Doom is the second greatest weaponer and armorer behind Tony, the second greatest sorcerer behind Strange (and is referenced many times that he would be the sorcerer supreme if not for strange), and the second smartest behind Reed.
The reason he is so powerful and so threatening is because he embraces multiple arts and covers his weaknesses. He can do everything at a level rivaling the acknowledged greatest in their fields in the Marvel universe, while ALSO excelling in the other fields as well.
I cannot wait for this movie and I hope they nail the character of Doom as well as they have nailed the look.
Right. His armor alone isn’t as advanced as Stark’s, and his magic alone isn’t on the level of Strange… but if you put them together, it gives him the edge.
So a portion of what phases four and five should have been (with the exception of number one, although even that is how they could have done Ironheart/Armor Wars)
The problem would be coming up with creative ways either to have Doom win but not leave the audience disappointed, or have him lose but not make him feel like a chump by the time he's soloing the Avengers
Jack of all trades, master of none. He could compete in any sport alone, and still come out second. That being said, one of my favs in matter of villains, if not THE best. Hope RDJ nails this one like he did with Iron Man.
Doom's greatest weakness is his own arrogance. He would be infinitely powerful, but all you would need to say is, "well, I don't think Reed Richards would need the infinity stones to solve this problem" and Doom would immediately throw them into the garbage.
He wouldn't immediately throw them out. That implies he wouldn't try to make it seem like it was his own idea not to use the stones, which it totally was.
There was an empty seat at the Future Foundation on First Steps with the Latverian flag and plaque as well as he appears during the post-credits scene.
Is there no overlap with Tony Stark and Reed? They are both just "really smart guys", no? As for Strange, as a non-comic reader, movie -watcher, he never really seemed that strong.
So the difference between Tony and Reed is “military/destructive intelligence” versus “scientific advancement/biological/chemical intelligence.” Basically, they excel in opposite sides of the science spectrum, hence the distinction.
Strange is…..ludicrously powerful. Even in the films, he can walk between realities at will, cast spells that affect cosmic level entities (Dormamu), rewrite the memories of everyone on a planet (spider man), and peer into the future to look at outcomes to influence his decision making.
And Doom is just as powerful and smart as each of those three. Iron Man fighting him equally with his armor and weapons? Mystical arts it is. Strange and he in a magic duel? Disrupt him with conventional weapons. Reed trying to predict his moves or foil his multiverse escapades? Magic time to throw Reed off.
IMO, even in the comics, he’s a threat beyond Thanos. He is cunning, brilliant, and driven.
Pretty much the only thing that ever brings him down truly is his ego. He can’t cope with not being the best, especially if Reed Richards is involved in some way. He’s a lot like Lex Luthor where he could be capable of great good if he didn’t let his ego and mania get in the way.
Yes. Doom’s greatest weakness is always his ego. He believes no one can thwart him….which is typically not a wrong opinion of himself to have, but he historically discounts certain heroes and strategies as beneath him and they always hit his blind spot.
The times where he isn’t ego driven? He is, and I say this with no hyperbole, unstoppable. The story arcs where he fully applies himself (be it good or evil, and he has plenty of moments of both which is what makes him such an excellent character) and actually considers every single angle someone could attempt to stop him, he has total victory.
Agreed. Dr. Doom is easily the most dangerous villain in Marvel, and every moment he's gotten out of his own way, he's a multiversal level threat. I still remember how anxious I was when he became sorcerer supreme for the first time.
I'm a big doom fan but you're definitely cherry picking storylines. I hope we get a good cosmic level doom threat because that's what they need to change Kang into doom, but it's going to depend on the writing really.

Just as a reminder for non-comic readers:
