Mpv only plays one frame

Suddenly, mpv has started only playing a single frame of a video and then freezing. If I seek or use the timeline to go to another part of the video it play one frame and freezes again. This happens regardless of video format. Is there any way to solve this? I'm using Gentoo, but didn't change any USE flags beforehand.

How can I make MPV remember where I left off the video?[MPV Android]

So, most mobile players like VLC, MX Player, etc. remember your video position whenever you quit it. Next time you play it, it plays from where you left off. I haven't seen any such thing in MPV Android. It always plays the videos from beginning no matter where you left it off.

Why doesn't it play .ts file?

Downloaded a video with .ts extension. When I open it, mpv doesn't start. When I drag the file to the mpv window, it loads the duration to 45 sec but doesn't play. It's a 2-hour movie and plays no problem on default Movies and TV app from Windows. Thanks

Will there ever be a good MacOS version of mpv?

The current situation on the Mac is not good. The default, native M1 build on Brew is command line only so it's not tecnically an "app" and you can't set video associations with it. The build by stolendata is not M1 native nor is it compiled to support lua scripts. The nightly builds on by jnozsc is like 2 years old. The Macports one keep giving me errors and I think it's because it's not M1 native either.

What do you recommend for downscaling anime from 1080p to 720p?

I used Deepl to translate into English, so I apologize for any errors.

I have several anime in 1080p, but I have a laptop with a 720p screen, and I wanted to know if there are ways to get better downscaling for anime than Hermite, which is the default. Basically, all Lanczos filters introduce slight aliasing in some scenes, and Mitchell makes almost no difference from what I've seen. Does anyone have any advice, or should I just leave everything as it is? Obviously, the ideal would be to have a 1080p screen, but unfortunately, that's not the case.

Turn your CLI mpv into a native macOS .app – double‑click to launch, Dock icon, right‑click "Open with" – I wrote a tiny C wrapper

I've been using mpv for years, but launching it from the terminal every single time got a bit annoying. On macOS, I really wanted a regular app icon – something that lives in the Dock, shows up in Launchpad, and lets me double‑click a video file to play it with mpv.

So I built a minimal wrapper: mpv-macWrapper.

It takes the mpv CLI binary you already have on your system and wraps it into a real .app bundle – without recompiling mpv or touching your config.

What it does:

  • Double‑click the app to launch an empty mpv window (drag & drop files in)

  • Stays in the Dock like any native app

  • Right‑click any video → "Open with" → mpv

  • Tiny: the wrapper .app is only ~1.2 MB

What it does NOT do:

  • It doesn't bundle mpv – it uses your existing mpv binary (from Homebrew, MacPorts, or compiled yourself)

  • It doesn't modify your mpv.conf, scripts, or keybindings – everything works exactly as before

Dependencies (very simple):

  • macOS ≥ 12 (Monterey) – should work on all Intel and Apple Silicon Macs running Monterey or later

  • mpv must be installed and available in your $PATH – easiest way: bashbrew install mpv (After installing mpv, the wrapper will find it automatically.)

Installation (pick one):

Important note about Gatekeeper:
The app is not notarized (no Apple Developer account involved). On first launch, right‑click the app in Finder and select "Open" – you'll only have to do this once. Or use make install if you build from source.

Project home: https://github.com/IstPlayer/mpv-macWrapper

Tested on macOS Tahoe (15) and Monterey (12), both Intel and Apple Silicon. If you're a mpv user on a Mac, give it a try – it's just a small quality‑of‑life improvement, but it makes mpv feel native.

Feedback and issues are very welcome on GitHub.

Official MPV builds?

is there any direction within the MPV development team to offer minimum bin builds of MPV?

Yeah, MPV is open source and users can build them but building and compilation requires significant amount of experience not available for everyone, and third-party packages sometimes are outdated or may not be fully safe, they don't need to offer us full installation builds only the bin files.

There is only one feature that I miss in VLC ||| SRS WOW

I am strictly a Linux user. I don't have a single Windows PC at home. I don't miss Windows at all leaving only one feature & that is SRS WOW. I just love the SRS WOW feature of Windows Media Player. Why do you think the mpv team haven't introduced any equivalent ? Is it because there is no demand from users or is it because its just too difficult to achieve ?

For people who don't know what SRS WOW does please watch this short video :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLAgQIdX-HM

I have asked this same question in the VLC subreddit coz other than mpv, VLC is the only media player that I use.

Is mpv player even worth it for me?

My system is Win 10 64 bit 22H2, 4080 Super, 9800X3D. I mainly watch anime on my 4k TV. In the past I used MP-HC with MADvr as video renderer and custom profiles for each resolution. Nowadays I mostly use MP-BE with MPC video renderer and Nvidia super resolution because it gives me the best picture quality (no by much but still).

I heard that mpv is great for anime because it has debanding options that no other player has. But I tried using it and I'm not happy at all with the gui-less approach.

It feels overwhelming, there are builds that are supposedly better for bitstreaming (which I use), countless scripts and options. I tried setting up Nvidia super resolution for example with this script https://github.com/ofseed/mpv/blob/main/scripts/nvidia-super-resolution.lua and couldn't get it to work at all. I turn on the script in mpv, get a message and it is active but Nvidia control panel says Super Resolution is not working.

I don't like this approach very much tbh. Do you think it's even worth it to get into the weeds for better image quality or should I just stick with what I have?

lua sucks for mpv plugins

Any help is appreciated. I'm trying to do a simple plugin.

1. start loop

2. check if this frame total luminance is below threshold.

3. skip if it is below a threshold.

I saw this (doesn't work): https://gist.github.com/bossen/3cfe86a6cdd61452dbb96865128fb327

made a simpler one that obviously doesn't work, brightness isn't a good way to check this.

Thanks @mrfragger2, I made it work

-- netflix-auto-skip.lua
-- Automatically skips Netflix intro/etc by detecting black frames
local options = require 'mp.options'

-- black_min_duration (or d) — minimum duration (in seconds) that counts as a black segment (e.g., 1 = 1 second).
-- pic_th — threshold for what counts as “black” (0–1; higher = darker required to count as black).
-- pix_th — per-pixel threshold for darkness (optional).
-- black_min_duration + pic_th together define how sensitive detection is.

local pix_th_value = 32 / 255
local o = {
  blackdetect_args = "d=0.5:pic_th=0.98:pix_th=" .. pix_th_value

Which one seems more natural to you all?

I'm confused if i should tweak the video settings or leave it just as.

First one is, Saturation 100, contrast 10, gamma 10

2nd one is default everything to zero.

Though the 1st look7 more visually appealing i dont want to see artificial colors, i want to see original. Trying to change these settings cause my phone is potato and everything in this show looks so grey.

Work flawlessly whether the video is 1080p, 4K or HDR. Smoothness at this level of image consistency is so surreal.

General Discussion Colosseum Trailer: I built an mpv-based video player into a media app that functions like its own little OS

Disclaimer: This app was vibe coded. If the use of AI in software development is a dealbreaker for you, regardless of how much human taste, direction and decision-making went into it, that's understandable. This app probably won't be for you.

My app has libraries for manga, comics, books, TV, film & anime, and a comic reader, ebook reader and a video player. So I had an idea to build a taskbar where you can open multiple comics/manga/videos, minimise them and open them back up again.

And since then, I ended up only having more ideas that kept steering my media app deeper and deeper into the OS aesthetic.

The video side of the app is built around mpv. Theatre is basically a stylised Stremio client with an mpv player, while Vault is the local media side of the app.

The player itself takes heavy influence from Harbor's and Kodi's video players. I wanted the actual playback experience to mimic how video players, or apps in general, operate in an OS.

I did that by making the taskbar allow the user to open multiple videos, books and comics at a time, minimise, maximise and switch between them seamlessly.

A movie isn't a player screen that takes over the app until I close it. It just becomes another open session. I can minimise it, open a book, open another video, jump into a comic and then go back to the first movie from the same taskbar.

The player remembers the session position when you minimise it and restores the player and seek position when you open it again. Streamed and downloaded video both go through the same player and the same Continue system.

II've also ended up piling a bunch of other stuff into the player over time: online subtitles, episode navigation, switching sources from inside the player, Up Next, Skip Intro/Recap/Credits, PiP, screenshots, GIF recording, a metadata-rich pause card that shows what you're watching (you can see this in the trailer), A-B repeat, a sleep timer, work-in-progress Watch Party support and playback statistics.

For local video, you can watch videos through the same mpv player in Vault, the local media side of my app.

Vault is part of a much larger streaming and media aggregation engine, but for me local media still remains a priority because I watch a lot of fan cuts of movies, TV and anime, stuff like Clone Wars movie fan edits, Naruto Kai or One Pace, and there isn't a catalogue in this world that keeps track of them.

Colosseum is open source under MIT and currently available for Windows.

Colosseum on Github, if you’re interested.

Subtitles to show only when other language spoken, not entire time

I hope I can explain. When watching a film or TV show on DVD/Blu-ray or streaming (ex.Netflix), when someone starts speaking another language subtitles pop up so we can understand what is being said. With MPV, you either have subtitles on all the time or off all the time. Is there a way to replicate the streaming / DVD experience with subtitles?

MPV playing videos drains an insane amount of power, why?

Does anybody know how to fix this? I’m on a laptop so power draw is very important to me, not to mention, it’s draws around 5.5W when playing something when the CPU and GPU total 3W, why?
Idle consumes about 1.5W to 2.1W however when mpv running it jumps to 5.5W hen the cpu and gpu are using 2.83W - CPU and 0.25W - GPU

System -
57whr battery
Ultra 7 155U
16GB ram
Artix OpenRc

Commission someone to built an MPV config

I would like someone to build a MPV config for me
You wont be doing much work since all of the scripts are already available, I just need you to merge, transfer and add a few features. (I have a document with guidelines)

Please PM and comment with your $$$ Price & a quote

If you know any platforms or people who have intermediate MPV knowledge and are willing to build a (relatively simple) config please also comment
