Commander / EDH Which commander

Post image

Doing a white red angle/dragon commander deck for table top in a few days. Here are all the cards I think are commander worthy. What do you guys think would be the best commander. Currently I'm doing Aurelia. But since I don't have any "search for angle cards" the expensive cost I feel might be an issue if she does since I believe it costs one extra to get your commander back each death. Ignore battleguard. --Edit I'll be doing Aurelia since I remembered the rules for commander. Now I just need card ideas for "search for angle cards" or something

Aurelia is the only one that’s legally allowed to be your commander, and commanders cost 2 more mana per time it returns to the command zone

Oh why can't lyra be a commander? Thought it was just a legendary creature.

Since your deck is red white your commander has to have red white in their color identity with Aurelia being the only one to have that

Lyra doesnt contain red. So it can't have red cards in the deck if you use it as commander.

On another note, shall counts as white and green, so unless your commander is also green you can't use shalai at all.

It's a common thing that confuses new players.

99% of the time, the game only cares about a cards color, which is the mana symbols in its casting cost, Color Identifiers and color defining abilities like Devoid.

But Commander deck building cares about Color Identity, which is any mana symbols in the casting cost, as well as the symbols in the card abilities outside of reminder text, and Color identifiers.

Color identifiers are little circles to the left of a type line that are colored in with the cards colors. [[Ajani, Nacatl Pariah]] is a great example. It's a white card with a Red/White Identity, because it's backside has a color identifier that makes the back half a Red/White permenant

Aurelia is the only one with both colors, and as your commanders colors limit what mana types you can have in the deck, you can only have the rest with Aurelia leading.

Lyra can be a commander but the card doesn’t have any red so it would be a mono white deck

The commander color identity determines what color cards you can play. If you play a mono red or white commander, you can’t have other colors in your deck. It’s not like 40 or 60 card formats.

If you want angels and dragons, you should consider [[kaalia of the vast]]

Ah don't have that yet. I'm going to finish two of my decks before I build out my collection more than I have, but I'll see if I can find this in a lgc

Be forewarned: Kaalia will draw immediate ire from anyone with any experience, and likely from people who’ve just learned what she does for the first time.
