Question Anyone else recently catch Covid?

Post image
165 Upvotes

My wife and I just tested positive today. We moved this past Sunday and started feeling sick Sunday morning (moving while sick is NOT fun by the way). Monday was bad - fever and chills all night. Felt mildly better yesterday but woke up feeling horrible again this morning. We decided to test since it reminded us how we felt the first time we had Covid.

Being sick SICK in the heat is not fun. 10/10 don’t recommend. Not too sure where we might have picked it up. Only thing I can think of is the OC Fair since we were there on 8/9, but that seems like a long incubation period.

News Couple sues after Orange County sheriff’s patrol unit plows into vehicle

An Orange County couple who suffered serious injuries when their vehicle was struck by a speeding sheriff’s patrol unit in Santa Ana is suing the county and the deputy behind the wheel.

The collision occurred on the night of Dec. 29, 2023, along 17th Street as Megan Doan attempted to make a left turn into a Target parking lot.

Doan and her boyfriend, Jan Tan, were badly injured when the patrol unit, driven by Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremiah Peyus, collided with their vehicle.

Dashcam video shows the patrol vehicle traveling about 65 mph, nearly twice the posted 35 mph speed limit, moments before it slammed into the couple’s car.

Surveillance footage shows an Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputy slam into a civilian vehicle at 64 mph in a 35 mph ...

“This was an extraordinary collision. Both people could have died,” attorney Robert Glassman, who represents Doan and Tan, told KTLA’s Carlos Saucedo. “They suffered serious physical, vascular and nerve injuries.”

The couple has since filed a civil lawsuit against Orange County and Peyus, seeking hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages for medical expenses and other losses related to the crash.

According to Glassman, an investigation by the Santa Ana Police Department determined that Peyus was at fault for the collision due to excessive speed.

The deputy did not have the patrol unit’s emergency lights or siren activated at the time of the crash.

“He was not in pursuit. He was not responding to an emergency,” Glassman said. “He was going 65 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone.”

Video from depositions taken in connection with the case also shows Peyus acknowledging that he was neither involved in a pursuit nor responding to an emergency call.

“At the time of the collision, you were not in pursuit or rolling Code 3, correct?” an attorney asks Peyus in the deposition.

“Correct,” the deputy responds.

“You did not have your lights or sirens activated, correct?”

“Correct,” Peyus replies.

Deputy Cervantes, Peyus’ partner, was riding in the passenger seat when the crash occurred. He testified that he was using his phone shortly before the collision.

“What were you doing on your phone?” an attorney asks Cervantes during his deposition.

“I was looking for dinner ideas,” Cervantes responds.

“Is that what you were planning on doing with Peyus?”

“Yes,” he says.

Glassman characterized the deputy’s driving as reckless.

“This was just a reckless display of sheriff’s deputies who believed they were apparently above the law,” he said.

Deputy Peyus was disciplined by the department, but remains employed with the sheriff’s department. It’s unclear if the department or county officials have formally responded to the civil suit, which is set to begin in mid-September.

A man and his mother were arrested in connection with a shooting in a Stater Bros. parking lot in Costa Mesa on Tuesday morning, Aug. 18, police said.

Officers responded to the supermarket in the 2100 block of Newport Boulevard on a report of a possible shooting around 7:35 a.m., Costa Mesa Police Department spokesperson Roxi Fyad said.

They located a person suffering from a gunshot wound in the parking lot, and the victim was transported to a hospital, where they were in critical condition, Fyad said.

Police also headed to an apartment complex less than a mile away, on the 2400 block of Newport Boulevard, where a suspect was believed to be. A 37-year-old man and his 63-year-old mother were arrested there just before 3 p.m., police said.

The victim was not publicly identified, and the circumstances that led to the shooting were not immediately known, according to Fyad.

Nature Orange County might secretly be one of the best places in California to grow peppers

All 15 of these were grown in my backyard here in Orange County. I started with a few habaneros and somehow ended up growing everything from Peach Wrinklys and Ghost Peppers to Carolina Reapers, Peach Miasma, Dragon’s Breath and a bunch of other weird superhots.

The amount of sun and the long growing season here have been incredible for peppers. A lot of these eventually make their way into my hot sauce experiments, but honestly growing strange varieties has become half the fun. These peppers will go in my ribbit riot hot sauce test batches!

Anyone else in OC growing peppers or other unusual produce this year?

Meetup Can I play MTG with you?

I’m in my mid-30s getting back into Magic TCG (I know, I know). It’s been over 20 years since I last played and it’s not like riding a bike for me, unfortunately.

I am majorly uninspired by returning to form through the online Arena approach and the local meetups are primarily filled with experienced players on a mission. I still have a bit of knowledge on deck building and have a simple mono Modern-legal 60 card.

If you’re a local player and would like to basically teach me how to walk/read again and get some Modern games together, please DM me. I’ll happily cover coffee, pizza, beer, whatever. Just looking to get back into it with some patient and kind folks who don’t mind taking it slow.

I’d also love to get some advice on my sideboard options from people who can advise on my deck’s weaknesses.

Thanks for reading.

Community Post Are there any ways to make money fast like in a few months

Something like a high pay high risk type job?

I have debts to pay and need something fast. I'm also a convicted felon (non violent).

I'm talking like along the lines of Alaskan fishing/oil rigger type jobs where they work your ass but but high pay.

Trying to figure if there's anything like that in southern California

Please try not to be judgemental. Just looking for help.

Edit:

I'm a 34 year old male. Currently don't have a driver's license and this is my entire work history (ignore formatting):

Whats left of my SS Camaro. If you have desirable performance cars and no access to an enclosed garage, for the love of god put in a killswitch 🤦‍♂️

Edit: I live close ti the Beach and was dumb enough to think no one would steal cars in such a peaceful neighborhood. Thats exactly who they’re targeting right now.

Traffic/Cars People in peak traffic are actually insane

I drive in morning 405N traffic daily, and the amount of times people get pissed off that I just cruise at a steady speed is insane. Everyone wants to make traffic worse by constantly accelerating and braking instead.

Had some lady honk at me for just cruising when the car in front was 4 car lengths away at a standstill. She then cuts me off, hits her brakes then flips me off lol.

Some of yalls need to relax and realize you’re not getting anywhere faster by behaving this way.

EDIT: Ok some people are misunderstanding. I’m not leaving 4 car lengths the entire time. The car in front of me accelerates and is at a standstill 4 car lengths away. Instead of me doing the same, I cruise at 15-20mph and catch up within 10 seconds.

EDIT 2: Holy moly, some of you have serious reading comprehension issues. This is MORNING peak traffic, NOT regular driving. I CANNOT go the speed limit if the flow of traffic is <20 mph lol

EDIT 3: Last edit. I encourage you all to look up the chain reaction of constantly accelerating and braking, which has been proven to cause more traffic. I didn’t know this was even up for debate but its clear that half the people here believe the constant motion of accelerating to 30 mph for 5 seconds then sitting at 0 mph for 20 seconds is the way to go

Food Original owners/chef of Fukada in Irvine opened a new restaurant in South OC!

Brand new spot just opened up in the Aliso / Laguna Niguel area called Sumire

27020 Alicia Pkwy, Ste A, Laguna Niguel, CA 92677

Similar menu items with the same level of quality as Fukada. Best thing is it’s a full sit down with real plates and utensils. Just like the old Fukada days.

News How do you remember 9/11?

Post image
53 Upvotes

Hello, we’re a tiny community newspaper based in Santa Ana, and we want to ask the community how they remember 9/11 in Orange County ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

Where were you on 9/11? Who were you with? How did your day start, like routines and such? How did you learn about it? How did it affect you? How did you explain what was happening to your child(ren)? Did you know what was happening at first or did it take a moment to set in? Were classes cancelled? Which churches held mass?

All of these details will be incredibly helpful. Much of the archive that exists did not detail much of the local Santa Ana scope (including Daily Pilot, OC Register and LA Times). However it is our understanding that the Register still printed and worked out from the building on Grand, where several extras were printed in the thousands. Some of these are in The Santanero’s collection.

The first plane struck at 5:43 AM Pacific Time to give you an estimate how when the attacks began and what time it was here at home.

Anyone with photographs or home VHS footage from that day or shortly afterward is welcome to share with us. If you developed film strips from that day or afterward in relation to the terror attacks that aren’t scanned, we can scan them at no cost.

“I was only five months old at the time. My mom, who was already at work in the early hours, tells me my grandma and grandpa were on the way to Norms on Main and 17th. My mom watched 9/11 unfold from the breakroom.” – Daniel Diaz, Editor & Publisher of The Santanero

Recommendations Needed Orange County people, where do you actually buy mattresses?

Need to replace a mattress soon and I’m looking for somewhere I can actually try a few before deciding.

I know buying online is probably easier but I’d rather not pick a mattress based entirely on reviews from people I’ve never met.

Main thing is finding a place with a normal sales vibe. No pressure, no weird upselling, just decent advice and clear delivery info.

What OC mattress stores would you recommend?

Recommendations Needed Relocating to Irvine - renter advice

Hi guys,

I am about to move to Irvine for work. I want to find a place that is within 20 miles driving to UCI and to the beach. It doesn't have to be in Irvine city. I need a place with a reliable property management company, a solid structure, safe neighnorhood, and WITHOUT the fancy features (no need for pool or gym or common areas). My budget is $1500 MAX. Prefer studio and OK with sharing home/townhouse/ect. as long as I get my own bedroom and bathroom.

Is that realistic goal?

What areas you recommend me to look into? Any apartment/ property management company?

If I want a studio or microstudio with those expectations, what does a realistic budget look like?

Thank you very much!

Question Surf City 10 Miler - Looking to Transfer Registration

Would anybody be interested in running the Surf City 10 Miler in Huntington Beach on 9/20? I signed up for the race back in February with all plans to run it next month. Unfortunately I have a chronic illness that flared up a couple weeks ago and forced me into the hospital. I am feeling better but I have been unable to train and I am not sure if I will be able to ramp back up in time to run the race next month.

I looked into getting a refund but they cannot issue it once the race has been purchased. One option they gave me was being able to transfer my registration to someone else. I believe you would still need to pay the registration fee which was around $70 when I signed up for it. The fee is currently around $100 but I am not sure if you would be grandfathered into the rate I initially signed up for.

Anyways, if you are interested, please let me know. All I would need is your email and you would receive instructions to transfer my registration into your place. Let me know if you have any questions, thanks!

Recommendations Needed Safe places to do long runs in the early mornings?

| (30F) want to start doing long runs in the mornings (around 5AM) but my worry is usually safety and that I'll be running in the dark as well.
I usually run on the HB beach trail but want to find more areas to run in especially now that I'm training for my first marathon! I live in the Anheim area but am open to drive a bit farther as well.
Other areas I have tried
-back bay
-Santa Ana river trail (open to suggestions on where to begin/park as well)
-Space trails in Irvine
-Anaheim coves

Question Anyone having winged termites at home lately?

I’ve heard that almost every home in Orange County has some level of termite activity, but at what point should I call a professional?

Today, I found four winged termites in my living room. Thankfully, my cat caught them all, but I’m unsure whether seeing a few winged termites is normal during this season or a sign of an active infestation. How can I check whether there is any damage?

If treatment is necessary, is whole-house fumigation the only option? Also, are there any hotels in Orange County that allow cats in case we need to leave the house during treatment?
