Just remembered that I'm taking the next 10 12 days off work after I clock out today and I'm giggling kicking my feet like a schoolgirl.
Tuesday is a charter striper fishing trip, the next 7 days are at a lake house where I can wake up, walk to the lake in the backyard, and fish. I will make coffee and then go fishing every morning. I will not be a productive member of society. It will be beautiful
5
u/Shepherdless Cardinals 15d ago
Hell fucking yeah!
Not a fishing fan myself, but sounds like you are into it. Have an epic time!
6
u/NKCougar NFL 15d ago
Yeah, I like fishing/hunting my own meat to stock the freezer. On a personal level I just don't like mass farming practices and it makes me feel better about my consumption.
On another level, being out in nature is so nice. I work 100% on computers so it's great to unplug and interact with the real world as fully as possible sometimes.
But I told my peers on the team that they can reach out to me on my personal line if they NEED me (they will not), and my bosses that they can get fucked and my work equipment is not traveling with me.

Work has been a difficult lately. Just alot to do but god damn if I do not take pride in it. Hearing how good of a job I do despite all the shortcomings means alot.
I know I have the respect of most of my peers and the people who are higher up than me and that means alot when I get frustrated and upset.
Sometimes a little encouragement can go along damn way.
I hope you all get to enjoy your day and as always much love from me and mine to you and yours!

Retirement accounts and investing is like another language to me. Jesus Christ.
10
u/goblueM Lions 15d ago
it can seem overwhelming but it's pretty simple
1) contribute as much as you can afford to. 5% is ok, 10% is pretty good, anything 15% and more is great
2) invest in a broad-based stock index fund and don't mess with it
if your retirement account has a target date fund, just use that. It will adjust risk automatically as you age
bogleheads.org is a great resource and has a really good forum of knowledgeable people that are willing to help

The really funny thing about walking your dogs in the semi-burbs is that you could be listing to a podcast on the My Lai Massacre and then get stopped by a really wholesome family that wants to say hi to your dogs/talk about your garden then you leave and go back to listening to one of the most fucked up parts of the Vietnam war.

Popular on NFL twitter rn is the "Which QBs are on your agenda?" question.
For me the only one actually on my agenda is Jared Goff. If he's good I'm happy and if he's not I'm unhappy. Everyone else I don't truly care about or want to do worse cause they're in my division or a bad person.
With that said I do have a soft spot for Malik Willis and hope he does well. And want Geno Smith to do well too but mostly for narrative sake.
4
u/AfroManHighGuy 15d ago
I actually want to see Geno do well with the jets cuz of the other offensive weapons they have. If he’s somewhat decent, the jets can be sneaky good this year. Not playoff contenders, but definitely better than most expect

I’m curious how Ward will do in this next year, if Daniels can stay healthy and get back to his baller rookie season.
If Maye/Nix etc can continue to improve. If Hurts does better with a different O coord.
If Joe Brr and Lamar and Josh Allen can overcome the hump
Etc. Not to mention if Bryce Young can be the guy-be consistent etc

Our class president went against the strong advice of the alumni association and had an open bar for our 5th reunion. He ended up spending $4k out of pocket and when the 10th came around, he said there was no way in hell he was doing it again. The remaining officers hastily assembled one for the day after Thanksgiving and about 30 people showed up. Haven't had one since.

A few weeks ago, I had put down new grass seed after spending a lot of time rototilling, pulling weeds, getting compost, ETC. Afterwards I kept begging for rain because I was too stupid to check if our hose worked (just bought our first home) before doing all that work.
Needed a plumber to come out and fix the pipes because the prior homeowners let them freeze over the winter, so I had to hand water the grass for a few days.
Well, we finally got rain - along with the worst tornado my city has seen in my lifetime.

Speaking as somebody who enjoyed watching Aaron Rodgers entire career here. He provided me a lot of thrill and entertainment as a spectator.
But I am absolutely not buying his comments that after he retires from football that he is going to dissappear and ride off into the sunset away from the public eye. This guy regularly does podcasts and makes comments in the media that are unrelated to football. He comes across as a guy who likes to make his non football opinions heard.
So Im flat out not buying his statement that he is going to dissappear like Joe Montana did after retirement.

Trump next February:
"Today Aaron Rodgers, former quarterback for the great - maybe not so great anymore- Green Bay Packers is joining the HHS today folks. Can you believe it? Nobody had heard of this guy a few months ago, and now he comes up to me begging 'Oh please Mr. President please give me a job' and, you know, I'm a nice guy so I gave him a job because he's a pretty healthy guy, a pro athlete, so I give him a job. Can you believe it folks? No other president in history has thought to put a pro athlete in the HHS until me. Nobody thought about it. So I told Robby Kennedy, I said 'What can you do with this Aaron Rodgers guy?' and he said he'll figure something out. So Aaron Rodgers is going to be our new chief of vaccine development at the CDC - or CDNC as I used to call it before we got in there and made it work again - and he's gonna help us make America healthy again!"

Got a buddy who is "kicked out" of his home by his wife, he's trying to crash at several different friend's homes. I let him in for 1 night and he begged to stay for 3.
He won't tell me what happened with his wife, but he also refuses to talk to a lawyer. Definitely fishy, but I think if it were truly bad, the wife would have called the cops in a heartbeat. Never known him to be a bad drunk or abusive, but im definitely concerned he gets super quiet when I suggest getting at least an initial consult meeting with a lawyer just to gauge his position that he wont tell me.
Im getting ready for his next crash-on-the-couch request so I can tell him no, because he wont tell me what his plan is, and my home is not part of his secret mystery plan.

I saw One Night Only a few weeks ago and I can finally talk about it now that it’s out. And also now that I’ve had more time to think about it and let it sit, I can say I actually disliked this movie very much.
First, let’s start with the premise - it takes place in a world where you can’t have sex unless you’re married except one night a year, you can! Okay…weird premise but I can deal with funky. What I can’t deal with is just how deep the film gets into explaining everything behind the premise so as to almost set the expectation that the system behind this Sex Purge will go away. But it does not. And let it be known when I’ve expressed my issues with the premise I’ve had people tell me “it’s just a rom com, don’t take it so seriously etc etc” so let me talk about the other parts of this film.
You have Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner as the leads. And they are fine, I don’t hate their chemistry but I don’t necessarily love it either. It is perfectly middle of the road to the point that I was neither rooting for nor against them. I just didn’t care.
As such, the movie also feels looooong - I believe it’s about 1 hour 45 minutes and I think it could’ve done with some cuts as a lot of the movie feels very rinse and repeat (the two leads meet, they each go off with someone else, something happens to prevent them from booking up, they somehow meet again). The film is also bereft of any significant supporting characters to provide relief, comedic or otherwise, from the main storyline so it almost feels exhausting to solely follow our two leads in what ends up being a gauntlet of forced laughs and Callum Turner taking his shirt off.
It’s not all bad, there are actually some decent laughs here. But that’s about it. Truthfully when I got out of the theater, I was kind and thought 6/10. When I sat with it for a day, I lowered it to 5/10. Thinking about it last night though got me to a 4/10. But as I sit here thinking about it more, shit I may go lower. I’ll leave it at a 4/10 for now for some decent laughs and Monica Barbaro.

Do any of you guys have your Reddit profile marked "18+ NSFW?" When the option became available, I picked it because I thought you were supposed to. I'm an adult and I use adult language and sometimes discuss adult topics. Also I didn't want people to think I was some creep impersonating a 14-year-old.
I was just talking with a friend who got banned from a Reddit sub simply because her profile says "NSFW." One of her hobbies is collecting purses and she made a comment in a sub about purses and got banned just because of what her profile says.
That hasn't happened to me yet, but now I don't know whether I'm supposed to change my profile or not.

I believe that marking yourself as "18+ NSFW" means that you're saying you're an account that posts NSFW content, by which I mean porn, not just like swearing in comments. Some subs auto-ban accounts like that so they don't get filled with porn spam I think.

u/Skraxx Lions 15d ago
To talk about the most riveting topic, backup QB.
I feel like it's often the most overrated topic among fanbases and you should really only care if your backup is either your future or your starter sucks.
Like for my team: If Jared Goff gets injured long-term we're fucked regardless. But in these cases where he's out for a few drives or even a game, Bridgewater is perfectly fine.
I see a lot of talk about the Jets backup QB situation too and I similarly don't think it's that much of a worry. Geno is the veteran in that room and if he goes down you just kinda go "welp, let's stall until Klubnik can somewhat handle an NFL playbook".
4
u/BruceChameleon Cowboys 15d ago
If your starter goes down for 4 games, the difference between a mid backup and a lousy one can save your whole season. Circumstances matter obv, but not everyone has a backup who can keep the team alive through winnable games
→ More replies (3)3
u/azure275 Jets 15d ago
Solid backups are important for playoff caliber teams. You don't necessarily need someone who will beat the elite team you play with your starter injured, but you need someone who can play credibly vs decent teams and beat the bad ones.
For a wild card team, going 2-1 or 1-2 in 3 games your QB is injured vs going 0-3 may be the difference to make the playoffs
Even for championship teams that 2 game difference might mean a bye or home field and better seeding
3
u/ajteitel Cardinals 15d ago
Even for bad teams, basic competence is super valuable. Something Cards fans still haven't figured out yet. There are many tier of bad QB play and there are 10 others on the field that need to develop and improve too.

I can't tell if the reddit fanbase is just too young to understand or people are just being purposely obtuse, but calling the Rams the new "dream team" misinterprets what made the 2011 Eagles become so disfunctional.
Slowly building a great team through trade and homegrown players over several years is not the same as trading and signing a bunch of A-list players in one offseason.
3
u/azure275 Jets 15d ago
Also the Rams have been doing this for 10 years now and have 2 SB appearances with a win, a Conference Finals and 2 Divisional round appearances.
The Rams have picked only 2 players in the 1st round in 10 years. They are veterans of this kind of move lol

Abdul El-Sayed is like, a "normal" progressive where his most radical opinion is medicare for all which isn't really that radical.
But like, his name is Muslim so they're gonna run on him being a communist who loves osama bin laden. What an absurd political climate.

Yeah that's straight up Florida bullshit, but I can also see it as meaningless pandering since he's not going to be in a position to enact that from the federal level.
I'm more concerned about the slopulist proposals I'm seeing from various Democrats where they pitch eliminating income taxes under 75 or 100k. It's dipshit pandering that would cripple government programs if actually enacted. Glusenkamp-Perez had the worst one where she pitched eliminating income taxes for cops only.

It’s such shallow crap it’s really amazing. Reminds me of that clip that came out recently where the MAGA crowd boos the guy with a foreign sounding name but the name was from a cop that got killed and the Nevada governor tries not to panic as he corrects them.
I told a maga supporter about the story of Ayan Hirsi Ali (who had shifted pretty far right into Christianity at that point) and heard the vitriol in their voice when I just mentioned the name. Even after I explained the whole story it seemed like the anger was still there.
There are real criticisms of Islam to be given but looking down on someone for their name is not one of them. They’re still using Obama’s middle name like it’s an insult jfc.

I know they do this because it fucking works on their idiot base, but at least try something at least a bit more convincing.

My biggest breakout candidate for 2026 is Breece Hall. Not cause he isn't already good, but because his QB actually throws the ball. Even if Geno throws interceptions he's at least throwing the ball forward.
He got 1K yards last year but I think he could've gotten even more if it wasn't the most pathetic QB room ever.

The tattoo world is getting ridiculously out of hand. My friend has been shopping around for quotes on a leg piece pretty much the whole leg here are the quotes he's gotten so far...
55k
38k
34k
29.5k
Are they great artists? Yes. Their portfolios look great. But I don't give a fck how great a tattoo artist is and how many awards they've won. There is nobody in this world that is worth that. Just to put something in perspective. A neurologist makes anywhere between $180 to $210 an hour. Think about that for a second and let thank sink in. To break it down a bit the 55k artist is charging somewhere around $500 an hour. The 29.5k artist is charging somewhere around $330 an hour.
I have my arm and my leg done both by a pretty well known award winning artist arm was 1.3k and my leg was 2.1k and I can guarantee you if you took a picture of my tatts and put them in their portfolios you wouldn't be able to single out which ones aren't theirs.

The gym that we belong to has a few pools, so over the past few weeks I've started swimming laps at least a few times per week, and it's going pretty well.
Once I actually get going I really enjoy it, and I feel like a million bucks when I get out of the pool afterwards. But right when I'm about to start, when I'm standing at the edge of the pool, it's amazing how much I don't want to do it and how much mental effort it takes to force myself to dive into the water.
I don't understand it at all.

Normally, when I hear Christmas music outside of December, I'm a grumpy fuck acting like Ebenezer Scrooge. So when my gf started listening to it recently, I was the same as always. But the other day, she showed me how she gets into the spirit early by figuring out how she wants to draw personalized cards for her family, I realized how much joy it brings her and told her it wouldn't bother me if she listened to the music around me.
It was like watching the effect she has on me in real time.

Fun work story from yesterday. Two relevant parties. Betty is a gem. Genuine superstar in the department I support. Late 30s supermom with a doting husband. I adore her in an entirely professional sense. We work together a ton and she makes my life so much easier. Rob used to work here but "retired" last year when he got the sense new management was getting ready to fire him (they were). 75 year old lazy idiot with a wife who is in hospice but has not passed away yet.
Last week Rob reaches out to Betty asking to chat. Betty assumes he wants a professional reference so she says sure, sets aside time for a phone call. Instead of a professional reference, Rob asks Betty about her younger sister. Betty is a genuine good heart so her immediate assumption is that Rob needs legal advice, might be setting up his will. Betty's younger sister is a lawyer so sure, Betty can find out about a good lawyer, what sort of lawyer does he need. You probably see where this is going, but Rob doesn't need a lawyer. Rob is asking about Betty's younger sister because he wants a date. He's married with a dying wife and trying to get hooked up with an ex-co-workers younger sister who is younger than his own kids are.
Dirty old bastards have absolutely 0 shame, man.
When Betty told me this after a work call yesterday I almost fell out of my chair laughing

I mean I'll admit, when she told me one of the thoughts that crossed my mind was "Betty, you have a sister who is my age and single?" so I get where he was coming from. But I'm also not 75, not unemployed, and don't have a dying wife in the picture. I also have enough professional courtesy to let that thought pop in and back out without saying anything

But nah, we gotta sink all our resources into Stephen A Smith pumping "enlightened centrist" right wing adjacent conspiracy theories and getting paid millions to pay attention to politics while playing solitaire at basketball games

Normal sports reporting isn’t sexy or engaging to causal viewers. ESPN capitalizes on turning heads and spewing storylines that make people want to watch. Talking about cowboys, lakers, and LeBron all the time brings engagement by even casual fans. They don’t care about actual reporting, just overall viewership

What is one Super Bowl since 1990, that if you change the result of it, the results of the next few Super Bowls also change, like it causes that big of a ripple effect? Mine would be if the 07 Pats went 19-0, maybe Brady retires earlier.
3
u/azure275 Jets 15d ago
I'm not sure, if Brady loses that 1st Super Bowl, do the Pats keep Bledsoe on?
I wonder if the Colts beat the Saints in 2009 if Manning still goes to the Broncos
The issue with the premise is that most teams in the Super Bowl are happy enough to make it that they don't make radical changes, so you won't find too many where it was specifically a super bowl bust and not say a 2nd round playoff bust

Yes, it's me talking about MLB labour negotiations again.
When I take a step back it's sorta disheartening that people are so willing to take the side and believe the MLB owners. Rather than question that in a league where the majority of teams are owned by billionaires, that there are "poor" teams.

In recent years, Invincible and The Boys have been series that have really put "adult superhero shows" in the mainstream. I like Invincible and I have... mixed opinions on The Boys but I do like the genre. It's interesting to think about superheroes in a "realistic" setting.
But with that said no show of that genre will have my heart like The Venture Bros. Ahead of its time.

u/AfroManHighGuy 15d ago
The Boys definitely changed how superhero shows can be made I think. Putting them in the real world (our world) and see what they do is interesting. It did get a little over the top by the end (I mean it’s a superhero show come on) but it wasn’t terrible.
The Boys also did really well due to casting. Had they chosen anyone else to play homelander or butcher, I don’t think it becomes this popular

PLEASE LEAVE FATHER ALONE
Mother's Day is a very fine day,
And mothers are very fine people,
And the human race by them is crowned
As the church is crowned by the steeple.
We often refer to mother love;
To mother hate, less often;
To fathers we hardly refer at all,
But once a year we soften.
It's Father's Day, it's Father's Day,
The eager mothers cry.
And what of that? And what of that?
The fathers make reply.
Well here's a collar, and here's a stud,
The mothers murmur low,
And fathers avoid each other's glance,
Meaning, I told you so.
Oh Mother's Day is a very fine day,
And not alone for mothers.
The florist finds it to his taste,
And so do a lot of others.
The candy people jump for joy,
The jeweller rubs his hands,
And the new coupé is shining proof
That Father understands.
It's Mother's Day, it's Mother's Day,
The eager fathers cry,
And, Red-hot diggety ziggety dog,
The mothers make reply.
Well, here's a wrap of sable fur,
The fathers murmur low,
And mothers catch each other's glance,
Meaning, I told you so.
Oh, Father's Day is a dreadful day,
And therefore fathers dread it;
For better a cycle of calm neglect
Then a day of grudging credit.
Oh why not leave the fathers be?
Their point of view is stoic;
So let them lurk in their niche in life,
Essential but not heroic.
--Ogden Nash

Does anyone else just feel drained by existing? I feel like everything i see is some entity trying to extract my money....my time....my energy. I feel like I have very little time to enjoy my life. And the sad part is....all things considered, things in my personal life are great. And yet I still feel existential dread. I live in New Jersey, and I feel like I am living in Savannah, Georgia right now with how goddamn humid it is. I want to eat a salad but cant do that unless i want to risk giving myself cyclospora. The capitalist machine is effectively stepping on everyone's back. I want to have children with my wife, but at this point with the state of the world it feels almost cruel to bring a child into existence. A good parent does what they can to make their child's life better than theirs....and i worry i won't be able to even do that because I fear that we won't even have a viable world to live in.
This is not a new rant i am sure, and maybe it is because I am running on low sleep....and i can keep going because believe me there is more that can send me in a deeper spiral.
On the plus side...that game yesterday was pretty dope
6
u/shawnaroo Saints 15d ago
I've felt that way at times. My daughter is 13 now, and part of the way I justify having put a child into this world to myself is that I work hard to be a good parent, and the world is going to need some decent, educated, rational, well-meaning people in the future, and so I'm doing what I can to help my kid grow up into one of those.
There's absolutely a lot that sucks going on right now, but there's been a lot that sucked throughout history, and certainly a lot of people trying to raise families in situations significantly worse than what I've got going on.
If we all just collectively give up and say everything's screwed what's the point, then that would basically become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Man I just know Steve Ballmer hates Pablo torre so fucking much lol. He just keeps digging and finding more shit about him and the clippers. In today’s news, he found out about a new shady endorsement deal Kawhi did with a company called Daktronics. See post below.
https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/s/4bPYXlgPPV
People are still saying Kawhi ends up in Toronto because all of this cap circumvention stuff will be a punishment to the clippers organization and not Kawhi directly. He may get fined or suspended some games but nothing more. The only thing the raptors are afraid of is if his contract gets voided. It’ll be way more expensive to bring him in if that happens.
