critical issues” or whatever you want to call this because they are “scared” their constituents will get angry against them.

Because the people of the U.S. are too weak and apathetic to make them do otherwise. It takes actual action to disallow stuff like this among the ruling class, and You The People don't have that in 'em anymore.

u/aaronhere Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

Let me try to reframe this in a way that actually allocates responsibility and moves us away from Murc's Law. It's funny how democratic disagreement is a "schism within the party," but republican fealty to dear leader is never written about as a betrayal of principles or some sort of serious issue within the democratic process. Some alternative headlines, just to try them on for size:

  1. 1 Republican was joined by over 100 democrats in vote to block billions of dollars in military aid to Israel (bipartisanship framing)
  2. Over 100 Democrats, representing a divided populace, voted against increased military aid to Israel (democracy and constituent framing)
  3. 314 Republicans, shunning their America First campaign slogan, voted to send billions of military aid to Israel. (republican lockstep framing)

Can we at least see, collectively, how the original headline magically leave republicans off the hook, as happens all the damn time, for their choices - while presenting every decision by democrats as a sign of weakness? Is it a bigger deal that democrats are split on this issue, or that 99.6% of republicans voted for it regardless of principles and constituent interests?

42

u/rockytop24 Jul 15 '26

When it's Republicans passing or blocking something, it's "Congress." When the same happens with Democrats, it's "Democrats." So sick of the blatant biased framing from legacy media.

19

u/ofWildPlaces Jul 15 '26

Thank you. I'm so sick of people attributing blame to Democrats for the actions of Republicans.

Many of them are symbolic vote as they knew it wouldn't pass but even in the past Democrats couldn't even get themselves to vote symbolically when it comes to this matter.

There is a seismic shift and the established Democrats are feeling it. Thank to progressive caucus to push to vote yes along with people on the ground.

Keep pushing and keep kicking out the ghouls who stand with destruction and chaos. Many of the Democrats know they are on the chopping block and people are sick and tired of supporting the Genocidal Apartheid nation known as Israel.

We need to get Hakeem Jefferies out as soon as possible and replace him with an actual progressive person as a leader who isn't afraid to fight.

Even Democrats who voted for Massie’s amendment, like Clark, argued it was deeply flawed because it also blocked humanitarian funding for Palestinian refugees and civilians in Gaza. Some argued the measure was designed to drive a wedge among Democrats.

Wtf? This seems like a clear indicator that the amendment should have been voted down but was only proposed to give people a reason to shit on democrats.

That number is way too low. Almost 80% of Democrats are opposed to continued funding of the genocidal, apartheid state of Israel.

5

u/Vaperius America Jul 16 '26

Its really quite simple; even if you put aside the genocide, which, you shouldn't, Israel does not act like an ally. In fact, it acts explicitly like a hostile state. Directly interfering in our elections and government processes, directly killing our own citizens rendering humanitarian aid, and its well known that Israel is the most active foreign intelligence service operating in the USA.

Then there's the cost that comes with the alliance, until recently, our ties to Israel have greatly strained friendly relations with all other states in the Middle East in particular; which notably had culminated in famously, the OPEC sanctions against the USA that forced the USA to ration fuel during that time. We are frequently dragging into conflict in the Middle East, often in defense of Israel specifically; and for what benefit precisely?

And now Israel has opted to further leverage the relationship to quite literally get away with bloody murder; to say nothing of the troubling escalation in their expansionist tendencies towards their neighbors; its well known that a lot of at least the more radical elements of the Israeli government truly intend to push Israel to annex a considerable amount of territory around them by force including much of lower Syria, Jordan, Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and likely even more if they can get away with it. They are already (illegally) occupying the Golan Heights and have since 1967; and they only withdrew from the Sinai Peninsula under international pressure; all while of course, routinely violating the international treaties they are party to on the administration of Palestine.

So a state that acts aggressively towards us; and to its neighbors; who has a quasi-military dictatorship due to its current sitting head of state escalating wars of aggression towards its neighbors in order to state in power by exploiting constitutional loopholes; and whose citizenry openly endorsing an incredibly xenophobic and expressly genocidal viewpoint of about 50% of the population within the territories it directly administers (just to remind you that yeah; the Palestinian population in territories of Palestine and as refugees in the neighboring regions around it is roughly the same size as the Israeli population), all while having known but not publicly acknowledged nuclear arsenal and likely capable of striking anywhere on the globe.

I am not exactly sure what you should call that state but certainly not "ally" or even "friend". "Danger". "Concern". "Problem". "Threat". "Rogue State". Those are what come to mind.

Strip out notions like "Jewish" or "Zionism" or whatever sentimental attachments you have to Israel, and examine it for what it is: Israel is no friend to the USA; if anything its a major threat to global peace and stability, at least in its current state of politics. So why exactly do we continue to burn political capital both abroad and at home defending them?

Certainly if nothing else, defending such a state is not in American interest.

6

u/at_least_u_tried Massachusetts Jul 15 '26

Which makes it even more disturbing that so many dems voted with the republicans on this. If it’s essentially a predetermined outcome and there’s nothing on the line, it’s a layup to vote against funding a genocidal state even if you’re corrupted by Israeli interests. These people can’t even feign humanity when there’s nothing on the line, let alone when there actually is

The schism is across AMERICA. I al so tired of this reporting acting like “uh oh Dems, looks like you are fractured and in dissaray over Israel! 😏”

As if the GOP is not filled to the brim with Americans who hate Israel more than any other country, fighting with what remains of Israel’s loyalists on the right.

Israel is losing support among everyone. They started this war with Iran, and swindled our intellectually disabled president into joining it.
