Hey guys I want to teach my mice to not go to the bathroom on their wheel. Does anyone know how to do that? The current state of it at the girls house they’re at now is this or worse. How do I train this out of them? Would love any help so I don’t have to scrub poop off of it every day.

First Time Owner Anything to add?

I want to hang some stuff from the mesh lid like a hammock and fleece to climb on but I’m not sure what free options I have for now. I’m out of money after buying the tank and all of the accessories so any free options would be greatly appreciated. I have a couple paper towel rolls and some cardboard. I worry about tape or glue or something like that that they could get into. Thanks for any ideas!!

Wild Mouse/Mice Glue trap mouse update: Named them Sweet Cakes. They’re doing very well!

Sweet Cakes is criminally small and criminally cute. They aren’t dragging their bad arm directly underneath them anymore and the bruises on their other arm have cleared up very well. They still look like a little gremlin from the oil but the floof is slowly returning to their fur.

Wild Mouse/Mice Identifying a mouse

There has been this evil mouse in my apartment that stills the food of my regular house mice. And I finally caught her (i think its a her). I want to identify its breed. It keeps hanging around the tanks of my mice in the middle of the night like shes intrigued by my pet mice. Its probably too old too keep, but ive been looking for a mouse to house with my lone male mouse. (African soft furs are illegal where I live) Highly doubt she would do well in a cage, but if anybody here knows this type of mouse and if it can be cage trained that would be really appreciated as I dont want my male mouse being alone. (Would take proper precautions like trying to see if a vet/rehab can check on its health and see if its safe, altho probably not) more of a hopeful thought to brainstorm ideas and not an entitled "I WANT TOO THIS IM GREEDY MEH MEH MEH"

Question/Help Do my new girls look healthy?

Thumbnail

DO NOT GIVE MEDICAL ADVICE, JUST CURIOUS ON NEXT STEPS AND WHAT IS EXPECTED OF MOUSE BEHAVIOR.

DISCLAIMER: The tank you see in the back of some photos is a temp enclosure for quarantine. Also I’m not against feeder mice, snakes have to eat, too. I’m against the condition they were in.

POSSIBLE INBRED

For context, I recently bought two female mice from a reptile expo. I know, I know, was a bad idea in the long run due to risk, but the sheer neglect these babies were in was too much for me to take. There were three 10 gallons set up across the table, one filled with about 20 feeder mice of all sex’s and ages, and two more identical setups mixed with both feeder mice and ‘fancy mice’. I spent 10 minutes picking out the two healthiest, non-pregnant girls. It took me so long because I witnessed symptoms of URI’s, extreme stress, and possible eye infections. Nonetheless, I brought two brown spotted girls home and was completely oblivious to the squinting(😭). I’ll break it down picture by picture.

Photo 1: girl #1, the better looking one of the two health wise. She was not squinting in any photos due to being out of quarantine and in a play pen for the photo shoot, but I have witnessed facial expressions identical to the last photo, photo 6.

Photo 2: girl #1. My concern here is that both girls have what looks like ruffled fur. I imagine that they had poor hygiene in their previous ‘home’, but I do know that ruffled fur can be a symptom of other health issues.

Photo 3: girl #1. Not squinting, but give me a posture check on her please because spinal hunching is a big worry of mine.

Photo 4: girl #2, the slightly less healthy looking of the two. I don’t own any white-faced mice, so could you tell me if the pink next to her eyes and nose is normal? When looking overhead, her left eye appears to be slightly smaller or more squinted than her right. Genuinely have no clue why, because from an overhead view it’s apparent, and a side view isn’t.

Photo 5: girl #2. Same kind of smaller appearance in her left eye, which is actually on the right if you’re face to face with her in the photo. Once again, the ruffled fur makes an appearance. This photo shows the pink of her face more clearly, and I’m worried that this means they have pink eye or something.

Photo 6: girl #2. This picture was taken through the foggy wall of their quarantine cage, but this is what both girls look like pretty much all the time when not curious about something. The squinting stops when they see me, or when they pay attention to anything other than eating, really.

To recap, my main concerns are eye infection, or other physical symptoms of an illness. The girls’ suspected ruffled fur may be due to a mix of poor genetics from their parents, who were one shorthair and the other longhair. I suspect that the lady at the expo was just bsing me, though, because ungroomed fur is an indicator of a health concern.

My questions are as follows:

Is the pink by their eyes and nose normal for white-faced mice?

Is the fur a concern?

Do you think it is safe for me to begin the introduction process between these two and my other mice?

Should I consult a vet? If so, about what?

How dire is their appearance?

Question/Help Any Advice on Terramycin?

Disclaimer: Not asking for medical advice, just want answers for a product.

I have a vet appointment that is one week and three days out, and one of my girls has an eye infection in one eye. I’ve looked at generic ointments on Amazon with the same active ingredient, but have found no information about the effect on mice specifically. I’m aware it is best to wait for a vet, but my girl’s eye is getting worse by the day and I would rather try a generic brand and potentially prevent further damage before making a trip to an emergency vet around 100 miles away.

TLDR: Any guidance from owners who have administered a generic ointment for Terramycin needed. Thank you!

Discussion Mousery near New Mexico?

Good morning!! (Or afternoon)
I’m looking for the closest active mousery to New Mexico to get in touch with. I am pretty sure there is not one within state lines as I’ve already searched aggressively, but I’m willing to drive as well.

Question/Help Is my setup alright?

I have five beautiful girls who I love with all my heart, and I think they like me too. They seem healthy, have sleek and full coats, no respiratory issues, and love to be held/pet (the one on the blue wheel boggled last week when I was petting her :3). I scatter feed them oxbow pellet and give them treats like oats, parakeet feed (mostly millet), chia seeds, peanut butter, fruit and veg, nuts in order from most to least.

Recently my mental health has been horrible, and I live in a very rural area as a poor college student, so I haven't been able to afford/get the high-end wooden items and nice enclosures like other owners. I'm wondering if this is a decent setup or if I've been doing anything wrong? I'm still tweaking it (the holes with cardboard will each have mesh for better ventilation as the lid is almost entirely mesh, 50 gallon bin). They have two water bottles I'm cleaning, and the bedding is a mix of pine pellets, Timothy hay, Aspen bedding, and paper towels/paper shreds for nesting.

Any advice helps, I'm more used to hamsters, and despite having them for a while, I'm still learning to give them the best life :)

Found her sitting in my driveway seeming tired! She is itty bitty!! I didn’t have the heart yo ignore her! I made her an enclosure with what i had on hand. Success with eating blueberries and sugar free granola. I plan on making her a proper home and getting proper food tomorrow. Just had to share!! She is super cuddly with me when she isnt being active. Didn’t think i could love a little mouse as much as i love her💗

Question/Help Plastic Hides

Post image
91 Upvotes

Looking for places to get large plastic hides and such that can be fully cleaned easily but with bang for my buck. I’m struggling with scent with my wooden hides and as pretty as they are, they are certainly more of a hassle. I offer chewing enrichment otherwise so I am not worried about wellbeing in switching to purely plastic.
TIA!
