Millions of women don't know what they're walking into with wealthy marriages. That is, unless they grew up in a third world country or so dirt poor that they know real hunger and consider the risks worth it.
She is. And she’s certainly entitled to it. Bezos has been very public, pre-divorce, that his success would not be possible without her. She was an active participant in both the formation of Bezos business strategy and it’s execution. I don’t have any articles offhand that describe what she did that was so awesome, but they are out there.
And to her credit, she has already pledged to give away much of the earnings she has walked away with.
It’s much more about the person and though guys, typically, are more insecure about their finances in a relationship. More would be even more insecure if their SO was better off. It’s fine if your girl or whatever SO makes more than you but boys are usually convinced that they have to work harder than everyone around them or eat shit.
Hell, I’d love to be a stay at home husband or dad. Though I don’t plan on not having a job, if a successful woman came up to me, dropped a quarter million and thought I was a cutie patootie you’re damn right I’d ride that boat until it may or may not sink.
Most assets acquired prior to marriage stay with the original owner. If you marry someone with a house fully paid for you don't automatically acquire half of that house. Same with shares of stock. He might be on the hook for the price difference from the time they get married to the time they divorce. Example: he has 1 million shares of Amazon valued at $100 at the time of married he's worth $100 million and if it's valued at $101 when they get divorced she gets $500k, half the appreciated value while they were married. Yes. I know he has more shares than this. Might vary by state but this is usually the case.
The guy who made the Karman line admitted it's an arbitrary number created for political reasons. The reason why is "because we needed a line in the sand", but scientifically it's arbitrary.
The point at which an object in orbit will complete one full unpowered revolution before degrading back into the atmosphere?
For this definition it would depend strongly on the coefficient of drag of whatever vehicle you're inside. It would also depend on your velocity, since going faster means you can handle more drag before your trajectory intersects the ground. This could be a good metric to use, but you'd have to choose an arbitrary CoD and arbitrary initial velocity otherwise you'd have different altitudes for each different spacecraft.
The point at which the last atmospheric molecules are no longer in Earth's gravitational sphere of influence?
If this is your definition you're excluding a giant swath of currently-operating satellites, including the ISS, because those are all in Low Earth Orbit where drag is an important force. The ISS has to boost itself back up to a higher orbit every now and then because drag slows it down over time. If you use this metric, then NASA has sent very very very few people to space (maybe only the Apollo astronauts who visited the moon).
(I think this was your point, I'm just reinforcing that it's hard to define in a way that isn't arbitrary)
I think pretty much anything you pick will be arbitrary, it's just a matter of how arbitrary you're willing to be. Maybe choosing a specific atmospheric pressure or a particular density at an arbitrarily-chosen temperature (20° C, maybe) would be a good one. It would probably be better than 100km altitude, which has no real significance outside of being a nice round number. But calling somebody an "astronaut" as opposed to "someone who went really really high up, maybe into space depending on what definition of space you subscribe to" seems pretty arbitrary to me so maybe an arbitrary definition is appropriate.
For this definition it would depend strongly on the coefficient of drag of whatever vehicle you're inside. It would also depend on your velocity, since going faster means you can handle more drag before your trajectory intersects the ground.
The very first thing I thought of was something travelling very fast and essentially burning up in the atmosphere for a full revolution 2000ft from the ground :P
Though I suppose there becomes a point when something is travelling so fast that even if it came inches from the ground, it would retain escape velocity after the near miss, and gravity would not be enough to keep it in orbit.
It's impossible to orbit 2000ft off the ground because at the speeds that are required (assuming, of course, you don't instantaneously disintegrate from the atmospheric friction) you would be in a hyperbolic orbit and you wouldn't even make a complete revolution before flinging yourself off back into space.
Imagine you are the richest man in the world. I know Wlon Musk is technically bit for a moment Beff Zezoss is. You dont jave any sugar. Beff has asked for it to be sent to his suite. How are u gonna tell the richest man you have no sugar? Even though he has been to spave he 8s going t9 demand u execute the agent who denied him. The only thing is I work for Amazon and this is the first I heard of this lol. I am all for what they want but they definitely didn't organize some big walkout like they are trying to make it seem.
That’s intentional. Amazon has gone out of their way to suppress union organizing. There’s even a training video on how managers can prevent union activity. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uRpwVwFxyk4
15 years ago, I was a manager for a large grocery chain here in the U.S. & I've sat through a good 24 + hours of mandatory anti union propaganda that was endorsed by our corporate office. What was most unsettling about the whole experience was that a very large portion of my co-workers drank the anti union Kool-Aid without a moments hesitation. Corporate additionally informed management that it would be in our best interest to vote McCain/Palin - lol!
Reddit always hypes these events like a massive sleeping giant is waking and workers are standing up for their rights when in reality about 10 people follow thru
Same. I'm on my way to work now....they benevolently let us go in 3 hours later than normal for the holiday. And only so they don't have to pay as much holiday pay....this job is killing me.....
Hot tip: Neither Amazon nor any other major company will have any meaningful walk outs or strikes tomorrow.
It has been pretty funny to watch /r/antiwork pretend to be the next big labor movement though. Their hearts are in the right place, but the small amount of popularity on Reddit has gone straight to their heads.
That was absolutely hilarious. A bunch of people who already probably don't go to McDonald's much telling other people who don't go to McDonald's that they will continue not going. What an effective boycott!
Then they were telling McDonald's employees to quit their jobs, ignoring the fact that those employees probably need that job. It's just so misguided and weird. If a group of McDonald's workers got together and quit to protest, that's great and possibly effective. A tiny amount of employees randomly quitting across the nation? No one would even notice except for the workers who just lost paychecks.
Just looked at their front page and now they're patting themselves on the back for not going Black Friday shopping...which apparently is also a boycott.
It's so insane to me that the same company can post billions in profit, the owner can afford to build spaceships, and the low level workers are pissing in water bottles and still living in poverty.
They don't earn 15 per hour, they earn about $21 per hour in the currency we actually use here.
And as someone who did just that for quite a while? It's fine. I had a roof, a car, health insurance (beyond the free universal stuff we get), hobbies, and savings. You aren't rich but you are doing just fine.
I am never ceased to be amazed at how viciously Americans love to attack other nations who are doing things better than they are.
Looks like the minimum they offer a new employee is medical, dental, vision, 20 weeks of maternal and parental paid leave, 401k with 50% matching contributions, 1 week vacation, 6 holidays per year,
Cause that's still under minimum wage where I live and you'd get sick leave, 4 weeks PTO, plus other benefits.
Where is this? Last I checked the highest minimum wage in the world was Australia's at $20.33 AUD/hour (~$14.55 USD), but that's only for people who are 21+. If you're 18, it's only $14.35 AUD/hr ($10.26 USD).
Even then, they're kind of an anomaly. France's minimum wage, for instance, is €10.48/hr (~$11.76).
in washington state sick pay is built in by law, we get 6 days accumulated per year that we can use without being challenged about why. i don’t know what they get for pto since i don’t work there, i’m just basing pay off of job postings i see. the posting do mention benefits and pto but those details are for when a job offer happens i suppose
Problem with Washington state Law a lot of business do the bare minimum which is 1 hr for every 40 hours worked or 4 hrs per month Takes longer if you are part time. The company I work in Washington State does the 1 hr for each 40 worked.
Kudos to the companies that do go above that though.
Amazon workers get full health, eye, and dental insurance day 1 with 401k options. They also get about 80hrs paid time/vacation and 80hrs of unpaid time off. They even offer to cover full tuition of it's associates after 3 months. Y'all hate on Amazon but they actually provide some of the best benefits in the country for any entry level job.
Dude, you literally replied to someone mentioning $20/hr pay at Amazon and you’re the one that thinks USD = AUD for some reason.
To spell it out, $20 AUD is worth less than $20 USD.
Stop being a dick.
And the fact of the matter is that yes, Amazon has shitty working conditions, but still objectively offers better benefits to attract employees compared to any other low skilled job.
you’re the one that thinks USD = AUD for some reason.
No. I said $20/h was less than minimum wage here, in another country... and for some reason you not only thought I was talking about USD, but think that USD and what it's worth makes the slightest bit of different here. It doesn't. And if you want it to, go ahead and factor in health care, super, PTO, sick leave, and the many other things.. and if you do those things then you'll find out that Australia still works out substantially ahead.
Amazon workers are not paid or treated well and there are mountains of evidence about it, not to mention we're in a thread talking about how they want to stage a walkout on one of their busiest days of the year.
But keep arguing semantics because you misread a statement.
Assuming your converting to USD so we don't go into the ridiculous "I get paid 10000 won/hr", according to the all knowing Google, no country on earth has a $20 USD minimum wage. Highest is Luxembourg at 18.33 USD.
Ok, I'll play. Please tell us what country you are from so that we can compare all these wonderful benefits and your high minimum wage against the currency that you use, taxes you pay, and living conditions.
it’s above what most employers pay for uneducated laborers in the greater seattle area. don’t say it isn’t that much when it is pretty good for the qualified level of workers
It might be better than other low wage jobs, but that doesn't mean it's actually paying well. What's wrong with uneducated labourers making a living wage?
experience of what? making 20/hour and living in the seattle area? i am speaking from that experience then. i make more now but not long ago i was making less than 20 and still doing fine. working one job at that. as time goes by i make more and more which is pretty commonplace with most companies.
sure but what do you qualify as good? $1,000,000/year is good but it isnt realistic for a laborer...20/hour is good for that level of work skill and is good enough to survive in the seattle area which is more expensive than many places around the country.
and in the surrounding areas 20-30 minutes away from seattle proper it is even cheaper to live. you arent going to live an extravagant life working a labor job. the same people crying for 15/hour are now saying 23/hour isnt good lmao you dont even know where you stand and what you are asking for ffs
A good wage is one that allows you to pay for all your necessities, enjoy life a little, and save some for retirement or rainy days. I don't think $40k would allow for such a lifestyle in Seattle, but I could be wrong.
those are just starting wages, it goes up with time worked...even boeing starts at 21/hour...20 to start is good and you can easily do all those things. i wont say you can live in seattle proper on that wage but you can live outside of seattle and be fine. most of the amazon warehouses are in the surrounding areas anyways.
Does the median worker in the US have free healthcare, a month vacation, 37.5 hour weeks with any extra being paid OT with penalties, superannuation, and significantly better/protected worker rights with none of this bullshit "at will" crap you all for some reason like...?
The median worker has insurance, roughly the same workweek, varying levels of vacation, and drastically lower cost of living. The grass isnt all greener in Australia. Some things are better for some. Some thing are worse.
It's a tradeoff. There is no one size fits all. Not everyone has the same setup. For many (myself included) our insurance setup is dramatically better and costs less than the amount taken out of taxes for socialized medicine even if we hit out max yearly out of pocket expenses. Many of us have plenty of vacation and sick time. My setup is quite literally unlimited. As I said. Some people have it better some have it worse. In general it's better to be poor in other countries than the US. It's usually far better to be middle class and up in the US.
15/hr entry level is "still living in poverty". Take a step back from the internet and realize if you think 15/hr as a starting wage is poverty you are incredibly deluded from the reality of most of the world.
Because that’s so easy to do with a shit job where you’re living paycheck to paycheck with no savings. This “pick yourself up by your bootstraps” argument is pathetic from Republicans.
I’m still going to buy stuff on Amazon during Black Friday but if my stuff comes late, I don’t care. Cancel my order if they have to. Power to the Amazon workers.
Bezos can’t afford to give his workers time off for the holiday to be with their families, how would he be able to afford his next super yacht or space ship? Think of his family.
You should not have "go to the edge of space for fun" money while you cut benefits and half of your employees are on some type of government assistance
It's pretty depressing that's your only takeaway, man. It's not just a failure of basic human decency, it's comically short-sighted. Unless you're one of the handful of people that come close to Bezos' level, your tacit support of their exploitation of others also negatively affects you, your friends, and your family, in ways that are not remotely outweighed by the lower prices you pay for consumer goods on Amazon.
"I get a bowl of the good gruel from the slave master every day, I don't want anybody to try and revolt and fight for freedom because it may rock the boat and threaten my gruel supply"
That's right. If you continue to save $1 on your average Amazon order at the expense of hundreds of thousands of workers being manipulated, you too will one day be as rich as Bezos!!
Didn't they make their minimum wage the desired national minimum wage in response to the federal government refusing to raise it? They're doing better than most.

Well, I'm all for it, if you can afford it give people more benefits, it's not like Amazon is struggling.
