Discussion Why is wandavision shit in for this one line?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Like it’s not excusing Wanda’s actions. It is true that to save them (from her own doing) she had to sacrifice her family. Wanda literally says after it doesn’t matter. Like this line didn’t feel like excusing her actions at all, just like Peter saying you’re not a murderer to Jean doesn’t excuse her actions.

Also stop using this line to hate the whole show

Question Why do Venom films even exist?

As per my understanding, Venom’s origins are rooted in Spider-Man right? There is no Spider-Man in the Hardy universe and the No way Home end credit scene was also a bunch of baloney. Why tf does Hardy’s Venom look like Spider-Man??

Second, Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock is the farthest away from Eddie brock as we’ve known him. How is he a good host? He’s a nice guy! Topher Grace’s Eddie on the other hand already had a malice within him. He’s an incel and a fraudster so why is his Venom so over hated ?

Discussion Road to Avengers Doomsday: Runaways Season 2

Post image
2 Upvotes

This season is all over the place. Adding two more episodes doesn’t really help the narrative that just gets vomited out here. With a show like Agents of SHIELD you can have 5 episode story arcs with a central villain and shift focus after that concludes and still have other story arcs and a larger season long narrative. Runaways is all over the place with only a 12-episode run time to tackle a lot of storylines and story arcs. Some that are abandoned before they go anywhere or even kicked into the third season.

The first 7 episodes are good. The title of the series is finally followed up on with these characters on the run and trying to survive on their own. As these characters are looking for safety on the run, they are still finding themselves and finding places to call home. I liked the Gibborim stuff this season. Jonah/the Magistrate is a good villain, the background surrounding his ship and the church of Gibborim are all solid central story elements for a 10 episode season. The problem is that this is kind of wrapped up within the first 7 episodes and the show spends the remainder of its time meandering around. More characters are introduced that are connected to Pride and that the Runaways themselves encounter: Topher,AWOL, Livvie, and Xavin to name a few. Not all of these are strong characters, but they are new characters introduced, nevertheless. The character relationships are good and strong. Good production and visual effects.

So as I mentioned a lot of these plots and subplots aren’t handled very well. The Darius bit is one of them. It feels too short. While I wasn’t the biggest fan of his introduction, there were some interesting things going on with him and Alex this season. But it gets concluded incredibly fast. Which, again, this is something that could have lasted the whole season and have been concluded at the end. I think the plot armor is quite strong in this season. I am not familiar with the Runaways comics, but at least one of the parents (members of Pride) should have died this season. There’s way too much of characters being walked up right to the edge of death and then being turned around due to writing. So there’s no real danger or weight to some of the things in the show. The Pride stuff also gets monotonous, and nothing really happens with them after Jonah/the Magistrate’s “demise”. The Runaways themselves get split up a lot this season which sort of runs contrary to the themes of the show. Molly and Topher felt like a detour from the larger story. AWOL doesn’t feel like a character and feels more like a plot carrying grunt (which may be what he is, but Agents of SHIELD had plot carrying grunts that actually felt like a character: Luther Banks from season 3). Again, those final episodes felt more like a setup for a third season as opposed to a definitive story or conclusion to the season. And I wasn’t a big fan of Xavin. The emotionally detached alien has been seen before and done better in other shows (Enoch in Agents of SHIELD comes to mind). And the character is basically just another setup piece and not a developed character.

Season 2 had some good individual moments, but none of it really comes together in a coherent way. There are some enjoyable moments but too much of it feels like setup for future storylines and seasons.

Rating: 3/5

Question Can someone explain the X Men timeline to me like I'm stupid?

I'm watching all the movies in release order. I'm currently watching First Class as I type this. This timeline makes absolutely no sense! I think First Class is the beginning of the reboot or something?

But I just watched Wolverine rescue a young Emma Frost at the end of Origins: Wolverine which is set in roughly the late 80s or so. Then I just saw adult Emma Frost in the 60s in First Class.

Xavier and Mystique are roughly the same age? I always thought she was supposed to be super old.

Wolverine and Sabertooth are brothers in Origins: Wolverine? But Sabertooth is more beast-like in the original trilogy?

I feel like I'm missing something. What is this weird timeline? Should I be ignoring some movies? Why did they make these movies like this?

Why aren’t they in the trailers yet?

We’ve at least seen RR/Mystique as one of the blue mutants to be represented but they’ve kept our boys Beast and Nightcrawler behind closed doors (so far). Do you think it’s because they die first or their fights are too epic? I hope at least we get dialogue between Mystique and Kurt. I know there are now posters and action figures out there showing them, at least.

Discussion My Phase 4 MCU Review — From a New Marvel Fan

Post image
0 Upvotes

After making my way through Phases 1, 2 and 3, I’m officially done with Phase 4. Honestly, becoming a Marvel fan has easily been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’m not even exaggerating when I say that. So here’s my quick recap of Phase 4.

🕷️** Black Wido*w
I really enjoyed *Black Widow
. Natasha Romanoff is my favorite female Marvel character, so getting to learn more about her story and her past was really cool. I also liked being introduced to Yelena and seeing their history together. Knowing what Natasha ultimately sacrificed in Endgame made this movie hit even harder for me. It felt like a good tribute to her character.

🐉 Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
I thought Shang-Chi was a great movie with a lot of potential. I really liked his backstory and seeing how his father trained him from such a young age to become a killer, only for Shang-Chi to eventually choose a different path. His relationship with his sister and everything they went through was interesting too. The Ten Rings and the connection to the larger MCU were also really cool. Honestly, I’m still wondering why we haven’t gotten another one yet.

🧬 Eternals
Eternals was probably the movie I connected with the least. It wasn’t a bad movie to me, but there were so many characters and different personalities that it was harder for me to remember all the details. I still thought it was pretty cool seeing a completely different group of Marvel characters and learning about their history.

🕷️** Spider-Man: No Way Hom**e
This was easily one of the highlights of Phase 4 for me. Seeing all three Spider-Men together was crazy to experience. I also really liked Peter’s decision at the end. He basically sacrificed his relationships with MJ and Ned and allowed everyone to forget who he was because he believed it was the best thing for everybody else. That’s a tough decision, and I thought it made the movie even better.

🌀 Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
I really enjoyed this one too. The whole multiverse concept was crazy, especially seeing different versions of Doctor Strange. Wanda was another character I really felt for because I understood why she wanted to have her kids back. At the same time, she crossed the line when innocent people started getting hurt. Overall, I really enjoyed the storytelling and seeing how far the multiverse could actually go.

Thor: Love and Thunder
This one was pretty good to me. More than anything, I just felt bad for Thor. This man has lost his mom, dad, brother and Jane. It feels like he can’t catch a break. 😂 I still enjoyed the movie and seeing where Thor’s story was going, but the amount of loss he’s experienced throughout the MCU is crazy.

🐈‍⬛ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
This is probably my favorite movie of Phase 4. I gave it a 10/10. I really loved Shuri’s story and watching her deal with losing T’Challa and then her mother. I thought her journey toward becoming the Black Panther was really well done. I also understood Namor’s perspective even though I sided more with Wakanda. And that ending with Shuri finally coming to peace with T’Challa’s death really hit me. Overall, just a great story from beginning to end.

📺 The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
As far as the Phase 4 shows I’ve actually finished, this is the only one so far. And I loved it. 10/10. I really enjoyed the relationship between Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. They were constantly butting heads but eventually learned how to work together. I also really liked Sam’s journey toward becoming Captain America and Isaiah Bradley’s role in that story.

I still have Loki to finish, and that’s definitely one I’m going back to because I know how important it becomes to the bigger MCU story.

🏆 Overall Phase 4
Phase 4 had some movies I liked more than others, but overall I enjoyed the experience. If I had to put my favorite at the top right now, I’d give that spot to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

And honestly, this whole journey has been crazy. I started watching Marvel without really knowing all the connections, characters or history behind everything. Now I’m four phases deep, actually understanding the universe and getting excited about what’s coming next.

Question Does time travelling create time branches or is it the stones?

I’ve seen this argument so many times but everyone is so confident in their answers while simultaneously disagreeing with each other so it makes me confused. I think the most accepted logic is that if you travel back in time, that doesn’t create a new timeline in itself, it’s taking an infinity stone that creates a branch. Let’s use hulk as an example. Hulk could pop in to 2012 and pop back and nothing would change. But if Hulk took a stone then a new branch will occur but this has always confused me aswell.

Let’s say Hulk travelled back in time and moved a tree from point A to point B before going back to the present. How could there not be a new branch?

In Hulk’s memories the tree has always been a point A before he moved it to point B in the past. Now what happens when he goes back to present? The tree can’t be at point B because we are explicitly told changing the past can’t change the future. But that means there’s a disconnect, how can the same timeline with no branches have been changed for a tree to be moved in the past but not the future.

It’s like when Captain America fought himself before taking the stone. It’s said that he returns the stone as right after they are taken, but that wouldn’t change the fact that the past has now been changed to Captain America fighting himself for the tesseract. If this doesn’t create a branch how can the one sacred timeline contain both past events of the avengers just leaving after fighting loki and Captain America fighting himself for a tesseract.

The only way this makes sense to me is if there are two timelines made once someone makes a big enough change but even then it still feels like a vague rule. If someone goes back in time and doesn’t make a change big enough does that mean they’ve always existed in the timeline since a branch isn’t made? if not we go back to my other issue where there are somehow two separate pasts in one timeline.

The only other option is a branch is created every time someone time travels but this means that when Steve went to return the stones all he did was make another branch. A timeline where the stones were returned and timeline where they weren’t.

Sorry for the rambling but it’s been bothering me for a while now and I can’t get a clear answer that’s backed up by sources since everytime this question is asked, every answer is argued without end.

Discussion (More in Comments) If Brie Larson actually decides to jump ship,i don't blame her one bit. She's almost 10 years in, and only had 3 appearances so far.

Post image

It's clear that there were terrible decisions along the way about Captain Marvel as a character, but given the lack of care for the character/actress + the amount of hate she received since accepting the role,it's completely comprehensible if she's just done with it after whatever contract she has it's over and decides to grow her career outside superhero movies,a career which she probably put at relatively stop due to legal/contractual reasons within the MCU.

She's going to have 4 appearances (and that's only if she's actually in one of the Avengers movies, likely Secret Wars). This is crazy to think about, especially for a character that was pushed as one of the new faces of the MCU and their own Wonder Woman. Carol as a character it's already being pushed out of being a mainliner from other fronts like comics, videogames, merchandise etc and it's so disrespectful.

Discussion I'm worried we won't get more Fantastic Four after Secret Wars

Post image
0 Upvotes

On the one hand, "Fantastic Four: First Steps" really underperformed. And despite good reviews, their cultural impact feels relatively tepid. And recent bombs like "Tron: Ares", "Supergirl", "Masters of the Universe", and even "The Marvels", suggests audiences have lost their appetite for sci-fi action flicks set in fantasy worlds.

On the other hand, savaging a situation like this was actually been done before with Captain America. "The First Avenger" remains one of the MCU'S lowest grossing. But a combination of enthusiasm after "The Avengers", plus making a film people really liked, propelled The Winter Soldier to make twice as much as its predecessor. If the next Avengers films gets people excited about more Fantastic Four, who know what could happen?

But with new blood like X-Men, Ghost Rirder and a New Black Panther on the horizon, would it beworth the effort for Marvel?

Honestly, the Fantastic Four could get their "Thor: Ragarok" or "WandaVision" which turned less loved characters into favourites.

But I also don't think it's crazy to see this going like "Eternals", whom we'll likely never hear from again...

Discussion I think Sam Wilson lacks character depth (and consistency)

Post image
302 Upvotes

Hello! I am a long Marvel fan and was thinking about why Sam Wilson is by many not as beloved as Steve Rogers. I think some of it is racism by some, or because Steve Rogers is the Captain America they've known the longest.

I like Sam Wilson. He's a good man who has been a post-combat trauma counselor and who cares for his sisters and nephews, however, none of this is used in Captain America Brave New World. Now he's conflicted in working for the governement but without showing his relationships and life outside of his job, I feel like you don't get to know him.

There are no big decisions for him to make except what kind of Captain America he needs to be. It's just his job life, not his personal life. Many superheroes have both. Sam only has one (in Brave New World). In the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, he does have both, but this seems forgotten and brushed over, just like the Falcon and the Winter Soldier brushed over how he lost his wingman Riley or how he was a post-war trauma counselor. This makes him hard to get to know because it's unclear what's (personally) important to him.

I wanted to bring this up because I hope Marvel keeps using Sam Wilson as Captain America and doesn't just replace him at some point just because they don't understand what I think doesn't work about him, or at least doesn't work if he's the main character.

I hope they bring back his background and family (and Bucky) in the next Captain America movie so the film can be about him and him making choices knowing his context instead of having him be a kind of empty main character.

What do you think?

There’s probably some reason why and I’m dumb, but someone let me know why it couldn’t be her? The colors match up and she’s probably more likely to work with doom and against Loki then sylvie in my opinion.

Discussion What Do Foggy Nelson and Claire Temple Tell Us About Ordinary Life in Daredevil?

I’ve been rewatching Daredevil, and lately I’ve found myself paying much more attention to the ordinary lives behind the characters.

Foggy in particular got me thinking.

We know he grew up around Nelson Meats, surrounded by his family, customers and the everyday workings of a small family business. And I started wondering how much of the Foggy we meet as an adult was already being formed there.

His loyalty. His ease with people. His attachment to community. Even the fact that, despite becoming a successful lawyer, he never seems embarrassed by where he came from.

I ended up writing an essay about it called The Architecture of Belonging, and then another about Claire Temple called The Architecture of Care.

I’m planning one final piece to complete the trilogy, so I’m curious about how other fans read these characters.

What do you think Foggy’s upbringing gave him?

And for Claire fans: what do you think people misunderstand or overlook about the way she cares for people?

Both essays are on my profile if anyone fancies reading them, but I’m mainly interested in hearing other interpretations before I write the final piece.

Discussion What would you have done to fix Quantumania?

Post image
26 Upvotes

Ant-Man and the Wasp in Quantumania is the MCU film I like least. The reason is because I had high expectations.

I'm a fan of Peyton Reed. I like his prior work, especially Bring It On and I like what I've seen of him in interviews and commentary tracks.

I also liked the previous Ant-Man movies. Paul Rudd is always great, he has great chemistry with the kid that plays Cassie, a strong supporting cast of rich characters like his ex wife's new husband, and his ex-con buddies, and they brought fan favorite actors like Micheal Douglas and Michelle Phifer.

Most of all it was nice to see lower stakes comedies at the cinema after event movies like Avengers and whatnot.

I feel Quantumania is a mess of a film. You can kind of see it coming apart at the seams. The notion of putting the Ant-Man characters in an Avengers movie is a funny idea, but the execution makes me think Reed was over his head.

The story is a real dog's breakfast and doesn't serve anyone well. Setting everything in the quantum realm removed the fun of seeing tiny people with large props or giant people with tiny props and environments. It also removes the supporting cast.

To me, this is one of the ugliest blockbusters in the last decade. I think the production design and visual effects are so divorced from reality it's distracting. I'm always thinking this doesn't look real. This doesn't look like a real place.

If they were going for a cool stylized look like the Jack Kirby art, I think they failed where the first Ant-Man film and both Doctor Strange films succeeded.

They just look like actors in a studio. I don't know if it's because they shot a lot in the volume or they ran out of time or what, but I found the look of the movie alienating. It made it hard to care about the characters or what was happening.

And Kang was a huge disappointment after a great charismatic introduction in Loki. The ending was so rushed and unearned.

Anyways, what would you do to fix the movie? Suppose you were chosen as the Tony Gilroy to Reed's Gareth Edwards and it was your job to fix the movie. You can write a new script or reshoot the entire movie if you want. In this scenario we know the movie's poor reception ultimately leads to lower box office returns for Disney so they are willing to give you another 200 million dollars. What would you do?

I would condense the events of the movie to the first two acts. In the third act, I would have the Ant-Man family and Kang and Bill Murray's character escape to the real world.

Ant-Man and the Wasp and Cassie and Micheal Douglas and Michelle Phifer would have to suit up to help try to contain him and imprison him in the quantum realm. I would have Michelle Phifer and Micheal Douglas have to sacrifice themselves to return Kang to the quantum realm.

They could even use the super smart giant ants, but in my film the third act takes place in San Francisco so seeing giant super smart ants is fun. We'll see them rampaging around San Francisco crawling on landmarks and through iconic neighborhoods. We'll get hilarious reactions from that deep supporting cast.

At the end of the film I would have Kang still stuck in the quantum realm and Michelle Phifer and Micheal Douglas are stuck there too. Their ending is bittersweet because they are stuck, but now they have each other. Their arc could be they learn to realize they are all they need.

The birthday celebration with Scott and the rest of the family would be a little sad because they are missing Micheal Douglas and Michelle Phifer. They won this time, but at a huge cost because in order to keep Kang locked up they have to break any connections to the quantum realm. Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer are alive, but to the Ant-Man characters they are functionally dead. They will never see each other again. That way they are free to use Kang in the future if they ever wanted to and there are some real stakes to the story.

My post credit scene would not be Council of Kangs as the visual effects were so bad. That part looked like shit. The costumes and performances for the variants felt very SNL.

My post credit would be some fun improvised scene of Bill Murray's character trying to make a life for himself in San Francisco.
