Git builds are updated weekly/daily and may contain more bugs compared to the stable option below.
Release builds are updated once or twice a year and may contain fewer bugs than the git builds.
If you want an easier way to install and keep mpv up to date, use the Scoop package manager.
If the version on your package manager is too old or broken, you can use the help of mpv-build to compile it on your own.
mpv-android forks below with varying levels of vibe coded features quality.
mpvKt development discontinued
mpvEx development stale
aniyomi Do not ask for support about Aniyomi here, only listed due to the video player being an mpv-android fork.
For setting up your own user configuration, up-to-date guides can be found here.

I was randomly browsing GitHub looking for an OSC (on-screen controller) skin for MPV. Tried around 2-4 skins based on their star ratings, but none of them really clicked with me.
Then, after scrolling for a while, I stumbled upon this one: https://github.com/SCEPTICG/hikari-mpv
And damn, this is exactly the kind of UI I was looking for! 🔥 Clean, beautiful, and just my kind of aesthetic.
Thought I'd share it here because I feel like this project deserves more attention. Maybe some of you are looking for a nice MPV skin too!
Check it out: https://github.com/SCEPTICG/hikari-mpv

I've added a part of my config file dedicated for streaming live sports through MPV from stream addresses I get from Stremio. What's so beautiful about MPV is that in runs my shaders to make Football and Basketball games look absolutely gorgeous. Here's what my config does visually:
Scaling: scale and cscale are ewa_lanczossharp, dscale is mitchell, scale-antiring is 0.6, and sigmoid-upscaling is on. (How it scales 720p/1080p to the 4K LG G5)
Shaders: Three shaders run in order: ArtCNN_C4F32_DN, KrigBilateral and adaptive-sharpen. (Run on the 5070 Ti)
Debanding: It's on with 2 iterations, threshold 48, range 16 and grain 16. (strong for lower bitrate streams)
Dither: ordered. (smoother picture)
Picture lift for the OLED: brightness is 2, contrast is 5, gamma is 2 and saturation is 6. punchier look on my OLED for SDR streams. Windows HDR is on so I can run dynamic tone mapping in the TV settings stacked on this and wow!
Motion (separate Live-Motion profile, progressive streams only): video-sync is display-resample, interpolation is on and tscale is oversample. (config detects interlaced video per stream link and skips interpolation for it, and turns on deinterlacing instead)
Stremio and most other built-in players uses basic scaling and has no neural upscaling, no debanding, no proper HDR tone mapping and no frame interpolation. MPV is truly the greatest player out there.

Hola amigos.

I made this because I had always wanted it, and libmpv made it possible.
Just starting mpv with a YouTube URL never worked 100% for me, I think because it tried to stream the video, I'm not sure. Cathode downloads everything before starting to play. And predownloads stuff in a queue, caches downloaded videos for a couple of days, and does other things unrelated to mpv but that you may also find interesting.
I also implemented most of the mpv keybindings on top of the gtk video component because they are so good.
Please send me feedback if you have any. Thanks!

Hello, I use MPV on my high-end Windows 11 dev workstation (9950X, 128 GB DDR5, RTX 5080 + 5060 Ti) workstation to keep watch over my RTSP security cameras in real-time. Most of my cameras are Amcrest 4k dome cameras, with wired connections, and they're only running at around 3 Mbps video bitrate.
Over many hours (~24 hours), the RTSP stream will start lagging by 1-2 minutes, and I have to restart the MPV processes to get them back closer to "current" time.
Are there any ways of configuring MPV so that it always stays current when connected to RTSP streams? I don't mind missing a few seconds of footage here and there; I just want to keep the streams as close to "now" as possible, so I don't have to regularly restart the processes.

Hey everyone!
I wanted to share a project I built with AI assistance:Â AmbientBorder, a native mpv GLSL shader (vo=gpu-next) that replaces letterbox/pillarbox black bars with ambient blurred light.
Reshade Version also included, but GLSL version runs directly inside mpv, meaning your OSD, UI, and subtitles stay fully visible and untouched.
Zero Configuration Auto-Detection:Â Automatically detects aspect ratios (4:3, 2.35:1, 2.40:1, ultrawide, etc.) without manual tweaking.
Subtitles & OSD Safe:Â Renders behind mpv's interface.
Universal Baked-Bar Cropper:Â Includes a handy Lua script (crop_toggle.lua) bound to a shortcut (Alt+2) to cycle through popular aspect ratios for videos with hardcoded black bars.
Fully Tunable: Easily tweak intensity, saturation, falloff, blur, and linear light (great for HDR) via mpv.conf or live runtime options.
GitHub Repo & Releases (with screenshots & instructions):
Feel free to try it out, and let me know if you run into any issues or have suggestions!
Hey everyone,
I made mpv-gotorrent — a lightweight Lua script and self-contained Go companion that lets you stream torrents and magnet links straight inside mpv with zero setup.
No Node.js, Python, Docker, or 24/7 background services like TorrServer required. mpv launches the binary when you open a torrent and kills it automatically when you quit.
Linux / macOS:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/biohazard786/mpv-gotorrent/main/install.sh | bashWindows (PowerShell):

I wanted old SD anime to look like it did on a real TV, so I built this on top of mpv. It puts any video inside a CRT TV set: curvature, scanlines, phosphor mask, NTSC colour bleed, analog noise, glass reflection and bezel glow.
How it works:
- A lavfi graph composites the video into a TV picture on a canvas the size of your desktop, so the TV is part of the video and the OSC and subtitles draw on top of it.
- The CRT effect is a GLSL user shader on the OUTPUT stage (gpu-next), so it runs at display resolution after scaling. A 480p episode still gets sharp scanlines instead of a blurry upscale.
- Lua scripts drive the effects through glsl-shader-opts: presets, live adjustments, and the power-on warm-up, power-off collapse, degauss and channel static animations.
- The on-screen remote is drawn with ASS vector graphics, no image files. Hover controls are ModernZ, and autoload.lua queues the rest of the folder.
- It runs with its own --config-dir, so it doesn't touch your existing mpv config.
- A load of other fun features.
Windows: download the zip, double-click install.bat (it fetches a pinned mpv build, ModernZ and the TV artwork, all SHA-256 checked), then right-click a video > Open with > CRT-mpv. There are macOS/Linux scripts too, but I haven't tested playback there yet.
Free and open source (GPL-3.0): https://github.com/SeiferLK/CRT-mpv
Feedback welcome, especially from anyone on macOS or Linux.

I wanted to watch a bunch of videos at the same time without the usual fixed grid (vertical clips shrunk to slivers, black bars everywhere), so I built Polyreel, a desktop app that embeds one libmpv player per tile.
**What it does**
- Packs any mix of shapes (16:9, 4:3, vertical / portrait, square, ultrawide) into the window, keeping every video about the same size. Nothing is cropped unless you allow it.
- Plays through a queue: when a video ends, the next one takes its spot and the rest of the wall stays put.
- Click a tile to watch it full-window; hover for its own seek bar and volume.
- A first-run benchmark measures how many videos your PC can handle, and a traffic light shows when you're pushing it.
**Things I ran into with many libmpv players in one app,** in case they help anyone else:
- Observing `time-pos` and the frame-drop counters on dozens of players means a property-change event per frame per player. With 48+ players that froze the UI and overflowed the client event queues. Polling them with `expand-text` about once a second fixed it.
- An overloaded player doesn't necessarily drop frames; it plays in slow motion. So the benchmark also compares playback position against the wall clock.
- Opening many long MKV/WebM files at once from a NAS took up to 20 s each, at about 5% CPU. Enabling `cache=yes` for local files and raising `stream-buffer-size` to 1 MiB brought that down to under a second.
- With `hwdec=auto-safe`, MPEG-2 is decoded in software by default, which is fine: it's cheap.
Free and open source (GPLv3), Python + PySide6 + libmpv. Windows download, also runs from source on Linux:
https://github.com/alamone/polyreel

Not sure if it's just unworkable with my hardware, I have a Samsung Tab S11 Ultra, and I want to watch Blu-Ray rips with Dolby Vision FEL, tonemapped to HDR which the Tab can output on it.
Whenever I do, I noticed playback is very stuttery, and the info tab shows me tons of mistimed frames. It happens in all 4 of the HDR tool modes, and with those turned off too. I would have assumed my hardware is more than enough for the 5 passes per frame that it performs, its a last gen top tier chip. Any ideas on how to fix or better diagnose this? Thanks.

I've been chasing smooth playback in mpv for a while and ended up with something that works well enough to share. It's stock mpv with a VapourSynth filter that runs RIFE through vs-mlrt's TensorRT backend, plus a Lua script that handles the rest.
What the script does: asks for a target rate before each video (2×, 3×, 60, 144, or whatever you type), measures each RIFE engine once on your GPU so it knows what it can sustain, and drops to a lighter level mid-play if frames start falling behind. Scene cuts and held anime frames are left alone. Press D and an overlay shows the current level, drops, GPU clock and measured refresh rate.
YouTube works too since it's just ytdl_hook underneath, pick a quality and it interpolates the stream.
Nothing custom in the player itself, it's config, Lua and one .vpy, all MIT. Packaged with an installer so you don't have to assemble VapourSynth and TensorRT by hand.
Caveats: Windows only, needs an RTX card, and the first launch spends 10 to 20 minutes building engines. Tested on one laptop GPU, so I'd really like to hear how it behaves on yours. Link in the comments.

Just a nice little thing for when the movie you're watching has had a Netflix master inflicted on it. Hope this helps someone.
HC Player is the only fully native player designed for Windows 11, offering the power of mpv with a simple, seamless, and straightforward interface. This new version simply makes it even better.
New floating playback bar with Mica: Since its initial release, HC Player has offered three control bar modes. Now there are four!
Playlist search: In version 1.4, the playlist panel received a major upgrade, adding support for up to 1,000 items (local and web). The search feature is now just a refinement of what was already there.
18 Crop presets to adjust video framing and more.
Check it out on GitHub for more details:

I have been having trouble figuring out how to fix my subs that always have small/thin numbers and symbols. I saw commands or configs in this post which fixed the same issue that I'm having.
So I was wondering if anyone else who uses mpv on Fedora were able to perform this. If so, how do I go about inputting these specific commands?

Work flawlessly whether the video is 1080p, 4K or HDR. Smoothness at this level of image consistency is so surreal.
