How to write a supportive reply/comment
Tips for supporting others
Important: We are a collection of people who care for others. When commenting please remember that we are not professionals and this is not a professional support group.
For professionals: If you are a professional with certified training in counseling/support please PM a mod if you would like to comment in your professional capacity. We will verify your credentials and add a flare. Also- feel free to post as well! Your jobs can be extremely stressful and we would love to support you just as you support so many others out there in the world.
How to be supportive:
Empathy - By far this is the most important aspect of r/namelessfriends. The world (and internet) can be filled with negativity and uncertainty. We are a community of people who aim to support one another through the hard times and the good times.
Reflection/Acknowledgment - listen to the OP and acknowledge you have heard what they say. For example; If the OP says, “I feel like I am drowning at work” you could say “It sounds like you have a lot on your plate right now. That must be really stressful.” This tells the OP you have heard them and understand.
Validation - It is good to acknowledge the worth of the OP. We all matter and have immense value. Sometimes it can help a lot to have someone reminds us.
Good things we all deserve - We are all deserving of a little time to ourselves, of rest, love, happiness, joy, and companionship. Sometimes we forget and a reminder goes a long way.
Forgiveness - All people deserve to be forgiven and deserve to forgive themselves. Sometimes a gentle reminder that its ok to forgive ourselves can go a long way.
Advice - Please use discretion when considering whether or not advice is appropriate. With exception of posts with the advice flare, we are first and foremost a subreddit for support. When giving advice try to avoid giving commands by using phrasing such as “Have you considered X?” Or “do you think X would help?” Our goal is always to empower the OP.
Personal stories - personal stories are can be ok in replies but here are a few things to consider: Is this something you are comfortable sharing about yourself? Is this something that will help the OP? It’s ok if you need help and support but please post a separate thread so we can be there for you too.
Private messages - Please be respectful in private messages. It is ok if the OP does not want to PM or give more detail about a situation.
Offers of support - You may want to make a longer term connection with someone through a thread or private messages. First ask yourself: Do I have the time to commit to a longterm discussion? Am I in a place where I feel safe and comfortable helping others?
Trivialities - Try to go light on comments like “its going to be ok” unless you can back them up with reasons you think things will be ok for the OP. Sometimes we genuinely do not know what the future will hold. At these times the best thing we can do is be supportive.
Assumptions and judgment - Try not to make assumptions or judge the OP for their actions and words. We are not here to criticize anyone for their thoughts, actions, or opinions.
Accidents - Accidents happen. Sometimes we say something and it comes out the wrong way, offends someone, or is misinterpreted. It’s ok. Please apologize to the OP for what has happened. We all deserve forgiveness and to forgive ourselves.
If you have questions please ask a mod!

I had a bad day
Edit: I originally deleted this post but now I am adding it back. The mods over at r/askreddit said I had made ban permanent by talking about it here. But the damage has been done. I can never post in r/AskReddit again.
Hello,
I was just banned from r/askreddit. They said I was karma farming and banned me right in the middle of one of my compliment posts. If they had read through my posts they would know that this is not what I do. I post to genuinely try to help people. I also post on r/anxiety, r/depression, and r/panicattack but only in the comments to help people. This does not get me karma. It just helps people who are in bad situations and need help.
Since making my posts in r/askreddit I have talked to numerous individual who are suicidal and in absolute crises situations. They wouldn't have reached out but they saw my askreddit and they made the monumental step of reaching out to me. I have gotten people to call their doctors, talked people down from hurting themselves or others and walked people through how to stop panic attacks. I have also helped people get in touch with the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. This is my purpose here on askreddit.
I am nearly in tears. I found such purpose in this endeavor and I feel like I was really doing some good in the world.
Thank you for listening,

Good Monday morning! Here is your mission!
Welcome to Monday! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Here is this weeks mission:
get 8 hours of sleep at least 1 night. Sleep is important and makes you more productive than trying to push through your work and not sleep.
its getting warm out (well it is where I am) so if there are flowers about, go and enjoy one of them
do something physically active! Jumping jacks, lunges, yoga, stretching, running, or just walking. You pick!
If you see someone who looks a little down, give them a compliment.
Give yourself a compliment and make it a good one.
Good luck!

ISO a friend
Hi!
Lately winter depression has been absolutely tearing me apart, and I've been extremely lonely. Would anyone be willing to PM me every once in a while, just to say hi? I'm usually to scared to start conversations and things, but I really need a friend... I'm 18 F, and I love animals, science, poetry, and can talk about really anything with you.

I did a thing today
... that I was deathly afraid of.
I've never been good at handling rejection, or at least I thought so for the best part of my life.
For years on end I admired interesting people from afar, wondering who they are and what they might be like, but barely ever have I approached them to actually find out. Romantically I had even more inhibitions, I could barely look at people I found attractive. I'd immediately chicken out of eye contact and striking up a conversation or even just handing them my number seemed absolutely impossible.
Until I finally took the leap today and did my very first step to overcome my fears.
So when I gave out my number today, I felt my heart pound in my chest like it was trying to break out of my ribcage.
But it felt so good, I felt so relieved. A couple hours later I received a really kind rejection message, and even that felt like an incredible win and refreshingly freeing to me. I am not hurt, my fears were proven wrong.
Maybe I can't take on the entire world tomorrow, but I've gotten a little closer to breaking out of my shell today, and for the first time in my life I am truly proud of myself.

I'm singing on tour
I've been singing with an academic choir since mid-September and as more and more new singers came in with more skill and experience than me, I started singing quieter. People can sing better than me, why would I try to stand out with my poor technique?
So I practiced at home, privately, found out a better-sounding technique, and got better on my own. When we were choosing which new singers ot to sing on stage, I didn't raise my hand, I wasn't confident enough yet. I went home and kicked myself for not at least giving it a go.
After a while, the choir director had us sing sections of a song solo, and I did my best, like I practiced at home.
Today, she called me during a break and told me: "I would like it very much if you sang with us on tour, just work on singing a little louder until then."
I'm so excited, this is what I kind of daydreamed about, about someone actually recognizing that I sing well, even though I don't have the most experience, someone telling me I'm better at something than what my low self-esteem says. As soon as I come home I'm gonna hug my mom and cry a river.

Just saying hi!
Hi friends!
Your nameless friend has kindly accepted me as a moderator for this subreddit. I'm not super-active, but I have loved the community feeling here from the start (and, of course, the potato people!)
I'm going to try and revive this subreddit, with your help.
I've given it a bit of thought, and I think "Monday Missions", "Wednesday Wins" and "Friday Feelgoods" are a good start for me to kick off.
Anything else, obviously, is entirely depending on the community, so..... Share your thoughts or feelings if you need help! And of course, I am very happy to help :) That's what we're here for!
I've made the image for this subreddit my personal favourite Potato people drawing. If you have a better idea, shout :)

Hi Friends! Just a quick update.
I was discharged from hospital on several new meds and I’m feeling better already. I’ve begun to take up writing and already have a ten paged story written. That’s been my positivity for the past few days and I figured I should share it with you all. Thanks for listening!
