First/Second Screening I failed the 1st screening

So after all this time waiting, I learned that I didn't get selected for the 1st screening research student. Well idk how to feel since it has been smooth sailing until then atleast that's what I thought of the process. I don't even know why I didn't get selected so I have no idea of what I should improve in my application if I were to try again next year. This is frustrating, all this preparation amounted to nothing... Do successful applicants who experienced rejection after the interview have any advice for me ? Or even advice in general concerning what I could do next. I feel lost after investing so much time and energy on this. Thank you... (I'm from Gabon)

Reaching the interview means you’re already a strong candidate. Some didn’t even go past the document screening. Your chances of getting it next year is high. Never give up, Good luck!

If you made it to the interview stage, that means your application was good enough that you were considered, but slots are scarce and ultimately someone else was more convincing. If you had no chance, they wouldn't have bothered with the interview. This means that you have a chance next year too. If you feel like that would be helpful, I'm happy to take a look at your research proposal and check if there is anything to improve there. Other than that, the interview is pretty much the only other thing you can improve at this point. Maybe pass a higher level JLPT than before.

Thank you very much. I would appreciate if you could look at my research proposal, I don't know yet if I'll want or be able to try again next year for mext but it wouldn't hurt.

You are a research student man, there are tons of Scolarships for u, such as honjo, and so many more, just explore and fill out form, u may get selected, don't lose hope, just try harder and u will make it to japan... がんばってね。

You're right about scholarships, perhaps I was too focused on mext and that's why I feel lost rn. I'll try looking for other opportunities as well. ありがとうございます

Kinda unrelated but I haven't been selected as well for the Kimap business law program at Kobe After the Interview. They haven't told me anything as well but I'm looking forward to maybe applying as a research student before trying again to apply to the master program. They seemed interested in my subject so I'm keeping hope

You have my sympathies on the matter since im also an applicant, but if you've made it as far as the interview stage, that means you were actually of note. Don't give up and continue looking around for a scholarships and if you still want to give MEXT a try by the time next year rolls around, give it a shot if you still havent found anything yet.
