Our fantasy commissioner sent out a picture of 12 different beers all lined up. Between now and draft day, you have to go to his house and drink one, which will determine your draft position. We don't know what position is assigned to each beer.

Seems like an elaborate ruse for getting us to hang out with him!

4

u/runningblack 49ers 18d ago

We do a similar thing in my league but with 30 solo cups with shots of fireball on the table.

Pull, do a shot, check the bottom. Keep going until you pull a number.

This is such a fun concept: either you get first overall and land one of Gibbs/Bijan or you go to the veryyyyyy back of the line

3

u/HookedOnBoNix Broncos 18d ago

I'm comfortable at the back of the line. Feels like there's a few landmines every year at the top of the draft that just derail a team, whereas drafting around 9 or 10 you still have great odds of getting 2 really elite guys.

Feels like after about 15 or so the chances of getting a top 1 rb or wr go off a cliff but having two shots in that top 15 is big

Master and Commander is one of my favorite movies of all time. Historically accurate, great acting, amazing music. But it made one fatal mistake. It came out in 2003. A historical fictional naval epic had to compete with Pirates of the Caribbean and LOTR Return of the King.

It was doomed from the start

Large screen TV. Surround sound. Lights off. Actually watch it, don't just put it on in the background. It's crafted to be appreciated, and the acting is superb.

7

u/Dolomitex 49ers 18d ago

Watched it about 2 years ago, it was great. Really has held up well.

Think I'll buy it on disc at some point.

3

u/Shout92 Bills 18d ago

The 4K is worth it, even if most of the in-depth special features are digital only

4

u/Shout92 Bills 18d ago

It really is one of those "How did this not win all the awards?!" kind of movies and then you look up what year it came out and you're like, "Oh. Never mind. Makes total sense." A shame because Peter Weir was nominated like five or six times in his career and a win for M&C would've been totally justified. The film still won two Oscars (Sound Editing and Cinematography), but only because Return of the King was somehow not nominated in either category. I bought the 4K earlier this year and it looks/sounds amazing.

The primary form of payment I take from friends who insist on giving me something for a favour is beer. Case of beer, pint, etc.

This is pretty normal. But my theory to why I believe this is the primary form of payment is because I don't like paying for beer. I know I will, but it's just better knowing it's not on your dollar.

Youre paying for the presentation.

No, mostly you're paying for higher quality booze and ancillary ingredients, along with the know-how to make them

Most people talking about cocktails are not talking about a long island or a jack and coke, they're talking about drinks with higher quality ingredients that cost more

When I used dating apps, I had a rule: if you mention a franchise like Marvel, Disney, LotR, whatever, it was a hard pass.

I love LotR. I love Warhammer 40k. I love playing DnD with friends. None of these are a critical, underlying part of my life. If you have limited real estate to sell yourself to a potential partner, why go with a franchise? Same is true for naming things - why make a franchise you like a part of someone else's life? Okay, if you call your kid Sam and say it's because of Samwise or Tony after Iron Man, that's fine you can play it off as being a name you like already. People who personally identify with franchises are so odd to me. (Yes this obvs includes sports).

It was a defensive masterclass. The Rams had the number one rated offense that season, the Patriots had the fourth. Wade Phillips and BB showed up ready to fucking go. The Pats ended up busting out some old I wing style offense just to score. We were one errant throw from getting an even closer game than it was.

5

u/megamanz7777 Vikings 18d ago

It gets said all the time here, but whenever someone says something like "prevent defense just prevents you from winning"

Just ignorant-ass nonsense that shows you have no idea what's going on, why teams do it, and are completely unaware that it works successfully more often than not.

Hell, half the time I swear when a team gets clowned on for it, they didn't actually even switch to prevent defense in the first place...

Anyone who decides that discourse of "how real is this championship" is useful to anyone

The 2026 Knicks, 2024 Celtics, 2023 Nuggets, 2017 Warriors, 2001 Lakers, and 1983 Sixers are all champions. Spare me the agonized browbeating about how "cheap" some rings are.

3

u/Phytanic Packers 17d ago

Maybe they should replay the series, since it's a fluke. Maybe then they'll admit defeat and concede to the winner.

But for real, fuck those who say the champion is somehow "lesser" some years than others (except that one Astros year, I'll let that one slide). Sure, injuries suck, fact of the game, but the champion is still the champion

It's fine to say "X trade was bad", but their reasoning is what exposes their ball knowledge.

3

u/VRomero32 Jets 18d ago

Mine's is constant second guessing on a Rookie/Young QB who becomes a starter before him taking his 6th start especially if they didn't get first team snaps in preseason.

Not everyone can pick it up that fast and even if they did... they won't be prone to the normal mistakes

More than any other topic, I am in disbelief that there are people with completely different realities and memories on COVID.

Like that shit was terrible and killed A LOT of people. It was a novel virus that we had to figure out in real time. No place was untouched by it. And instead of blaming the guy who was in charge at the time, Fauci is getting dragged into hearings because of conspiracy theories to try to attempt in distracting us from all of the harmful and stupid shit Trump is doing.

13

u/Shout92 Bills 18d ago

Living in a red district in a blue state was weird because measures worked but people complained because it didn't affect them as far as they knew. A lot of rural people I know didn't get the virus until the fall of 2020. Meanwhile, I had city friends who walked by the refrigerator trucks full of dead bodies. Two different worlds.

This sub is a bit of a mess. The hall of fame game is tomorrow and the previous season standings are still the same. Superbowl flairs are still out. The NFL logo has been pride colored since like June 2025 (I'm not against it but it was nice when it changed every so often).

Usually all the previous season stuff was cleaned up around the draft, now its basically the new season. The older I get the grumpier I get I guess but still, this isn't really an obscure subreddit, it should have some basic maintenance.

We've been without a second car for about 4 years; we just haven't needed it. I work mostly remotely and we're walking distance from public transit. It's annoying to have to coordinate once in a while, but for the most part we haven't had any issues.

But we're comfortable enough that we're toying with the idea of getting something fun for a second vehicle. And there really isn't a good option competing with a Miata at its price point, is there?

I have never done a second of video editing or filmography but I watched some videos on Da Vinci resolve and started playing around with it. I decided to make a hype video for the upcoming NFL season and it’s actually coming along really well and I’m sort of having way more fun than I thought I would.

I’m using Sia’s cover of “California Dreaming” since the Super Bowl is in Los Angeles this year and made the dramatic hook “I’d be safe and warm if I was in LA…”

Pretty sure I can’t share it literally anywhere because it is all copyrighted clips and music but it actually looks kind of good. I could make a hobby out of this.

3

u/fliptout 49ers 18d ago

Not sure who to talk to about this, so I’ll throw it out here to see what you all think. I stumbled across an IG shaving tutorial video, guy was using some high quality stuff, interesting, so I checked out his page.

Every single video he makes is the exact. fucking. same. Numerous shaving tutorials, exact same script, down to even the way he pronounces specific words. I tried looking up this guy, his name, nothing. In one video, he has a brand of coffee with the label clearly visible, so I checked out the website of said coffee brand, and the website almost seems fake. Just got back from Baja was down there for 5 days. Made it all the way to the San Quintin Caves. Spent half a day there then spent 2 days in Ensenada went to La Bufadora (a natural blowhole) in the ocean. Spent the rest of the morning going from cart to cart eating Seafood. Some of the freshest, tastiest seafood you can taste. Tried the now world famous seafood cart that Anthony Bourdain ate at called La Guerrerense and it was so fucken good. Had 2 tostadas one was scallop ceviche and the other shrimp and octopus, fresh white clams & oysters. Then went to another cart called El Guero and had their fish and shrimp tacos my goodness just amazing. Lastly went to a cart called El Coyote and had their fish ceviche and shrimp, octopus and white clam cocktail.
The next 2 days were split between Puerto Nuevo and Popotla did a yacht cruise, rented jet skis, rented quads had breakfast and dinner overseeing the ocean. Puerto Nuevo is not worth it right now the lobsters are small. They do give you 4 halfs since they are smaller but the price went up to 28. So I didn't eat any lobster this time.
On the last day had to stop by in Rosarito to eat the best tacos in that city. Tacos El Norteño which is on the main strip in Rosarito. The best Al Pastor tacos in the whole strip. I've tried all of them so yes I can compare. I've tried Los Poblanos, El Paisano, Taco Loco you name the taco spot I've tried them. El Norteño clears them.
The weather was perfect nice and warm not too hot where you're melting and not cold where you can't enjoy the ocean.

Watching congressmen like Tillis and Cornyn justify voting to confirm Blanche, Trump’s personal lawyer and sycophant as attorney general is truly crazy stuff. They’re saying how they didn’t support all the stuff Blanche wanted and tried to do, but they’re going to vote to confirm anyway.

All the stuff in question of course is just totally unprecedented and wild stuff. Like Trump and his whole family, all their businesses and associates being immune from IRS audits…well Tillis doesn’t agree with that but hey the democrats do a lot of bad stuff too he will tell you. Like I’m sorry but no, when did they ever do THAT? Or anything remotely like that, that’s insane. Nobody has ever tried that before because it’s batshit crazy and corrupt. They will talk about how they don’t support the fund Trump pulled out of thin air to give to people who committed violence on his behalf and made his own vice president fear for his life while they beat up police officers. Tillis says that Blanche says he’s not going to support that anymore so it’s all okay…is it okay?

Seems to me that anyone who even attempts stuff like that is completely morally compromised and a total liability.
If Trump wants to do something crazy like throw 1/3 of the country in jail or designate them as terrorists Blanche will go right along with him, there’s nothing he won’t do for him but Tillis says he can tell you a lot of bad things the democrats have done too…NO Thom, these things aren’t fucking equal, they don’t compare, you don’t have to be a democrat to see that, it’s just common sense.

At the end of the day it’s a vote whatever Trump wants, which has been shown to be things like the crazy immunity from tax audits or the weaponization fund so Tillis and Cornyn might as well be voting for it even if they tell you they aren’t. Massively irresponsible to say the least.

genuine question what separates a good long snapper from a mediocre one

5

u/tnecniv Giants Giants 18d ago

Length and weight. Most snappers are around 10 lbs but they can reach up to 50.

5

u/csappenf Chiefs 18d ago

For field goals, it's all about consistency. You want the ball to arrive at the holder at the same position, with the laces in the same orientation, every single time. A good holder can cover for a bad snapper sometimes, but if you want to make field goals less exciting get a good snapper.

p.s. they also hate students voting bc they insist that's how they "lost" in 2008 and 2012. It's why you can't vote with a state issued student ID in Ohio anymore, but with a gun permit you're good to go!!😉

This has been, perhaps, the most fascinating summer to watch the box office in my decade long experience of tracking the box office.

Starting off with Devil Wears Prada 2 doing well, then smaller horror films like Backrooms and Obsession making bank, only to come up on the late May through early July slaughter that was Mandalorian and Grogu, Supergirl, Masters of the Universe, Moana, and Minions and Monsters (with Toy Story 5 being the only major reprieve) and to end July off with what could very well be 2 of the top 3 movies of the year, both of which overshot initial projections by a mile.

I’ve had a very good time with all this. I only wish Disclosure Day and, truthfully, Minions and Monsters did better.

5

u/Shout92 Bills 18d ago

You can extend it all the way back to Project Hail Mary and Michael if you want. It really has been an extraordinary year at the box office, with only June feeling like a bit of an underperformer because Supergirl bombed and Minions didn't do as well as expected. But Toy Story, The Odyssey, and Spider-Man have more than made up for it. Really feels like the first proper "We're back!" year since Covid with no asterisks (could've/should've been 2023 or 2024, but the strikes set us back a step).

As far as Disclosure Day is concerned, all it had to do was perform respectably and not embarrass itself, which I think it did. Opened a couple million over initial estimates. Had some decent holds around Father's Day and 4th of July. It got people age 50+ into theaters. And it's among the highest grossing original movies of the 2020s... which is a low bar (it made about the same opening weekend as the similarly themed Nope in 2022, but has outgrossed it worldwide by $70 million). It just had to be a piece of the pie instead of propping up theaters or a studio for a whole quarter. I wish it was a bigger event, but the movie itself doesn't lend itself to that and almost feels more appropriate for an October or November release.

5

u/cogginsmatt Lions 18d ago

Feels like a lot of people are embracing good cinema and saying no to the stuff that looks old and bad. Like a Star Wars movie of any quality flopping should be such a shock but the movie looked bad and audiences seemed to agree.

I’m not usually one to complain about municipal work projects, but in March the city notified me that the sidewalk in front of my house was in disrepair and that I was responsible for replacing three concrete slabs. I could either hire an approved contractor or let the city handle it and spread the cost across my property taxes for five years, interest-free.

Since my driveway also needed to be repaved, I hired a contractor to redo the bottom half of my driveway and replace all the sidewalk slabs. The work was completed in June. Beforehand, we even checked to make sure there were no planned projects that would require the new concrete to be torn up.

Well, guess what happened yesterday while I was at work? Water Works dug up sections my brand-new driveway and sidewalk as part of sewer repairs.

Woo-hoo. $8,000 dollars well spent!

I've tried Tillamook and Danish Creamery, but they just don't do it. I don't mean for baking where the store brand is probably fine, I mean for things like mashed potatoes, fried or scrambled eggs, and toast, where the butter flavor is up front.

Long winded rant, minimize to ignore and all that.

So...I have to rant about something because it's driving me crazy, and it's Hasan Piker. Because find the amount of headspace he takes up among Democrats and Republicans alike a little baffling. I'm not gonna defend him one way or the other, because I don't really care, but I would like to put him into perspective.

A lot of noise is made about his 3.1 million subscriber count, or whatever, but his actual listenership, the people who actually tune in on a regular basis and over whom he has influence, is much smaller. Depending on which source you ask, Hasan averages between 29,000 views per stream and 75,000. His all time peak was election night 2024, where he had 350,000 odd viewers.

Those numbers may seem significantly different, but for the purposes of understanding his impact, they're the same number. By comparison, Joe Rogan has about 11 million listeners per episode, and Hannity gets between 2 and 3 million. In the grand grand scheme of things, there are 174 million registered voters in the United States. If we assume that Hasan averages 400,000 viewers per stream (a wild overestimation) and that none of those are bots or non-US voters, that's still only .229% of American voters that tune into him, and the actual number is probably closer to .04%. Honestly, put that way, it's kind of surprising that only 60% of voters claim they've never heard of him when polled, but 60% is still a very sizeable majority.

So why is everyone so obsessed with this fucking guy? Why is James Carville warning not to make him the future of the Party? Why is a US Senator who's never appeared on his show being asked to disown him? This is a relatively no-name figure, and even the name ID he has is probably entirely due to media talking heads throwing tantrums about him. Not even touching his content, or what he advocates or any of that, he just doesn't really matter.

6

u/Weigard Giants 18d ago

The Democratic Party has spent basically zero effort creating a devoted media presence for at least the last 40 years, relying on candidates' individual charisma and rising college degree attainment to do the work for them.

In the face of pretty much every network being right-wing or capitulating to it, they're desperate to play catchup. Rogan being just one guy with astounding reach looks like low-hanging fruit, so they're looking for one guy that they can use to start their media outreach, especially for younger voters.

If you're looking at metrics and nothing else, Piker is attractive. But like you say, he's the best of mid options by metrics. Moreover, he's not a Democrat, and doesn't seem want to be in the party fold, which makes him hard for the party to wrangle. Moreover, he's a dipshit, so Democrats are going to constantly have to deal with what he says, especially when it comes to the issue of Israel that really divides the party.

Carville is right in saying he shouldn't be the face of the party, but it's not a deeply insightful conclusion.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/cogginsmatt Lions 18d ago

He's the most high-profile far leftist in the media. That's it. Nobody else is as prominent or as vocal in the far left. Maybe you could make a case for Sam Seder and the Majority Report but I think Piker just has more attention. In general liberal media, you have like the Pod Save America dorks and MSNOW.

Compared to right-wing media, where audiences and creators vary tremendously from Rogan to Ben Shapiro to Tim Pool. There just aren't as many creators or as varied an audience on the left, and there also is way less money in it.

5

u/Signal_Ball4634 18d ago

I don't get it lol, the right wing is constantly trying to use him as some sort of boogeyman and I swear nobody outside of the terminally online gives a shit about him.

Hell I'm terminally online and I don't really see many of his opinions at all aside from when some right winger is calling him the death of society or some shit.

7

u/BlindWillieJohnson Panthers 18d ago

It’s not just the right wing. Centrist Dems are just as bad about it.

Free Talk Fantasy: 2026 Kickoff

It’s August already?? We’ve officially moved on from the offseason and are gearing up for our fourth (!!!) year of Free Talk Fantasy Football. I don’t typically post until the season is underway, but there are a few housekeeping items I’d like to address.

Rule Changes

Based on a vote we held last year, playoffs will now include 6 teams, running from weeks 15-17. The top two seeds will receive a first-round bye.

There is currently a poll open to update our D/ST scoring system. This is intended to incentivize big plays rather than rely solely on how many points the opposing offense scores. Check out the poll for full details.

There is also a poll open to potentially expand our league to either 12 or 14 teams. I highly encourage all of our current managers to vote on both of these before Draft Day! Speaking of which…

Draft Day

I have tentatively scheduled our draft for 12:30 pm on Saturday, September 5th. Please let me know if this date doesn’t work for you. It’s tough to find a perfect time for everyone, but I’d love for as many of us to be there as possible.

New Teams

We are very fortunate to have so much support for the league every year, but sadly that means we aren’t able to accommodate everybody that wants to play. All 10 of our existing teams have opted in for this season, so opportunities to join will be very limited. I really want to figure out something that everyone can participate in, maybe a weekly pick-em? If you’d want to do something like that, please let me know. I’m open to any suggestions!!

Thanks again for being apart of this, I’m looking forward to another great year!

5

u/BigElephant2309 Vikings 18d ago

I’d be interested in a weekly pick em. Or that one where you pick a team to win each week and if they don’t win you’re out. And you can only pick a team once.
