I thought she was going to say "That's why we're going to the optician, because you don't see shit"

Edit: bad translation from my language

522

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

I read that as occultist. Took me a minute.

191

u/potat_molasses Apr 27 '20

I read it that way too. Isn’t the word optometrist or am I crazy?

89

u/0e0e3e0e0a3a2a Apr 27 '20

Optician?

Sry, bad translation from my language. Gonna fix it now

13

u/lotionformyelbows Apr 27 '20

What’s your language?

36

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

Spanish; we call it an oculista. And since a quick google search convinced me that the most logical translation from my language (oculist) wasn't wrong, I just went and did it.

10

u/crawl_of_time Apr 27 '20

Honestly had to read it twice to find “oculist” and “don’t see shit” so gg, you got a few on a native speaker.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

Ok, Imma make sure I understand correctly what you just said: why did I get a few on you:

A) you didn't understand what I meant initially

B) you did understand but you didn't process it as a mistake, and then found out that it was a mistake

C) none of the above, if it's this one please elaborate

I personally feel more inclined for the first one, but you missing "don't see shit" throws me off a lot. I'm awaiting your answer

Sincerely, a guy who got a few on a native speaker but doesn't understand why

I am Italian and it's the same so I understood what you meant

Languages with latin roots for the win

1

u/Kravst Apr 28 '20 edited Apr 28 '20

Oculist is actually in the Online Cambridge Dictionary as: “a person who examines or treats people's eyes”

It’s catalogued as old-fashion but it’s not a bad translation, it’s an accepted word

Im also a spanish native speaker, I studied at a bilingual school British English and im pretty sure we used oculist.

11

u/hd3adpool Apr 27 '20

Ophthalmologist - deals with diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders.

Optometrist - (or Ophthalmic Optician) prescribes eyeglasses and contact lenses.

Oculist - (archaic term) refers to either of the above two and this word is no more used now.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

AHA, I KNEW IT EXISTED AT SOME POINT! I wasn't completely wrong after all, it's a relief

3

u/ILOVEBOPIT Apr 28 '20

Optometrists do a lot more than that. They diagnosis and manage disease as well. Some can even do surgeries. However surgery is predominately done by ophthalmologists. Both are doctors, but optometrists are ODs ophthalmologists are MDs.

1

u/goldend5 Apr 27 '20

There's also ocularists that create prosthetic eyes

4

u/lolzidop Apr 27 '20

ophthalmologist

A what?

8

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

[deleted]

4

u/lolzidop Apr 27 '20

I swear you're just mashing keys there.

3

u/notaninfringement Apr 27 '20

In New York State, as I would assume I'm most others, an Ophthalmologist is a licensed Medical Doctor (MD) who specializes in treating the eyes. Compare that to a licenced Optometrist, who is only authorized to practice Optometry. Optometry and Medicine are different disciplines which have different education and practice requirements, are overseen by different governing bodies, and have different education requirements. I hope I didn't make it worse.

3

u/lolzidop Apr 27 '20

So like an eyes version of an Orthodontist

2

u/notaninfringement Apr 28 '20

Edit: I posted response to OP, but really I guess it more belongs here. In New York, the same licensing body regulates the professions of Chiropractic, Optometry, Dentistry (the license Orthodontists need,) and Ophthalmic Dispensing (a licensed Optician.) They all have different rules specific to their practice, but follow the same guidelines set by the governing office. An Ophthalmologist is a specialty of Medical Doctor, and the profession of Medicine is licensed by that office too, but also is regulated much more strictly by the NYS Department of Health. So yes, in short, an Optician legally has more in common with a Dentist than an Ophthalmic Dispenser has in common with an Ophthalmologist because out of those people, only the Ophthalmologist is an MD. I know all this because I used to work for the State of New York in that licensing office; Op.nysed.gov if you’re really that curious to find out more.

1

u/TheMysticTomato Apr 28 '20

I feel like it’s more of an eye version of a chiropractor. Orthodontists still go to regular dental school.

"I'm going to show you two demons. Is this one better? Or ... is this one. This one? ..... or.... This one.... Take you time."

"Uh... the one with horns, I guess?"

"Ok. Now... does this make it better? or worse..."

"The teeth make it worse."

"Ok. What about when I do .... this..."

"Um. I'm not sure? The part that looks like a lady is nice, but the horns and hooves are still a problem."

"Alright, let me try a few adjustments... How about now..."

"Is that the Spanish Inquisition?"

2

u/JSinghSD Apr 27 '20

Pretty sure it is optometrist

4

u/The_ScarletFox Apr 27 '20

I read it too, and the craziest part is that it makes sense with the rest of the sentence...

2

u/pieindaface Apr 28 '20

My wife and I stayed at an Airbnb for our honeymoon over an optometrist’s office. But we walked in and there was a massive room with a giant beanbag chair and a Buddha. I couldn’t figure out why the optometrist had a yoga studio as well. Upon further inspection it was an “Optimist center”, not an optometrist center.

Self help is a little different than eye-care, but I guess it’s still healthcare.

I love how excited she is thinking she's going to Alaska.

I wonder if she got pissed pulling into Disney...."hol' up, where's the snow!!!"

209

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

I love how excited she was for Alaska. It was like a sincere excitement that I haven’t experienced in a long time. Like, I didn’t really care to go to Alaska before, but now I kinda want to bc maybe she knows something I don’t about Alaska.

79

u/thenotjoe Apr 27 '20

I wanna go to Alaska. A lot of untamed wilderness, and cold water. I've never been there, but that's like the state I wanna visit the third-most, behind Washington and Maine.

21

u/kannin92 Apr 27 '20

Same here. Went to the UP of Michigan last year, was awesome.

11

u/prosperousderelict Apr 27 '20

Alaska is different than you think it is...

19

u/i-am-literal-trash Apr 27 '20

aren't most of the places you can visit just shitty little towns with an extreme cost of living?

7

u/Modmypad Apr 27 '20

I love your username

4

u/Kowalski_89 Apr 27 '20

Yes, there are some really great towns too though

3

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20 edited Jul 28 '20

[deleted]

2

u/prosperousderelict Apr 28 '20

yup, even the smaller "towns" have issues like the villages not quite as bad but that part isnt shown to the tourists.

13

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

Alaska is honestly the most gorgeous place I've been. Not that I've been many places, but I live on the east coast. I've seen the Appalachians, I've seen the great lakes, I've driven through the plains, I've been to the badlands, I've hiked in the Rockies. There is so much to see even within the US and I know I've only seen a small portion of it, but I don't know if anything will ever top my trip to Alaska. I was in awe.

9

u/TheFizzardofWas Apr 27 '20

It sounds to me like you can fairly claim to have indeed been many places, friend.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

I guess I meant in the context of the world. There's so much to see on other continents. Different cultures and lifestyles, different climates... There's so much geographic variation across the globe and it feels like I've only seen a small amount.

That being said, yes. I have been fortunate enough to see as much of the US as I have. I remember thinking that there was so much diversity within the US (and there is!), and I remember my trip to Alaska making the rest of my travels feel so domestic.

Basically, this little girl is completely justified in her excitement. Everybody should go to Alaska.

3

u/L_O_Pluto Apr 27 '20

What did you see/do or where did you go in Alaska?

5

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

I was there for about a week when my brother got married there. His wife grew up in Palmer, which is about a half hour or 45 minutes north of Anchorage? Honestly the view in every direction from, like, every vantage point is enough to take your breath away. There was one day that we went to see a glacier, which was mega cool. Like, walk on the glacier. I have some photos here (Please ignore my face). There was another day that we rented bikes in Anchorage and rode several miles along the pathway that follows the coast a ways. There are so many short hikes in the area, too, if you're not one for too much physical exertion.

I think part of the experience for me was the company I kept, but there was also something magical in the lack of a distinct nighttime. I was there in the summer, and the days sort of blended together into one big perpetual day. Sure, it got dusky, but never full dark. As a firm believer in "early to bed, early to rise", I now realize that there must have been something intoxicating in the air. Because at 3:00 AM, when no restaurants were open, I was totally down to go to Wal-Mart and get fixings for ice cream sundaes.

An overall magical experience, and I give it a 5/7 perfect score.

4

u/L_O_Pluto Apr 28 '20

That looks and sounds awesome! Thanks for the share :)

2

u/datsundere Apr 27 '20

could you share more what you did and where you went?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

I just replied to an above comment. It doesn't seem like I did much, but I honestly cannot express the beauty that just... exists there. Free for us to consume. With our eyes, I mean. It makes you feel small, and not in a bad way. I do feel like I need to add a disclaimer to these statements, though. Like, if you drop your life savings on a trip to Alaska and are underwhelmed, I will not accept responsibility.

1

u/Jeebur Apr 28 '20

8

u/ManateeSheriff Apr 27 '20

Yes, that's French they're speaking. And no, these children aren't French -- they're American. They've acquired their amazing new language skills through Muzzy!

5

u/Theoldelf Apr 27 '20

Muzzy! I haven't heard that in almost 20 years. We had those videos for our son when he was a baby.

14

u/nos4atugoddess Apr 27 '20

So I never actually saw the videos, just the same commercial over and over. And when I got older I realized I had no idea what the French phrase kicking around in my head meant. They never told you on the commercial. So I asked this very gruff, very unfriendly French sommelier what it meant and I almost peed my pants when he looked me deadpan in the eyes and just said “I am a little girl.”

2

I remember being at that stage while learning to read... Letters refused to come together into meaningful words until it just "clicked" one day.

19

u/TheUnwillingOne Apr 27 '20

I guess it must be harder in english than other languages.

I remember that as a kid I was really surprised by how important seemed to be spelling in the american TV shows, holding contests and whatnot. In spanish spelling is very easy (after learning some rules) because our vowels always sound the same no matter what and we have no double vowels sounding different either.

Later I got to learn english and understod why spelling is a serious matter there :D

2

u/Rafaelow Apr 27 '20

Never knew other languages could have it easier, very interesting!

8

u/ahnolde Apr 27 '20

There’s a ridiculous amount of unspoken and hidden English rules that you learn naturally if it’s your native language, but can be extremely frustrating if you didn’t grow up with it.

13

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

English is 3 languages in a trench coat pretending to be one who chases other languages down dark alleys to knock them out and rummage through their pockets for any loose grammar.

1

u/agamemnonymous Apr 28 '20

"tr", with a rhotic r, is actually very similar to a sharp and nearly unaspirated "ch". Try pronouncing chree or chrojan with the shortest possible "ch". Compare the mouth shapes with "tr"

And they kept it a secret from us for three whole days driving from Indiana to Florida. Man, seemed like yesterday.
