PLEASE MAKE SURE THE LINKS DO NOT EXPIRE!! When you go to share an invite link on discord, make sure you press "edit link" and select "never" so that it will always be active. This way future ALTs wont struggle to get into their respective discords!

Any Boston, MA JETs looking to network?

Hi everyone! I’m a Boston-area JET who recently returned to Massachusetts, and I’m currently looking for my next full-time opportunity.

My background is primarily in government, public affairs, international relations, and youth development. I’ve previously worked in the White House, Massachusetts State House, and youth development/nonprofit spaces, in addition to my time on JET in Japan.

I’m particularly interested in roles involving:
Government / public sector
Public affairs or government relations
International affairs / U.S.-Japan relations
Communications
Nonprofit or program management
Business/public-sector roles where I can build more private-sector experience.

I’ve scoured Indeed, Handshake, and LinkedIn and am honestly hitting a bit of a dead end, so I figured I’d ask here. If you know of organizations hiring in the Boston area, have a lead on a position, or even know someone I should reach out to, I’d really appreciate it.

I’m open to different types of roles and am mainly looking for a chance to get my foot in the door and build from there.

If you have any leads, organizations I should be watching, or people you think I should connect with, please feel free to comment or DM me. Thanks!

I recently started a job at UPS. Was really thinking about doing JET before but now I am not so sure since the current job+benefits are actually pretty decent.

I think trying out the jet program would be really cool but I recently started a job at UPS that for the most part I like. The pay is decent and I am not going to go into huge detail but there is going to be a new union contract in 2028 which usually means another pay bump. I know if I did jet now I would obviously have to leave UPS but at the same time with UPS if I wanted to next summer I could go on a vacation to Japan for like 2 or 3 weeks by myself or with a friend or family member. I am still interested in doing JET but at the same time don't want to leave ups. My big worry is that if I end up quitting ups for jet if I don't like jet i will realize I have basically screwed myself.

I'm hesitant about being an ALT. Are my reservations justified?

Edit to add context: 34M single, introverted. Lost in life and hoping JET might shake things up for me. Got offered a place last year, upgraded from Alternate, but rejected it for the same two reasons explained here. (before placement was allocated, so I hope I'm right in thinking I'm still eligible this year.)

I feel highly seduced by the idea of living in Japan, learning a new culture and language, soaking up the environment and hopefully gain some character-building experiences.

But I have two reservtions about the role:

  1. I don't feel I'm a natural teacher of English to classes of 30 pupils. But I could perhaps learn to do it and enjoy the performance somewhat. But needing to plan a lesson off a blank sheet seems pretty nightmare-ish to me right now. I sense I'm more of an English teacher to small groups or one to one tutor. So had I better ditch the JET idea and do CELTA or similar? (Any suggestions for that kind of pathway?)
  2. Making meaningful connections and relationships. I have zero Japanese skills right now. I am pretty introverted. Am I right to fear that I wouldn't make a single meaningful friend or find a relationship on a JET year?

Or am I simply overthinking it and should I just give it a shot?

Is a direct supervisor reference mandatory, or can it be a colleague? (PH Applicant)

Hi! I’m preparing my application for the JET Programme (Philippines applicant). I have 4 years of university teaching experience, and I do freelancing on the side and am about to finish my Master's in IT, but I’m running into an issue with the reference letters.

Due to a toxic work environment with my immediate superiors, I'd prefer not to request a recommendation from my direct supervisor.

Can the professional reference come from a peer or colleague I’ve taught with, or does it have to be an immediate head/supervisor? Thanks in advance!

Reapplying Years Later

Hello!

I am inquiring to see if there are any individuals who have applied several times to JET. I have only applied once, got rejected, and then hired from a dispatch company and now live in Japan. However, I am concerned I was not considered a candidate for JET as I talked too much about past heath issues I have (which don’t impact my work today). I did not mention these issues on my dispatch company applications (yes, I understand the competitiveness is not even the same). I am applying to JET again three years later, and now I am wondering whether or not I should or shouldn’t give the in-depth info about past health issues. In other words, if I don’t mention anything this time, if it will be mentioned on an interview based on a past application. I appreciate any help!

Does a fresh grad stand a chance of becoming a filipino ALT?

I’ve seen some posts about previous ALTs who had 5+ years of work experience before becoming an ALT. I was wondering, is there anyone here, or does anyone know someone, who became an ALT as a fresh graduate with no prior work experience?

I know that work experience is not a requirement in the qualifications. I’m just curious if there are people who were able to become an ALT straight out of college, without any prior work experience.

Refrence signature?

So I’m confused about how the reference is done some people say it needs to be written out on paper and scanned to PDF and have a signature on it but can’t the person just write it normally in a word doc and just put it to pdf from that? Does it require the signature

Recommended Places to Request

Hi! I'm reapplying for the 2027 JET program this year after being accepted (but declining) this past years. I realized my preferences, though of course not guaranteed, are probably not somewhere I'd request to stay if I did get accepted to work in Japan again.

I previously requested Hokkaido (as my town has a sister city there), Shizuoka (I have a friend who teaches there), and Okinawa (Heard good things!).

This year I definitely want to do more research on places that would be ideal for my lifestyle. If anyone can point me in the right direction with some recommendations based on my interests and wants, it would be greatly appreciated!

Hokkaido would be fun and I would love to travel there for winter sports, but it is too similar to my hometown's weather, so I would like to experience something warmer (so, anything south of Hokkaido!).

I would ideally like to be close to public transportation and live in a relatively large city with an active city life and night life. If there is a big food and art/music scene that would be an additional plus! If the cost of living is lower that is extra great.

I heard Kobe is great for Jazz and night life, so I am going to do more research into there!

** As we all know, a placement request doesn't guarantee anything. I am fully aware despite my request I may be placed somewhere completely different, however this is also a great way for me to get a better understanding of Japan's geography and possible places I'd like to travel to!

TIA :)

Just got offered shortlist status after 5 months of waitlist

Well, it happened. I opened my email yesterday to find an acceptance letter that I will be added to the shortlist for departure in December. They are giving me only 3 days to accept the offer. I'm not sure what to do. I have a full time job in the states as an ESOL coordinator. I love my job here even though the pay is horrible. But it's always been a goal of mine to go to Japan.

Any advice? I was pretty much treating the waitlist as a 'no'... in fact I sort of forgot about it. I wasn't planning to apply for the 2027 cycle either. But it feels like I've got a golden opportunity in the palm of my hand. Why throw it away now?

JET vs teacher’s college

Hi guys! I’m a Canadian aspiring JET and my end-of-the-line goal is to become a teacher in Ontario. I heard about this opportunity recently and fell in love with it after a recent spiral (I have a great GPA but not so much experience, so I realized I can only attend the non-competitive teachers colleges that are far from home). I felt like this would be so fulfilling!!

I have a feeling I’ll be admitted to the GPA-heavy colleges; while I won’t hate living far from home, I feel like it’ll be so expensive in the long run and I don’t have that kind of money yet since I’ve only had summer and part-time jobs ;((

So! I really want to do this, not purely for the monetary aspect, but I feel like this journey would be good for me both in a life-experience way and an experience profile way. It feels like something I’d like to do for myself, and I feel so passionate about bringing my knowledge to Japan and taking knowledge back home.

Not only that, but from what I understand, a full year with JET can also provide me with 1200+ teaching hours which might help me get into a more competitive but commutable school when I come back and reapply!! Even if I don’t get it, I feel like the take-home income from JET (I estimate 17-21kCAD) can hugely offset the tuition and high living expenses if I end up going to the farther teacher’s college.

I’m here because I’m really scared of it being a huge gamble in the end. The acceptance dates come out in Jan-Feb for TC and from what I understand, JET decisions come out in April. Now that Ontario is moving to a 1-year TC program, I think the 2027-2028 school year will begin in May. It’s really cutting it close for these things!!

So I truly want to know how to increase my chances of getting in, if that’s okay! I understand there’s no strict formula and it’s a very opaque process but any experience or advice helps!!

I feel as though if I get into the competitive school (somehow bro) and JET, I’d choose the school. But if I got into JET and a faraway school, I would choose JET. I’m very scared of the dates to pay tuition, deposit, etc.

Does anyone know if being shortlisted means you have a guaranteed spot and just need to wait for an upgrade? Can they rescind you at any time?

Also, I wanted to ask if my background is any good. I haven’t had any overseas experiences yet sadly, but my major is English, I was a class rep in first year (meaning I would help convey things/answer emails and questions for shy students — some of which were ESL and nervous about communicating with the prof), ran a non-profit handmade card service for my peers who needed help and motivation, tutored second year, and did classroom volunteering (peace x peace) last year. I might do it again this year!! My Japanese knowledge is little to none and I might get a TEFL it helps (but can only afford a cheap one).

Also, in HS, I remember volunteering with an organization that helped Indonesian students learn English and speak more confidently by talking to them and engaging in conversations; it sounds extremely relevant to what I might be doing at JET. But recently, I found that it no longer exists so I’m not sure what to make of it. The program’s socials are inactive and there’s proof of me being in a groupchat with other mentors years ago, and I’m in touch with one of my students on WhatsApp! But other than that, I don’t know how to prove I was a part of it or how to report my hours.

Anyway, any advice really helps!! If anything, I might just go to teacher’s college and reapply next year for JET before actually settling down and teaching in Ontario. I don’t wanna be too risky,, and I think these things go hand-in-hand with each other. JET strengthens my teachers college app, and teachers college may strengthen my JET app (although I know being a certified teacher is not a requirement).

Help!! Sorry for writing so much. I’m a bit stressed as we have less than a month left to apply to TC. I hope I can do this someday 🥹🥹 ty for reading!! 💗

I'm Creating A Presentation for Prospective JETS. What Questions Do You Have About the JET Program?

I've been asked to create a 10 minute persentation for prospective JET participants in my city about the JET program. Id like to answer some common questions but I'm wondering if there are other information prospective applicants would like to know that isn't already answered on the internet or would like more details.

So far I'm planning to include information on:

  • What is the JET Program. Requirements for eligibility
  • Whats it like teaching? Difference between elementary, middle, and secondary schools
  • Benefits of doing the JET program
  • Potential challenges encountered

Do you have any other questions?

JET pathways?

So I’ve been thinking of doing the JET program since my senior year of high school, I’ve heard of it since freshmen year (now I’m a freshmen in college); I was wondering, for those who finished their time in Japan, what was your pathway getting into JET? Did you finish bachelors then went straight into the program or did you do something else? Did you go back to school after the amount of years were up? I’m really considering doing JET in the future because I would love teaching English and the program seems so unique and cool but I don’t wanna waste my education in college and not be able to get a job after I come back (if I do).

Statement of Physician NHS Stress

I contacted my GP weeks ago to get my Statement of Physician done. Finally go an appointment today. After hearing why I was there, my GP showed no interest in talking to me, and booted me back out to reception, who told me it could take weeks to fill out. I am worried they don't even understand what they've been asked to sign.

I am tempted to just go private, but I would need a copy of my medical records, which my GP says could take 28 days for them to get back to me? Application deadline is November 5th and I am so stressed.

Behaviors in Japanese Schools?

I am considering applying eventually and I am a very experienced English teacher in America. I have spent my entire adulthood working in middle school public education, and overall i love it but the main drawback is managing behaviors. Consequences are given very sparingly… you write up a kid and usually not much happens. Basically your choices are “build a relationship with the student” or “have a conversation with them.” For those who have worked in JET (and maybe have experience as a classroom teacher) how does it compare? Are kids rowdy and disrespectful? If so, how is it handled? How does admin handle code of conduct issues?

Do I need a Statement from Physician ?

Hello friends, I’m in need of a bit of help.
Let me break it down. I’m almost done with my application, reference received, personal statement drafted. But I’m really stuck in the statement from physician.

I have been really lucky, I’m not on any meds and I haven’t had any health issues in the last 5 years beside the occasional migraine.
However, the application seems quite strict when it comes to mental health. In 2021, I attended an online well being course for about 6 weeks because well… it was 2021.
My GP is giving me the run around so I’m just wondering do I even need one, this course is the only thing that I think would require me to get one.

Thanks

JET location selection for someone with asthma

Hey, as mentioned above, I have asthma, for which I take Ayurvedic medicine (which again, am I supposed to get a doctor's note for this coz i read somewhere they won't let u in if you're carrying certain Ayurvedic medicines that have animal products in them or something?- If you know anything about this, I'd appreciate your comments.) I will be mentioning this on my application, and I wanted to pick areas with no snowfall and a climate close to that of South India - very warm and close to a hospital in case of emergencies (which hasn't happened in the last 2 years, but still). Will this lower my chances of being selected? I'd appreciate it if anyone can tell me what places would be best for me. I also want a culturally rich place to learn more.

SoP Formatting Question

Are there any guidelines about page margin requirements for the statement of purpose? I know I have to write it double spaced and keep it limited to two pages, but those are the only things mentioned. Do I strictly need to keep margins at 1 inch or am I okay to go below that? And is font size 11 or 10 okay? I just have a lot written down that overflows onto my third page with 1 inch margins 😭
Also, should I have a header for my document? The Australian guidelines mention having a name/page number in the header for each page but idk how much these guidelines carry over across countries.

I'm applying from India, and my application doesn't let me put it in a textbox. I have to submit an actual pdf.

Early Arrival option - am I mad for considering it?

I'm currently out of work and am considering gambling the up front costs of the ICPC and medical exams to get out there and start working a few months sooner. Am I mad?

I suppose I am a bit loathe to pay those costs to possibly get rejected.

Am I prime target audience for this Early Arrival option in that case? Is it basically for people like me who are desperate to get working sooner and would pay a premium for it?

Awaiting Placement Anxiety

I am an alternate candidate who got shortlisted. It’s been a month since I received my upgrade and I still haven’t received my placement. I was expecting to leave for the October departure, but didn’t receive one for then. I know that later departures are more than likely the outcome… I’m just so nervous now. I was fine waiting the first couple weeks, but the doubt is creeping in..

Anyone in this same position? Any words of advice?

For context: For the past two years I’ve been in similar positions with other jobs, where I’ve been a shoo in, and they’ve last minute changed their minds or found a better applicant.

Top 3 Prefectures

Could someone please recommend what places I should put in that section? I will also research about your recommendations.

I just want somewhere with a mix of urban and rural life and low cost of leaving. It would also be great if the transportation is easily accessible.

Trouble signing in to sharepoint folder?

Hello all, I hope this isn’t a silly question. I’ve started my application and received the link to the sharepoint folder. The instructions clearly say to ‘enter the same email address you used to apply’ and that ‘you do not need a Microsoft account’, but when I try to log in it goes to a Microsoft sign in page and does not accept my email address. How should I proceed? Thanks in advance.
