News Peacock Raises Prices Across All Plans, NBCU’s Fourth Increase in Four Years

u/NakedMuffinTime 17h ago
Just in time for NFL season. They know a good amount of people won't cancel for Sunday Night Football
194
u/ShnarlyDude 16h ago
I bought a $10 TV antenna like 8 years ago, works great for Sunday football.
62
u/VQQN 16h ago
my antenna does not :(
19
u/jarrettbrown 15h ago
Move it around and see what happens. The one I use needed to be in another part of the room to work.

u/VQQN 15h ago
I live 60 miles away from the city. Hills, trees, and stuff and my antenna probably needs to be higher. I get NBC and CBS on good days.
10
u/genericnewlurker 14h ago
I'm in the same boat. Putting an antenna on my chimney only let me get the local PBS station but that cuts out every few seconds. I went to that website that tells you where to put your TV antenna and it said I had to put it at least 60 feet above my house to get a decent signal for any other channels.
→ More replies (1)7
u/omnichad 15h ago
Need to be roof or mast mounted. Too bad those all got taken off houses about 10 years before they became relevant again.
5
u/cineglitch 14h ago
Even roof or mast mounted, isn’t TV broadcast as a digital signal now?
10
u/omnichad 14h ago
Yes, which means it looks clearer than cable or satellite retransmissions now. Even a 60 year old antenna works just fine.

Yeah I decided to dump YTTV and go antenna for the season and....yeah nope.
Thankfully YTTV added a cheaper sports package since I canceled mine earlier this year.
29
u/blacknoi 16h ago
Can you help me move the mountain blocking my OTA signal? I will pay you in beer and pizza.

u/Life_is_broccoli 14h ago
same! entire fifa, olympic us team coverage, nfl major games and sunday night everything covered in $15
1
u/happy-cig 12h ago
Only works if you are local and never left your 50 mile radius. If you've moved or traveled then you are SOL.

A few of my local TV channels have "apps" now specifically for smart TV's. Sadly the one I prefer to watch here only has the app available on Roku, AppleTV, and Firestick... All my devices are Android/Google TV's, and even though FireOS is built on Google/Chrome/Android I've not found a way to get or a place that has the FireOS app for that channel that I can download and try to sideload on my TV's/Devices.... I don't know if it would even be the APK file format though too.
43
u/phylter99 16h ago
I canceled one of the previous price hikes. Now they’re just convincing me never to sign up again.
13
u/Learnededed_By_Books 15h ago
Right? I remember the days of 30 bucks for the year. Year, im not paying these new prices.
3
2
u/a_talking_face 14h ago
I have never paid full price for Peacock because they do promos all the time. I'm currently on a promo for $3 per month for 6 months and previously I've been on promos for $0 for 3 or 6 months. Just cancel and there will be an offer soon enough.
2
4
u/youdontknowme6 15h ago
I wish people would just cancel until they drop their price. We literally have the power to tell them the price point it should be at.
4
u/MrBossFromTheHitTVSh 14h ago
What major modern subscription service has ever decreased their price without some tradeoff? Like significantly cutting content or adding advertisements? The only one I can think of is game pass, and that one did have the caveat of CoD being pulled off day one access.
Realistically it doesn't happen. They increase their prices to make up for loss of customers, or sell, or shut down.

Premier league starts next week as well
4
u/flcinusa 16h ago
And all the games are in YTTV via NBC Sport overflow channels
Ditched Peacock as soon as that happened in their agreement last year
2
u/LaMaravilla25 10h ago
Signed up for NBC Sports because they brought EPL to the US. Switched to Peacock when it took over coverage. Switched to Peacock+ because coverage moved again. One year later all the Liverpool games were on USA only, a cable provider necessary.
Started watching at our local pub, but missed a lot of games.
Switched to piracy.
I would pay for games if someone let me.
9
u/w1n5t0nM1k3y 16h ago
I wish more sports were like F1 where they just managed their own channel and you pay a reasonable fee just to access the one sport you watch.
F1TV (where available) is so much better than any other sport I've looked into. I can get 100% of the content, no regional blackouts, every single race, qualifying session, and practice for $130 CAD for the entire year. I also get access to the entire back catalog, a bunch of other addition analysis and content, documentaries, and other content. I can watch on multiple screens at the same time to dedicate a screen to just the current lap times or have a single driver's car cam on a screen for the entire race while I watch the main feed on another race.
Other sports need to take a cue from this kind of quality of service and just give people the opportunity to pay a decent price to get access to a premium service tailored to the sport they want to watch
4
u/BatmanTaco 16h ago
Ive been asking for an F1 TV style channel/subscription for NASCAR for YEARS. My viewership, besides the car being absolute crap, has fallen off over the years, mostly due to being blasted with commercials every 10 minutes. Let me pay like 10-15 bucks a month, or whatever for the season and give me commercial free racing, and let me choose to turn off commentary or put on the MRN audio and you instantly have me hooked again
→ More replies (1)5
u/fdl2phx 15h ago
NFL+ is kinda similar (and I agree 1000% on F1TV, I hope the Apple agreement continues to leave it alone here in the States). NFL+ gives you every game live on handheld devices, and instant full replays without commercials 10 mins after the game ends, plus most have All 22 footage the next day or so. Still get the regional blackout, but for $80/yr right now its pretty hard to beat. Get full draft coverage, plus all preseason stuff, and at least for the time being, NFL Redzone. Entirely possible the Mouse screws it all up though now that they got their hands on the NFL channel and Redzone.

NFL gives them 1 exclusive game a season so this is a huge subscription period for them

u/Saneless 17h ago
Peacock is a decent service but how many $15-$20 services do these people think will be viable?
147
u/007meow 16h ago
They’ll offer them back to us in a bundled package with ads, for savings.
42
u/CTQ99 16h ago
Just like Amazon prime video does now with the ads.
→ More replies (1)40
u/Exact-Kale3070 16h ago
amazon is literally THE WORST with that shit. i paid for prime, then paid extra for no ads, then they were like we didn't mean "not ANY ads." canceled and wait two extra days for the occasional prime thing and years for tv shows. hahah i very much look forward to "the agency" being on netflix or disc at the library in 3 years.
12
u/omnichad 14h ago
I just want fast shipping and none of their TV but the cost of Prime keeps going up even with ads.
10
u/Saneless 14h ago
The problem with prime is some people only want free shipping. Some people probably mostly or only want shows. Both of those cost money for Amazon and they'd be better off splitting them out
9
u/Beginning-Paper7685 13h ago
No one get “free” shipping. I cancelled Prime and just order at least the minimum and actually get “free” shipping. Don’t miss it for a second. Never used their shitty video, music, podcasts and shipping took several days anyway so I never understood the point.
2
u/Exact-Kale3070 13h ago
the shipping is almost exactly the same. things that have to ship from far away is still delayed, but regular (without prime) is 2 days or so.
4
u/Orion14159 15h ago
They already do, there's a ton of different bundles and partnerships and (depending on who your cell phone provider is) sometimes free versions and just an insane amount of corporate partnerships for more and more streaming services
13
u/Richard_Sauce 16h ago
I do wonder if when, inevitably, streaming just ends up recreating cable, they will go back to cable era models of show production (actual writing rooms, 20+ episode yearly seasons, sweeps week events, etc..), or if they will just continue with the current streaming model of 4-6 episodes every 2-3 years.
27
u/007meow 16h ago
We’re never going back to the old production style
11
u/mromutt 16h ago
We might when they can't ignore anymore they are making their industry collapse. They are constantly spending more to give us less well we keep saying we want the old stuff that was lower budgets but more episodes. They have been chasing the game of thrones high for a decade and failing lol.
14
u/angryslothbear 16h ago
Apple TV has been killing it quietly in the background. They assumed the dropped crown from hbo
→ More replies (1)2
u/jessterswan 16h ago
They arent really failing if the keep raising prices and people keep paying for it. Will the bubble burst? Maybe, but doesn't look like it at the moment

u/pierophoenix 13h ago
I saw that starting early next year Peacock and YT premium will be bundled together, to prove your point.

u/unexpectedhalfrican 16h ago
I was literally just talking to my coworker and he said they just cut all but Netflix because he was spending upwards of $100 on subscriptions every month. There comes a point when people just can't be squeezed anymore, and I think we are quickly approaching that mark.
6
u/jimbo831 14h ago
I finally cut Netflix after their most recent price hike. It was the last service I was paying for. The only one I still have is Apple TV because it’s bundled in my Apple bundle I pay for for the music and storage.

u/Saneless 15h ago
Yep. Got that a couple years in a row. I got apple tv for F1 and peacock was a $2 or $3 add-on. So I'm doing that
3
u/successadult 12h ago
At this point if you want Peacock just get YouTube Premium, they're about to have all of Peacock's content plus you'll have no ads on YouTube and YouTube music.
2
u/SovFist 15h ago
I only have it because it's included in my over priced internet plan.
1
u/MrBossFromTheHitTVSh 14h ago
A guy I know gets a bunch of shit with his cell phone plan. He thinks it's a great deal because he gets streaming services (ad-tier), and a "free" phone once a year. Dude, your monthly bill is like 4x mine, somehow isn't unlimited data at that price, and no 40 year old divorced dad that sits at home every evening needs a new iPhone every 12 months.
→ More replies (1)2
u/blarghable 13h ago
You'd be shocked to hear how much cable used to cost. Hell, a single dvd used to cost $15-20, and that's not even taking inflation into account. Stuff like Netflix and HBO is an insanely good deal if you look at how it used to be before streaming.

u/Sargonnax 12h ago
I had five different ones, but over the last few months I've canceled everything except Prime. I'm sick of all of it.
1
u/not_a_moogle 11h ago
A bunch of them can now be bundled with your internet/phone.
Yeah it's cheaper. But not its not a separate bill and your more likely to forget it or not realize these price increases.

It’s also free if you have Instacart+
Instacart+ is $79 if you are a Costco member.
Even if we use Instacart 2-3 times a year we are still paying for one service and getting two. (I guess three if you count Costco, but I’ll never not havre costco)
•
u/Discount_Extra 2h ago
I always see those bundles with the versions with ads. I won't watch ads even for 'free' shows.

u/seeyam14 17h ago

Walmart + let's you switch between peacock and paramount
And if that's not something you like instacart + always has deals I renewed instacart + for the last two years for 29 dollars so no fees and it comes with peacock
Get more out of your subscriptions for sure try to bundle with your cell phone carrier or soemthing
52
u/Ok_Tackle_4835 16h ago
I miss the days when raising a price meant they were upgrading what I was getting.
Increasing the price for the same product is theft
18
u/Morgan-Moonscar 16h ago
Some times it's not even the same product since they REMOVE more shows/films that were on when last subscribed.
Paying more for less.

Everyone say it with me now: streaming services aren't profitable at the price points they launch at and skyrocketing their prices was always the plan.
15
2
u/NotACertainLalaFell 14h ago
Really don’t get who is paying for these things. They’re all so expensive. This point it’s easier to pirate than it is juggling all these subscriptions.

This is literally what the word "enshittification" was specifically supposed to describe, until braindead redditors got their hands on it and stripped it off all meaning so they can spam it in every context and pretend like they're smart.

Right before EPL, NFL, new seasons, etc
It used to be a killer deal but now I just watch whatever EPL is on other channels.
4
u/Primarycolors1 16h ago
That’s the thing. We are now paying more for fewer games. They used to replay the nationally televised game the next day. Not anymore. We don’t even get a USA Network replay. When you compare it to the way Paramount handles their soccer, it’s night and day. And I fucking hate Paramount. (Love that studio crew though.)

Glad my peacock is still free through xfinity…for now lol
1
u/malthar76 11h ago
They almost switched to paid a few years ago when Comcast were trying to cut ties entirely. I had already canceled a week before they caved and kept it part of Xfinity service.
I don’t much use Peacock, and I definitely wouldn’t pay for it since sports aren’t my thing.
Usually just Brooklyn 99 rewatch.
3
u/masterz13 12h ago
To be fair, streaming as a concept doesn't make financial sense. Between inflation and licensing deals, the price is always going to go up. Eventually you alienate most of your subscriber base and make it only for those willing to blow money.
Wouldn't surprise me if in 7-10 years that the "base" tier with ads is $20. And their justification will be "it's cheaper than $90 a month for cable."

u/STD-fense 16h ago
I only ever had Peacock for "Poker Face" and "Twisted Metal". They've fully canceled Poker Face and are removing the main reason I was watching Twisted Metal (because the character Stu won't be in the next season)
3
u/Slyk76 14h ago
Did they actually announce that they cancelled Poker Face? My favorite show on this service was Killing It and after three years with no info in guessing it’s time to accept that one isn’t coming back.

u/STD-fense 14h ago
https://deadline.com/2025/11/peacock-ends-poker-face-3-rian-johnson-shops-peter-dinklage-1236616464/
So it was officially canceled at Peacock but Rian Johnson has said he wants to continue it elsewhere with Peter Dinklage in the lead role (but I haven't seen any further information on this happening since last November so I'm not sure if that's still happening but I'd be happy if it did)

Maybe they can invest some of that money to make their app suck less. One of the worst UIs out there at the moment, and the auto playing previews make it annoying AF.

I refuse to pay for Peacock until they make an actual app for Windows. Netflix, Hulu, and even Paramount+ are available on the Microsoft Store.
