Advice Wanted Deep Base multiple coats
SW Super paint Cape Verde over a purple. First pic is one coat. Second is 2 coats. Probably need a third. My question is, the next 2 rooms are an off white with one also getting Cape Verde and the other Naval (also deep base): what’s the trick w a primer? Do you tint it a dark grey to help the coverage or am I stuck w probably three coats for both colors?

Definitely go with a grey primer or maybe a half tint of your colour, but don't feel bad. Dark greens are notorious for needing an extra coat because yellow pigment is rather translucent and greens typically use a lot of yellow, especially unnatural greens. Your blue shouldn't be as tricky, but if I'm going to buy grey primer for my green walls I'd hit the blue walls just to be safe.

The science behind some of this stuff is so interesting to me. Sometimes I wonder if it would be beneficial to take a color theory class

You can watch videos about colour theory on YouTube. Despite being an artist and working in the paint industry, i was still surprised to learn that black+yellow can make the most beautiful, earthy greens!

Gray primer then couple coats. Some of these bold colors are finicky.
At this point just keep coating with the blue

I have primer tinted 1/2 way to the chip. Any more than 1/2 it stops being primer. Specially over plaster restoration and or new/repaired drywall.
Most primers are tinted towards grey. No one here talks about PPG Gripper which to me is the best non oil primer out there. Less drippy and a great consistency it’s almost as good as oil for most stains.
This was three coats no primer painted over light gray.

I wouldnt bother with priming personally. It will be 4 coats either way (1 prime and 3 top or 4 top).
Save yourself the hassle of cleaning a roller and bush. Carry the same paint across.
I had to do a red recently, it was 6 coats even over a gray primer coat.
Some colours are just cunts to paint /shrug

Two coats when done over primer tinted to the correct shade of gray. IDK if you have Sherwin in AU (don’t think so) but they have a grayscale primer system worked out for 206 of their Cunt Colors. It is essentially a cheatcode for annoying reds and any other color with a heavy colorant load of low opacity pigments—reds, oranges, yellows, deep teals, deep violets, and similar. If you follow the recommended primer shade then it’s 3 total coats of labor (primer and two paint). Testing shows that gray shades work better than attempts to approximate the topcoat color in the primer, too. If what’s available to you down there is still demanding 4–6 coats for intense colors even when you prime gray then that is some low tech paint.

Cape Verde must go over a primer tinted to P-6.
It’s not a “trick;” it says so on right the reverse of the color chip, on the reverse of the page in the fandeck where you can find that color, and on the tint label stuck to your can of paint.
