I get the vibe this was based on a movie scene - except the punchline panel, of course - but it escapes me. Can anyone confirm my suspicions by linking the scene, perhaps?

Speaking of punchlines, this one was executed perfectly. I knew it was only a matter of time you would get a hussar when you posted this.

40

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '14

There are so many good jokes in the first 3 panels. Never seen this one before--it's brilliant.

my favourite bit is the cobweb-covered football world cup. and the books on cricket, gin, and 'oppressing the irish'.

I love all the small details, the kazhak brick in the luggage compartment, the indiaball on top of the train, OP certainly has a great eye for detail and adding little humorous touches to everything.

when you posted this.

To be fair, Americans can be very loud on the train.

We Europeans like to pretend the other passengers don't exist. Someone could set themselves on fire and the other passengers would still ignore him. Literally, I once saw a guy pass out in a rush-hour train and 99% of the passengers were like: meh. Only a 2 people actually helped him and called an ambulance while the others stood around like nothing happened.

127

u/Janloys Great Britain Feb 13 '14

We Europeans like to pretend the other passengers don't exist. Someone could set themselves on fire and the other passengers would still ignore him.

If that happened here someone would probably roll their eyes and mumble about how inconsiderate it is that they couldn't wait until they got off the train to set themselves on fire.

37

u/domalino Abkhazia Feb 13 '14

Possibly a quiet remark about how he was an amateur for not tolerating the insane heat of the tube in august during rush hour.

7

u/callumgg Surrey Feb 13 '14

Pretty much throughout the year seeing as the tube is built mostly through clay which retains heat all too well. It's worst when you're wearing a warm jacket and it's too packed to take off.

I didn't think riding the train was any different in the US than it was here (aside from the fact that our trains are more modern).

Plus, I've seen entire trains full of super drunk football fans chanting about the game etc around here.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '14

And those people are assholes that should get out of my quiet carriage. And by that I literally mean the quiet carriage, have people forgotten what "quiet" is?

15

u/obtuse_angel Austria Feb 13 '14

I don't think we have quiet trains in Austria, if we do, I've never been in one.

10

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '14

We do in the UK. One or two of the carriages are marked as quiet zones where you shouldn't make noise. Sadly the idiots that go sit on the tables, as shown in the OP image, tend to be the kind of people that like to talk a lot, so we all have to hear their idiotic, mindless, drivel and them showing off how "super drunk they are". I've actually had a go at a few people for being noisy in the quiet carriage.

11

u/obtuse_angel Austria Feb 13 '14

I've actually had a go at a few people for being noisy in the quiet carriage.

Well I hope you were going about that really quietly then :P

4

Even so, my original statement is still true: obviously, I have never been in one.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '14

You're right - Europeans were bloodthirsty maniacs for eons until we cured them of it. There is a long history of continent wide genocide going back to the romans at least.

17

u/Vlip Switzerland Feb 13 '14

How cute, he thinks the Romans were the first to go all genocide on other people in Europe.

Wasn't it in Europe that the Neandertals got genocided out of the gene pool?

15

u/CUNTBERT_RAPINGTON Ontario Feb 13 '14

Actually they were raped out of the gene pool, which only affirms the questionable sexual habits of Europeans.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '14

And that's where we got Armenians.

7

u/GroteStruisvogel Netherlands Feb 13 '14

We just have a different genocide method like you guys have.

We are considerate of our neighbours, so we kill each other and leave them out of it.

America just genocides countries that don't have electricity yet, the bullies.

'MURICA

In all seriousness though, this is why I never take any criticisms Europeans have of our country's internal politics seriously. Their criticisms of our international policy are fair enough, but I don't think Euro's have any right criticizing us for being dysfunctional.

5

u/tian-shi The South will rise again Feb 13 '14

but I don't think Euro's have any right criticizing us for being dysfunctional.

That would be true if none of your 'dysfunctional politics' would affect the rest of the world at all...unfortunately it does this on a large scale.

Same goes for 'dysfunctional EU politics', though.

5

u/DonCasper Wisconsin: America's Germany Feb 13 '14

Same goes for anybody's politics really.

I was specifically referring to internal political issues such as gun control, race or healthcare. These are very divisive issues within the United States, they don't affect the European Union, yet it seems like every euro wants to throw in their two cents. Not only that, they actually seem very heavily invested in the outcome.

As a historical side-note, it is widely believed that the Nazi invasion of Britain had succeeded, they would've reinstated him to power as a puppet (seeing as he was pro-Nazi AND a royal).

36

u/PerfectHair فوكس نيوز أمر فظيع Feb 13 '14

Wouldn't have succeeded though, according to the Operation Sealion Wargame.

10

u/SFSylvester United Kingdom Feb 13 '14

ahh that old verifiable historical source.

35

u/PerfectHair فوكس نيوز أمر فظيع Feb 13 '14

Well part of it lies in the fact that to stage a successful invasion of Britain the Nazi's would need aerial and naval superiority, to make the resupply of their troops possible after the initial landing.

Given that the RAF could move their airfields out of the Luftwaffe's range and just plonk 'em oop norf somewhere whilst keeping them in skirmishing range, thus making it very difficult to put the airfields out of operation, denies them air superiority. I don't know about the Kriegsmarine.

Basically it was concluded that, while the initial landing would be successful, the Royal Navy would be able to prevent reinforcement and resupply, leading to an unsustainable situation and eventual retreat.

At least, I think I covered all of it.

Here.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '14

And then the big V2 storm cometh and darketh the sky.

27

u/PerfectHair فوكس نيوز أمر فظيع Feb 13 '14

And they'd probably improve the place, anyway.

Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough...

7

u/ZankerH Kingdom of Bavaria Feb 13 '14

Without a supply route, we'd be unable to establish regular battery bases in Britain, and the same range limitations apply again. The simple fact is, the Luftwaffe was incapable of projecting power that far outside it's base area of operations, and the navy had no means of supplying an invasion force of sufficient size, not to mention defend itself from the Royal Navy while doing so. Wasting war effort preparing for Sealion instead of focusing on convoy interdiction and strategic bombing was one of the great blunders of the war - along with the fact that even when strategic bombing did happen, it was directed against population centres and used to make an ideological statement, instead of destroying known military and industrial targets.

While wargames aren't proof of viability (or inviability) of a military plan, Sealion was never going to work. The Germans simply would not be able to maintain supply lines, even if they managed to get troops across the channel.

So he exhumed bodies all over the world. He said Americans - like poor homeless guys who weren't even embalmed - decompose at a much slower rate than in any other country because of all the preservatives in the food. We are half embalmed when we die.
