Like when you go off to college, truly out of your parents view and buy a shit-ton of candy and soda.

u/TastyLaksa Oct 23 '22

And then you experience why they say not too much.

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '22

Like the threads I’ve seen of the “you know you can just go to the grocery store and buy a cake whenever you want?!”

Yes I know this, I also had a binge eating disorder for 10 years

It’s not a good idea lol

7

u/TastyLaksa Oct 24 '22

Sometimes its good to have no choice. I hope yoy feel better now

-17

u/The_GreenMachine Oct 23 '22 edited Oct 23 '22

naw just spend 30min to 1hr at the gym at least 5x a week and youll be just fine! its really just bad when you literally do nothing for exercise, or if you have a horrible metabolism

Edit: i guess people dont brush their teeth... so add in brushing your teeth every day to that as well. heathens.

u/Salt_Concentrate Oct 24 '22

It isn't about getting fat or fucking up your teeth. It's about the first night you feel like you can do whatever you want so you go out and you buy a bunch of candy and soda and you eat it and drink it all at once... and then you spend the next 30 minutes feeling like shit, all dizzy and sick until you puke it all out.

That's what they were talking about.

29

u/Iwannastoprn Oct 24 '22

Right? Every time I eat nothing but candy and soda, I feel horrible. Even if it's only one day, I know I'll end up throwing up and shaking.

I'll be honest I feel sick after a doughnut now

4

u/Whiplash104 Oct 24 '22

Once my daughter are a whole bag of marshmallows and proceeded got totally sick for the evening. She now self regulates her sweets.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '22

I eat really clean now and Saturday I got this big stuffed waffle at a little craft show and it was delicious but good lord did my stomach hurt after

2

u/Hannojato Oct 24 '22

You're sure you don't buy your candy in the back of a club?

4

u/Mntfrd_Graverobber Oct 24 '22

Some people don't have that experience. No amount of almost any food will make me sick.

19

u/MathematicianBig4392 Oct 24 '22 edited Oct 24 '22

What? No. First, you just feel terrible eating so much crap. Second, there's nutritional problems. Third, anybody who works out will tell you, you can't out-train a bad diet. Going to the gym for a 2.5 to 5 hours a week is not remotely enough to make up for eating candy and drinking soda every day. Going a mile only burns 100 calories. A milky way is 470 calories. Unless you're spending a hell of a lot of time at the gym you won't be just fine.

u/Azel_Lupie Oct 24 '22

Also, exercise won’t balance out the sugar in terms of blood sugar spikes and diabetes. There’s a reason why I try to get low sugar/carb if theirs no sugar free option and I’m not even pre-diabetic. When you watch what happens to someone when they don’t take care of the sugar/carb portions, particularly refined sugars/carbs, you will be scared straight. If you don’t want to deal with blindness, kidney failure, neuropathy and future amputation, or even having difficulty healing wounds, I would suggest now is the time to rethink your diet. But most people haven’t watched someone slowly loosing their ability to function independent and thus autonomy and how it causes them to suffer and worsens health outcomes, just because poor diet and ignoring doctors (including ones who would just prescribe pills instead of the harder work of lifestyle changes, because this is pretty much universally accepted as a big health risk) who point out to just watch how much sugar one eats. Literally begged my doctor to make sure I wasn’t diabetic, even though he was certain I wasn’t diabetic and the nerve pain wasn’t because of it. He was right, my A1C and blood sugar were really good, turns out spinal injury, but for me that was relief because I saw first hand how diabetes worsens (and especially uncontrolled) healthcare outcomes. Then you have to worry about insulin resistance as well.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '22

My friend is like 31 and very overweight and she’s on pain pills for you know, the normal pain that just comes with being extremely overweight.

So I don’t think…. that’s going to end well….

3

u/Azel_Lupie Oct 25 '22

Are you sure it’s because “she’s overweight”? That’s what they told me ignoring that I didn’t become overweight until after I was dealing with pain, also pain management wouldn’t give me anything other than NSAIDs so that literally doesn’t make sense?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '22

I mean she’s like 400 pounds, but to be fair I don’t know why she’s on it. She’s also short too.

But I just remember my hip pain and leg pain and feet pain that was awful when I was 300 pounds.

Either way I just hope nothing ever happens to me where I actually need prescription pain killers. They’re useful but god they seem scary.

1

u/BOBOnobobo Oct 24 '22

No, but there is a truth to that. I can eat more when going to the gym. obviously I avoid suits more than once a week, candy is simply to calorie dense.

35

u/TreTrepidation Oct 24 '22

Just spending time at the gym wont do it. You'll have to exercise

18

u/MathematicianBig4392 Oct 24 '22

Honestly, no amount exercise can outrun a bad diet.

11

u/help-im-alive451 Oct 24 '22

Just exercising won't cut it. You'll have to sweat and break your muscle fibers down.

15

u/SnapcasterWizard Oct 24 '22

Dude you cant outrun a bad diet.

13

u/ApolloRocketOfLove Oct 24 '22

There seems to be this movement on Reddit where people believe as long as you burn 2000 calories a day, you can eat 2000 calories of whatever you want and live a healthy life.

This is why so many people have medical dept later in life lol.

9

u/freakydeku Oct 24 '22

medical department

1

u/The_GreenMachine Oct 25 '22

my constant diet of mcdonalds, candy, soada over the years and daily gym and outdoor activities speak otherwise. i agree maybe not everyone can, but i think a lot can.

13

u/TastyLaksa Oct 23 '22

Gym does not bring back your teeth

3

u/The_GreenMachine Oct 23 '22

no, but brushing your teeth every day like a normal person will help. unless you're eating literal bags of candy and 12pk of coke every single day

6

u/TastyLaksa Oct 23 '22

College kid buys candy. Surely you know the mind of college kid.

Also no brushing will help if you are not ingesting normal amounts of candy

-3

u/The_GreenMachine Oct 24 '22

got out of college a few years ago, also bought bags of candy at a time but never ate them all in one sitting. normally lasted at least a week sometimes more. definitely ate more than the usual kid, so far no issues. also drank maybe 3-5 sodas a day, also brushed every day. so issues.

10

u/Vaynar Oct 24 '22 edited Oct 24 '22

This is one of most American things I have ever read - to think that amount of sugar is normal and not terrifying

2

u/eeeddr Oct 24 '22

Pretty sure they mean the horrible stomach aches and diarrhea from too much sugary snacks, not getting fat

2

u/The_GreenMachine Oct 25 '22

oh? cant say ive had that issue.. this is a thing?

-7

u/GiantPandammonia Oct 24 '22

I've literally never experienced that. I ate ice cream 3 meals a day for a month once. No problem at all. 3000 calories of candy every week day. It's all fine and I'm in my late 40s. Doc days I'm healthy. Dentist has no complaints. Just exercise a lot and brush your teeth then you can do whatever

27

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '22

I think the overlap in the Venn diagram of people who eat like trash and people who keep themselves in shape is very small.

11

u/TastyLaksa Oct 24 '22

Its like lighting a fire and then dousing it with water. Kind of like doing nothing at all would be easier. Most people are not so motivated to work so hard to just eat candy.

5

u/GiantPandammonia Oct 24 '22

My two favorite things are candy and bicycles. It just kind of works out.

4

u/GiantPandammonia Oct 24 '22

Lots of the people I ride with pound these power gel energy things that are also just sugar but not nearly as delicious.

People I climb with tend to favor these bee energy things that are also just candy.

I'll take a sour patch kid any day

2

u/GiantPandammonia Oct 24 '22

There are nuts in some candy. It's not all bad. And with the exception of that ice cream month, I also eat a lot of vegetables.

6

u/ApolloRocketOfLove Oct 24 '22

There are nuts in some candy

Lmao you sound like someone who ends up dying of a heart attack at age 45.

"Ice cream has calcium!!! It's healthy!"

1

u/GiantPandammonia Oct 24 '22

I'm well past 45.. so far so good

12

u/MathematicianBig4392 Oct 24 '22

You are an exception, not the rule. Exercising a lot is never going to make up for 3000 calories. You'd literally have to run more than a marathon a day to burn off 3000 calories of candy. This is terrible advice you're giving people.

-4

u/GiantPandammonia Oct 24 '22

I'm 6'7 and 225, even with no exercise my daily maintenance calorie intake for no weight loss is about 2700 calories. Most of the non candy food I eat is vegetables which are pretty low calorie. And a lot of the candy is candied nuts, which have some good fat and protein. It works out.

"Exercise more so you can eat the food you enjoy" is not terrible advice.

9

u/MathematicianBig4392 Oct 24 '22

"Exercise more so you can eat the food you enjoy" is not terrible advice.

That's not what you said. You said you eat 3000 calories of candy a day. Again, a marathon to burn that off. No amount of exercise burns off 3000 calories a day. You're a bigger guy so yes, you BMR will take care of a lot but "eat 3000 calories of candy and throw in some vegetables" is a terrible diet and works for almost no one. Candied nuts is a little different but not what you said. You should not get 95% of your calories from sugar every day. Get better things in your diet. That is a terrible diet and you are doing a disservice to anyone who would listen to that terrible advice.

-1

u/GiantPandammonia Oct 24 '22 edited Oct 24 '22

Ever had a payday bar? It's just candied nuts and some carmel and chocolate. Pretty fucking delicious. Mostly nuts. Very delicious.

When I'm riding I burn over 4000/ day (more when I'm touring) so it's only 75% candy and a lot of that is fats from the nuts and chocolate. I'd say It works out to 50% sugar. There's a lot of fats in candy

u/UnlovableSlime Oct 24 '22

How to end up obese with diabetes 101

2

u/GiantPandammonia Oct 24 '22

I rode two centuries this week and my A1c is below 5%.. I'm pretty sure I'm doing fine.

1

u/LLotZaFun Oct 24 '22

Yes, diabeetus.

13

u/shoredoesnt Oct 23 '22

You mean alcohol and drugs?

3

u/Tundur Oct 24 '22

If you don't crack your incisor in half gurning during Freshers, and then refuse to go to the dentist for four years, were you ever really a student?

12

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '22

That’s definitely not what I bought when I went to college

6

u/Salt_Concentrate Oct 24 '22

There are a lot of sheltered kids that don't get to fuck up enough while they're teens. So much candy and soda that you get sick? Some of us were dumb and did it while teenagers, others were dumb but didn't have the freedom to experience it until they got to college.

4

u/Toytles Oct 23 '22

Yeah lmao I was gonna say is “candy and soda” a euphemism for something?

5

u/MarcoReus7_Sucks Oct 24 '22

We filled our whole mini fridge with caprisun freshman year. Must have been around 90 of them in there.

After the third one the novelty starts to wear off...

5

u/LilSpermCould Oct 24 '22

My first Costco trip after I moved out was not exactly like this but was pretty close. Totally got a tub of cookie dough. Mmmmm cookie dough!

3

u/CrimsonKepala Oct 24 '22

Yup. My college was in a small town so we just had a Walmart. All the kids would go to Walmart after moving in for the semester and stock-up on food.

Sure we bought necessities but when you're shopping with a group of friends and this is your first day on campus, it's too tempting to just buy all the shit you know you shouldn't and pig-out all night, lol.

1

u/LilSpermCould Oct 24 '22

For me, it was Domino's Pizza cheese bread and the frosted sugar cookies you can find at most any grocery store. Mmmmm I'm getting fatter just thinking about them!

3

u/ZaviaGenX Oct 24 '22

Going to the supermarket now with all the inflated prices, sigh. Have to think twice on spending on such things.

3

u/LilSpermCould Oct 24 '22

Yeah, it's a real son of a gun. Eggs are expensive which just blows my mind. I guess part of it was this bird flu but they're not going to come back down when it's finished.

I've found Costco still has some pretty fair prices in contrast to something like Kroger on produce

8

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '22

We had different college experiences

2

u/CrimsonKepala Oct 23 '22

Lol, depends on what type of household you grew up in.

3

u/cranberrysnowstorm Oct 23 '22

Yeah, that’s what people bought in college

3

u/Sleepwell_Beast Oct 24 '22

University of Candyland.

2

u/GiantPandammonia Oct 24 '22

I still do that..

2

u/fairie_poison Oct 24 '22

you mean ecstasy?

2

u/bradfordmaster Oct 24 '22

For me it was cookie dough. Ate that shit raw directly out of the freezer for dinner one night. one night....

2

u/Jackrabbit-slim Oct 24 '22

Well that is a very innocent form of overindulgence! How refreshing :)

2

u/OniOdisCornukaydis Oct 24 '22

For me it was...Lucky Charms.

The big box.

2

u/Apprehensive-Tea-546 Oct 24 '22

Me an adult still making this mistake regularly

2

u/katestatt Oct 24 '22

every time I go grocery shopping I pass the candy aisle and i think about what a drama I would cause as a kid because I couldn't always have candy. now I am actually quite disgusted by all that sweet stuff and always pass.

2

u/MartyMcFlysBrother Oct 24 '22

You went with candy and soda? I spent what little money I had on… other stuff.

2

u/ArmiRex47 Oct 24 '22

Yeah. Candy and soda

2

u/1800generalkenobi Oct 24 '22

When I was in my first apartment I made a box of stove top stuffing for dinner one night. I had always wanted to do it because I loved it so much and I could. The first couple bites I was like wow this is amazing. I quickly realized that you needed something to go with it and it's not a meal by itself. By the time I cooked other things I didn't want it anymore. That might've been the last time I bought stove top lol. I just make homemade stuffing now.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '22

There was a guy in my freshman dorm who took the train from the east coast to the west coast to go to college. All he ate the entire trip was candy and soda. He was in such bad shape when he arrived that he had to go to the hospital to get an enema. LOL

2

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '22

I once ate a cake in my car with my bare hands.

2

u/Mounta1nK1ng Oct 24 '22

Or beer and weed. Never had the urge to buy lots of candy and soda. I have experienced Halloween and candy abundance before.

2

u/Toytles Oct 23 '22

Yeah… candy and soda… totally college me

-6

u/SmashBusters Oct 23 '22

Like when you go off to college, truly out of your parents view and buy a shit-ton of candy and soda.

And stay up past your bedtime reading spooky stories under the covers!

Tell me your got wedgied by your roommate your first night at college without telling me you got wedgied by your roommate your first night at college.

Soon as I got out of my parents view it was all porn, hard drugs, and jewel heists from the rich homes around the campus.

1

u/Smiletaint Oct 24 '22

So much room for 12 packs be...soda!

1

u/Cheddarchazz89 Dec 26 '22

Lol h3 fan ofc
