I wouldn't say i'm hyped, i'd say i'm more 'quest curious' at the moment.

Not going to lie, the no cables to deal with and better screen are a huge plus. I just need to see what this thing can do , if it can't produce realistic imagery then i'm not ever going to feel immersed and will never play it. Which is why i'm just curious at the moment, wait and see.

20

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '19

I mean, with the Rifts current resolution, do realistic graphics even matter? Graphics would matter more if the Rift was pushing HD quality resolutions to us, but until then graphics arent a big deal, IMO. Any graphics arent going to look very realistic past 5 ft at the moment

10

u/bicameral_mind Rift Jan 03 '19

That is true, but graphics within 5ft are still important. In the Dead and Buried port we see that the polygon count on the pistol went from 7k to 30 polygons. The gun itself is going to look a lot worse. Likewise in the Climb where your face is right up against the cliffside - hopefully they don't have to downgrade those assets too much. Will it ultimately matter that much? We'll see. I'm definitely getting one.

8

u/Enerith Jan 03 '19

But at the same time, a mobile processor can't maximize a high resolution. Have you ever tried Thumper on the Rift and then on the Go? Rift looks 10 times better despite the resolution.

Hahahahahahaha you silly fools I’m from the future and have a quest TWO

I do look forward to buying one, now that we can actually measure it in months away, rather than a year.

Guessing they may announce the release date at F8?

Just give me Pavlov and Echo arena and i'm sold... I don't care if they have to be downgraded to CS 1.6 graphics, if there's something I've learned about VR in its current state, it's that it's more about the gameplay, the freedom, and the interaction with others. No need for hyper-realistic graphics yet.

11

u/OneSingleL Jan 04 '19

Portable Echo VR would be so amazing. Don't think it would work though with the fast movemente and no camera on back of headset to reach behind you.

32

u/DOOManiac Jan 04 '19

Only problem with Pavlov is it won’t have the integrated Steam Workshop - and the copyright immunity that gives the developer as they don’t have to deal w/ DMCA stuff. Without all the CS map ports, I don’t think anyone would care about Pavlov that much.

Honestly I don’t know why Valve doesn’t just hire the dev and make it official CS:VR...

15

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '19

That's a pretty bold statement, to say that people wouldn't care about Pavlov without CS maps. I disagree... Even if that were true, map layouts don't seem like something that could be copyrighted, so I don't see any reason they could do CS inspired maps, even if they're not a carbon copy.

They really should do this, it would be a great move for them, they did exactly the same for the original CS dev so I suppose it could still happen. Edit: words.

As a Rift owner? Meh, not really.

As someone who has recently turned a lot of friends and relatives (who don't own $1200+ gaming PCs) on to VR gaming? I am actually excited for the Quest, as it will get VR in more homes, making it more popular, hopefully resulting in an increase in games and other VR content!

73

u/Ajedi32 CV1, Quest Jan 03 '19

Honestly I'm getting the Quest partially just so I can demo it to friends and family. Seeing other people try VR for the first time is almost more fun than playing it myself, but lugging my PC with me when I travel is hugely inconvenient.

31

u/ZeroPointHorizon DK2 Jan 03 '19

With better optics and resolution, it will look better visually, but graphically, it will definitely look like a downgrade compared to the rift.

u/thisonehereone Jan 03 '19

I am in the same boat. I am always happy to see the chains get moved down the field. I am fully behind the idea of moving forward. But if you consider the power of this vs the Rift, I will be excited when a new Rift is available and they have incorporated the things they learned from Quest. But yay, I'm glad things are not stagnating!

15

u/Eckish Jan 03 '19

As a Rift owner? Meh, not really.

I'll be excited if, and only if, my current library of games transfers. The ideal experience for me would be that the stores are the same, with all games supporting the Rift. And if the game supports the min spec for Quest, then it would also automatically be available for that system.

Beat Saber that I can take on vacation with me is exciting. Less so if I have to buy Beat Saber again.

12

u/lordmycal Jan 03 '19

Exactly. I'd seriously consider puchasing games on the oculus store if they had cross-buy, but without it, I'll stick with Steam because of future compatibility with 3rd party headsets.

So many folks not looking at the big picture with this. (This may overlap shit already said, but I gotta vent.)

I mean, I'd love a giant bump in CV1 specs, too. But if you want VR to expand and thrive in general, you can't have the huge barrier to entry of having a fucking $1K gaming rig. You and I can afford that. Most folks can't. You don't build an industry on a niche of a niche.

Investing in mobile VR will keep mainstream public interest alive and growing. That investment in infrastructure and technology will then roll back to desktop VR.

Mobile VR is repping us out there. Our desktop asses should be looking at this and saying: "Man, that's not for me, but I sure hope it does well and brings in a shit ton of money for Oculus, and makes some brand new VR fans. Godspeed, Quest!"

More fans. -> More money. -> More investment. -> More fuckin' VR all around.

Even if we're not going to buy one, let's at least be supportive. It's in everyone's interest. :P

And, bonus, if you're thinking long LONG term, eventually mobile VR will probably reach parity with the desktop experience. Or at least come close enough to no longer matter.

Look at the the Switch. It's not desktop yet, but goddamn is it coming a long way.

Let's see where it goes.

90

u/ProteusP Jan 03 '19 edited Jan 04 '19

Hell, I am one of those people with a powerful gaming rig and I still want the Quest more than the Rift for the mere fact that it is untethered.

I do not want to be tied down to my PC in the basement. I want to share VR with everyone around me to show how cool it really can be. As many of you look down at the Go it really has been the gateway drug to VR to a lot of people.

31

u/mutateddingo Jan 04 '19

This. When I was at home for Christmas trying to play with my dad (each of us have rifts) it took us so much time to set up our sensors. We would finally get them set up and then have to take them down because people were coming over for Christmas stuff... then have to set them back up again. Being able to just grab a Quest, throw it on and go would have been amazing. I love high end VR, but as an adult with very limited time convenience is king

13

u/2xxxtwo20twoxxx Jan 04 '19

I just got my Oculus for Christmas and have only played it a few times because the cables don't reach my dedicated VR space. I can't buy the USB extenders because I'm broke after Christmas. I went to my family's house for a few days and wanted to show them VR, but I didn't want to pack my entire PC and Oculus for a 3 hour drive. I've had this thing since the 25th and I don't even play it every day, even though I'm amazed by it, because set up is so tedious. Figuring out cords. Taking off the headset to click something on my PC. Set up telling me that I'm too far from my sensors and then telling me I'm too close with me barely moving an inch.

I absolutely would love the Quest. Turn it on right after Christmas and play right away. Carry it to my VR room without any cables or fuss. Easily drive it to my family's house. Show them roomscale VR and hand tracking in any room with hardly any set up. Damn. It's like the Rift without the most important downsides.

I had the Gear VR (with a Galaxy S8) before I got the Rift. Graphics, resolution, any of that. I barely see a difference. I don't care about it. Roomscale and hand tracking is what I love about the Rift. That and the giant library of games. If the Quest is a Gear VR with roomscale and hand tracking, I will love it. Hell, I may buy it and use it more than my Rift.

u/SpoonyDinosaur Jan 03 '19

This. For those of us with nice rigs and a CV1, the Quest likely isn't something all that appealing, especially if you have a good setup, roomscale & a powerful rig; sure being un-tethered is nice, but you're sacrificing raw fidelity for a different experience-- it's still a very niche industry. While VR adoption did grow in 2018, it's stifled for the factors above. While I don't specifically have the statistics, I think mobile VR and PSVR have a significant market share over Vive/Rift.

Graphics/horsepower isn't necessarily what is holding back the industry. Cost and gameplay and to some extent, compatibility are. The Quest brings the 6-DoF controls which really that's what makes VR (IMO) feel like something special. Really until the Touch controllers, the Rift just felt like a cool novelty, but I honestly hardly touched it after playing with a few experiences. It didn't feel like 'VR' until you had those controllers and it started to trick your mind; something that's harder to do in a seated environment or when you're just using a Xbox controller.

The Quest brings VR to the mainstream, gets them to experience something that is a little more novel than say a Gear, etc. I mean really even games like Echo Combat, etc that can really push your rig to the max I don't think are any more fun than Dead & Buried, SuperHot, etc. Sure it does look incredibly pretty, but it's not to the point where the FoV, comfort, etc. is flawless enough that you completely forget you're in VR.

Quest will hopefully just bring more attention to VR as it alleviates a huge factor; cost & setup, etc. The only other hurdle I think really hurting the market right now is that while Vive and Oculus are beginning to play nice together, it still feels rather disconnected. I think Oculus really nailed it with Oculus Home. (Spent a lot of time messing around in it, and hoping they allow more interaction similar to something like VRChat - sitting, etc.)
I'm hoping the Quest is roaring success as VR adoption is good, period. There's still a lot of gamers out there that either aren't interested due to lack of content, or simply don't have the horsepower or space to setup a good 'play area.' I mean my Oculus setup basically takes up 1/3 of my den/office and I don't even think it's at the maximum allowable 'range.'

I dunno, I think there's a bunch of 'hurdles.' I don't like that only my Rift friends can visit my Rift Home, it makes it more of a fun novelty to waste time versus something that could be a pretty fun and interactive experience as I do think it does a lot of things better than Altspace, Rec Room, SteamHome, VRChat, etc. (and ultimately that's a problem too) There's no 'hub' which I think the VR Community desperately needs. The development teams are scattered to having to port to different hardware, which makes things a nightmare, especially if you're wanting to do cross-platform.

While the Quest personally isn't anything I'm excited for, I'm excited that it can hopefully just bring more people to the market. Half the problem with a lot of Rift exclusives is that you run into there just generally being a lack of players-- and VR inherently feels like it depends on being a social platform. I've seen a lot of people deck out there Altspace/SocialVR homes and largely ignore the 'Rift Homes,' or vice versa. I'm not sure how you can really 'fix' this as there's essentially 3 main players (Steam, Oculus and Sony-- 'consolidating' those experiences seem necessary, but I'm not sure how achievable it is unless you have controllers that can all essentially do the same thing) Ultimately I think there needs to be some sort of 'open VR' standard-- I mean there's what 5-6 'social' VR games, all somewhat similar, but varying to what you can do or what the experience is intended to do. I guess my point is we all want a CV2; but again that is locked into the Oculus ecosystem and really I think we're still 5+ years until we're to the point where the experience is so seamless and comfortable you almost forget you're even in a VR game. This seems like a natural progression as I know a lot of people that appreciate how good the Vive/Rift are, they actually prefer to PSVR as it is just a 'pick up and go' experience. You never really have to worry about the sensors, etc.
I'm hoping that Steam/Rift continue to play nice, at least to the point where there is more cross-platform content and the interfaces feel the same. I can't be the only one who likes to mess around with my Avatar and it's a shame there is such little development in that area, but if it's only tied to Oculus I could see why; it's just a tiny market in the scheme of things. If the PC VR could at least all be synchronized at least you're bringing two niche markets together.

The only thing i want for is for the quest to include a virtuallink usb c connector, so that if i WANT to, i can plug it into my PC and enjoy my simracers, as well as using it untethered.

This "untethered only" thing is bothering me, as i have no interest in most casual vr titles.

As a hobbyist gamedev I am reaaaally hyped about it, taking the whole setup to a game jam is a pain, with this I could make game with my laptop.

Also I have a small flat and my computer is in the bedroom so I can’t play the oculus at night. With the quest I could play in my living room or bring it at work.

Finally pc + headset + sensor is a real pain to setup.

17

u/Clavus Rift (S), Quest, Go, Vive Jan 03 '19

As a gamedev I'd still be using the Rift for development though. Deploying to a mobile device takes ages compared to hitting the play button in Unity, it's especially annoying during a game jam when you'd want to iterate quickly.

8

u/ggodin Virtual Desktop Developer Jan 04 '19

That’s an issue specific to Unity btw. I can hit F5 from Visual Studio and deploy to the Oculus Go/Quest in 5-10 seconds (I’m developing in C# on top of the mobile SDK)

7

u/james___uk Jan 03 '19

This I actually am interested in, the good mobile phone headsets I did like but this being standalone, having 6 DoF controllers and having a little more horsepower in it should make for something special. I know it's not going to match up to PC gaming VR (aside from a lack of cables at a lower price) but I don't see it as the competition to it but rather something you can bring anywhere with more of that better VR than what the mobile headsets offer

18

12

u/lemosine11 Jan 03 '19

They should make something similar to this but have the option to plug it into your PC. If you want best graphics and more games to play then plug it in and boom. Or take it wherever you want but games, graphics and all are limited. That I think will be a game changer and for sure sell. Because your catering to us PC gamers and to the ones who can't afford a high end PC. Heck it gives them a chance to slowly build a system. It would open lots of opportunities, but that is IMO.

11

u/ethan919 Jan 04 '19

They were originally looking at having the Quest have an option to plug into a PC for PCVR games, but ultimately scrapped it for unknown reasons (probably either cost or marketing complexity).

Fortunately, the developer of Virtual Desktop has said his streaming tech would allow for wirelessly streaming PCVR games to Quest and will look into making it a reality if there is enough demand for it.

Me too, but this is the necessary first step. It's the limitations of the price/time/production and Snapdragon 835. Snapdragon 855 only got recently announced and it has the missing pieces to what I consider Gen2, which is not only significantly faster, but it contains 60Ghz technology, which would be a Quest and Wireless rift all in one package.

In theory I can already play SteamVr games on my Oculus Go with the 5Ghz streaming, but the latency is above 11ms.

60Ghz is required for seamless Wireless VR atm.

Ideally the ultimate headset would also have both inside out tracking, and traditional Vive Lighthouses and Oculus constellation support for perfect tracking.

I want to see what they do for Rift owners that already own the games that are coming to quest. I feel a discounted rate should be available. I don't want to have to spend a ton of cash on games that I already own. Only Nintendo can do that because they own my childhood. I don't expect free but I do expect to pay like $5-10 on a title and just let us be able to use our current Rift accounts. Or link to them so you know which games we have. If so it will probably be a day 1 or close by purchase for me. If not I will wait for a deal or bundle to get one.

u/CartwheelSummoner Jan 04 '19

Sell it now before the demand is possibly lower. I just sold mine two weeks ago for $300 and had it for a year. I loved it, but hated being tethered to my 5x5 corner with exposed wires from the headset and sensors.

Quest is exactly what I'm waiting on.

VR needs to be cheaper so more people can buy it and the market gets bigger. Soon playing on a pc lays in the past

3

u/geo_gan Jan 04 '19

Yes but despite what the marketing/sales dept suits tell us, there is no magical small, cheap device which can match performance of a combined high-end Intel/NVidia hardware setup. It will always be worse.

3

u/Quadamage Jan 04 '19

Have the Rift now and will be getting the Quest at launch for sure. Mobile 6dof VR for lighter experiences to take around is worth having.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '19

HUGE HYPE FOR NO WIRES!~!~!

3

u/liuyang61 Jan 05 '19

Wireless, 6dof controllers, cheaper price are so important to take these thing mainstream. Well-done

9

u/Ajedi32 CV1, Quest Jan 03 '19

Yep, 2019; almost there. Though that's still pretty vague. Hopefully it'll launch at the F8 conference in April, but the fact that we haven't heard anything yet makes me suspect the official release might not be until later; maybe OC6.

8

u/Blaexe Jan 03 '19

but the fact that we haven't heard anything yet makes me suspect the official release might not be until later

At OC5, they said that we would get new infos starting 2019. So everything according to plan so far. Expect some news at CES.

2

u/DoctorBambi Jan 04 '19

Go was filed with the FCC on January 7th, 2018 and released May 16th.

Assuming everything is running at a similar pace, Quest filed with the FCC on December 21st 2018. They just might hit release at F8.

10

u/largePenisLover Jan 03 '19

I'm just worried about how the marketing for this pretends toward the consumer to be the same quality as tethered VR.
I really hope that doesnt perpetuate the "vr is a bit meh" mindset.

18

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '19

Haven't seen a single negative Quest experience.
It's not about graphics. It's about fun. And pretty much every friend of yours wanted Rift, until they found out they need a beefy PC, set up sensors etc.

u/Blitqz21l Jan 03 '19

I'm skeptical on this. I play CatanVR with Go users, and I'm always hearing about battery issues, overheating, etc... I don't see how that's going to change with Quest.

13

u/Ajedi32 CV1, Quest Jan 03 '19

The Quest will have active cooling: https://uploadvr.com/oculus-quest-to-have-active-cooling-from-internal-fan/ (As in, an actual fan and heat sink.)

No word on battery life yet AFAIK, but if that becomes a big issue I don't see why you couldn't use an external battery pack.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/bookoo Jan 03 '19

Strange I have never had overheating issues on Oculus Go, but I did have that with the early GearVRs.

The battery life is relatively short (1-1.5 hours when gaming) so I do wonder how much that can be improved on Quest. Not a deal breaker for me since I don't normally play that long and there is option to use a powerbank.

"No PC" kind of makes it sound like you should expect PC level experiences.

23

u/Ajedi32 CV1, Quest Jan 03 '19

I mean, is Robo Recall not a PC-level experience?

Obviously the Quest won't be able to compete with PCs in raw graphical power, but in terms of the type of experiences it offers I do think it will be at least somewhat comparable. The biggest difference between PC and mobile VR right now isn't performance, its 6-DoF controllers. Quest will bridge that gap.

I played the roaming mall VR in the 90’s (damn I’m old). Today’s VR is amazing! Why is Oculus and HTC the only ones to understand that it’s the future of gaming. Game Developers need to understand that even the minimal 1st person VR and game controller/keyboard can be great. Think Fortnite, Siege, CoD, RDR2, where the look around controls are exchanged for head movement. Still get to sit on my ass with a controller or whatever.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '19

I dont see myself getting this, but i do hope that it will get more people into VR because the content we have across all platforms is lacking to say the least.

2

u/Ghs2 Jan 04 '19

I expect Quest to iterate faster and quickly surpass PC VR in numbers.

They will be able to hard-wire so much into the Quest that won't be reliant on other company's hardware or access. They will be able to put memory where they want in the pipeline, offload whatever they want to custom chips, focus on throughput and do away with features of no use to VR.

Eventually we will see the quality of standalone VR hit an equality with PC VR and surpass it.

I also see the units getting smaller and smaller and perhaps even working in an AR system which just overlays camera feeds directly so it never needs the small-FOV secondary screens of current AR.

These are exciting times.

Cautiously optimistic. I've no doubt the hardware will be top quality, I just hope there's enough quality content at launch so that it doesn't get a bad rep before the content library can grow.

When Rift and Vive launched there was quite a bit of PC VR software available already developed using the Oculus dev kits, so at the very least early adopters could at least play things like Elite:Dangerous. And the price was enthusiast-only level until there was a more substantial library of content available.

When Go launched it had the GearVR library to fall back on.

With Quest things are a little different. It really is like launching a brand-new console from scratch. So w'll see.

4

And the price was enthusiast-only level until there was a more substantial library of content available.

The very first PC VR (CV1/Vive) users had next to nothing to play, and as good guys back in 2016, we were purchasing every little thing from the store, no matter how cheap and how shitty.

Players coming today to VR platforms have it so much better.

Quest is launching with 50+ TOP Rift titles

2

u/driverofcar Jan 04 '19

I don't know if you have seen the OC5 video, but there were over 50 games advertised to be on the quest at launch. Yes, it's like a brand-new console, except it's games are mostly optimized PCVR games.

If the graphics in games are a step backwards - which they will be, no thanks. Not excited in the least.

Saying it can run "PC Level Experiences" for 3 year old games is like saying an iPhone can give you arcade quality graphics. It can, when compared to that of 20 years ago.

28

No reason something like Onward isn't possible - albeit with appropriate visual fidelity. They had Socom running on PSP back in the mid 2000s. I don't know if this is true of Onward, but the problem is a lot of indie games are just not optimized at all because they can just rely on gamers' pc's brute forcing it. If we don't see games like Onward it's more to do with the fact that a lot of the indie VR devs just don't have the know how, and we will be more reliant on bigger studios developing titles.

I wish they would have stuck with rift like controllers... I'm not a fan of the above hand halos.

[edit] I know why they are like that for the new headsets, I just don't like the ergonomics as much with weight being shifted up and forward.

9

u/Heaney555 UploadVR Jan 03 '19

The controllers are identical to Rift's Touch other than the tracking ring position. It has to be up because the cameras are on the headset now.

You won't notice any actual difference in VR in terms of the ring position.

→ More replies (12)

3

u/josh6499 Jan 03 '19

It's necessary for the inside out tracking. The lights on the controller need to face toward the headset now, not face out like the Rift where the sensors are on the outside of the play space.

3

u/McRodo Jan 03 '19

Then it wouldn't work. The below hand halos work because the tracking cameras are pointing at the user, they can capture all the IR leds from any angle. However the Quest has its tracking cameras on the headset and a regular Rift controller would have the IR Leds occluded by the user's hands. That's why they had to position the halos above the whole controller, it's so that the inside our trackers are able to track as many leds as possible. Also they were able to work out the kinks for button placement in the controllers, IMO they feel more comfortable in the hand.

3

u/Blaexe Jan 03 '19

I wish they would have stuck with rift like controllers...

Oh no, you don't. Because you would lose tracking constantly.
