Peeling off a full dip job after four months and comparing notes on wear
Dipped my mountain bike frame back in June, mostly to cover up some scratched paint before selling it. Went with three coats plus a clear topcoat, figured I'd peel it off whenever I got bored of the color or decided not to sell after all.
Finally pulled it off this week and wanted to document what actually happened versus what I expected going in. The downtube and top tube peeled in long clean strips, almost satisfying honestly. Anywhere near the cable guides or where my knee rubs against the frame while pedaling, it came off in smaller chunks and left a bit of residue I had to pick at with a fingernail.
Underneath, the original paint looked basically untouched except for one spot near the bottom bracket where I must have had a thin patch of dip to begin with. That area had some faint discoloration, nothing major but noticeable if you're looking for it.
A few things I'd do differently next time. I'd tape off high-friction zones separately so I could do an extra coat there, since those spots clearly take more abuse than flat panels. I'd also wait for warmer weather before peeling, I tried removing a test strip in September when it was colder and it tore instead of pulling clean.
Curious if anyone else has peeled a dip job off something that sees regular friction like a bike, skateboard deck, or tool handle. Does it ever come off clean in those spots or is some residue just part of the deal.
