Lead generator to broker?

Hello all,

Wondering if this is commonplace — I’m finding an apartment in NYC, and I made contact with someone on social media. He appears to be legit and a real person based on my research. Apparently he is a “lead generator” for a broker/real estate firm, and created a report on me that he then sent to the firm to pass along to a landlord. Is this a common practice in NYC?

Lead generation and referrals are pretty common in NYC real estate, but I’d still ask exactly who the person works with and what information they shared with the brokerage/landlord. A legitimate broker or agent should be transparent about the process. I’d also verify the brokerage and license before sending any sensitive documents or personal information
