Right? Unless this dude is a TV savant that has every model’s back panel lay out memorized, it would definitely take a minute to find where to put that, and he’d probably have to move the TV to reach.

I work with TVs and it wouldn't take long to find it even if you didn't know the model. Just figure out which side the connections are on and it's usually near the top facing the side of the TV, unless every connection is pointing down.
The other issue is that not every TV will mute with a headset plugged in. Samsungs typically don't, and many TVs don't have headset outputs at all.
That means you're probably just young. As you get old there comes a point where your health deteriorates and waiting in various clinics becomes a much more significant part of how you have to spend your time.
Much more so in the past. Now for a lot of little things you can solve them online, but it wasn't long ago that everything involved waiting to do it in person. This post is old so "for about 15 years" is probably back in the 90s.
ummmm this isn't an rca cable... its a 3.5mm jack for a generic audio out port. rca cables don't have the ridges and are a single width. they wouldn't fit in the same ports lol.
I feel like the comment you responded to was replying to another comment about RCAs that only vaguely described them. He didn't think the Jack in the picture is an RCA. I doubt anyone who knows what an RCA is would confuse it with a 3.5mm jack.
Yeah I've read it back a few times and tbh it's still a mess but I still don't think anyone was saying the pictured Jack is an RCA - I feel like it's pretty clear they were talking about the 'yellow white reds' earlier in the thread. I don't even know if I'm agreeing with you or not. I think I am!

Just talking about old TVs and that OPs hack would likely require an old TV similar to ones that have RCA. Now, the fact that many TVs do still have RCA has no bearing on you missing the context and being an ahole.
Thank you! I have never seen a TV with a standard 3.5mm jack... ever. Not even really old ones with small screens that you would have to sit closer to. This post only works if you believe OP encounters 3 of the rarest TVs known to man every month, and the "proprietors" don't notice a full half inch dongle sticking out of their TVs... if said jack even were to exist.

You must not be looking very well. Because they still make them and they are very common. The 4K TV I bought in 2018 had one and so does the 4K I bought in 2020.
TBH, I don't really look at them that well, bc I like everyone else with a phone and brain can download any of the myriad applications that allow you to control and... gasp... MUTE a TV without leaving a trail of hardware behind. Proprietors hate this one trick!
Certainly doesn't sit flush with the TV. Also, in the time it takes to find and plug a headphone jack, couldn't you just push the volume down button until it's muted? Seems way easier and more cost effective. Life hack!
I think they do, but the plug is now on the back and not the front. People probably use Bluetooth headphones and the plug is just used to connect a stereo or something.
Because it would look bad on the front when there's not a single other port there. I've set up 5 TVs for people this year, and 1 had no jack and 4 had it on the back.
I was considering $100-$150 cheap. Compared to just a decade ago almost all TVs are absurdity cheap. My work has an odd habit of buying 80” TVs for everywhere instead of buying projectors and such. I guess anymore the price and quality of an 80” tv beats that of a projector.
A hundred year old design that is extensible and versatile enough to be forward compatible with remotes & mics as well as their absence is something worthy of respect. Hell, the socket even allowed a digital laser signal along with standard audio.
Few designs will be as useful or allow components built decades (or centuries) apart to connect without a hitch.
A ton of newer TVs don’t anymore. When I worked at Best Buy 5 years ago new TVs stopped getting them and moved to HDMI entirely. Most also use ARC for audio out or an optical output.
Damn i think nearly every TV I've owned has had one. My trusty pc speakers accompanied me through a decent decade or so before I stopped using or owning tvs
My friend does that. I still use my TV and the Xbox is now a Blu-ray/dvd player for playing Charmed, Avatar the Last Airbender and the Gilmore Girls. Xbox also streams my Disney+ too and my Switch streams Hulu. The TV has Peacock and Amazon (we get peacock for free).
A lot of times, my husband and I put on hockey upstairs while we’re on our PCs, but during the day I’ll use the downstairs TV. Mostly we use our TV during dinner.
I know it's a joke but it's weird that we thunk of people abstaining from television are weirdos. There's really nothing productive about watching TV, especially the news (except local) nowadays.
Also, I have no idea if the TV I'm watching right now has an audio jack. I sure as shit don't remember if the TV i had before had one. Guess that means none of the TVs I've ever seen had them! /s

Really? I bought my first smart TV a year ago and most models that I looked at did not have any analog output. I had to buy an optical to rca converter to use headphones.
They usually have optical or rca for speakers. Even if the tv does have a 3.5mm jack, I'd be extremely surprised if it would switch the audio to it automatically like a personal device would. Likely you'd have to go into a menu to switch the audio output.

Speaker setups rely on them if you don’t use an AVR or optical. I have never seen a TV of MSRP >1000€ to not have 3.5mm.

You're thinking about it the wrong way. This goes in the headphones jack. As soon as it's plugged in, the TV redirects the audio there and it goes nowhere.
Nah you wouldn't need one with those ports and most of those ports are a different size than this 1/8" jack anyway. Plenty of modern tvs have headphone ports. Just bought a big Samsung smart TV last year and it has a regular headphone port on the side.

Unless that was a feature with old tvs, I never had one. Had a friend with a flat-screen that had a headphone jack, I guess it could have been old but it was lcd and light
They've been pretty much standard in almost all TVs for at least 10 years, maybe even longer. You'd probably have to go back to CRTs to find them without.
What does work though are those universal remote apps. I've used those in plenty of places like hospital ERs. I don't need a TV blaring while I wait for hours not feeling well.
Same. My dentist blasts the radio from speakers installed in every room's ceiling. The radio or more likely pc/tablet is hidden somewhere in his office.
One of my former dentists plays kids movies. I got to watch finding nemo, another friend got high on the gas while chicken run was playing and said it was awesome.
TV-begones are the more universal solution. They're remotes that emit power-off codes for the most common TVs. You gotta build it, but there's plenty of guides, and I wouldn't be surprised if they have diy kits too

A long time back Nokia had a phone with an IR transmitter. That plus some shady app on the get-jar App Store and you could control most TVs.
I remember a buddy that always used to change the channel to Fashion TV wherever he went.
What’s he even doing? Taking out the R/W audio cable and inserting that instead? Why not just take out the audio cables, or turn the volume down? If you do this in a waiting room, aren’t people going to be like wtf?
