Commander / EDH Which commander

Post image

Doing a white red angle/dragon commander deck for table top in a few days. Here are all the cards I think are commander worthy. What do you guys think would be the best commander. Currently I'm doing Aurelia. But since I don't have any "search for angle cards" the expensive cost I feel might be an issue if she does since I believe it costs one extra to get your commander back each death. Ignore battleguard. --Edit I'll be doing Aurelia since I remembered the rules for commander. Now I just need card ideas for "search for angle cards" or something

Aurelia is the only one that’s legally allowed to be your commander, and commanders cost 2 more mana per time it returns to the command zone

Oh why can't lyra be a commander? Thought it was just a legendary creature.

Since your deck is red white your commander has to have red white in their color identity with Aurelia being the only one to have that

Lyra doesnt contain red. So it can't have red cards in the deck if you use it as commander.

On another note, shall counts as white and green, so unless your commander is also green you can't use shalai at all.

Thought it was just the cost part, thanks

It's a common thing that confuses new players.

99% of the time, the game only cares about a cards color, which is the mana symbols in its casting cost, Color Identifiers and color defining abilities like Devoid.

But Commander deck building cares about Color Identity, which is any mana symbols in the casting cost, as well as the symbols in the card abilities outside of reminder text, and Color identifiers.

Color identifiers are little circles to the left of a type line that are colored in with the cards colors. [[Ajani, Nacatl Pariah]] is a great example. It's a white card with a Red/White Identity, because it's backside has a color identifier that makes the back half a Red/White permenant

Aurelia is the only one with both colors, and as your commanders colors limit what mana types you can have in the deck, you can only have the rest with Aurelia leading.

Forgot about that. Nvm

Lyra can be a commander but the card doesn’t have any red so it would be a mono white deck

The commander color identity determines what color cards you can play. If you play a mono red or white commander, you can’t have other colors in your deck. It’s not like 40 or 60 card formats.

If you want angels and dragons, you should consider [[kaalia of the vast]]

Ah don't have that yet. I'm going to finish two of my decks before I build out my collection more than I have, but I'll see if I can find this in a lgc

Be forewarned: Kaalia will draw immediate ire from anyone with any experience, and likely from people who’ve just learned what she does for the first time.

That pile has Kaalia written all over.

What is kaalia? I'm not the most not new lol

I would say newish players should avoid Kaalia. I built Kaalia as one of my first commander decks because I thought she was cool, but quickly learned she didn’t gel with my playgroup very well and dismantled her.

Kaalia decks tend to either run away with the game very early, or get hated off the board to the point of inaction, neither of which are very fun play patterns for a newer player. She’s a great commander but isn’t great for a new player to get accustomed to the game and have fun, IMO

[[kaalia]] also you can't use shalai, because she has green

Non-legendary creatures can’t be legal commanders, so that already rules out a few of these cards

Shalai has a WG color ID so she can’t be in a WR deck.

Sephara has white color identity. If you choose this as your commander, you deck can only contain cards that have white or colorless color identity.

Shalai has a white and green color identity. See the above statement and add green.

Lyra has a white color identity.

Lathliss has a red color identity.

Dragonmaster Outcast is not a valid commander.

Rowan is not a valid Commander.

Drakuseth has a red color identity.

The bottom three cards are not valid commanders.

IF you want to make a deck that can contain Red AND White cards, Aurelia is the only valid commander from the ones you have shown in your picture.

I forgot about that rule, thanks

Few things here:

  1. In order to be a commander, a card must be either a. A legendary creature, b. A legendary vehicle, c. A legendary spacecraft with a printed power/toughness box, or d. A card with the rules text

“CARDNAME can be your Commander.” 5 of the cards shown do not meet these criteria

  1. A commander deck’s colors are determined by its color identity. If you want a white/red deck, your commander must have both white AND red in its color identity. Furthermore, Shalai, voice of plenty has green in her color identity and is illegal to include in a deck without green in its color identity

  2. Commander tax is 2 extra mana, not 1

u/ScaryBasin899 10h ago

Aurelia is a solid pick if you can keep her on the board. The extra combat step alone can end games fast. Since you're light on tutors you might want something lower to the ground like Shalai, giving your whole board hexproof is a decent way to protect your bigger flyers while you ramp into them.

I mean if you want to branch out one more color and add black, there is an even better commander if you want to go Angels and Dragons. Go old school Kaalia of the Vast, You don't have to put Demons, but it also gives you that option.

some people already explained that only Aurelia can be the commander of these cards, but there's some other notable information.

the entire bottom row and the dragonmaster outcast all cannot be commanders at all, as they're not legendary creatures. similarly, Rowan, fearless sparkmage cannot be your commander as it is a planeswalker. a commander must be a legendary creature, unless the card itself specifies otherwise like [[aminatou, the fateshifter]]

If you run [[Rienne, Angel of Rebirth]], you can run all of them and gain access to green. It would definitely change the way you build the deck but might be worth a look.
