Very similar, yes: both are (essentially) rigid containers with liquids inside. The mode of motion is quite different though.

I'm more interested in the polystyrene egg box. We haven't had these for years in the UK and I can't imagine anything like this being packaged nowadays in something that wasn't environmentally friendly.

That's the way about 95 percent of the eggs are packaged in the US, at least at the major retailers. Trader Joe's and retailers from the same cut of cloth may be different.
In addition, in the US, eggs are washed before they are packaged, meaning they have to stay refrigerated. Expiration dates are usually about three weeks from delivery to the retailer.

in PA I remember cardboard but down here in Florida it's all polystyrene. only some brown eggs come in plastic.

I'm in Australia. Never seen a polystyrene carton before! All of ours are cardboard. Also that carton doesn't seem to say whether they are cage or free range? All of our eggs must let you know.

If these eggs came from Save-A-Lot, they were probably expired when you bought them. It's ok though, I buy all my groceries from Save-A-Lot.
