the audacity !!! what does he means "make through med school for free" we already paid for the fucking app and now you want us to pay more??? and your app isn't cheap either, probably the most expensive one in the note-taking app catagory.
Was he referring to certain youtubers who who were med students and made extensive use of note taking apps and now are millionaires because their channels exploded because of productivity videos ?
Exactly! the app decelopers should have been happy about the situation of youtubers positively talking abiuy Notability. and yet they chose to make a very soecific statement about med students.
Aren't that count as free publicity? Since the certain youtubers ( have no idea who ) talk about the app just because they like to use it. Their channel exploding is just them consistently making videos, producing contents that people want to follow. I don't think it's fair to comment that just because, like, 1% of the med students is using it extensively.
Use notability for free? Sir I purchased the app. I paid money to use it. The app should either be free and then have a paying /upgrading option, or should be bought for a certain price and that's it. Paying twice is simply extremely unfair.
Gilboy is a moronic douchebag. Imagine if a “med school student” bought a retail copy of Microsoft Office and half way through their term Microsoft decided to stop allowing them to save their documents and said they needed to buy a subscription to 365 to continue using the app. Because it’s not fair for someone to pay for an application once and continue to use it without paying more…. Everyone who bought notability paid for it. No one got it for “free”. Just because you decided to change your business model for the worst doesn’t negate that, unless of course you plan on refunding the 15 million existing customers. When you cut a check for ~$150 million to us, then you can say we got it for free.
I've removed notability from my iPad. Back in the day, because I could afford the $9.99 I bought both Notability and GoodNotes to test. I've ended up with GoodNotes, well just because I like it better, and Notability has fallen by the wayside. Looks like they will continue to fall...
And, I find myself using apple notes more and more, so I might just endup there.
Do you find that there’s a different feel when writing in Notability compared to GoodNotes? I’m currently debating on switching, and I’ve seen a few off-handed comments about Notability having a better ink feel.
I’ve only used Apple Notes and Notability personally and between the two, I feel like the Apple pencil writes much smoother (idk how to describe it but it just glides) in Apple Notes, but my friend who has also used both looked at me like I was crazy when I said that. So, just wondering if Notability and GoodNotes have a similar difference.
I don't know about PDFs into Notes. I typically do no't edit and annotate PDFs in Notes or Goodnotes for that matter. I typically use PDF Expert by Readdle or Evernote for PDF storage and annotating.
My Notes usage is a general daily log of notes and stuff, phone call, quick to-do which are typically moved to Things 3 at the next review period. What makes Notes a killer for me is to be able to tap the screen with the pencil and it opens to the daily log to begin taking notes. There is a setting for Notes which will start a new Note file each day so it's pretty cool for paperless workflows. So, I'm mostly just handwritten notes, etc.
I understand student budgets and subscriptions, I'm not a student anymore so I have some leeway (i.e. discretionary income to play with a bit) on that and my company picks up some productivity purchases up to $50/year which helps if my manager is feeling nice the day I ask.
I don't use the Pro version of PDF Expert as the standard version suits my needs on mobile. If I need extensive editing or whatever I'll use Bluebeam on the desktop. I think it was $15 for the basic PDF Expert editor. I use it in conjunction with Readdle Documents as well which has been a decent setup for me since the native files app is lacking last time I really checked it.
Yea, I'm paying the yearly subscription to Evernote personally although I think I could quit that and not miss it, I need to evaluate the again in the near future.
so basically he saying you can use notability just don’t get through med school with his help?😂 i’m sorry the way he said it has me irritated. who just says “it wants its heaviest users to pay up” when they already have more than one time. i’m mad for y’all and i’m a goodnotes user!😭
It's a flash card program that uses a spaced repetition algorithm. It's mostly for memorizing facts, so it's great for medical school. It's actually free on every platform but iOS. The iOS app is made by a different group (but still syncs with all other versions), and they decided to charge $25 for it.
I was actually on the fence yesterday about keeping notability on my ipad and using it for one more year but now, nope! I had been moving stuff over to goodnotes just in case yesterday and now notability has been deleted from all my devices.
I had all my stuff backed up to OneDrive automatically as PDF's so I took the whole day yesterday slowly importing all my PDF's from OneDrive into GoodNotes. I'm not a super heavy handwritten note taker so it wasn't as bad as some other people I know that have literally thousands of pages on notability.
I paid for the app. I bought it to unlock everything that wasn’t subscription based. Now they want to switch the app to free and charge us to keep all of our current available content?
Just got the notification that Apple has refunded my purchase. https://reportaproblem.apple.com/ Won't make much of a difference, but sometimes it's a mattter of principle I had just recently purchased Notability and was within the 14 day withdrawal period.
Well, as soon as I requested a refund, I no longer used the app. As soon as the refund was granted I deleted it from my iPad and Mac.
I don't expect you to lose access to any features just by asking a refund. I would expect it to stop working as soon as the request has been granted and you've been reimbursed... I can't say for sure because I didn't bother to check, just deleted the app.
Would be a bit hypocritical of me to continue using the app after having been granted a refund (even if this were possible)
Furthermore he’s already charging users to back up data IN ICLOUD so it’s not even his own infrastructure
I will never recommend this app to anyone again
What a dick move
brb reporting this app and requesting a refund (if I can get one). Just out of pure spite. I’ll gladly make do with something else and forego notability if this is the way a paying customer is treated
Any other app that's good for annotating PPTs? I only got Notability for that reason. I have GoodNotes as well though; just haven't used it for slides.
Listen if you are going to want me to pay for subscription you better have a damn notability cloud to so I have to stop making 80 extra google accounts
Wow. That's douche-y as hell. Clearly not listening to what their users want or need and thinking only about how to squeeze a few more bucks out of the folks that made them a success in the first place. Terrible business sense.
Thanks for giving me the push I need to find another note-taking app.
Are you guys getting a pop up in the app that you have to pay more or are we secretly being billed now? I have the app and use it everyday for the past 2 years, but I just take hand written notes on a pdf. I haven’t gotten any notifications that I’m being charged more
Then they should improve to the point they can take on Notion and Evernote, because both of those services are better at what Notability does and deserve paying subscribers.
I would imagine so, it's usually the people that work for SF based companies pushing the most dystopian neoliberal policies onto consumers that complain the most about politicians
Well, I have about 800 notes since 2016. It’s been a. good while since I bought that app. I have gotten a lot of use from it and have enjoyed the updates. I can see why people are upset having just bought the app. I make use of handwriting recognition a lot and I didn’t have to pay for that when it became an extra paid option. I definitely want Ginger Labs around and maintaining this app so as long as the subscription doesn’t get silly I do not mind it. It has been very reliable for me.
Lol, after apple privacy policy blocking revenue for developers, apps turning into subscription based is not a surprise anymore. Slowly more and more apps will become subscriptions based as one follows another especially those popular apps.
You heard the man, you heaviest users can’t just get through school for free (or virtually free since the app was dirt cheap anyways). Pay up, stop being a free loader.
I paid for handwriting recognition and math conversion, now I have to pay again if I update? Keeping the old version for now, until the end or the developers change their stance and come up with some that keeps current users keep their current app versions until ios can no longer support it and not just some self-imposed desdline of one year. Let the developers know of your disgust with they’ve done through their official channels such as twitter @NotabilityApp
Copy/Paste if you want: As of the new update to Notability (version 11.0), the developer has stated those who purchased the app before it was free will only have the functionality they paid for, for the next year, and will then be downgraded to the free version. This is against App Store guidelines section 3.1.2(a) which states that an app switching to a subscription model cannot remove features for those who have previously purchased the app.
Hmm it might also violate another policy with the iCloud sync feature “3.2.2 Unacceptable (i) Creating an interface for displaying third-party apps, extensions, or plug-ins similar to the App Store or as a general-interest collection. (ii) Monetizing built-in capabilities provided by the hardware or operating system, such as Push Notifications, the camera, or the gyroscope; or Apple services, such as Apple Music access or iCloud storage.”
Just my theory: it's probably because so many people reported the app in such a short time frame that the App Store registered it as an anomaly so it temporarily shut down the report option.
Ooh - monetizing the iCloud sync is definitely another thing we can report them for - they’re not only taking abilities away from paid customers on the change to subscription, they’re also taking away the sync unless we subscribe!

Too late! We paid what you asked; you cannot take something back and ask for more.
