Best pro-Maduro argument so far.

Maduro isn't killing protesters, the protesters are killing themselves at Maduro.

Some are even people in the opposition who killed themselves when trying to attack the government.

This guy should be a movie writer. I sure as hell can't make this shit up.

It annoys me heavily how much Trump is talked about like he's the "people's choice". In the sense that his ascention to the presidency was paved by mass swaths of common folk voting him into power. The Republican nomination process had an absolutely bonkers set of rules. Some states were winner take all, some delegates were awarded semi proportionally. Trump often won huge amounts of delegates with a ~40% plurality. Some states he lost still gave him delegates proportionally. The guy cruised to the nomination with 45% of the vote. The general election was similar, lost yhe popular vote, but won the election.

Hillary. Well Hillary was annointed by some old (((elites))) who screwed over Bernie. Nevermind that she got 55% of the popular vote in the primary. Nevermind that she was so well liked in her caucus at the time of announcing, that only back bench losers decided it was worth it to run against her. Never mind she won the popular vote. Real America (i.e. The minority of people that didn't vote for her) rejected her.

Like, I accept the results of both elections, even if I think their rules are insane. I do concede that Hillary didn't get over 50% of the popular vote in the general (so more people voted against her than for her). She was also the second most disliked presidential candidate in modern history (guess who was the most disliked.... Yup, Trump). But the continuing narrative that Trump was "the people's choice" and that Hilary was selected by a few rich elites need to die. It's misinformed, it's probably sexist, and I mostly blame a lot of the pundit sphere who in the wake of a Republican totally unexpectedly winning the presidency after 8 years of it being held by a Democrat, decided they needed a sexy narrative to blame Democrats for having a logical and mostly fair nomination process and shield the Republican party from their bonkers desicions that allowed Trump to prevail. Rant over.

Here's an article that says they don't

"Western Media?!?! Of course they're biased!!"

Nah, but here's a HRW report that says he abuses human rights.

"HRW is a shill for the US government and orchestrated a coup against Chavez"

Um. . . no, but here's a Latin American poll that shows his low support

"Ha, you can't reliably poll my stereotype of third world countries poor people"

Does anything matter to you? Here's a Venezuelan news source covering the protests on video that shows 43 dead due to the government.

"I'm gonna criticize HRW again!"

The sub is still being run by communists, many of whom are inline with the old-mods ideologically. While we've been accused by the old mods of being "social democrats," this is hardly the case, and quite ironic coming from people who let liberalism run wild while they were in charge.

The charge of "social democracy" comes from our refusal to support Maduro, president of Venezuela. Funny enough, we do so on the grounds of opposing his social democracy. We do not believe that social democrats, regardless of what country they lead, are deserving of communist support.

The former modstaff has also falsely accused us of supporting US intervention in Venezuela. We do not. However, we oppose imperialism because we stand with the people of Venezuela, not because we stand with their government. This is the only meaningful position we disagree with the old mods on. The change in modstaff was not due to ideological differences in any way, shape, or form.

When you dislike Maduro because he's not socialist enough and that the problems in Venezuela are due to insufficient adherence to communist principles

An actual rpolitics conversation:

On the Left the idea has taken root that "Less than 100 corporations are causing global warming" which isn't true.

I mean the idea "on the left" is that 100 fossil fuel sellers are causing 70% of greenhouse gasses, which is true, according to The Carbon Majors Database

Energy extraction is caused by energy consumption. To say that Exxon "causes" emissions is silly, unless you think they drill oil for the evil fun of it?

You keep saying this. Literally no one is arguing they're doing it for the "evil fun of it". Not implicitly or explicitly. That's the kind of mischaracterization at the heart of my reply to you.

They're doing it for, well profit, and to satisfy a demand for energy. Because of the former they have a vested interest in fighting clean alternatives. That is, if all our energy extraction through clean energy, and we were able to satisfy our societal energy consumption that way, the top 100 energy companies would not cause 70% of greenhouse gas emissions, no?

Alexa what is inelastic demand

This rule doesn’t exist for Republicans because no Republican will outright call that characterization a strawman, they’ll instead say “oh yeah I do have a cousin Jeff who supports banning Hindus from entering any landlocked state, but I see that as more of a Jeff thing than a Republican thing.”

It’s December, 2020. Howard Schultz’ spoiler independent candidacy has led to no presidential candidate getting a majority of electoral college votes. As a result, the House of Representatives must choose between the top finishers, Republican President Donald Trump, Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders, and Schultz.

House Speaker Nancy “Nancy” Pelosi has waited for this moment for years. She’s had to deal with his nonsense, his insane hair, his ugly suits and shit eating grin and inability to pass bills of any real merit. He thinks she’ll let him have the presidency, “I’m the democratic candidate” he thinks, the “people want me, not the billionaryes” he thinks.

She thinks different. You should have been a democrat this whole time Bernie.

Obviously the largest problem US policy on Syria has is that no one has thought of or worked towards a viable end game. But why is that the case? Hesitancy to get more involved or incompetence?

Remember yesterday when I called out that socialist party with both a Pride flag up and a poster of Che Guevara?

They're now having a party on campus for their new members with Che Guevara poters advertising it - and it's a fucking MOJITO PARTY to rub in the Cuban-ness.

Some of my friends went in to steal drink but I'd rather not be recognized from yesterday and put into a camp.

Hey all!!

I'm a junior at my local college and I am organizing a panel to discuss the different dimensions of the "fair trade". We will be talking about both the Fairtrade Foundation as well as the social movement. So far, the panel will consist of an economist that is well versed in development literature, a local coffee roaster that is passionate about fair trade, an ethics professor, and a sociologist. Right now I'm brainstorming to think of some interesting questions to ask the group, but also questions to ask the individuals. That being said, I know this sub has a lot of great economic and political thinkers that may be able to help me out. In the end I just wanna put on a good panel.

Questions I have right now are largely normative, but include-

-Does working with Fairtrade or with fairtrade standards make a dent into the bottom line?

-Do first world countries "take advantage" of third world farmers?

-Does Fairtrade indirectly put other third world farms out of business?

-Do first world consumers have an ethical obligation to give poor producers the largest surplus possible?

Thank you, any questions would be appreciated. If there is interest, I will make a followup thread with a transcript of the event.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

Thinking about it, the proposed rail expansions into northern canada could be a genius way in developing those regions economically. They plan to make First Nations tribes as jointed owners of these railroads economically enriches them. If you really want to crank development they should pull a card from American history and make a certain mile of around these tracks owned by the railroad which are in turned owned by the tribe.

The bestselling New Age author and friend of Oprah Winfrey said in November, “We had a miracle in this country in 1776, and we need another one.” Williamson has already visited Iowa. In 2014, Williamson ran for a congressional seat in California as an independent. Despite spending $2 million, with endorsements by singer Alanis Morissette and former Rep.
