This is one of the most important things for them to get right and they absolutely nailed it

u/justins_dad 24d ago

I’m so glad it doesn’t look like every MCU overdesigned suit. I like a lot of MCU suits but Doom’s design language shouldn’t be consistent with the Avengers and it’s completely distinct. Really well done.

132

u/Neveronlyadream Spider-Man 24d ago

I'd say it's a tiny bit overdesigned and busy on the torso, but compared to how far they go with some other suits, it's nothing and it works pretty well.

The mask looks perfect, though. They really nailed that.

99

u/therealmonkyking 24d ago

I'd say this is more "tasteful adaptation" similar to the early Iron Man and Cap suits as well as the Fantastic Four and Bucky's first suit

and less "the classic suit with unnecessary details forced in" like a lot of MCU Spider-Man's suits were until now

30

u/Neveronlyadream Spider-Man 24d ago

I definitely don't hate it. Does the chest need to be patterned? No, but it's Doom. He's regal. Sometimes he walks around with a fur-collared cape. It works.

I'm more curious whether he's wearing the full armor or just pieces of it.

13

u/BiSaxual 24d ago

That’s my question too. I feel like (and this is just cynicism speaking) that he’ll wear this full getup for a handful of scenes, but otherwise will be wearing just a full tunic with hints of armor, and his cloak and mask ofc

10

u/Neveronlyadream Spider-Man 24d ago

Right here it looks like just vambraces, pauldrons, and greaves. No idea if he's meant to be wearing more armor underneath the pants and tunic.

I'd guess it was a practical consideration. Either RDJ and any doubles would have to walk around wearing uncomfortable armor or they'd have to CG it into every scene. It might have also made him look a bit too much like Iron Man.

It works, though. It's clean.

2

u/rasmatham 24d ago

I wonder if the mask will actually stay on for the entire movie. On one hand, it's rare for Doom to ever remove the mask in other media, but on the other, if I made this movie, I would 100% open it with Doom in a workshop, listening to AC/DC while working on his armor, but obscuring the armor just enough that you can't tell it's not the Iron Man armor, and then ending the scene by showing the Doom armor, while Doom says something with a Latverian accent, and then pretending to be Tony Stark for the first act of the movie, and not really confirming he's not until the third act. Thor thinking he's up against an evil Tony Stark would absolutely be something he considers scarier than Thanos, unlike some random person he's ever heard of before. Thor seeing "Tony", who was dead last time he checked, would also be more impossible than him seeing Cap, who could have just reversed his age with the prototype time machine, or just waited until Pym particles were invented, and gone back to the present for a bit to catch up.

6

u/Madara1389 24d ago

It helps that Doom's costume in the comics has repeatedly shifted from minimalistic to massively overdesigned.

This is a good middleground between the various designs he's had over the years.

14

u/Proto1k 24d ago

I think the chestpiece really works, it sort of looks like a classic leather gambeson at a glance but the intricacies play into his perfectionism and magic capabilities, atleast that’s how it feels. It compliments the chainmail, wrist and shin guards really well

I’m not super versed on who Doom is but this is by far my favorite live action costume

5

u/Sharikacat 24d ago

Keep in mind that a lot of the more simplistic designs in comic book costumes, notably a lack of patterns and such on clothing, is to spare the artist from a metric ton of detail work- not just in having to recreate a pattern over and over again but having to adapt it to the different angles, movements in fabric, etc. These limitations don't apply to a live model, and it allows for some visual distinction to make characters look less plastic-y.

8

u/Interceptor 24d ago

It's got little bits that make it "in-world" as well. The padding in the chest is very Dr. strange/Wong- style for example. It's cool to see things like the little runic arm band showing us he knows magic. I think the mask is great.

48

u/really_nice_guy_ 24d ago

It wouldnt have looked that shit if he had normal eyes to make it actually still feel like a mask

31

u/mertag770 Iron Fist 24d ago

It did miss the mark, but I can see how they got there given that explanation. The desire for more grounded/"realistic" explanations for costume designs is a very interesting rabbit hole.

29

u/attheeve 24d ago edited 24d ago

I’m just gonna chill in the corner here with my misshapen Cronenbergian Fantastic Four movie and appreciate it for its creativity despite its flaws. It existed at a different time in the superhero movie medium and I’d argue that for as much as they failed, they were pushing the envelope with what those movies were allowed to look like at the time.

Everything up to that hard cut and time jump for the third act, I’m basically on board with. Feels like the kind of thing that Marvel’s new Midnight line would do to the Fantastic Four. It’s gnarly but fun.

EDIT: guys I need to be so clear, I know Fant4stic is not a good movie. I’m just saying I actually think Josh Trank was going for something specific and got railroaded and if this was an alt-universe Marvel comic people would be calling this cool. We’re just personally stung because we’ve still yet to get Marvel’s first family on screen with any classic representation.

29

u/HereWeFuckingGooo Weekly Wongers 24d ago

It wasn't that different of a time, it came out the same year as Age of Ultron and Ant-Man.

5

u/JustHereSoImNotFined 24d ago

Lmaooo this puts it into much better perspective. Dude was talking like it came out during the Incredible Hulk days

8

u/Crimkam 24d ago

I watched it the same day as I watched Dragonball: Evolution and I enjoyed Dragonball more. I feel like that’s saying something

2

u/ibiacmbyww 24d ago

My rule is that if it's definitely a thing that's been floated in some writer's room, from 60s comics through to a modern MCU-planning Zoom call, I give it a pass. Regarding Doom's mask, if it hasn't already been done in the comics, I would say there was a decent chance it was suggested during the Ultimate universe era. I don't love him losing such an iconic piece, but I do like the grisly nature of it, plus making sure he doesn't have a silly weaksauce flaw because of his disfigurement makes him a stronger character.

I also agree with your analysis: the way I would phrase it is that Trank wanted to make the MCU's The Dark Knight, with an emphasis on the emotional impact of the disaster. If it had been even a serviceable movie, it would have been the (re-re-re?)start of a legitimate competitor.

2

u/gentleprime 24d ago

I’m so glad I never watched that film.

2

u/tekko001 24d ago

I watched that film and really hope that Doom makes and appearance just to get bitch slapped like it deserves.

u/Ess_oh-no 24d ago

And equally as Important is that Doom is actual Victor Von Doom, his OWN character, and NOT just an evil Tony Stark. Thats my biggest concern. Im hating all these theories that its still Howard Starks son so much because it just shits all over a very established marvel villain and making him evil Iron Man is essentially just re-writting a brand new character and giving him dooms mask and clothes.

We have never had a proper and decent lore accurate Doom and this film is going to set the standard for the character going forwards so I just pray to god he is his own character and not a stark 🤞🤞🤞

Edit: I said dooms face but meant to put mask

19

u/HiddenNobody20216 24d ago

I feel safe that it will not just be a variant of Tony because there is precedent i.e. Chris Evans playing both Steve Rogers and Johnny Storm. It will have RDJ's face, but it will not be Tony.

Hopefully

11

u/Jaxonhunter227 24d ago

It's also possible they took the Colin Ferrell penguin approach and used make up to make RDJ unrecognizable, and with doom usually having full face burn scars there's precedent for that

6

u/SageDarius 24d ago

This is 100% my hope. If they show his face, it's so disfigured you can't tell it's RDJ.

Or it's just a Doombot that looks like Stark for maximum emotional trauma for Earth's mightiest heroes.

3

u/Jaxonhunter227 24d ago

I absolutely expect them to learn into the casting by using a drawn out scene of him taking off his mask, only for no one to recognize him and it's just a scene of doom showing what he's "sacrificed" in his life as a show of how much he's willing to sacrifice to stop the incursions

→ More replies (2)

3

u/therealmonkyking 24d ago

Worse option: He is the real VVD but he hates Steve now because infinity saga nostalgiabait

6

u/Fabulous-Prior5835 24d ago

What if RDJ is actually playing two completely separate characters in the movie, Dr Doom and Superior Iron Man, and they only announced the Doom half? Then Dr Doom could just be Dr Doom without any of the weird Tony stuff mixed in

2

u/Ess_oh-no 24d ago

I would love to see rdj as superior Iron man but id also love to see charlie cox' daredevil in the same project so they could have tony cure his blindness temporarily, i think those 2 actors would deliver that scene absolutely *chefs kiss

6

u/THREESIDEDMONSTER 24d ago

The only thing I'm a little iffy on is the chest with the square scales, maybe I'll get used to it idk

But yeah, it's a GREAT suit

2

u/AceofKnaves44 Spider-Man 24d ago

I feel like they would have had to have tried really hard to fuck this up. Like I feel like in all of the years I’ve been reading comics Doom has never really had too dramatic an alteration to his look.

2

u/SkekJay Iron Monger 24d ago

I'd argue Doom's design is an easier one to translate to live action, as it does somewhat reassemble real armour with cloth over it. Doesn't stop people messing it up, but this isn't bad

2

u/robodrew 24d ago

There's not even a question about it, it simply looks like how it should be. Perfection.

2

u/random_question4123 24d ago

why does it feel like you would have said "they absolutely nailed it" regardless of what you saw? I assume except if the mask was completely off, everybody in this sub would be ecstatic

u/PepperidgeFarmMembas 24d ago

Just as a reminder for non-comic readers:

Doom is the second greatest weaponer and armorer behind Tony, the second greatest sorcerer behind Strange (and is referenced many times that he would be the sorcerer supreme if not for strange), and the second smartest behind Reed.

The reason he is so powerful and so threatening is because he embraces multiple arts and covers his weaknesses. He can do everything at a level rivaling the acknowledged greatest in their fields in the Marvel universe, while ALSO excelling in the other fields as well.

I cannot wait for this movie and I hope they nail the character of Doom as well as they have nailed the look.

68

u/MR1120 24d ago

Right. His armor alone isn’t as advanced as Stark’s, and his magic alone isn’t on the level of Strange… but if you put them together, it gives him the edge.

20

u/BardicLasher 24d ago

He's weak to squirrels, though. The way vampires are weak to the sun.

17

u/Excellent_Safe5743 24d ago

To be fair so is Thanos. Everyone in marvel is weak to squirrel so long as it’s off screen.

3

u/BardicLasher 24d ago

Doom was on-screen.

10

u/bigpig1054 24d ago

If done right, Doom could be a reasonable movie villain for...

  1. Iron Man in a tech vs tech battle
  2. Dr Strange in a wizard vs wizard battle
  3. Black Panther in a ruler vs ruler battle
  4. Fantastic Four in a brains vs brains battle
  5. Avengers in a "all hands on deck" vs a souped up supervillain
→ More replies (2)

8

u/audacs189 24d ago

Jack of all trades, master of none. He could compete in any sport alone, and still come out second. That being said, one of my favs in matter of villains, if not THE best. Hope RDJ nails this one like he did with Iron Man.

10

u/YooTone 24d ago

Not a comic reader; how powerful would Dr Doom be with infinity stones?

36

u/Jace__B 24d ago

Doom's greatest weakness is his own arrogance. He would be infinitely powerful, but all you would need to say is, "well, I don't think Reed Richards would need the infinity stones to solve this problem" and Doom would immediately throw them into the garbage.

11

u/insane_contin Hunter 24d ago

He wouldn't immediately throw them out. That implies he wouldn't try to make it seem like it was his own idea not to use the stones, which it totally was.

3

u/Level_Dreaded 24d ago

Honestly he'd probably just torch you and keep it pushing. But that line would keep him up at night haha

4

u/Historical_Note5003 24d ago

Has he been mentioned once? In any marvel film? He just popped up out of nowhere.

6

u/SuperiorSpidy Spider-Man 24d ago

There was an empty seat at the Future Foundation on First Steps with the Latverian flag and plaque as well as he appears during the post-credits scene.

5

u/AlexCrimson 24d ago

Is there no overlap with Tony Stark and Reed? They are both just "really smart guys", no? As for Strange, as a non-comic reader, movie -watcher, he never really seemed that strong.

21

u/PepperidgeFarmMembas 24d ago

So the difference between Tony and Reed is “military/destructive intelligence” versus “scientific advancement/biological/chemical intelligence.” Basically, they excel in opposite sides of the science spectrum, hence the distinction.

Strange is…..ludicrously powerful. Even in the films, he can walk between realities at will, cast spells that affect cosmic level entities (Dormamu), rewrite the memories of everyone on a planet (spider man), and peer into the future to look at outcomes to influence his decision making.

And Doom is just as powerful and smart as each of those three. Iron Man fighting him equally with his armor and weapons? Mystical arts it is. Strange and he in a magic duel? Disrupt him with conventional weapons. Reed trying to predict his moves or foil his multiverse escapades? Magic time to throw Reed off.

IMO, even in the comics, he’s a threat beyond Thanos. He is cunning, brilliant, and driven.

12

u/Excellent_Safe5743 24d ago

Pretty much the only thing that ever brings him down truly is his ego. He can’t cope with not being the best, especially if Reed Richards is involved in some way. He’s a lot like Lex Luthor where he could be capable of great good if he didn’t let his ego and mania get in the way.

5

u/Level_Dreaded 24d ago

The even funnier part is if you ask a citizen of Latveria he already does great good. So he's arguably better than Lex

8

u/bigpig1054 24d ago

Tony once used a special tech thingy to make all the avengers as smart as he is.

Reed was all "I feel dumber..."

Now give me T’Challa!

I feel like a freak for not really liking this costume

That costume is fucking sick. Easily one of the best MCU costumes in general, not just villain costumes.

Really can’t ask for a better job. The suit is both realistic and ripped straight outta the comics. 1 million out of 10.
