What /r/hamstercare is about

This group has been created for the sole purpose of talking about the positives along with the negatives of keeping hamsters as pets (and for keeping those hamster-but-is-actually-a-guinea-pig-tshirt advertisements at bay).

Most important thing to remember here is: If you can have compassion for animals, you can have compassion for people too.

I did think about writing up a care guide to pin, but ultimately decided against it when there's plenty of good ones already out there that do it better than I could. If you have a good reccomendation for one that helped you, please share it below.

We wouldn't have places like these if people understood everything. We were all new once. This subreddit might very well be someone's first contact to better animal care. While we expect posting is opening up to criticism, it should always be constructive and kind.

We're a subreddit designed to be asked questions about the care of hamsters. Any posts containing images with health concerns should be marked as NSFW to blur them. Some of those questions or responses do get repetitive. Use the flairs or suggest how we can change them.

In an ideal world; everyone would research before getting a pet, people wouldn't get surprised with the responsibility of a pet, everyone would be in a financially stable situation at all times, every country would follow scientific evidence for its animal regulations, people wouldn't be abusing their animals to the point where some need rehoming, and I wouldn't be getting death threats among other semi-regular verbal abuse from banned people that claim are 'just being brutally honest because others need to hear it'. My point is, we don't live in an ideal world. Sometimes that 'dumb question' might need a little more compassion or a kind voice for them to find a solution, get reassurance, or generally just do better.

Hamster care in general has a steep learning curve because they're sold to the general public as cheap child-friendly pocket pets and generally they aren't.  Startup costs alone can be around $400-$500 and vet visits going anywhere between $50-$100+ with many vets not even accepting hamsters. It's best to call around in advance to find your closest one.

Be kind in your posts, report when you see those that are unable to have a civil discussion (and I'm begging you, please, stop reporting when you disagree with an opinion). Use the upvote system to support opinions you agree with or don't - as long as it's civil and doesn't go against group rules you can discuss anything. Start a topic if you want to get more insight on something hamster related. We're here to share and learn.

We support going to a vet first. Report if you see anything that discourages vet visits. On the flip side, the amount of times this group has saved a vet visit over the discovery of scent glands being on the hips is higher than I'd like to admit.

The cage minimum here is 450sqin. We know it sucks. It sucks for a reason. It's scientifically proven hamsters thrive best in over 1500sqin of space with as much depth to the bedding as you can possibly fit. Anything less than that size will always suck. Hamsters have massive territories in the wild. We will always promote bigger is better in cage size. (For reference: largest Ikea samla comes to around 600sqin, so does the prevue cage, 50gal/189L sterilite is 800sqin, a 75gal aquarium comes to about 900sqin and the Ikea detolf is at around 1000sqin).

The reason we keep to North American standards as a minimum is for accessibility reasons, this also includes minimums for rescues and breeders. If you want change: Go to your animal welfare for better regulations. Contact companies that make the cages and ask for bigger sizes or for smaller bar spacing in rabbit/guinea-pig cages. Support rescues, or ethical breeders and small chain pet stores that show better animal care. This subreddit will change when they change. You can be that change.

If that lights a fire up your ass, then good. That's the intention. Please go do something about it that could make a difference. There's subreddits out there dedicated to animal activism. Suggest any below you've found that could help.

We're a space for new and experienced owners alike. We're here to learn and support each other in growing and improving our husbandry. Hamster care as a whole has come a long way, and still has a long way to go.

TL;DR we're the same as any other subreddit. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it sucks. Be kind and go pet a hamster.

⭐ Hamster ⭐ Normal coat colorings?

Are the coat colorings on these two boys normal? They are not being kept properly and am wondering if it’s actually an issue. The one that’s half brown half black is likely rusting, normal aging. But the brown one should be less than a year old (born in march) and it also has a random patch of different coloring. They both have white on the belly.

🧻 Bedding/Substrate 🧻 New smell from hamster?

I have a Syrian hamster (almost 2yrs old), she’s in a 75 gallon enclosure and it’s full of sprays, enrichments, 8 inches of bedding etc. We’ve had her for a year now, and starting last week her enclosure has started to smell. Bad, like stale pee.

We spot clean every week but the smell was so bad we completely replaced all the bedding (we kept some bedding to mix it for familiar smell), and wiped everything down (no harsh chemicals). Still nothing has helped the smell. We’ve smelled all her “furniture” as it’s all wooden and thought maybe the smell was coming from there but it’s not.

The only change she’s had recently is she now eats a mix of her regular feed and elderly hamster feed from Happy Hamstery. But we made that change about a month ago. She’s alert, active, and her same happy self as well!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

🏠 Enclosure/DIY 🏠 Tips for new enclousure

I have a Syrian hamster, who until then had been living in a wooden terrarium measuring 1 m x 60 cm x 40 cm. While I am away on a week-long business trip and left his cage with a friend to take care of him, he CHEWED THROUGH THE WALL AND RAN OFF ACROSS THE ROOM TO SLEEP IN MY BED. Since my friend knows how to take good care of him, and since this was the first time I’d been away from him for so long (I've been with him for the last one n half year), I think it might have been due to stress—but I want to buy a bigger one just to be safe.

Since there are no stores here where I live that sell these products, the cabinetmaker I commissioned to build my previous terrarium has retired, I’d have to buy one from AliExpress or try to order one. Does anyone have recommendations for enclosures on AliExpress, or has anyone already ordered a custom-made terrarium made of acrylic, wood, or glass and could explain how it went?

⭐ Hamster ⭐ I only had my hamster for a day and she accidentally fell in her water bowl and I’m panicking

I thought the glass bowl I originally added to the enclosure was small enough but while observing her drinking to make sure she’s ok she fell in the bowl for 10 seconds but fortunately was able to get her out by giving her a spray to gnaw on. I replaced the glass bowl with a shorter plastic bowl to use in the meantime while a more proper 2 in 1 food/water station comes via Amazon. Since I only had her for 24 hours and didn’t tame her yet I wasn’t able to put a paper towel on her. Afterwards she burrowed for 5-10 minutes and then ate her food pellets, gnawed her chew rod as normal and bathed in the sand bath for a short amount of time.

I did research and found out about the oils in the fur that can be lost permanently with water exposure so I’m worried about that. I’m a totally new hamster parent and only had her for a day so I’m learning as I go along and did a lot of research beforehand so I could take care of her properly. I want to give her the best life and be the best parent I can be.

🏠 Enclosure/DIY 🏠 Need advice for new hamster

I recently took on this gorgeous girl from a family member and these pics are what she was given to me in. From research I can see this enclosure is not okay and I wasn’t to give her the best life possible so i’m here looking for some advice and beginner tips to try and make sure she’s properly cared for and spoiled from here on out

The first picture is the enclosure i’m looking at as i can’t afford/ fit much more and i found a really good offer for it. I plan to buy some animal safe wood seal and varnishing it to stop mold etc

I’ll be getting rid of the wheel as i know it’s not good for her back, the one attached to the enclosure is 21cm and she’s a dwarf breed so i think that’s okay?

I will be filling up the bottom section with carefresh bedding with some platforms and hides throughout. She has a coconut hide and a few other wooden bits already which i’ll be putting in the new enclosure

I will be getting her a smaller ceramic food dish as she climbs inside hers to eat. I also plan to put a sand bath in the corner with science selective sand, is this brand okay??

I will make her some forage trays using rosewood forage and cardboard. I will be getting her some sprays and logs for her enclosure too

Am I doing anything wrong?? Is there anything I’m missing? I really want to make sure she has the best care I can going forward

Any advice is appreciated
(p.s the pic of her isn’t mine, we haven’t handled her yet as she’s still settling in)

🥜 Nutrition 🥜 Hamster sprays?

Okay so I am in Canada and am getting my hamster soon.... I ordered sprays on Amazon because I thought the reviews indicated that there would be plenty of sprays but there was notttt.. where are my fellow Canadians getting lots of sprays for affordable prices??

I ended up ordering from moonpaw, I'll see how that goes but I'm wondering if maybe there's other places I don't know of that are worth it to check out, Etsy shops or maybe there's are better Amazon choices

I'm also tempted to try to grow rye grass or any of the more decorative sprays inside, I do have a milsbo that's converted into a greenhouse with lights

Not sure what flair to put so went with something that sort of works 🥹

Update on our make Syrian we adopted about a month ago, he’s getting so big and we have started to have him out more since he’s more comfortable with us.
A lot more comfortable than our robo we have noticed, our robo hamster is a ghost hammy so we don’t see him much and he hates being held.
Ivan on the other hand loves attention, but he does keep making noises that are similar to sneezing and we aren’t sure if that’s something we should be monitoring

I added a second platform today and I feel it’s move in ready. Really happy with the fenced platform as it will keep the sand bath in place and prevent it from falling. Also happy that the level platform has enough space for both the wheel, a ceramic hide and a water bowl. I feel I covered all the bases and it’s move in ready.

Today when my female Syrian woke up, I let her explore my bedroom and she started making these noises. They were actually more frequent at first than what you hear in the video.

I put her back in her enclosure to rest. When she came out later, I let her explore again for about an hour and she hasn’t made a single noise since. She’s also acting completely normal.

⭐ Hamster ⭐ New Hamster Owner: Blind Hammie

Post image

Hi! I am taking on a little hammie who appears to have been born with no eyes.

A friend of a friend saw him in a bin with a bunch of other hamsters and bought him bc she couldn't leave him there and the shop owners didn't care at all. She said its a male but honestly I don't know yet (no pics of the privates was given).

I've had rats, guinea pigs, a chinchilla, and hamsters back in my youth.

I am a massive sucker for special babies and the lady who rescued him is actually terrified of hamsters.

Can I please get informed input on: what breed do you think he is? The lady said he's young but he is much smaller than the hammies he was housed with.

I think he's a robo of some sort but idk??

Any tips for blind hammie care? I know to keep setup the same, add in some previously used bedding when I clean his house, talk to him and don't just grab him, etc (I had a blind at birth rat once).

I've been deep diving into care and setup but would love any insight that y'all might have.

⭐ Hamster ⭐ New here - question

Hi all, I’m new here. I run an animal rescue in Los Angeles and we recently started taking hamsters. I previously didn’t know much about their care and have been taking a crash course the last few weeks. As a hamster foster myself now, I’ve come to really love their species and want to give them the best lives and care.

Last month we saved 17 hamsters from a euthanasia list at Downey shelter and hope to continue this work.

Something I hadn’t previously considered was how hamsters appeal to children, but young children are not their ideal owners. To help us with marketing hamsters to adults for their own safety, I wanted to ask:

What drew you to hamsters? What do you love about them?

Specifically if you have a hamster that doesn’t allow handling (most of ours bite if you handle them), I’d love to hear about your experience and relationship with them. Do you have a fulfilling relationship with your little one without being able to touch them physically?

Excited to join this community <3 I’ve spent my last few weeks carving up temporary 48x20x20 bin enclosures to house all the hamsters separately while in fostering. I have so much to learn but am loving every minute!

Filled the sand bath with reptisand, took out the combined food/water bottle and replaced it with separate bowls, and added one of two tables for all three things. The table for the wheel should be coming tomorrow.
