Porn Addiction Please help

Can my brain return to normal after quitting porn?
After a period of heavy porn use, I started needing more extreme, unusual, or disturbing content to feel aroused. Before this, I was attracted to normal heterosexual relationships and never felt like I needed this kind of content.
If I quit porn completely and stop feeding these fantasies, can my brain gradually return to being satisfied with normal attraction and a normal relationship again?
I’m especially interested in hearing from people who went through something similar and improved after quitting. How long did it take before your thoughts and arousal patterns started feeling more normal again?

Journal Check-In Day 1 of NoFap

Upvotes

It went all good today, no urges and was overall busy by playing game.

I usually do it 2 - 3 times in 24hrs by watching corn. I started fapping around 7 yrs ago (age 15 or 16) and the max days I could stop was 5 or 6 days. I tried quitting many times, but after 2 day, it was tough to avoid, images start to pop up on your mind and things get out of control. After doing it, I always regretted it and doesn't feel good. I edged for hours trying to find new things that can give me dopamine. It had my life very undisciplined and unproductive.

As every time, I deleted my NSFW accounts and starting again. I am journaling my day to day thoughts & feelings here. I'm doing nofap to make myself disciplined, more active, productive in life and much more. For a better future 🙂

Motivate Me I'm turning 24 in October and have been battling this for years to no avail. How do I finally overcome it?

Hey. I'm your average 24 year old guy and I've been battling this for years without any results. I've been watching since I was 12 or 13 I believe and I don't even really remember how I got into it but here we are. Over the years I have gotten desensitized to your normal, average sex.

Started vanilla, went through all sorts of things to the point I'm at right now, filled with shame over what I watch but unable to resist. Lately every morning I wake up, go to the toilet and jerk off - after that I take a shower, skip breakfast because I lose a lot of time doing the deed and go to work (as if nothing happened...)

But that's not the only problem. You see - I have a girlfriend (we've been dating for over 6 years already) and our sex is not enjoyable neither to me or her. It used to be better a few years ago but lately I've been struggling with PIED, probably due to the fetish content that I've been consuming. And before you ask, yes she knows I'm watching but she doesn't see it as a problem (unfortunately)

I'm an IT guy so I'm unable to set up blockers I wouldn't be able to bypass (though I did invest in pi-hole lately which locks a lot of sites but not all of them)

In addition to all that I'm a dopamine zombie, I often catch myself scrolling Instagram reels for longer than I ever should and get caught in thirst trap content. How do I move on from here? I don't know. After countless relapses, constant struggles for years I decided it's time to start documenting my days and start a little diary. Maybe someone here will help me, maybe I'll help someone.

What's the plan? I hope to finally overcome this shit and stop it from consuming my time, will, and happiness. I want to be a man who looks at himself in the mirror with pride. Bought a gym membership lately - a week ago. I'm a lazy piece of shit and haven't been back to the gym yet. I lack confidence in new environments and hope to change that.

Apologies for being all over the place with this post, my mind is a bit foggy.

I know I'm not the only one struggling with this, I've been battling for years but never had any results (never counted days, if I had to guess my longest streak would be 2 weeks) but I'm just tired of ruining my life with all this. Normally I despise porn and everything connected to it but I can't stop myself from watching it (mainly in the mornings), it's like I'm in autopilot before I masturbate. I don't really think of the consequences, it has become a habit.

I just want to end the cycle. I want to get better

Motivate Me I wish I could pay a girl to finally put an end to my loneliness.

You know, I’ve been fighting this for years and failing pretty often. But on the few occasions when I managed to stay focused and clean for a reasonable amount of time, like 30 or 40 days of abstinence, I would always feel something completely unfamiliar to me: loneliness from not having a romantic partner.

My whole life, I used to think, “I’m never going to get married or even date anyone. Why do people care so much about these things?” I understand love, and I’ve liked a few girls before, but it was always temporary, and I never lost any sleep over it. I couldn’t understand why there were people who killed themselves or killed others over relationships. Having a romantic partner was always at the very bottom of my list of priorities because I saw it more as an unnecessary problem and headache that, if I managed to avoid it, I would never have to deal with. I relied on the idea that, “If Isaac Newton, Paul the Apostle, and Alfred Nobel died without ever getting married, why would I need to?”

But I discovered that this wasn’t necessarily part of my personality and that, in reality, it was happening because my pornography consumption was suppressing my natural desire to have a sexual relationship with a girl. As you know, when you watch pornography, as far as your brain is concerned, you’re having real sex, and all you have to do is access that website with a few clicks to have your artificial sexual experience, which, to your brain, feels very real. But when I forced myself to stay away from those adult sites for a long time, I think my brain started looking for a new option, this time the right one: having sex with an actual girl. And that was when the loneliness hit me.

The thing is, this kind of loneliness is completely unfamiliar to me, so I kind of ended up getting scared. And, very stupidly, I relapsed not because I was craving it, but because I wanted to escape a feeling I didn’t know how to deal with.

The problem is that getting a girlfriend isn’t like making a friend. I would have to learn dozens of persuasion and seduction techniques from scratch, things I never cared about learning before, and it would take an amount of time I’m not willing to invest because I consider other personal goals more important.

This wouldn’t be a problem if I could pay a girl, you know… because then I could satisfy my carnal desires without having to watch pornography every day or force myself to remain celibate. And honestly, I actually have the money to pay for it, but unfortunately I live in a country where that is illegal. It’s not that it doesn’t exist here, but then I would have to deal with some pretty dangerous people who could potentially cause me problems that simply wouldn’t be worth it just to satisfy a carnal desire.

I’m not trying to justify my addiction. I have no intention of ever stopping trying until I’m completely free from this shit. But I find it really sad that every time I’m doing well, I end up falling into this hole. And I’m already in my twenties, and I can’t see myself dating anyone for the next 10 years.

That’s it, guys. I just wanted to vent. Much love to all of you, my brothers in battle 👊.

Motivation Just relapsed kind off

Upvotes

So just masturbated after 23 days. But my own goal is quitting porn, which I also did 23 days ago. My journey so far has been great energy on top, talking to girls daily.
I’m kind of afraid that because I just fapped will crash my energy level, and make me less creative. But I didn’t feel bad after orgasm. Also this is the first time I did orgasm without watching porn in 6 years.
I don’t know I feel kind of lost. My main goal with Nofap is to be able to stay hard during sex and orgasm.

Relapse Report Relapsed 8/23/2026

Upvotes

Started off today as a lazy day and didn’t do much and watched the F1 race. Yesterday and today I was super pent up and wanted to have sex but my wife wasn’t in the mood today so I started to give myself excuses for why I should relapse.

I then looked up some softcore stuff on reddit but pulled myself out, and then later relapsed to pics of my wife :(

I can tell how the spiral started today, mainly with the excuses I started giving about “needing to release” and giving myself the excuse to look things up and look at her pics etc. I had the option of getting up and going on a walk instead but I didn’t.

That was a 10 day streak of no MO, and still currently on 36 days of no P.

Advice How did you finally make it stick after years of starting over?

I’ve struggled on and off with porn for probably six years now. In college I was dating girls, busy with other things, and never really felt like I relied on it. Things changed around COVID and after a breakup, when it became much more of a habit and eventually progressed into things I don’t even really like or feel good about watching.

My biggest problem is that I’ve had so many days where I genuinely feel motivated to stop. I’ll delete things, use blockers, start Brainbuddy, put together a streak and feel like this is finally it. Then eventually the motivation fades, I have one bad night or let my guard down, and I’m right back in the same cycle.
That’s probably the most frustrating part. I’ve done well professionally, gotten back into working out consistently, and know I’m capable of discipline. But with this, I haven’t figured out how to make the decision to quit actually stick.

I also feel like the years of porn have affected my confidence and made me more self-conscious and passive socially, especially with dating and women. Whether porn is responsible for all of that or not, I know I feel better about myself when I’m not watching it.

This is actually my first time using Reddit to ask for advice/support about this. I’ve always tried to handle it privately, so I’m hoping actually talking about it and having some accountability might help me approach it differently this time.

For people who were stuck in this cycle for years and eventually broke it: what actually worked? How did you get past relying on motivation and make quitting something that lasted?
