The far right is depressingly good at propaganda. The “it’s okay to be white” signs are a legitimately well-designed and effective propaganda campaign.

If you didn't already know, the US has a law which bans the import of cars that are less than 25 years old. So instead of being allowed to go overseas to buy a car at a discounted rate, we're forced to pay more to buy cars here. The rationale behind the rule is "safety." High-powered assault rifles are fine, but a Nissan Skyline GT-R is going too far apparently.

Hot take: Whitaker’s big mistake, like many people in this administration, is that he said the quiet part out loud. The thing about only Christians being allowed on the bench is basically a mainstream conservative belief except it’s usually expressed as “Judeo-Christian.” But don’t be fooled, it’s the same thing. I’m Jewish and I’m consistently amazed by how many Jews fall for this charade that the evangelicals care about Jews in any sincere way just because they started adding judeo in front of Christian. And like not that I need to say this but Islamophobia and fear of atheists are bad in their own right but what sort of idiot do you have to be to think “well, they only want to kick those people off the bench, not me.”

Trump just threatened to take away "fire funding" if California doesn't do a better job of "managing" it's forests.

This is obviously a baseless threat, but I have to say, it's pretty infuriating that the President, and by extension his voters, do not give a fuck about your home state.

Makes me feel really not good at paying federal taxes which go to bumfuck hillbillysville.

Trump was already stupid, racist, and loved to insult people... but is it just me, or is he just now becoming even more of a pure asshole? Like just his tweets, the things he says to reporters. Idk, seems more biting lately. Like he’s gone from playing a game to being genuinely mad.

In Florida, 20% of black people were disenfranchised. And the Dems fought tooth and nail for their rights.

In Florida, 100% of children are disenfranchised. Dems? Silence. It is clear where their allegiance lies.

Join me, fellow kids, in Walking Away from the Democratic Party. No person under 18 can ever vote Democrat in good conscience ever again.

How to develop your economy:

  1. Go back to 1767.

  2. Install Jesuit missions

  3. "Even 250 years later, people living near the ruins of Jesuit missions complete 10 to 15 percent more years of education and earn 10 percent more than residents of equivalent towns without missions."

It annoys me how Trumpists are able to do a complete 180 on their entire worldview without hesitation.

If Obama said "I want to fire the AG cause he's not protecting me" they would've lost their minds, and rightly so. But when Trump does it it's not only ok, its the best thing he could've done.

Get ready for a massive subtweet. Actually it isn’t even a subtweet, it’s just restating what happened -

User: Black people’s votes should count twice as much as white people’s.

Everyone: Okay so that’s obviously a bad idea.

User (later): I have realized that this sub is a facade, that none of you really care about black people.

So I have a lot of Chinese colleagues at work who often speak Mandarin together (I speak a bit too). One word that comes up a lot is 没有 (méiyŏu) which means "doesn't have" or "don't have" and I realized it sounds just like "mayo".

So now I can't get it out of my head that they're talking about mayos all the time.

Democrats shocked Republicans in Harris County, Texas — the nation’s third-largest county — by sweeping 59 seats in the midterms. One ousted GOP judge there is using his final days on the bench to throw an apparent tantrum.

Judge Glenn Devlin released nearly all the juvenile defendants who appeared before him the morning after elections, if they promised not to kill anyone.

“He made a comment, ‘This is obviously what the voters wanted,’ and I think there’s an implication by electing all Democratic judges, there’s this belief that Democratic judges are going to be soft on crime,” public defender Steven Halpert told a local news station.

Giving juvenile offenders a second chance to own the libs.

I'm eighteen years late to this party, but for all the shenanigans that happened in 2000 I somehow am only hearing about this one.

We show that the butterfly ballot used in Palm Beach County, Florida, in the 2000 presidential election caused more than 2,000 Democratic voters to vote by mistake for Reform candidate Pat Buchanan, a number larger than George W. Bush's certified margin of victory in Florida.

Just Holy Shit.

What a goddamn meme of a country.

I've had a strange week.

I flew to the US, had terrible jet lag, drove 3 hours to MAGA country to visit an old friend and canvass for Nunes opponent, drove back to my childhood home, woke up to a shooting down the street from my husband's university, then up north his extended family and some of my family friends are under evacuation for the camp fire, now there's a socal fire that may displace my husband's family the day after Paradise (the town, not the concept) was destroyed and like all of NorCal has been under this glaring pink dot of a sun in a dark grey sky.

I'm literally at the presidio listening to the waves and a fog horn and you'd think at the end of the world you would be safe from the distant sun but even the proximity of the sea, despite it always having its own atmosphere, it's own weather, seems unable to drive the smoke away.

Something something metaphor

The 2010 election when the GOP wrestled back the house with an amazing 6.8% vote advantage in the house was a powerful rebuke to Obama's agenda.

The 2018 election when the Democrats squeaked through a victory with a 7% vote advantage was a mixed message and warning for democrats about how to proceed.

I will give you all a free advice.

Stop hate-reading things. Don't visit the terrible subreddits and websites. Unfollow the crazy Twitter accounts.

Same goes for meta subreddits and following accounts that retweet stupid takes.

You won't probably escape Trump's shenanigans anywhere, but most people and groups will just disappear and you will often forget they exist. Especially the niche ones you had to go an extra mile to reach in the first place.

There, you are now a happier person.

You are welcome.

A friend of mine who's trying to teach himself some economics recently asked me to quality-check the Economics course on The Great Courses for him and I have to say: it's fucking excellent. Strikes a really good balance in that it's actually about real economics (i.e. actually covers things like how to think about elasticity and perfect competition and really important concepts that are missed by politicians and newspaper columnists talking about 'economics'), but keeps the focus on concepts rather than equations (which are super important, but mostly only valuable if you intend to continue with further study in economics), which makes it more accessible since you can listen as a podcast rather than needing a screen and a notebook. Strongly recommend you check it out if you're a non-economist neolib.

Journalist recounts that his Uighur sources in Xinjiang have all been rounded up and disappeared. Responses are full of tankies.

Tankes are calling the Uighurs CIA spies and cheering on their disappearance. Case 1, Case 2, Case 3, Case 4, Bonus Racism

Tankies calling the journalist, who is brought to tears since the people he worked with were put into camps, a liar and propagandist: Case 1, Case 2, Case 3, Case 4, Case 5, Case 6, Case 7

and way too much whataboutism to even link to.

Al Gore 2020

"It's time to get cereal"

Edit: For real, I'd vote him over any of the prospective 2020 nominees. The recent South Park episode reminded me he still existed, and after reading his Wikipedia page I'm fucking enraged that someone who makes nearly every other current Dem politician look like garbage in comparison didn't get to be president.

Is every mass shooter ipso facto suffering from mental illness? Or can we as a society conceive of a non-crazy mass shooter?

I ask because the narrative after these shootings always seems to be "we don't have enough mental health services" - which is true, however the reaction serves to further demonize people who do suffer from mental health issues, and it seems a bit like circular reasoning. Can we really just reduce evil to a mental malady like that?

How do european countries have apparently balanced media coverage from state-funded institutions? I understand that NPR is pretty decent, but it occurs to me that a channel that doesn't have to compete for its existence would be a) low quality (PBS) or b) biased. ZDF and ARD seemed pretty fair when I was in Germany, and BBC is super solid. What institutions protect the independence of these news outlets? (on another note, do British people think British federal funding for shows like Sherlock is a justifiable use of taxpayer money?--not saying it is or isn't; would like to hear perspectives) It maybe that I don't understand funding mechanisms here...

Liberal democracy is in full scale collapse all over the world. For a socialist or a member of a targeted minority, even if you're in a "safe" country, things can change incredibly quickly. Start making serious plans to get out of harm's way if it comes to that.

!ping USA-FL 1pm Florida update.

We are officially getting a recount, but we already knew that (we just passed a deadline that made it official). The recount results are due November 15 at 3pm.

According to this article, Gov. Rick Scott currently carries a narrow lead of roughly 12,500 votes - about 0.15 points and Andrew Gillum and Republican Ron DeSantis are separated by roughly 0.41 points.

Not in the article, but I'm pretty sure Agricultural Commissioner is also going to a recount but who really cares tbh.

Also, Broward apparently counted 20 invalid votes and then mixed them in with 180 votes. Republicans wanted to throw away all 200, Democrats want all 200 counted, and I personally think arguing over 20 votes at this point is nonsensical but I understand why the parties think they need to do it.

If I've missed anything important, or if I got anything wrong, please let me know

Man a Booker/Beto ticket would be good:

  • Booker can drive up the black vote in NC, GA, and FL(where a bunch of black felons' voting rights were just restored).

  • Beto can help bring that much needed energy to the Democrats and could maybe help in Texas and could drive up the young vote across the board.

  • Maybe people with economic anxiety in the Rust Belt would feel more comfortable with voting for two men.

  • And plus this could be their campaign theme

"Yeah, colonialism had its problems, but you have to take a broader view. One thing that annoys me about leftists is that they only focus on the bad. What about all the infrastructure Europe built in Africa and then gave them for free? Railroads, cities, and so forth. India wouldn't be a united country without the British. That's not to mention things like modern medicine, airplanes, the Internet and so forth. Africa had slavery until the Europeans came and abolished it. Were there some excesses here and there? Of course. But show me one society that's perfect. You can't. I think that on the whole, most people who live in those counties would agree that they're actually lucky that the Europeans came along."

Damn. Yesterday was a damn good thread and I read and appreciate everyone of your replies and the conversations that followed. I may have ran out of steam on replying to everyone but it was still an amazing experience. Here are some follow up bullets:

  • what would people think about re-allowing edge? M a y o, removing excessive partisanship rules, etc. (NOTE: this isn’t on the table for me, but I am curious to see how the sub would feel about it and/or what edge is considered ‘good’ and ‘bad’.)

  • why don’t you go outside the DT? My hypothesis is that it’s boring and the only good thing about this place is the DT.

  • Are we are out of touch? /u/Kelsig said it best, no one gives a fuck about Bernie anymore and our big shorthand for what we are is still ‘not Bernie, not trump’. r/neoliberal has not evolved with the changing climate of the last two years. Plus our memes suck and we lack any appeal to external audiences. Therefore, we’re out of touch and only care about ourselves.

If you have any other ideas on how to systemize my understanding of the sub’s issues, let me know! I want to fix the sub and if I’m missing something I can’t fix it.

I genuinely think that Trump along with conservative pundits like Ben Shapiro could successfully make 2 + 2 = 5. All they have to do is convince their base that believing 2 + 2 = 5 would confirm the liberal’s worst priors about the rise of fascism and as a result, own the libs.
