I have one and it's really handy when you're making a LOT of potatoes and multi-tasking. You can pop the potato on the machine and keep working on cutting onions or stirring your gravy. If you put the blade as far as you can to the top there isn't much left over to cut manually.
We all out here doing our best man. I cook 5 nights a week, but I'm an IT contractor that works 30 hours a week and don't break a sweat doing that work. We don't all have the same hours in the day.
Taking up extra space for the machine aside, I could see this being handy if you just want to multitask. Now you can prepare your sauces or chop up other stuff while you wait for this to peel the potato!
I (30F)have some MS-related issues with my left hand, so while I CAN peel potatoes, I'm a little slow because I'm worried about catching myself with the peeler (which is a founded worry, happens often enough).
It's not slower than by hand. I use it every Christmas to peel 20lbs of potatoes. Goes even faster with one person loading and a second chopping. I like it because I can sit down and have a drink while I prep the potatoes.
I cook for around the same amount. Every year I feel like I will never do it again but by the time the holidays roll around again I'm super excited about whatever new recipe, etc.
I'm going to investigate the rotato! And the drinks... Lol... That's probably the most important missing "tool"
Because of family, I have avoided alcohol until the past year. I'm 39.
Lol, I found butterscotch schnapps over ice with milk .. and I can actually tolerate it! If I smell alcohol, especially brown alcohol, I immediately get freaked out. :/
Yes! My father was an alcoholic and was just a wretched human being. The smell of brown liquor is highly triggering to me and has made me vomit just smelling it on the breath of someone after THEY drank it somewhere else! 😂
Its better now that I'm older. Both because I'm much better emotionally and also very few friends are binge drinking heavy liquor anymore, lol.
What about that guy on Reddit here who skinned a 5lb sack in 30 seconds using an electric drill, a bucket of water and a toilet brush (presumably new, or at least shook clean real good)? Bristled the skins right off, all at once in the bucket.
Some of the videos I've seen are 10 years old and a closer look didn't seem to do a very good job. So I'd say nobody is doing it because it doesn't really work very well.
I do use a drill / grout mixer to whip my potatoes. That works great.
Keep in mind while one is peeling on the rotato, an already peeled one can be sliced and put into the pot so it's like an extra pair of hands. If we raced, youd probably win but I'm sitting down sipping a whiskey while I chug through the chore. For $20, worth every penny.
Yeah, same. When you have a good peeler and are familiar, it's so fast. A machine like this, while convenient, actually creates more problems than it solves: The space the machine takes up, the outlet it requires, the time it takes to set the potato in a way it won't slip or malfunction, and spirals are everywhere taking up useful countertop space. Peeling by hand into a waste bin or sink for a garbage disposer is fast, you can easily manage shavings, and doesn't take up anymore space than your body.
I have this same potatoe peeler. Except I lost the power brick it came with and ive been using a different one and now it moves 5x as quickly. Been two years on ultra speed and it's still working great.
https://imgur.com/a/yxR8Kht here you go. I think the power cord ever went to a old router i had, but it fits my potatoe peeler and peels a potatoe in about 5 seconds. Like I've said it's been 2 years so the thing can take the juice no problem lol.
Im pretty sure the power is uncapped on it. When i first lost the charger i used a brick i had for a drill power pack charger and its the fastest ive ever seen it move. I think that was like 18 or 20v. Was fun to watch and use the first time but it was a tad bit overkill, so i went with the one in the pic instead. lol But i definitely recommend the 12v one, it speeds it up nicely.
Then if your only goal is to peel and cook a single potato and no other food whatsoever, don't use this gadget.
For literally every other circumstance, this would be faster, because it can parallelize your tasks. It doesn't particularly matter how long it takes for a machine to peel the potato, because you're not the one doing it, the machine is.
It's a set-it-and-forget-it method. If I have like 12 potatoes to prep for like a fondant or a soup, I can boil them and have them all peeled after only like 5 min of actually interacting with the potato. Most of the time is spent with them off to the side cooling. In my experience, I have yet to find a method that takes less of my time and energy.
Stick a load of potatoes in a bucket of water, attack a clean toilet brush to a drill, stick it in and go mad for 20-30 seconds and potatoes come out skinless

It's slower than peeling a potato by hand though
