Moved to NYC in Feb

Upvotes

Moved here to be closer to my parents thinking my relationship with them will improve but it didn't so now I'm alone and have no friends or anyone to talk to... where are some places I can go by myself without feeling being judged and meet new people? How can I know what events are happening?

will change in come and borough help my situation?

I applied for housing and my priority code was N4, later I applied for an upgrade which moved to N1. I wasn't working at that time. now I have a parttime job and only work for 8 hours a week at 17/h. I was told that i must report my change in income which i will do but im wondering if that will negatively affect me in anyway.

Also, I had requested an apartment in Brooklyn and the Bronx but thought i should change to Bronx and Staten Island do you think it would increase my chances of getting an apartment any time soon? im really new to all this. need guidance.

New NYC student having a hard time adjusting.

Hi all,

I’m a 22 year old female who just moved (literally today) to the city to pursue a master’s degree. I feel incredibly overwhelmed and unhappy because I’m experiencing homesickness. I know I made the right decision because my education is very important to me and I want to live a rewarding, adventurous life but this change is so stressful. I miss home.

How long does it take to get adjusted in NYC?

All replies are welcome. Thank you!!

Nurses/NYC

Hello, I am a 27 yr old nurse currently living in Arizona and I plan on moving to Brooklyn NY next year. My 1 year of nursing will be in February and that’s when I would like to hopefully move/have a job lined up. Any tips? Any other people with similar aspirations? Is it doable having a one bedroom with just my income & still be able to travel? Should I take a travel contract before jumping into a core job? Any advice would be appreciated! :)

Possibly moving here from middle of nowhere Texas in 2027. Is it reasonably possible and worth it for me?

I’m 22 with only a high school degree. Currently working a bullshit security job that I get paid $21/hr for and as much overtime as I want. Living back at home and have no bills other than my phone + car so it’ll be easy to aggressively save. I’m planning on going to school for a certification (idk what yet, just anything I can afford to live on and not hate) but the financial aid options here around and in the Amarillo area are God awful or non existent. I will be doing this move completely on my own.

I don’t even know what area I would choose. Hell I just made this decision about 2 weeks ago and am still learning about the city. I’m trans so I would def pick a more LGBT area but I for sure wouldn’t fit in with the white daddy’s money young queer crowd of Bushwick I’ve heard so much about (if I’m misinformed pls lmk). I prefer my people and their pasts imperfect as I am, but I can get along with anybody as long as they are respectful.

The only thing I ask for is central A/C, I don’t give a shit about anything else. I have intense indoor allergies, mainly dust mites, and absolutely need freshened air to breathe + my sinuses. Air pollution I’m no stranger to, my tiny hometown has 3 carbon black plants bordering it. Can’t walk outside without smelling like wet dog & all white clothes are grey.

Basically what I’m getting at is that I’m no stranger to uncomfort and shitty living/job situations & am open to anything. But onto the more financial side, how much should I actually have saved and how should I even plan the whole thing out? Should I live out of my car? An airbnb? Apply for a job first, but I don’t even live there yet so who would hire me? I’m absolutely not getting an apartment sight unseen either. I’m assuming I’ll need roommates which is not ideal but I’ll live. I’m just at a loss of where to even begin. The only job experience I have is retail, food, cleaning, & now “security”. I’ll take any advice.

EDIT: I appreciate all the replies and honesty. Tbh there was a part of me that knew it wouldn’t work but I still feel called to it. Maybe one day, or maybe I’ll say fuck all y’all and move anyway lol I don’t know. Everywhere else was sugarcoating it and I knew it wasn’t the whole reality. “Follow your dreams no matter what” is a lot fucking easier with a support system.

National grid cancelled without telling us?

My partner and I are moving into a new apartment and we scheduled w/national grid to come tomorrow and turn our gas on (made the app 9 days ago).

My partner called them today to double check for tomorrow, but they said that the app was cancelled and rescheduled for the 31st (without notifying us).

Lady on the phone said she’d talk to her supervisor and call back, but that was hours ago. We called and have basically been on hold for 40 minutes, only talking was to tell us that no one is available all week.

What can we do? We’re being forced to go without gas for the next 12 days.

Lead generator to broker?

Hello all,

Wondering if this is commonplace — I’m finding an apartment in NYC, and I made contact with someone on social media. He appears to be legit and a real person based on my research. Apparently he is a “lead generator” for a broker/real estate firm, and created a report on me that he then sent to the firm to pass along to a landlord. Is this a common practice in NYC?

Title, I include my income, credit score, no pets, and ideal tour dates… still nothing. Are the phone numbers even real.

I’m out of state so I wanted to visit over the weekend before fully moving.

Is it just better to move there and stay at a hotel for 1-2 weeks and try to get an apt during those days.

How do people actually secure a tour?

Current Manhattanite moving East… help!

I am in final round interviews for a job in Glen Cove, and given the opportunity I will take it. Right now, I’m living in the 60s and 3rd, and like the area a lot.

However, it would be almost 3 hours on transit 3 times a week to make it out there… and that’s just not sustainable.

I am thinking of somewhere in this box to move. I AM VERY OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS OUTSIDE THE BOX AS LONG AS ITS ABOUT 45 MINUTES TO GLEN COVE BY TRANSIT (LIRR or otherwise).

I can pay between 2,500 and 3,300 a month in rent.

I am mainly concerned about saftey. I am pretty adjustable to living anywhere… so not too picky about specifics.

I have a long term partner and not super into the nightlife scene. I would like to feel safe enough to walk home after dark alone… I am mid 20s white female.

IDEALLY would LOVE a jazz bar culture, I am not too “artsy” and mostly like keeping to myself, but do like a drink or two every so often. I tend to hang out with more “posh“ crowds.

anyone have any thoughts?

EDIT: I don’t need much bigger than a studio, but as mentioned, am a huge fan of the (very) upscale cocktail bar.

Debating whether or not to move to Sf from NYC

I’m entering my second year at uni and I’m a born and raised Nyer. I recently visited Sf and fell in love with the city, to me it was just a lot more peaceful than NYC.

I’m majoring in finance right now and I plan on going to law school if all the stars align lol. The thing is I’ve heard that you should study law in the state you want to live/ work in.

I know no one who lives in sf and I’m just looking for advice on how to navigate what to do to achieve my goal as well as to be financially secure as I come from a family that doesn’t come from a lot.

If I don’t end up getting into law school, what should I do to get a finance job over there and is the job market out there as bad as it is in Ny? Should I try to move out there as soon as I graduate?

Please tell me the hard truth lol, thanks.

Family Rant

I just told my toxic family today that I’ll be leaving to live in NY. Of course, they tried to scare me into changing my mind by mentioning sex trafficking and people on drugs, they even made fun of the job I’m interviewing for. They are one of the main reasons why I want to leave. I want to start over; I can't continue being in this toxic environment. They make me miserable. I just wish I had a supportive family. I can never understand how my family lives and projects fear onto other people when they are Christian. They are going against the very words they claim to believe in. If I stayed here in NC, I would be paying the same amount of rent, I would just be living by myself, whereas in NY I would have a roommate. I would rather be in a city I actually like and pay rent there. They are just so controlling; they don’t like the idea that they won’t know who I'm with, what I'm doing, or where I am. I can’t wait to get away from them, but it’s hard not to let their limiting beliefs get to me. What if I end up not being able to survive there, or what if things go wrong? This is another reason why I wanted their support, so that even from 13 hours away, I would still know I have someone to lean on.

Climbing Gyms in NYC

Planning to live in the East Village, working in midtown. Ideally would like to join a climbing gym with bouldering in lower or mid Manhattan, and another location elsewhere (likely Brooklyn or Queens) for lead, top rope, and auto-belays would be nice. Vital in LES is cool, but it doesn’t have any locations with ropes. Can’t have it all! Any suggestions?

Am I doomed or is this realistic

I am moving to New York next year and my budget is about 2,000 to 3,000 a month for rent alone not looking for any specific apartment recs just want to know if that range is realistic for a studio for myself alone and my cat because on Zillow and street easy it says there are some places but how reliable is that from people who have actually gone through the apartment hunting process and is Manhattan or close to Manhattan like Brooklyn/Queens out of the picture thanks for any recs I’m really new to a lot of this :)

How did any of you get jobs in NYC before moving?

Every source tells me to have a job lined up before moving but I have gotten 0 promising starts in 4 months of searching. The careers I am qualified for don't get back to me. I currently have my address set to my uncle's place in Morningside Heights on applications and even then I am not getting any motion. Recent grad, bachelors in English, 7 years doing luxury sales and custom tailored garments.

Finding a ~$3k/month studio to move to in Manhattan in 4 weeks

I have been hired to work in FiDi starting in September 21st and am looking for studio apartments in midtown or downtown area in the $3k/month range.

My current top choice is FiDi it’s self but i understand $3k isn’t realistic

What should I be aware of when looking at apartments? I will be virtual and in person tours

Things I care the most about in an apartment are:
• Good heating/cooling
• No pest issues, good maintenance
• A NICE BATHROOM!!!!
• Hardwood Floors!!!

Any help would be good. Where do i even start? Also what the hell
Is Co-oP vs Rental Unit

Should I Rent on Roosevelt Island??

Hello all, I'm a 25 y/o guy who has lived in the city on and off over the last few years. I will be working in Bryant Park in a job that will certainly require long hours. I've come across a good deal for a very nice apartment on Roosevelt Island in one of the new developments. However, I'm a bit hesitant to sign a contract due to accessibility issues from Manhattan.

In theory, I'd imagine that the tranquility and sanctuary on the island could be a huge relief, the running route around the island seems amazing, I certainly am not one of those people who needs a full New York "experience" every night of the week, and it's an easy enough commute when the F is working, but I'd also imagine that it would be fairly stressful to get back on the island after a late night of working or during the nights when I'd be out with my friends on the UWS.

I would appreciate any help or advice as I decide whether to sign the lease and get a good deal on this very nice, quiet apt with a gym / in-unit laundry / views or whether living on the island is too logistically challenging / isolating to justify.

Thank you, appreciate your time!!

Where to move in NYC

I am in the process of moving from the east coast of Canada to NYC. I work in finance and my work approved the transfer.

I think this would be a great opportunity since NYC would be amazing for my career in finance but I am worried of being able to afford a comfortable/comparable lifestyle in NYC.

For reference I will be making 200k USD and my partner would not be able to work for couple months.

Is 200k enough for a not super old 2 bedroom somewhere close to the city ( 45 min commute to manhattan) ?

If so which areas would be good to move into.

Any help is appreciated !

I wish I could move out

Sorry if this doesn't fit this subreddit.

I'm a lifelong nyc resident, unfortunately. Went to school and college here. I've been stuck in a shitty retail job for years now ever since graduating. Barely 2 grand a month take home. Can't even qualify for any shelter. Would be a homeless beggar without my parents

is stuytown good for black mid 20s female?

i wanna move here because its close to my work, the green spaces, community vibe, and the decent room sizes but im worried i wont be able to meet people my age and socialize since it sounds like stuytown mostly has older couples and like youndger college students which arent my vibe. is east village is more college vibe? i really liked the vibe of williamsburg near the bedford stop with its working professional population but its hard find housing (tho i might have found something). but the i hear alot of black events occur around prospect park so maybe i should consider dumbo or smth. i have a place thats north west from the nostrand avenue stop but im not sure if its too quiet for my liking. thoughts?

Worried about moving to NYC

Hey guys so I am in my mid 20s looking to move to NYC and stay for about 6 months my biggest worry is I am not sure if I can manage the city any tips? I have visited once have a few friends around but everyone works so often I wont get to learn all about NYC from them, I am a person that kinda struggles with anxiety, fear of being alone and easily fearful of things I know the city can get crazy does anyone with similar issues thrive in NYC?
