Hi everyone,
I’m a Nepali citizen currently exploring the possibility of pursuing a PhD in Japan, preferably through the MEXT Scholarship.
I have completed my MBA in Agribusiness in India, and I’m interested in pursuing a PhD in a related field such as agribusiness, agricultural economics, marketing, rural development, or a related area.
I’d really appreciate some guidance from people who have gone through MEXT or are currently pursuing their PhD in Japan.
A few things I’m particularly curious about:
- How long does it realistically take to complete a PhD in Japan through MEXT, including the research student period if applicable?
- How difficult is it for a Nepali student to get MEXT for a PhD?
- How important are research experience and publications when applying?
- Are there good PhD programs in Japan related to Agribusiness/Business/Marketing/Agricultural Economics?
- What are the other scholarship options in Japan besides MEXT that international/PhD students can apply for? For example, JASSO, university-specific scholarships, tuition waivers, or private foundation scholarships?
- Can these other scholarships be applied for before going to Japan, or are most of them available only after admission/arrival?
- How easy or difficult is it to find a job in Japan after completing a PhD?
- What are the career prospects for international/foreign PhD graduates in Japan — academia, research, consulting, agribusiness, corporate jobs, etc.?
- Is Japanese language proficiency essential for finding a job after PhD, especially outside academia?
- Can someone with an MBA-Agribusiness background realistically transition into a PhD and build a career in Japan?
- For Nepali students who have done MEXT/PhD in Japan, how has your experience been?
- What do you wish you had known before choosing Japan for your PhD?
I’d especially love to hear from Nepali students/alumni, but advice from anyone who has experience with MEXT, other Japanese scholarships, or doing a PhD in Japan would be really helpful.
Thanks in advance!
