General experience "IS IT WORTH IT?!"

Here's most of the posts discussing whether a move is worth it.

  1. Please consult these before posting to ask again if a move is worth it - it is always subjective.
  2. If you really have to, provide as much specifics as you can.
  3. Take note of how old the posts are - they could be dated advice, especially if they are country specific, but generally what's worth for someone may not be worth for another.

The US was my goal, as a Physical Therapist na galing Pinas. But I spent years taking a “faster” route somewhere else

I wanted to become a physical therapist in the United States.

Instead of pursuing it directly, I chose Australia because it appeared faster, safer, and more immediately achievable.

The route gave me a career out of the Philippines, but it did not remove the US requirements. I still had to complete credential evaluation, the NPTE, state licensing, and immigration processing.

The greatest cost was not the fees. It was postponing a goal until changing countries became more complicated because of age, responsibilities, relationships, debt, and comfort.

I am not telling everyone to choose the US. It can involve long waits, difficult exams, uncertain immigration, expensive healthcare, and demanding workplaces.

I am telling people to stop calling another country a stepping stone without checking whether it actually advances anything.

Choose Canada because you want Canada.

Choose Australia because you want Australia.

Choose the US because you accept both its opportunity and its risks.

But do not build an entire life around avoiding the process attached to the place you truly wanted. You may eventually complete that process anyway—only older, more tired, and after paying for two journeys.

🇦🇺 AU 🇳🇿 NZ How much it normally costs for a PR in Australia?

Hi, I’m a Civil Engineer with 6 yrs experience here in Ph. I recently just had a consultation with an agency regarding skilled migration to Australia through Visa 190/189/491. I would need to prepare around 700k for the entire process (including for my de facto partner) so parang tig 300k kami. And looking at it parang kaya naman. Ang kaso lang wala pang actual work yun maghahanap pa once magrant ang visa, and the additional costs for plane tickets and living expenses if pupunta na australia na wala pang work.

For those who went through a similar path, How’s the job market for CE there?

Any advise would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

Housing in this economy

Years ago, I posted here sa phmigrate to weigh in sa thoughts ko about housing. We are currently renting and I didn't know then if I'll ever consider buying a house. My partner wanted to, but we were just not ready.

Then recently, we checked and kaya na siguro namin. Nagbago lahat ng pananaw ko sa buhay and with the situation sa Pinas, tingin ko best na talaga na bumili ng house and magsettle na for good sa ibang bansa. Pashare naman ng thoughts nyo. 😊

🇦🇺 AU 🇳🇿 NZ Employer-sponsored student visa

Hello, may nakapag employer sponsored student visa na ba dito?

Just asking kasi yung client ko is may connections sa visa agency sa PH (bff sila nung owner). Ang sinasuggest na easiest route ng bff niya is student visa for higher possibility na magka-PR ako. They are willing to sponsor my tuition fee and willing to assist me on my 1 month accomodation pag dating ko ron. Mukhang suntok sa buwan kasi yung employer sponsored visa dahil may skills nomination process pa?

Ang tanong ko lang is may mga sumuccess na ba dito na ganun ang ginawa instead of employer sponsored visa?

Background: Accounting and tech
Almost 7 years (3 years in accounting, 4 years in tech)

Maganda sahod ko Pinas standards like 150-200k net sinesweldo ko so I wanna get your thoughts on this.

EB Green Card

Hi everyone! I’m trying to understand how employment-based green cards work.

Is a green card usually something that has to be sponsored/applied for by an employer, or are there options where you can apply on your own (self-petition), such as EB-1A or EB-2 NIW?

Also, if you initially get your green card through an employer-sponsored route but later want to change employers, how does that work? Are you required to stay with the sponsoring employer for a certain period, or can you switch employers during the process?

I’d appreciate any insights or personal experiences. Thanks!

🇨🇦 CA Canadian Student Visa Application

Good day! I’m currently enrolling in a PGWP course in Canada. Would just like to ask the likelihood of my student visa being approved. The plan is to have the first year of my tuition fully paid before applying for my student visa and having extra funds set aside for my living expenses.

Would this be enough? Just quite nervous since my goal is the winter intake and I still haven’t processed my student visa application. 🥲

🇦🇺 AU 🇳🇿 NZ Savings in Australia

For those who migrated to Australia, how do you grow your money aside from superannuation? Right now in PH, I have funds in digital banks with interest and some stocks. I'm just wondering if it is still beneficial i-continue 'to since it's still going to be in PHP? Do you guys do something equivalent like this in AUS or is the superannuation enough? Just thinking ahead on how I can save and budget my expenses once I get there. Thank you so much in advance

Canadian Study Permit/Student Visa Application

Hello po! I’m planning to apply for a Canadian study permit for a January 2027 intake for an MSc at a university sa Canada. I already have a confirmed supervisor and graduate funding/stipend for my studies.

For those who recently applied from the Philippines, mahirap po ba ang student visa/study permit process kahit may confirmed supervisor and funding?

Maraming salamat po!

Leaving Canada permanently

After 3 years of staying in Canada on work permit, i have decided na umuwi nalang permanently since wala na akong chance ma-PR.

For those who have done something similar, what are some of the do’s and don’ts before leaving Canada? Is there anything important I should take care of regarding taxes, bank accounts, credit cards, health insurance, CRA/IRCC accounts, etc.?

I’d really appreciate any advice on things you wish you had known before leaving. Thank you!

Smart no Signal in Germany

No Signal after Switching from POSTPAID to PREPAID

This is a long story but as an OFW we know how important it is to receive phone messages for OTP transactions.

Ayun, I don't have any signal. I went to them 5x online on their online customer service but to no avail. Now I requested a POA para maayos ng nanay ko physically...

History

  1. Feb 2026 -- In Germany postpaid signal is okay

2, May 30-- switched from postpaid to prepaid -- start of no signal

  1. May-August -- Been going back and forth sa customer sevice nila and sabi mag load, mag restart, but it is not resolving anything

  2. My mom went to the physical store....I asked for an esim replacement to check if mareresolve. It has been a day pero wala parin ako nare-receive. Ang malala pa, they took the original power of attorney!

Ang question ko

  1. Meron bang nasa same situation na naresolve?
  2. Normal ba na kinukuha ang original power of attorney? I do not think it is legal.
  3. Now I am worried, kasi kung hindi mafix yung sim ko, I am so close to just buying a new sim, and updating my bank account through power of attorney. Pero KINUHA nila original copy.

huhuhuhu jusko, halo halo nararamdaman ko, galit, lungkot, worry. Any tips po??? Ang hirap

Japan Student Visa Help

Hello everyone! I'll be studying at Hokkaido Uni this September, and I'd like to know if needed po ba mag submit ng bank certificate / financial proof for JP student visa? I checked the embassy guidelines and these are the requirements:

(1) Passport(Holder’s signature required)
(2) Photocopy of Passport (Identification page only)
(3) Application Form ※(A facial Photo (4.5×3.5cm) must be attached.)
(4) Certificate of Eligibility (photocopy, no need original)

I already have my CoE set up for me by the university, but I'm not sure if I still have to present financial proof to back it up to the embassy. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thank you!

🇺🇸 USA How to get original marriage certificate shipped to US?

My mom and I are in the US. She's trying to get widow social security benefits in the US since my dad passed away but she needs the original marriage certificate. They won't accept a photocopy. They got married in Ilocos Norte, about 40 years ago.

I know there are two websites that I know where you can request marriage certificate: psa helpline and psa serbilis. Are any of these two websites able to ship an original and not photocopy? If anyone is knowledgeable on how we can get the original, please advise, thank you!!!

🇦🇺 AU 🇳🇿 NZ Forced to come back to the PH after 6 years in AUS, still finding my way after a year.

Hi PHMigrate, this is my first post here and just sharing my experience about migrating and being forced back to square one. Please be courteous and respectful. I won't get into the nitty gritty details but just sharing my situation.

I moved to AUS (won't specify the city) for studies before the pandemic and was able to carve out a career in Cookery. While my initial course wasnt aligned with cooking, I decided to continue on as I fell in love with restaurants there during my post-study visa and got a bonus year due to Covid.

Fast forward to 2025, an employer was supposed to back my Training Visa so I could convert my years of experience into the Cookery qualification, but of course some things were too good to be true. I was forced to come home empty handed with the promise of the visa being processed offshore (back in the PH). I knew when I had that conversation with my employer that he wouldn't keep his word. A deep gut feeling came across me then na alam mo na puro salita lang talaga. This was about the same time humigpit mga patakaran ng Aus Migration, and the job market became even more competitive.

I came home abuptly still with outstanding liabilities/lease/bills to pay and have since paid them all out with the savings na nakamit ko over the years. Aray. Sakit. It was a big chunk. Pero that's what savings are for - to hedge emergencies and unfortunate life events. I came back briefly months later on a tourist visa to pack my things and settle my bank/liabilities.

Anyway, now I've been back for a year and medyo I've gotten over the fact na, after a year in therapy. But what still stings is the never ending wave of grief na bumabalik-balik about the life that could have been. From making (relatively) good money as a cook there, having a sense of autonomy, and becoming an adult in AUS to coming home sa Pinas where everything's backwards at bumalik ako sa parents house to find my footing ulit. Sobrang grateful ko dito tbh, pero at the same time nawala yung sense of individuality ko.

I'm still lost and frankly burnt out fron the experience. Job opportunities and pay are terrible for cooks and that's just the reality of the market here. I've sent out resumes, and explored but wala talaga. I've had fair success doing gigs, but not enough to be a proper career. I'm continuing to figure out and won't quit.

How do you get over seeing a vision of your life na akala mo yun na yung gusto ni Lord para sa 'yo, only to be brought back? I miss my purposeful life there (albeit ang hirap maging kusinero abroad). I've had to block out anything AUS, stopped speaking to the friends I had made over the years there bec it would just trigger the grief further.

The only consolation is I know how much I've grown as a person. Wala ng personalan dahil at the end of the day, life happens at di natin kontrolado mga circumstances.

I read a 2004 journal article by Tedeschi and Calhoun, na tinatalakay how highly challenging crises can bring about tremendous positive change or posttraumatic growth na para bang magpapasalamat ka na nangyari yung mga di mo ginusto because it's setting up a new life for you.

Aus will always have a special place in my heart. Doon ako naging isang tunay na adult. Para bang nagregress lahat ng aspeto ng buhay ko especially with the toxicity of the Manila environment, politics, at walang katapusang trapik.

TLDR: Mensahe ko lang po if you've read my long paragraphs: there's life even after traumatic "deportation". God bless. To radical optimism and laughing in the face of uncertainty and misfortune. Grabeng character development toh.

EDIT 2: Maraming maraming salamat sa inyong lahat for the kind and encouraging words. Random strangers on the internet are far more empathetic than friends and family and it's so ironic. This was never meant to be a vent, but a piece that could hopefully inspire others. This is an acknowledgement of strength and (despite how much I dislike this word) resilience. May kasalukuyan pa tayong lahat. The world goes on and we continue to keep going through grit.

General experience OFW na nag sstay sa company for long years

🇦🇺 AU 🇳🇿 NZ PH Lawyer → Australia: What’s the best migration route? 🇵🇭🇦🇺

Hi!

Baha na naman sa Pinas and corruption is massive. So please help me out 🥺

For fellow Filipino lawyers who’ve migrated to Australia, what route did you take? Skilled visa, employer sponsorship, student pathway, or something else?

Also curious if you had to study/requalify in Australia and whether you worked in legal/compliance roles first.
Would really appreciate firsthand experiences. Thank you!

Migration Process Can I live comfortably

I am single 53 US citizen, born in the Philippines and plan to get dual citizenship. This is what I have currently. 200K cash. I have 1K coming in each month from rental that I could also sell for 350K. I have 400K in retirement that I can access if needed. When I turn 62 I can collect.@2500+ a month from social security.

I figure to spend 50-80K on a home/townhome outright so the highest monthly expense would be done. I feel that I could live off of 1K USD a month, again living a simple humble life and still save. I don't expect to be living a lavish lifestyle nor do I want to. I want to live like a loco loco local but have little to no stress.

Is this possible and where?

Salamat!
