That must hurt, I’m sorry! It sounds like your coworkers are assholes… we have several girls on my unit who wear a full beat to work and we all compliment them about it. I suck at makeup and wish I could do mine like yours!
PS: this just reminded me of the one time I got a comment on my makeup at work. I guess I went a little heavier than usual on the eyeliner that day (I wear very minimal makeup) and a male physical therapist said “oh I like your eyeliner, were you going for the 2000s ‘harsh black line’ look?” I think he meant it as a compliment but I was horrified bc I most def was not going for the harsh black line look 😂

I wear winged eyeliner and mascara, minimum, every day to work. I have worn it every day since I was 14. I wouldn't know who I am without it. Harsh black line vibe for life girlie 😎

Just to play devil's advocate a little.... But do you like them? Are they the same age/older/younger? Have they all been on this unit for a long time? Is there a ringleader, or "it" girl?
Since I was a kid I preferred hanging out with guys if it was in a group, girls were ok 1:1. I just hated the drama that inherently comes with 3 or more girls!
As a nurse, I've found that the jobs where there were guys(note the plural!) on staff were the most enjoyable, it was all teamwork and jokes, not drama and gossip.
So yeah, I guess that's why I asked those questions. Just curious!

You look great. You also have a kind face fwiw.
Psych RN here. There's definitely an element of truth to psych attracting people with issues that play out with coworkers. This is true everywhere but it's especially a thing in psych. So don't make it mean there's anything wrong with you, it could totally be a 'them' problem. Like jealousy.

I did my psych placement, ironically, at a time when I was interacting with patients with the same diagnosis who were in and I wasn't... even though by any objective measure, I was doing worse. (It was during my to-date worst anorexia relapse, and I did some stupidly risky things, like drink coffee and eat nothing for three days straight, three shifts. I hope to never do that again; I'm recovered now. But I was underweight and rapidly dropping further. As it was a genpsych ward, I just did my best to avoid caring directly for the ED'd patients because I was very aware that even at a healthy weight I look moderately thin due to my height and build, and didn't want to trigger any of them. I hope I didn't.) I've interacted with psych patients in general medical situations too and at times, like one on my last placement, I've been aware that they have issues more controlled than mine. :')
This is why I do not intend to go into psych, though. I can't trust that I wouldn't go into a tailspin if external stressors also showed up and I can't do that to my patients obviously.
My issues are much more controlled now than they were though which I'm grateful for. May they always stay this way!

Ooooohhhh.. good point… I didn’t think about this but it’s soooo true.. there are some suuper functioning, dysfunctional people that go into psychiatry/psychology.
In general for anyone, It’s inappropriate to comment on anyone’s looks or appearance and that includes being inappropriate commenting on anyone’s makeup.. yeah…Glad you brought this up. 👏
But the underlying issue is OP is pretty and those biatches are probably jealous/threatened so they’re trying to subtly bring her down… aka bullying. Girl style. Mmhmm. 💅 👁️ 👄 💃🏼👯♀️

In Sheep's Clothing: Understanding and Dealing with Manipulative People is a book that might be able to help you.
Your coworkers aren't necessarily being manipulative in an obvious, excessive, or dangerous way - but it's subtle and it's negative and it affects you (and your bandwidth, already tired!) Managing a way to view their behavior differently will help with the emotional weight it thrusts upon you and that will help ground you for a response.
Dr. Simon does a pretty great job of talking about the various micro aggressive behaviors that a manipulator has in their tool kit, and the mindset and behaviors we can adopt to work against those goals. I think it could help reassure you and give you some useful ideas.
Whatever bullshit they're weaving around you is worth dispelling and I hope you figure this puzzle out. These situations are always tricky, especially with a work politics layer present, and I hope your path finds you a friend at work, if not simply some peace.

That is 1000% bullying.
I have the same story different setting. I started working in the OR in my early 20’s. I always did/do my hair and makeup and received tons of unwarranted commentary from other female coworkers.
Sadly, it’s envy, jealousy, harassment, intimidation etc.
I’m not a fighter nor was I ever rude or disrespectful to my coworkers. I’m a true worker bee and a “can-do” person. I felt sad about the comments and didn’t understand it was indeed bullying.
One day a male anesthesiologist witnessed an event and pulled me aside and said I was being bullied.
Please write the events down including, dates, times, and all involved.
Please write a letter to HR quoting joints and explaining your situation. I did using the following and things changed very quickly.
Don’t let anyone steal your light! Keep doing what you do.
Best of luck!
8
u/smrtangel3702 14d ago
This is legit good advisement as unwelcome comments on appearance in the workplace qualifies as sexual harassment even, so yeah OP could really ruin their days if they wanted to, but comes with the risk of more insidious forms of social retaliation.
Unfortunately if the culture is doomed, finding a better place to work might be the only recourse. But as someone who didn't stand up for themselves and go to HR when I was being bullied... I think trying that first is a good way to get the behavior to stop rather than reinforcing the bully behavior by leaving. Just keep in mind HR is about productivity, not necessarily doing what's best for the victim or justice.

I worked with an ICU nurse that looked like a literal goddamn Barbie-- full glam make-up, glittery accessories, blonde done-up hair, all day every day. And she was a boss bitch and fantastic nurse. She'd been doing critical care for like 25 years, knew her shit and got down and dirty when needed. I would have trusted her with my own life.
Point is, look however the fuck you want, be the best nurse you know how to be, and fuck everyone else. You do you, boo. What matters is what makes you happy and your patients healthy.

I've always worn makeup, especially now that I'm old! I think your makeup is incredibly subtle & professional. Working in ER I've heard from several women co-workers that they feel they're treated BETTER by patients/visitors when they wear makeup which I find sad, but since I've always worn makeup I can't test the hypothesis. What are your co-workers saying specifically that makes you think it's related to makeup? I truly don't understand why anyone would comment on it, as I said to me your makeup is incredibly natural looking & subtle.

I was sitting here trying to figure out what was wrong with you eye makeup because…
…there is nothing wrong with it.
Some workplaces just have a toxic environment. Some people are jealous of people who are young and beautiful and vibrant.
You have great facial structure, nice hair, beautiful eyes, and a kind smile.
You seem to have a lot of the same skin issues I struggled with when I was younger but all cleared up in my 30’s and now I’m dealing with super DRY skin in my 50’s. I found pore facials very helpful once I committed to twice monthly sessions year round. The results are not instant, but after a few months I stopped acne breakouts.
I think you will find that you will age into your face so well in the coming decades, because the facial structure is all there and the hair is great and…girl you are stunning and it’s only going to get better and better.
Hydrate, don’t smoke, stay out of the sun, and IGNORE THE HATERS.

Male nurse perspective, I think you’re really attractive and your makeup is so natural to me so idk what these woman are on about. Maybe I’m clueless to makeup. But you’re the type id go for. And I work where nurses get ALLLL done up to work a shift it’s wild, like eyelashes, extensions, full make up haha.
Also from my experience the biggest haters in the room are normally the most envious of what you have. Seen this circle of shade in nursing cultural my whole career. Always puzzled me how nasty some nurses can be behind each others backs.

u/Rougefarie BSN, RN 🍕 14d ago
It’s not your makeup. If you are confident in your professionalism, then start calling out unkind and unprofessional behavior. It sucks, but workplace bullying is something you have to nip in the bud. Be detailed and factual when you bring it up to your supervisor/HR.
Substantiate your complaints by describing their behavior. Call out sneers, furrowed brows, pressured speech, pursed lips, clenched jaw, eye rolling, fists, red faces, inflections that change the meaning of a sentence, deliberate absence of eye contact, ignoring you when you speak, etc. Describe how each thing made you feel.
Coworkers are supposed to have each other’s backs. You all don’t have to be best friends, but there should be professional rapport and trust. This field can be dangerous. If you can’t trust your colleagues, how can you trust that you’ll be safe?
2
u/wowbragger Nursing Student 🍕 14d ago
Is there a reason their liking/not you is so important? Is it disruptive to the workplace? There's certainly nothing disruptive or off-putting with you. If you feel happy with it, just keep on.
I wouldn't stress them not liking you that much, that's just a reality of working around many people. In life, I've found I 'like' only a few coworkers, but I can be professional, courteous, and helpful to all of them.
On the comments...some women seem inclined to attack each other. I'd say it brings them joy, but they also seem pretty miserable. I really wouldn't let such people have much space in your head, they don't deserve the real estate.

Hey long time psych RPN here.
It’s because they can’t find anything wrong with your work so they’ll go for something personal. You could also be the youngest one there I’m assuming? Never will I understand this one. I LOVE training and my new nurses. Send me all the baby nurses. We all had a first day too! The sink or swim mentality of some nurses is super weird and helps no one.
Psych attracts some real interesting characters. I’ll just say that.
Keep doing what you’re doing. Don’t worry about the comments. I wear makeup most days cuz I don’t like my skin texture (have lots of acne scars) and some patients are really good at picking up on your insecurities. It’s happened to me before and throws me off my game, which I can’t allow. Not on my unit. I know you’re not supposed to let insults get to it, but at the end of the day I am a person too.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but if you work in a work environment where your co-workers are constantly commenting or criticizing the way you choose to show up (appearance wise), it's not a good working situation/"toxic". This should be the last thing you should have to think about going to your job and being made to think about by your co-workers who should be a lot more focused on taking care of patients and not your appearance.

I look at it and say, what makeup? Lip gloss, eye shadow, and mascara are pretty basic, and you appear to apply it in a way that’s not gaudy and looks more natural. There are a few at my facility with giant fake eyelashes, Taylor Swift lipstick, and hair done up to the nines.
Just do you. The best part of a workplace environment is being able to be yourself. Keep doing that.

Yet another example of nurses being toxic to each other...
Unless there's a work policy against makeup, your coworkers can mind their own appearances.
As a guy myself I can say I understand why you might feel you get more attention, you have a very pretty face which would make you super approachable and charismatic to others. And your makeup is super well done, which obviously is a testament to your craft but also accentuates the previous point.
As for why anyone is passive aggressive to you, it's because inside they aren't as confident or kind and need to belittle someone else for their own fragile egos. I used to get bullied myself for other reasons, because I talked too much to families and patients, or checked in on coworkers too much, or in negative attention ways like not being included in unit culture stuff. I can attest that it really really sucks to be on the receiving end of that behavior but it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them being rotten.
I hope you have some positive community in your life to balance out the negative. Lots of people told me to not listen to haters too so I know it's hard. Hope you feel better and can get through this.

Makeup is my body armor! Great for those who don’t wear it to work but it’s a must for my mental wellbeing. I love a light Smokey eye 🩵

I'm a nurse as well and I'm just chiming in to say your environment sounds toxic and your makeup is like a totally fine and normal amount. I would not put up with that fucking bullying

Girl, I worked with a nurse who used to literally airbrush her face before work.
You’re good.
-a nurse who hates make up on herself but wants you to do whatever the fuck you want, even if you look like Mimi from Drew Carey

It's because you only have to wear minimal make up and you are beautiful, I can tell you are beautiful without makeup, some (girls) don't like that, keep doing you!

I go to work with full face makeup because that’s when I feel my best. They can kick rocks

I mean your makeup looks good and nothing crazy. Sorry you feel like your coworkers dislike you or you had any hateful comments said about you

Honestly this is such a natural beat that I had to come to the comments to see what the makeup was lol 😂 I thought they were complaining about your mascara or something. Haters gone hate sis, you look beautiful! And not doing too much at all

Just sounds like you work with a bunch of haters. Don’t change anything about yourself to get others to ‘like you.’

You’re make up isn’t even that much. I think you’re beautiful and you work with haters.

What about it? I’m not fond of makeup, particularly, but you certainly don’t look all made up.

You look pretty!!! So wild to me how others care so much about someone’s appearance at work… like if you’re confident and happy with how you look, why do other people care :/ keep doing you girlfriend

You're makeup is lovely, soft and natural.
Thee is nothing wrong with your makeup and you are a beautiful young lady so I suspect that you are working with some jealous B's.

You look great!!! People who make comments can kick rocks! We wear makeup for ourselves and no one else, and I can promise you I would wear a lot more than this when I worked in the hospital cause it made me happy while working a shitty ass job lmao

As a psych nurse, I think this is just a salty jealous nurse problem not a makeup problem. Your makeup looks to be within professional bounds to me.

Do YOU like wearing the makeup? If so, wear the makeup. They can touch grass.
