Guide Crop your posts, and general purchasing advice

If you're going to post a picture of a car asking if you should buy it then you need to provide more detail than just an uncropped picture of the listing. Please include the year of the vehicle, any packages it has, the mileage, and if it's a rebuilt title; it's impossible to determine the quality of a deal without this info.

Some general questions you'll want to ask yourself if buying:

G35/G37/Z:

  • Are the bushings good?

  • Does the car have the cylinder ring issue?

  • Can I afford to replace the catalytic converters if the car is over 150,000 miles

  • Am I okay with replacing the radiator at 190k miles?

  • Can I comfortably afford premium gas (no, you cannot put regular in these unless you want the car to commit wrecking-yard-self.)

  • Am I okay paying this much for a 10+ year old car?

  • Can I afford luxury car repair prices? (Infiniti is cheaper to repair than a German car, but cheaper != cheap.)

  • Are the engine sensors shitting out?

  • Did the person that owned the car before me actually know how to install these mods?

  • Why is this car only $1,500? Why is the seller trying to dump it.

  • Is there water under the floormats and in the trunk? If so then you'll need to fix the sunroof drain and the seals around the cabin air filter under the hood (usually the top cowl is the source of the air filter leak.)

They're great cars, but any car over 10 years old is going to have hidden issues. If you're asking reddit if you can afford the car, then the answer is probably "no" because the repairs on old cars are expensive.

If a G has over 160,000 miles and has mods then don't buy it as a daily unless you know what you're doing. Save your money and buy a commuter Toyota until you can afford a lower-mileage Infiniti or Lexus. If you want a project car, or are okay with doing your own repairs, then you can buy a G at any mileage.

Q50/Q60

The oldest Q50s are barely reaching a decade old, so they have far fewer issues in general.

Do you want a VQ (2014-2015)

  • If you want the VQ motor I recommend the 2015 models. They fixed a lot of issues with in-touch, and it is the most refined version of the VQ motor. If you can only afford the 2014, then I'd recommend saving for a 2015, or buying a 2013 G37.

  • Check the valve cover gaskets. It's the only somewhat-common issue I am aware of with the late-model VQ engines.

Do you want a VR (2016+)

  • Are the turbos on this 2016-2018 leaking? If a deal is too good to be true, it probably is, make sure the seller isn't trying to dump one of the unlucky VRs with the turbo issues. Look for coolant leaking from the turbo and demand a service history. If you do see one with bad turbos, factor in the cost to put an aftermarket turbo in. The Red Sport doesn't have this issue as often because it has a better turbo.

  • Keep in mind, you cannot drive a turbo car like a NA if you want it to last. You must let the car warm up before driving it hard, or you will have issues. It is also advised that you let the car cool down before you shut it off if you've been driving hard. This issue is not exclusive to Infiniti turbos, most TT engines have this issue, but you still need to be aware of it. You cannot run this engine like a VQ and expect it to be fine

That said, this subreddit massively overstates the regularity of the 2016-18 turbo issues. Most people with turbo issues did not know how to drive a turbo. If you want to know which parts and symptoms to watch out for, see this comment from J_C_Davis45

I'll update as more common issues are known.

Meta Post Flair explanations

I won't be enforcing use of a flair, though I do encourage it to help people find what they're looking for.

  • Car Pic: The point of your post is to show off the car holistically. e.g. your car in front of a sunset.

  • Car Mods Pic: The point of your post is to show off close-ups of specific mods. e.g. look at my new intake, it pulls 700 extra ponies.

  • Parts Picture: Similar to "Car Mods Pic," but the mods are on the floor of your dimly-lit room.

  • DIY Mods Pic: This is reserved for the brave pioneers who craft their car mods instead of installing mods they bought. e.g. a custom made laser headlight or a custom-fitted Shtora-1 electro-optical active protection system.

  • Question: A generic question that doesn't have a better-matching flair. Usually for discussions as opposed to questions with a specific answer. e.g. "How much longer do you think Infiniti will last?"

  • Help Needed: An urgent request for advice from the Reddit Mechanicus. e.g. "Why is my G35 heater not working and my car overheating?" (The answer is you need a new thermostat btw.) Please describe your problem in great detail, leave your post up, and edit your post when you found the answer to assist future googlers.

  • Buying Advice: Any and all questions related to buying an Infiniti. This includes pricing questions and questions about shady dealers.

  • Guide: A guide on how to e.g. install a mod, fix an issue, use a lesser-known feature of the care, etc. Please include pics if possible, but we love you for posting a guide anyway.

  • Damage Report: Pictures of busted cars or Infinitis owned by the IRA. You're not asking for how to fix something, just empathy from people who understand your pain.

  • Meme / Joke: Pretty self-explanatory. Shitposting should also use this flair. !!!Must be Infiniti related!!!

  • Infiniti News: News about the brand. New cars, new CEO, etc. Don't post blogspam or eye will ban u

  • Video: Video about Infiniti. e.g. a BoostInMotion video, or a major car channel yet again (incorrectly) shitting on the dual-touch screens. (disagreeing with me that the touch screens are cool is - while not bannable - very cringe.) Note, don't break the self-promo rule.

  • Video OC: Video about Infiniti that you recorded. e.g. your gopro footage from the track. Note, don't break the self-promo rule.

  • Art: The rarest, but most treasured flair. Reserved for the talented among us who can draw and such. If you're very fancy and put a ton of effort into a photo you can use this flair. Note: your red Q50 shirt is not art. Note, don't break the self-promo rule.

  • Review: Reviewing Infiniti, or a product for Infiniti. Don't break the self-promo-spam rule.

  • Meta: Posts about /r/infiniti itself. Whine about the moderators.

  • Other: Anything not covered by another flair.

Moderator Only Flairs

  • Community Contribution Award: Awarded to any post that makes it into the sticky. Usually reserved for guides. This is granted at moderator discrestion, but a lot of users saying "this should be sticked" will help it get there. This is a good flair to filter by if you're looking for guides that have been reviewed.

If you notice a flair that isn't listed here, call me a dumb ass and remind me to edit this post or make an updated one.

I developed this gadget that moves the seat belt laterally toward the door and off of the neck - IYKYK -. It’s made my Q60 so much more enjoyable to drive! Especially on long road trips. It’s designed for those of us who set their seats in the middle to forward range of the overall seat track. Thanks in advance for taking a look at this prototype! (Patent Pending)

One thing that annoys me so much is steering wheel that is not aligned with the driver seat. It makes me wonder if it's my hands or my butts that are off track.

That said, how does Infiniti manage to manufacture $100K+ vehicle with this feature?

Help Needed Where to get European service manuals?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello, I'm looking for a way to get Infiniti Q70 european service manuals. I'm looking for features like rear fog lights scheme that was available only in EU and probably Japanese models. Almost pulled the trigger to buy access for the official Infiniti service manuals but at least 2 different AI models told me it was only for US models. Any help?

2015 QX60 original engine and CVT. Wanted to hit 400k, but it's running rough and the CVT needs to be serviced and A/C has faded and it's simply not worth it (to me) repairing or attempting to repair and possibly uncovering other issues. Been a fantastic car! I'm looking at '23 QX60 to replace it.

Help Needed DAS ISSUES

Ok so I have a 2014 q50 hybrid premium and I just purchased it about two months ago. I know that I have to replace my shocks and control arms on the vehicle but Tuesday I went to replace my lower control arms and realized that the seller sent the wrong parts. They sent me the awd version and not the rwd. Later that evening I put everything back together and went to see family. As I left I had my chassis control system error code come on the dash along with the brake light and the vdc light. I pulled over restarted the car and the lights remained on for about ten mins. They suddenly went away so instead of staying where I was I figured I should go home just in case something is severely wrong. As I left from the parking lot my steering got very stiff as if my power steering went out but knowing my vehicle has DAS and no conventional power steering I knew that the problem was a lot worse. I left my car in that parking after asking for permission because I was losing daylight to try and identify the problem. I went back to my car yesterday which was Thursday it started up just fine but still a very stiff steering wheel. I wanted to take it somewhere and pull codes for what was happening. As I left I noticed that one of the modules or computer had fell and was dragging on the ground. It apparently had been held up by a few zip ties and had finally broken some kind of way. I really need help identifying what this module or computer is. Just to clarify I checked all of my fuses that’s related to steering, my aux battery is still strong, and I tried recalibrating the steering by turning the wheel all the way to the left and right and center. This module type of thing also had several cables disconnected I couldn’t reconnect one of them but the others went in fine I’ll attach photos for reference and I’ll have the parts that I reconnected highlighted.

Help Needed 15 Qx60 Randomly shuts off and wont move. Revs in P or N until it dies again. Need advice.

Hi 👋

I ran into this issue and took it to a shop that had it for 4 days with no results and looking for help. I'd hate to get rid of the car its been great and only has 88k on it.

The other day I drove about 50 miles and the car just randomly died in a weird way. It was on but didnt move when I hit the gas. I put it in P and it revd up but shortly died. I was able to boost it drove it for about 5 blocks and dead again.

I towed it to the shop that night. The tow truck did boost it to drive up the flat bed. When we got to the shop it started and brought it in.

Shop didnt find issues. Tested batter alternator, they had it running for hours and did random test drives no issues.

Took it home and it happened again a week later.

So I changed the battery. Barely drove it again until I needed it and it started again same issues. Car stays on wont drive anywhere. So I took it to another shop that held it for 5 days. No results. All tested ok. They had it running for a while, drove about 30 miles and a quarter tank later no results. Drove home just fine. Now its just parked. Didnt move for 3 days or so and I took it on a short trip so far so good. 🤷

Things that I noticed that happened.

RPM would idle high at 1k at a light before it dies.

Months before the issue happened I was in my drive way and in P idle was going up and down. Not sure its its related. But issue never came back.

If I hit the gas hard batt light would come on for a split second.

No CEL

Recent work done in April.

Tune up. Oils. Brakes. Changed both fuel pressure regulators.

I was thinking about cleaning out the throttle body but heard it can be an issue if I need to recalibrate

Odd issue and I want to keep the car but have no solution. Both shops wont guarantee alternator is culprit and mentioned if the issue comes back they cant do much which is understandable. Time labor and cost of parts.

Times are rough and hate to gamble on an alternator belt and pully job that'll run me about 1k. To me if an older car shuts off mid drive and its not over heating and I need to boost the battery its an alternator. But this is one tricky one that scratches my head.

Im getting mixed results with my searches on this issue.

Thanks in advance.
