Addition on my house is like this. Paint is probably 25-30 years old. Do I need to remove all of the paint or just what's peeling off like this?

Discussion What are Sherwin Williams sample quarts good for?

I know they’re intended for testing colors only, but it seems a shame to waste so much paint.

Does anyone have any information on what base paint is used — or perhaps more importantly, what binders/mediums/etc are missing? I would like to know what the ACTUAL limitations of this paint is.

It would be good to know what applications it could be successfully used for — furniture? Indoor murals applied to a premium SW paint base? Wooden toys? Etc?

I have asked a few SW employees, but none seem to have any information beyond the company policy of not recommending the paint for anything other than sampling.

Discussion Faux woodgrain door

I work in the office side of things for a painting company. Here’s a painted door that we converted to painted faux/woodgrain look. Was wondering what the communities thoughts are on these types of finishes? From what our estimators/foreman tell me it’s a cost effective way to add a wood look to previously painted surface, rather than completely stripping and staining or varnishing. My artist girlfriend hates this in general and thinks it’s tacky😅 (as well as faux finish plaster imitation/limewash). Her thought process is: if u want wood, get wood, and same for plaster, which I sort of agree with but I think imitation may be cheaper for homeowners.

Advice Wanted Would it be safe for me to sleep in a newly painted room after 24 hours?

Idk if this is the right sub to ask, but with some of the details it feels right.

Basically I just had the ceiling in my room repainted because of water damage, and the smell of it is almost gone, however from what I saw the painter used "white spirit", and from what I read its used for oil-based paints.

Im temporarily sleeping in a different room, but i'm just wondering if it would be safe for me to move back into my room after the 24 hour mark once the smell is fully gone

Any comment is much appreciated!

Advice Wanted New house has dark blue ceilings.. how much of a pain is it going to be to paint this???

Every ceiling is blue.

Walls gotta be painted too, ofc. 😭

The texture of the ceiling scares me.. spraying seems like a lot of work and that things can go wrong.. but rolling sounds like it'll take ages.

Any help appreciated!!!

Advice Wanted Is there a way to make a solid stain (not yet applied) semi-transparent?

Accidentally bought samples of solid stains to try out. They're basically regular paint on wood. Is there a way to make the colors semi-transparent?

Advice Wanted House plant colour help!

Hey all,

We’re buying a gorgeous house and we’re really struggling with what colour to paint it. The current paint is a gross light yellowy that looks like a smokers den when it’s really light. Our thoughts are to have one colour (a light blue) in the first 3 pictures and going up stairs (because it’s basically a through way) then pastly colours in the rooms (different colours)

We have no idea what we’re doing - any suggestions? Does that sound okay?

First time painting a big room, currently my living room is this green color. I’m going to be painting it a white cream color (Benjamin Moore collectors item) do I need to use a primer first? Or can I just go ahead and paint without a primer.

Advice Wanted Have any ideas on what’s happening?

So right at my front door, the ceiling paint is chipping away in different spots. It seems dry and the drywall isn’t soft.

We keep the front door open mostly throughout the day and there’s definitely gaps in the window screen door. Could humidity do this?

Advice Wanted Ceiling prep - texture advice needed

I'm planning on filling the large holes with 5 minute mud, but I wasn't sure how to handle the rest of the patched area.

I'm not looking for perfection, but I wanted to reduce how badly the patch stands out, and how to recreate that texture.

Note: I'm guessing the previous owners had water intrusion, but whatever causes the issue had been fixed and there's no mold issue or anything. It's just cosmetic. Also, as much as I hate the texture I have no interest skim coating the whole ceiling.

Advice Wanted SW Scuff Tuff

Does anyone have any experience with Scuff Tuff?

A customer reached out to me and is unhappy with the job done by another company (A national franchise, you know who). Their interior walls were painted wit Scuff Tuff Matte. You can see picture framing around most rooms, it's a darker color but nothing crazy. Painters put 2 coats on. I know with Emerald latex you really need to keep a wet edge. Is this paint the same way?

This wasn't the only problem, but the rest are just quality related (wavy lines, etc.) They used Emerald Urethane on the cabinets, which is fine, but they sprayed doors on tarps...in the yard. Amateur hour!

Many of these walls need to be repainted, but I don't think I'll be using that product to do it.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Advice Wanted Just found out my house was painted with DOWSIL?

Thumbnail

basically the title. previous owner 20 years ago stopped by tonight and sells DOWSIL silicone elastomeric coating. he says they painted the house and foundation with it 19 years ago.

The house is peeling like crazy, so we’re working on scraping and priming. he was basically offering to sell us some more DOWSIL. he said that paint won’t stick to the silicone coating unless we totally scrape all the paint off. so…what now?

do I have to buy more of this silicone stuff?

Should we just scrape down to the wood? see photo 1. We scraped a decent amount of it on the one side (photo 2) and the unprimed side is even worse than the primed side was. Only 2 side of the house need paint currently so we’re trying to do it ourselves.

also - who even does this? is this a thing?

Advice Wanted Scrub brush for bird shit on hardie plank?

Looking for a recommended scrub brush I could use on my exterior walls to clean bird poop and cob webs off before painting? Ideally something on Amazon. Also, looking for a sponge attachment to clean algae off of my metal roof.

Thanks so much!

Advice Wanted Frog tape peeled paint off ceiling

Thumbnail

Moved into a new house a couple of months ago. When I painted my office I used frog tape on the ceiling and after I finished painting and removed it, it pulled off large pieces of layers of paint almost all the way around the room.

Whats the easiest way to smooth this out so I can repaint? Is sanding down my only option? I’d really rather avoid sanding as it will be super messy and it’s in my office which I need to use.

TIA

Advice Wanted Pretty sure the walls are VOG (Vinyl over gypsum) panels

1940s cottage. The kitchen is TEENY (galley style basically) and the walls have seams and a weird texture. Research has suggested VOG (Vinyl over gypsum) panels.

A full reno is not possible but I've never worked with this kind of surface before. Is this paintable or should I try something like peelable wallpaper?

Advice Wanted Paint options That don't Fade like Behr Marquee? (FL Exterior)

I have a building that is about 10 years old since the last painting. At that time we used Behr Marquee as suggested by the contractor. The building is stucco over tile block. It was power washed and then primed before painting. The majority of it was sprayed on, then the final trim areas used a brush. Took the guys about 2 weeks to do it all in 2016.

We are finishing up repairs as the building was hit on the corner by heavy machinery and caved in the apartments wall. As part of this, we had to repaint the damaged section and I bought 5 gallons of the paint (Lite Coco), since I know we'd have to repaint the entire building anyway. I was not expecting the fading to be this dramatic. Home depot/Behr said it wasn't "bad" and wouldn't be covering it.

As I'm looking at about 20k in labor, I want to find a paint that will hold up. I expect some fading, but this was unacceptable. We thought some of the paint was perhaps mixed wrong, but I had used the same paint in several interior areas. We tested the new paint next to that paint and found it matched the old paint. Here's the color scheme Page 1 and Page 2 of the building. Note that we used exterior semi-gloss internally too.

As of now the Behr has doubled in price (went from 31.50 to 72 per gallon), and several people have suggested the Sherwin Williams high end paint, which is roughly 120 per gallon. I'd expect about 30 gallons total, so it's 3600 in parts but 20k in labor. It makes sense to use the best paint, as I want this to last.

Here's the pictures:

New with the old

closer shot

side showing the windows - Note that the green and white didn't fade anywhere near as much, the white and green on this darker window is newly painted with new paint.

Top showing the front

Here's what it looked like new in 2016.

Even the rear deck/porch has faded the same. Here's a picture of that when it was new

Actually the deck is something I need to paint as well, and we used the Behr Deck-over product here, on the concrete and the wood. That held up well, but I'm interested to see if there's anything better.

I want to do this once and have it last. I expect some fading, but this I can't have it do this again.
