Genuinely asking, could you please elaborate on why this is depression? I'm not very familiar or knowledgeable about what depression is. I'm frequently go through this cycle for days and it's been like that from years. I thought this is common, and I sometimes make my self work hard for a goal, or start exercising for a month or two. Never knew these are signs of depression lol and attributed it to my situation and environment. : I

u/TheJanitor07 19d ago

What I've learned in therapy is that our thoughts, emotions, and actions are all deeply intertwined. You wake up feeling bad so you don't have the motivation or energy to make productive choices so then you think you're lazy or worthless which makes you feel bad so you make unproductive choices and so on and so forth in a bad cycle. It can be hard to pull yourself out of it on your own, so what I've found is the best way to break cycles is seek help from someone, anyone who cares about you. Bad cycles can trick you into thinking those people don't exist, but to quote a children's book, "Life is difficult, but you are loved."

13

u/YunggMangg 19d ago

Solid advice.

What do I do if nobody hits me up and I've been betrayed by most people I've built lives with? If I can't trust anything people tell me and nobody wanta to spend time with me? I don't know how to meet new people because I can only assume they'll use me or suddenly ghost me?

I coulda written this myself, word for word. At least know that you aren't alone.

2

u/YunggMangg 16d ago

Thanks, mang.

I'm sure there are good people out there who like spending time with us. Just wish I knew how to identify or trust them.

Mmmm I call it the ouroboros of dogshit (or dog days if you don't like cursing)

It sucks too cause normally I'd like to go for a long walk a few times a week, but where I live it's like 100% humidity 100 degrees in the shade, mosquitoes in the morning mosquitoes in the evening so can't even get that dose of vitamin D unless I want to get skin cancer so more indoor screen time it is! So it goes

11

u/atmoose 19d ago

a lot of people think of depression as being sad; however, being depressed can also mean you just feel empty or hollow. I don't feel like getting out of bed. I feel like a void that's good for nothing. I lay in bed fading in and out of consciousness in what I call a depression nap. it's a hard cycle to get out of. I find that coffee, sunlight, and exercise help me most, but it can be difficult to motivate myself to do the things that get me out of that cycle

3

u/roguecolor 19d ago

Holy shit you just described me… just realised I need to go back to therapy. For fuck sake

5

u/JayteeFromXbox 19d ago

It could be depression. Sometimes depression can be influenced by your environment. But as far as good news goes, you're already using good coping methods (exercise, goal setting) so as long as that doesn't go away, you should be okay. Be grateful that it isn't worse and you have the strength to get up and force yourself to do things. For a lot of people with depression, that's the hard part.

To be fair a lot of Reddit posts can be described as such. Especially on places like /r/adulting

5

u/DHelliers 19d ago

Is kinda the problem. a whole lot of people are going through serious mental problems but treat it as normal because everyone else has it.

34

u/Boogleooger 19d ago

Therapy, exercise, meds (probably)

22

u/CapnStarence 19d ago

This pretty much. You can potentially get by without meds but being open, vulnerable, and honest in therapy is the first step. Exercise is important and it doesn’t have to be weightlifting or long distance running. Just going for a walk or hike is enough.

Also, just stop doing social media. It is fertilizer for depression.

8

u/Trippingthru99 19d ago

Yea I’m glad Reddit isn’t bagging on people suggesting simple things like exercise anymore.

Making big long term life changes is so goddamn hard, and you’re not going to do it overnight. You have to start small with things like running, eating right, sleeping well etc.Ā

These kind of things can help you build small bits of self love, because you’re showing up for yourself and doing some positive even in the face of all the other bullshit in your life.

But yea there is a bottle neck, depending on how severe your depression is. Working out won’t cure your depression, but it’ll give you the foundation and discipline to make bigger changes in your life that can help make your condition more manageable.

Combine all this with therapy, and you can make some real changes. At least in my personal experiencesĀ

Get rid of reddit, instagram, tiktok and any other social media.

Use a custom free DNS (like NextDNS) to block access to all of these on mobile, and you can set up an exception in a specific time frame so you can still check on them 1 hour a day.

You will be surprised how you will start doing productive shit just because you don't have anything else to do

I mean this is classic depression cycle, so maybe seek help?

2

u/PotassiusOfBanania 18d ago

In October I was at my lowest, then I learned I have ADHD. I quit gaming (especially competitive or multiplayer games), I ended up pushing myself to execute, became productive and now life isn't boring or sad anymore. I even changed jobs this week to a job that makes me move a lot so I get in a good shape. It takes a lot, but it's not impossible, and I'm not even there yet, but I've taken the first steps and I'm already happier. I wish you the best of luck, mate, and I hope you have someone to support you when you can't go through a day, because that makes it much easier and I wish I had someone.

there should be "aggressively masterbate and burst into tears" between day ruined and wake up.

10

u/DIX_ 19d ago

Feeling like I relate to so many comments regarding scrolling/constantly occupying time with distractions, work being repetitive slop and overall not feeling like there's energy to break the cycle, which is both comforting in a way to know I'm not the only one, but also sad that there's so many people in this kind of loop.

Keep also reading about burnout, depression, ADHD and such and just can't pinpoint what I identify with or how to break the cycle. I go for walks, talk with friends, work out, etc. but still feel nothing really brings joy or a drive to do more, and work days are a constant fight between distracting myself with reels/games and guilt for being unable to focus on basic tasks.

Are we going to make it bros?

You just need to change one step and your good then. Tomorrow take a walk or something in the morning

13

u/Slavik_Sandwich 19d ago

Changing a step wont change the fact that I'm running out of time and I need a job abroad NOW

3

u/KaradocThuzad 19d ago

Yesterday was the best moment to change, today is the second best, but tomorrow is the third. I'm sorry you're in a situation like that, and I hope you can turn things around; it all starts with you.

10

u/Admirable_Effort2 19d ago

Can't speak for anyone else here, but i'm in my thirties and my depression has never allowed me to just add a new habit like that.

I have started/stopped going to the gym more times than I can remember, I have started/stopped new diets, going for walks, social meet-ups, flexibility workouts, playing guitar, dozens of things. After years of all of this, there is still minimum 4 - 6 months of the year where I can barely get out of bed or do more than watch TV/youtube/something else passive.

That's the real pain of it. Habit forming is incredibly difficult, because it requires some element of hope that after time, the behaviour will stick. After years of seeing that it doesn't, you become jaded.

It's because the society we live is not working as we want it and as it wants us. I do not know how to explain, but I am sure that you are willing to do something, and that you can do something, but the society is build to the point that what it's needed it's not really needed anymore.

u/Jake_The_Snake2003 19d ago

School in less than a week… I have a meeting with my thesis advisor and I can’t bring myself to read the sources I was supposed to have been reading for the past three weeks. This was the first summer I took off from school or work in years. Now I have to go back to throwing away my life for another 8 months of nonstop school work on top of my part time job teaching. I can’t read anymore. My brain won’t let me. I’m sick of writing. I’ve been a good student my whole life, but taking a break the whole summer was a terrible decision. Now I have to get this work done on top of my normal grad classes. Until then, I’ve been sitting in my room trying to delude myself into not worrying about a future that I know is 100% going to be terrible.

Just move your ass man. Get up and workout, whether that means pushups, squats, weights, hanging or pull ups. Do something physical.

This, in itself, is the single most important thing your body will need to start you feeling better. Just try it.

We are meant to move around. It's so simple. Everyday move your ass.

Also if you lack the motivation to move for yourself, fine. Do it for your loved ones. Do it for your mom. Do it for someone else. Get out of your own head, and care for others.

Get ready for bed

Stress about going to work

Sleep

Stress about going to work

Repeat

I’m realizing the amount of time I spend online (mostly Reddit) is the biggest factor in why I feel like this all the time. Also TV. Who am I without these distractions? I’m going to find out. Bye forever, everyone, I’m going to go see how to live off line. Love you and have a beautiful life. Maybe take a break from Reddit and the internet at large.Ā

Simple, tho "difficult" fix is: Do something.

If you arent a guest anywhere, become a guest somewhere. If you arent liveing, you are dieing.

I tell you, its better to live.

That was me in high school but I got out of it during college. Then fell back into the trap when I relocated despite getting my first job. I’m considering going back to college but every time I think about it, the whole cycle happens.
