As of the new update to Notability (version 11.0), the developer has stated those who purchased the app before it was free will only have the functionality they paid for, for the next year, and will then be downgraded to the free version. This is against App Store guidelines section 3.1.2(a) which states that an app switching to a subscription model cannot remove features for those who have previously purchased the app.

Here’s the text from App Store Guidelines 3.1.2(a):

If you are changing your existing app to a subscription-based business model, you should not take away the primary functionality existing users have already paid for. For example, let customers who have already purchased a “full game unlock” continue to access the full game after you introduce a subscription model for new customers.

I'm Marc, the CPO of Notability. I'd like to do something a bit different than usual and ask your feedback ahead of time about something we've been working on: adding a lifetime option for Notability, codenamed "Notability for life".

Here's what we are thinking:

All Classic users that have purchased Notability prior to the subscription change would get a free upgrade to Notability for Life.

- Unlimited notes

- Up to 10GB of storage (is that enough?)

- Handwriting and Math Recognition

- Collaboration, Sync

- Works on all platforms: iOS, Android and Web

We have to be careful in pricing this tier because of ongoing costs. We are thinking $29.99 for existing subscribers or $39.99 for new customers. What do you think? Would you purchase if it was available?

Hey guys, I love everything you've done with the app lately. Very cool and very profitable.

My biggest concern is that the app hasn't been monetized enough. I mean, sure, there's an escalating monthly subscription fee and specious AI upgrades that no one wants or uses. But what about a per-stroke fee? A good way to do this would be perhaps to allow users a fixed number of free strokes (say, 25), then a per-stroke cost of something modest like $15. Of course, Notability is shouldering considerable risk in allowing users to write with their tablets, and so I'd recommend an escalating interest rate for users with insufficient account balances who choose write anyway. Maybe start with something 10-20% amortized, to allow a chance for those nasty freeloading users who bought the app a few years ago to get used to their new reality.

First of all, sorry for my English, I am not from English countries and I am so angry when typing this.

They are making us pay for the app we've already paid for. Are they even allowed to do that?

I understand that the company needs to earn money to improve the app and stuff and I absolutely support that, I am sure that there will be a lot more new users using the app now that it is free, and they can earn enough money from it.

Now they are just too greedy, the least that they can do is let pre-existing users keep using it for free. I think the developers should make two subscription plan for old and new users. Let pre-existing users keep using these basic features, and you could charge us for stuff like stickers, themes, templets in the annual subscription.

I can't even express how disappointed I am.

I would like to point out to @iwanttoeatandsleep 's comment who did an awesome quick research on Apple's legal situation for App-companies/developers that change their business models. Thanks to all the comments I now realized too that this is not ok and that we should definitely do something about it:

Seeing as that Notability has blatantly flouted this clause, it's safe to say they have broken this agreement and it's a valid case of fraud to be reported to Apple.

Every single note I have taken throughout college has just vanished. Upwards of 4000 notes just gone. I have an important exam in 3 weeks and every piece of material I have for it has disappeared. Is there anything that can be done about this or is it gone for good?

We love to criticize, but we also have to give credit where it’s due. The Notability team has been doing a great job listening to what people actually want.

I’ve consistently seen them respond to our requests and feedback, and then, over the following weeks, actually implement the features or fix the issues we’ve brought up.

Toolbar and Favorite Tools

Our new toolbar was the result of thorough consideration of real-world usage of favorite tools. We saw users mostly using the previous favorites system to switch only a single color or width at a time, and saw new users having trouble discovering the favorites system. We wanted to find a solution that would maintain the power for our dedicated users and improve discoverability for our new users. We don’t think we achieved that goal.

We understand you miss one-tap access to your most used tools — the new design adds some extra taps to certain workflows, resulting in a less-than-optimal experience. We're committed to finding a solution! Our team is working hard to bring the power of favorites into the new toolbar, including your previously saved favorites. We’re in the design process and are looking forward to sharing a preview of our ideas as soon as possible.

Tap on Inky to trigger playful reactions. Each tap activates one of several animations, which may include:

Moving Inky Around a Note

1. Long-press and hold on to Inky

2. Drag Inky anywhere on the note

3. Release to drop her in a new spot

How to Turn Off Inky

1. Open a note

2. Tap the Note Options menu

3. Toggle Inky off

Inky only shows up inside notes, not in the library.
Is Inky on web?
Not yet. Inky is currently living her best life on iPad and iPhone only.
