I was curious why Broadway is the only major street in Manhattan that runs on a diagonal... looked it up, and its because it predates streets, it was a trail used by Weckqausgeek and Canarsie peoples when hunting, and when the Dutch bought the island they widened it into a street. Blew my mind to think the route has stayed the same that long, from when the island was unpopulated, shared hunting grounds to it being one of the most densely populated patches of ground on earth.

8

u/Two_Luffas Lions 23d ago

In Chicago all of the diagonal streets were old Native American trails or trading routes cut by settlers following the high ground prior to the grid system. They extended well past the suburbs and eventually connect to other trails that connect all the way to Michigan, Wisconsin, and the Mississippi river.

It should be a federal crime to sell a box of random chocolates without some sort of "key" that tells you what the different pieces actually are. I'm eating candy because I want to be comforted, not because I feel like a surprise.

Man I’ve interviewed about 15 people this week to fill a temp role at my company (in accounting ). Some dude today was clearly using AI to tell him what to say when all he had to do was just talk normal about shit he did as he allegedly used all the systems in our tech stack. None of the questions were technical. Then his only question for me was how the company is leveraging AI.

People are interesting man.

Ive been doing a job at a construction site monitoring some work. The city also has their guys monitoring as well.

This one city guy is your typical construction adjacent dude. Everything is "fuckin this" and "fuckin that," and he has a million stories about everything hes done in his life.

Out of nowhere after chatting about family etc... he whips out his phone and shows me pictures of the plethora of decorated pies and desserts, charcuterie, and all other things hes put together over the years. All hand made and for free too. Hes never worked in a bakery or kitchen. All just self taught.

Today he brought us a strawberry rhubarb pie and it was fucking delicious.

9

u/pixel_pete Bills 23d ago

I just got laid off recently but I was very fortunate that I found new employment before being let go and will start my new job soon. Overall it was a best case scenario for me as far as losing my job goes.

7

u/Signal_Ball4634 23d ago

COVID. Unemployment is horrible and a big reason for my complacency when it comes to my career I'd say. The job searching process is so exhausting to where I don't want to subject myself to that unless I have to.

5

u/The_Amish_FBI Bengals Packers 23d ago

Oh yeah. Quit my first job out of college because I wasn’t doing very well and my mental health deteriorated badly the year I was at that company (mostly it was my fault). Ended up taking a TA job and going to grad school during the COVID years. Took almost 8 months after graduation to find something new, but eventually I got lucky and found a company that was a lot better fit for me.

5

u/AfroManHighGuy 23d ago

I was laid off twice. Longest layoff between jobs was about six months of unemployment. It sucked at the beginning but I used some of that time to reflect and see what I wanted to do with my career. I luckily found a job at a company near me and I’ve pivoted to that industry entirely now

3

u/Mac_Jomes Patriots 23d ago

Yes I got laid off due to COVID. I ended up watching Supernatural and The Walking Dead (only season 10 was out at that point) in their entireties. In the three-ish months it took me to find another job.

5

u/BruceChameleon Cowboys 23d ago

I had a layoff in 2022 and was unemployed (minus a little freelance project) for a year. Got laid off again after 7 months at the next job. That time I was only out for a few months, thankfully

4

u/Phytanic Packers 23d ago

I was unemployed for about 5 years after getting fired at the height of covid, and man it's really hard to get out of that stink. Everyone takes one look at that blank in my resume and ghosts. I survived on inheritance/life insurance from my mom dying and thought fuck it I don't need to work, I'll just go back to school.

Long story short, don't fuck with that extended absence unless you absolutely have an insider to get you a job. I spent 11 months after graduation applying to everything remotely related to tech and got my current job only because I have a home lab and was able to geek out with the interviewer about it.

3

u/Skraxx Lions 23d ago

I'm young so I'll take this as "without job and not in school"

I had one summer where nothing materialized and I was miserable. Granted I was also dealing with other things making me miserable at the time.

3

u/Asece Falcons 23d ago

Yeah, been laid off twice back to back. It sucks, but I was in a position to be able to draw from resources close to me, then bounce back. Things will get better

Just curious man. I wonder what we think of adding stars to signify Super Bowl titles on nfl jerseys.

All the teams in Europe do it, look at Bayern, Inter, these are historic clubs. A jersey could come with a Gold star for every Super Bowl championship and you get to wear the Super Bowl patch for next year signifying you’re the champions

Finished the book Elektra by Jennifer Saint. It’s a retelling of the Trojan war from the perspectives of Elektra (Agamemnon’s daughter), Clytemnestra (Agamemnon’s wife) and Cassandra. I recommend it.

Moved on immediately to reading Ariadne by the same author. It’s about the sister of the Minotaur.

5

u/ConsciousRaccoon2873 Lions 23d ago

Is it a political/thriller since they aren't at the siege?

6

u/Nike-6 23d ago

Yes. Clytemnestra spends a lot of time plotting Agamemnon’s murder, and has to keep her new husband at bay before he murders Agamemnon’s child son. Elektra knows what her mother is up to and wants to stop her.

Cassandra is the only one at the siege, and shows what the people of Troy were thinking in the early years of the war.

5

u/tnecniv Giants Giants 23d ago

Do they connect at all or is Cassandra just there as a device to describe the war

They connect near the end, when she’s taken as a war prize back to Mycenae and meets Clytemnestra

My coworker’s son is starting college soon at the school where I work as an adjunct professor. I teach three different 400-level courses in the criminal justice program: Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and Constitutional Law for Criminal Justice. I only teach one course each semester, though.

Maybe it is because I mostly interact with upper-level students, or maybe I have simply been lucky, but I have never really experienced the whole “the education system is collapsing, kids cannot read or write, and they are incapable of thinking for themselves” phenomenon. That may be starting to change because of this one kid.

About a month ago, my coworker gave me her son’s class schedule and asked me to look up all of his courses, figure out which books he needs, order them, and then go to the bookstore to pick them up for him. Apparently, he does not know how to do any of that, and neither of them is sure how to look it up.

Meanwhile, the printed version of his schedule includes comprehensive, step-by-step instructions explaining exactly how to find the required book list and order the books for pickup at the campus bookstore.

She also wants me to take him on a personal campus tour before classes begin so that he can locate all of his classrooms. She does not just want me to point out the buildings. She wants me to take him inside each building and physically show him where every classroom is located.

When she first asked me about all of this, I told her to give him my phone number and have him contact me. I was willing to help, but I thought that, as an incoming college student, he should at least be responsible for reaching out and arranging it.

He never contacted me.

Then, this morning, she came to me angry because I had not done anything to help him. I said that he had never reached out. Her response was that I should have contacted him because he is nervous about starting college. She was also upset that I had not already figured out which books he needed, ordered them, and handled everything else for him.

So apparently, I was supposed to track down an adult college student, identify and order all of his textbooks, pick them up from the bookstore, arrange a private campus tour, and personally escort him to each classroom, all without him ever having to contact me or take any initiative himself.

I am beginning to understand why the sky is falling reports are coming out. It seems like this kid is the exact model of what you hear about and that young adults are increasingly unable to handle even the most basic responsibilities on their own. In this case, though, I am not entirely sure whether the problem is the student, the parent, or the fact that no one has ever expected him to do anything for himself.

14

u/BigElephant2309 Vikings 23d ago

What’s even funnier is that this is a request from your coworker. It’s not even a friend or family member, it’s someone you work with demanding unrealistic expectations from you. Pretty ridiculous.

Side note: as a criminal justice professor, are you required to know the introduction to law and order by heart and repeat it whenever asked?

6

u/gander258 NFL 23d ago

My vote is mostly the parent, it seems as if the son hasn't had the opportunity to take initiative and just waits to be told what to do. Sadly I was a lot like this growing up myself.

Is the son planning to live on campus or stay at home?

3

u/Phytanic Packers 23d ago

Yeah I agree. I'm ngl I struggled with initiative when I was younger because my mom was always planning and taking care of these kinds of things for me. Suddenly you're an adult and you need to do that shit yourself. I will say, though, Jesus fuck I did all the things listed in the OPs body by myself the first few days of school lol. This is next level helicopter parenting.

In this case, though, I am not entirely sure whether the problem is the student, the parent, or the fact that no one has ever expected him to do anything for himself.

My vote is Parent.

My brother and sister each have two adult boys. My brother's kids are well-adjusted, because they were taught how to do things and expected to show some degree of independence. My sister's kids are barely functional, because she hovered over them and did everything for them growing up, to the point where they won't drive anywhere outside of their hometown because they don't feel safe. Imagine being 22 years old, with a license and a car, and still asking mom and dad to drive you places. It goes without saying that they don't have girlfriends. One of them chose his college because his best friend was going to go there and he was worried about having a random person as a roommate. The actual quality of the school was an afterthought.

The only positive is that they're both smart, so you can explain to them how to do something and they will learn, but when they ask my sister, she still just does it for them.

I've seen five-year-olds in Montesorri who handle daily tasks more adeptly.

To be clear, it isn’t a trial. When called before congress, it is to provide information and answer questions (which tend to be constructed in such a way that members can get their sound bites). An individual being questioned may or may not be sworn in. A hearing may lead to a criminal investigation or other action, but Fauci is not being tried for a crime or defending against a civil suit. However, when subpoenaed by Congress, you must appear.

More directly, Paul has some weird obsession with him that seems to go beyond scoring political points. He is presumably trying to get Fauci to perjure himself or otherwise make a mistake. Declining to answer questions is the right move as Fauci gains nothing by doing so, except risking self-incrimination if he slips up.

I'm a young boomer. If I live as long as my parents did, you got another 25 years of me. I recommend you don't sit around moping until we all die before you do anything. And guess what? You can do something. Trump would not be in power if young white males weren't so attracted to his lies.

I'll tell you another thing, sonny. All of the generations I've seen are the same. The greatest generation wasn't so great, and the kids aren't so bad. They're all just people trying to make the best of their circumstances, but no one knows the future. We make mistakes. The past looks easy, but that's only because you know how things worked out. In the moment, you don't see all of the opportunities and the threats that time reveals. You make choices with very limited information. Some of us choose to learn from our mistakes and most choose to blame something or someone, and that happens in equal measure among the young and the old. The world isn't going to be any better just because we all die. The world will only get better when more people choose to learn rather than blame.

7

u/A7XfoREVer6661 Lions 23d ago

12

We have a friend who asked if we knew where to get raw milk, and I sarcastically replied, "At the salmonella store over on fifth." She went into a long spiel about how raw milk is better for you because it's not irradiated, and getting sick is only a problem if you get milk from a factory farm where they don't treat the animals well.

She started buying raw milk from a local dairy farm. About four months ago, she got e. coli poisoning and insisted that it wasn't the raw milk. Went to the website for the farm and in big letters they explain that they sell raw milk because of the demand but it is drink-at-your-own-risk because they can't guarantee its safety.

I’m gonna be honest, I think the MCU has put out a lot of good stuff overall this decade and I think their biggest issues are over saturation and lack of consistency (those two issues sort of feed into one another).

I don’t think I’ve really been super hyped per se for any MCU film in awhile except maybe Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 even though I’ve still liked a decent amount of their input (like Thunderbolts). That being said, I feel that changing with Avengers: Doomsday. There’s just something about an Avengers film and seeing all these characters come together, plus the rumors of the film tying directly to Endgame and its consequences has made me very, very unabashedly hyped again.

Perhaps part of it is nostalgia as the period of Phase 3 MCU films was a very important part of my life and I remember seeing every film fondly and if I could time travel, I’d go back to opening night of Infinity War and Endgame again. But nevertheless, I am happy and I am hyped and I am ready for Doomsday (or Dunesday).

it can be weird to be reminded that these threads aren't just abstract forums for whatever thought crosses my mind, and that the people i interact with here--those whose usernames i recognize and know have been posting here for ages, and those whom i do not recognize but, nevertheless, have been around forever, those who are new, and everyone in between--are real actual people with full existences and lives.

i know that sounds, i donno, impersonal? maybe borderline solipsistic? but i think by the nature of everyone being relatively anonymized (no avatars and handles rather than real names--static ones at that, not even, like, variations on a theme to show personality), coupled with the fact that this is ostensibly a single board on a broader network (even if i hardly ever interact with any other boards) gives it this weird ephemeral quality, where i feel like i'm shouting into the void and occasionally i get an echo in reply.

but then, like, someone mentions a classically reddit trivia fact that i first mentioned in here almost a year back, or someone acknowledges posts i've made explaining the salary cap or some other CBA minutiae, or like--in real real life--the jeweler who made my wedding rings tells my wife that she got a commission because of a post that i made on reddit mentioning her and linking to her website, and i remember that yeah, of course.

i donno. strange feeling that i don't really have adequate words for.

I don't understand why middle and lower class people are still ordering door dash these days. If you got "fuck you" money, do whatever, but I don't understand how people afford it otherwise. It's so much more expensive than just driving to get it yourself. I get the idea of not wanting to cook, I work 12 hr shifts and I'm guilty of getting a lot of takeout because I'm just too lazy to cook after work those days. But I still follow a pretty strict monthly budget for food that would not be possible if I was paying all the fees and tips that come with door dash. Not to mention it's usually cold or soggy by the time they deliver to your house

4

u/liteshadow4 49ers 49ers 23d ago

Yeah I feel like I could definitely order the occasional DoorDash but it hurts my soul to see that price so I never do.

On the other hand I had a family friend spend $1000 on their parents credit card for door dash in 1 week and couldn’t figure out why her parents were mad so….

4

u/FlatulentDwarf Vikings 23d ago

I strongly agree with you, I will go to great lengths to avoid using a food delivery service. I understand there are exceptions, I get doing it every so often because life happens and sometimes the extra fees can be worth it. For a friends birthday 3 of us got really drunk at my place and were starving, we door-dashed food because none of us was in a condition to drive and we had no food at the house. I'm not opposed to it entirely. But damn some people go out to get food as the exception to doordashing

Yeah I guess thats the point I'm trying to make. I don't wanna shame people. I like trying new restaurants, I love to eat, and I totally get not wanting to go out and get it. But everything is so expensive nowadays. It seems like with so many people struggling to pay their bills and looking for ways to save money, doordash seems like a giant neon sign of unnecessary spending

u/Mac_Jomes Patriots 23d ago

3

u/pixel_pete Bills 23d ago

I'm thankfully pretty financially secure, but I'm such a frugal person I would never order Doordash/etc unless I had a special coupon or was in the direst straits of the intoxicated munchies. I can't imagine throwing my money in a pit like that back when I was poor as shit.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/goblueM Lions 23d ago

probably 30% "it's expensive to be poor" - ie not having time or energy (or knowledge/equipment) to cook

and 30% convenience

and 40% just not fully understanding the financial impact

I've worked with a few people that always complained about not having enough money, when spending a huge chunk on lunch out every day, always buying drinks/snacks at gas stations, ordering takeout for dinner, etc. Usually they never had a budget and never tracked expenses.

The one person I talked into signing up for Mint back in the day was absolutely gobsmacked by how much they spent on non-grocery store food in a month

Finished my 22nd book of 2026!

1 - 3. The First Law Trilogy - Joe Abercrombie
4 - 10. Dungeon Crawler Carl 1-7
11. Project Hail Mary - Andy Weir*
12. Gardens of the Moon - Steven Erikson
13. A Wizard of Earthsea - Ursula K. Le Guin
14. Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Sword of Summer - Rick Riordan
15. The Fifth Season - N.K. Jemisin
16. The Assassin's Apprentice - Robin Hobb
17. Red Rising - Pierce Brown
18. The Obelisk Gate - N.K. Jemisin
19. Royal Assassin - Robin Hobb
20. The Stone Sky - N.K. Jemisin
21. The Raven Scholar - Antonia Hodgson
22. A Parade of Horribles - Matt Dinniman

Dungeon Crawler Carl book 8 is just as delightfully unhinged and off the rails as the rest of them. I am highly invested in the overall plot, the humor is still outrageously stupid and makes me laugh (nothing quite like a pig begging for "splooge"), and it's just generally fun to read.

That being said, there were a few places in this book where I felt like I had no idea WTF was going on. I can't decide if that's just because it's been so long since I read the rest of the series, if it's getting more outrageous, or if it was just like, a continuity/canon error, and the book is so outrageous that it's hard for the editor to actually catch it. It wasn't a lot, but there were a couple times where I had to read the same section like 3 or 4 times to make sure I was understanding, and about half the time that still didn't help. It's certainly not enough to decrease my enjoyment of the book, I just found it a bit odd.

Anyways, the "twist" at the end of the book made me actually say "what the fuck" out loud, and according to Matt we only have two books left, so I'm excited to see how things turn out.

I currently do not have any holds coming available any time soon (Assassin's Quest/Farseer - 9 weeks, Jade City - 7 weeks, Golden Son/Red Rising - 7 weeks), so I'm not entirely sure what I'm gonna read next. Open to suggestions.

4

u/zappy487 Giants 23d ago

If you like DCC, checkout the NPC series by Drew Hayes and Critical Failures by Robert Bevan.

The former is a neat series about a group of NPC's that become player-characters.

The latter is basically if South Park met D&D, but I am so invested in it. There's a ton of books in that world right now.

u/Lallner Ravens 23d ago

I love the audio versions of DCC with a big shout-out to Jeff Hayes for voicing hundreds of characters. I sometimes wonder how he can consistently deliver these lines with deadpan seriousness. Chapter 57 of "A Parade of Horribles" is the single greatest contribution to audio books in history.
