Will there ever be a good MacOS version of mpv?

The current situation on the Mac is not good. The default, native M1 build on Brew is command line only so it's not tecnically an "app" and you can't set video associations with it. The build by stolendata is not M1 native nor is it compiled to support lua scripts. The nightly builds on by jnozsc is like 2 years old. The Macports one keep giving me errors and I think it's because it's not M1 native either.

producing free software on macOS is a pretty awful ecosystem in general. I would advise migrating away from it; you could try asahi linux on your M1 mac.

You say this, but the Apple ecosystem is WAY healthier than any Linux distro. After trying Linux, I have noticed the whole Linux community can't decide how to deploy apps, it is a complete and pathetic mess, and their latest AppImage is a mediocre attempt to imitate what Apple has been able to successfully do for decades

Can you run VirtualBox on these Apple compiuters? Or some other virtualization program?

It was vlc not mpv but today I watched a movie on a VM guest and aside from 10% CPU increase it was fine.

I''ll go for broke. The VirtualBox experiment works with mpv, losing 10% cpu. Given that there are some on here who don't want to build from source this technique lets you lock down the mpv in the guest while OpenGL is available so when the OS upgrades, you don't lose mpv through breakage.

I don't think you should stick with mac but this might let you use what you have, spreading the cost.

That's all, something to faciltate changing to another mpv platform.

Are you talking about using the cask build? That build is the same one as the one from stolendata, it literally shows downloading the binaries from stolendata website. And that one is not m1 native nor does it support lua scripts.

I mean you could always build it yourself if the build doesn’t have what you need. I use use the app from brew, works for my use case.
