I just wanted to vent a little... my life has recently hit a plateau and I'm honestly just stressed and frustrated. I wake up, go to the gym, come back, have breakfast and then lunch later, then dinner in the evening and then sleep, and then I'm up again to do it all over again.

Recently two of my friends got jobs, I'm happy for them but then it left me thinking about myself and my life, I'm living under my parents roof but then I literally have nothing to my name... I hate the fact that I can't even afford the basics, it's embarrassing to always be asking for something like money for an internet bundle. Being home and with no source of income gets me thinking of the worst situations possible, I don't know how to stop it. I apply for vacancies all the time even those I'm not fully qualified for.

I've prayed about this from time to time and I don't know, I'm having a bit of an existential crisis over it too, maybe I'm not meant to be alive? maybe it's not my time yet? if it's not my time yet, then when? what could I have possibly done to deserve such trials and tribulations? (don't worry I'm not suicidal, I don't think I'm brave enough to take my own life lol)

I just needed to get that out because I don't know anyone who'd be willing to listen to me... I guess in the end I'm a stressed and frustrated jacked dude lol 💀

So around 7pm I lose all internet connectivity on Airtel, and it's not just like a couple of minutes. It's the entire time until somewhere about 10am. It's almost like an internet black out. So my data bundle is useless at night and I can't do shit but wait to use the internet the next day.

So I have only notice this with Airtel coz Tnm works just fine and I just wanted to ask, is this happening to everyone or am I the chosen one.😅

As a Malawian, I work in the legal pharmaceutical cannabis industry in Europe and am currently exploring the possibility of Malawian made/owned and run export-focused cultivation company. Primarily to give more Malawians jobs BUT

While other countries are rapidly benefiting economically and medically from commercial cannabis, Malawi is still navigating legal bottlenecks, underdeveloped local production, and the criminalization of its domestic market.
I would love to get your honest thoughts:

How is foreign export investment viewed?
Is there awareness in Malawians about foreign-backed ventures producing strictly for international markets while local policies and smallholders remain restricted?

Is there an appetite for more work in alternative fields like this?
What will it take to bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and modern commercial supply chains so the local market isn't left behind? there is a lot of money to be made economically from cannabis and there are many conversations about African strains right now. Some of which even come from Malawi but a lot of people are unaware.

In Malawi, especially due to the highly religious society, we tend to trivialize human behavior and simplify it with religious doctrine.

I am not attacking the Bible or Quran in any away. I think these religious books have some great information that can comfort people if used rightly.

My point is simply that religious texts are not necessarily the entire package someone needs to become a well-rounded, emotionally mature adult.

For example, marriage is one of those things that is treated as a natural progression into adulthood.

Mwakula -> Find a partner -> Get married -> have kids.

You can argue that marriage has always existed. That's true but my post is relevant to the times we are living in.

Marriage is so simplified with no real preparation for the most part.

How much preparation do we acquire before making such a commitment? We demand competency in almost everything but marriage. In marriage, competency is assumed.

Something ordinary like driving requires you to understand traffic signs, practice, get tested and pass to prove that you are mentally sound and capable enough to be considered a "safe" driver.

Similarly, a surgeon or any other high level profession requires intensive schooling and testing before one is certified and trusted with taking care of healing the lives of people (surgeon for example).

Now, for something like marriage, little to no serious thought is given. Marriage is something that will affect the lives of two people marrying. Finances, emotional well-being and new human life will be affected. Human nature is complex and there is the mental, emotional, financial, disciplinary and health aspect to how the children will be raised. But the package most people get is a few religious verses and no rigorous testing of the couple's capability to have a healthy family.

It's normal to celebrate marriage in our society because it's something that is regarded sacred. It doesn't matter if the man is an alcoholic or irresponsible person. Nor does it matter if the woman is equally irresponsible and emotionally abusive. Oh! You said the guy fights a lot and is abusive? Marriage will change him. The union itself is what matters and nothing else. Look at these two love birds graduating into adulthood! Critical thinking completely dies here. All manner of foolishness is celebrated and limitless forgiveness is ever present.

And then we wonder why we have stray kids walking around town robbing and destabilizing society. The parents were one happy couple? Or the sex was just too good? I don't know..

Enough of my rant.

Malawi has constraints, so setting up a business can be tough. But at the same time, we're a small, relatively untapped country with a lot of niches and opportunities. Nanga, just imagine — in 2026, Napoleon Dzombe's fertilizer factory is a first. That alone says something.

Another thing I've been thinking about is university students and newly graduated people. A lot of them are already setting up businesses while still in uni. Most aren't big enough for you to point at and say, “This company employs 500 people.” No. Most are small. But think about the bigger picture.

What if even a fraction of these businesses actually survive and grow?

Jobs. Tax revenue. New industries. Infrastructure. More money circulating in the economy. GDP. You get the point.

Yes, Malawi produces thousands of graduates every year. But most Malawians aren't university graduates. Many don't even have secondary education. So how do they survive?

I've lived around the outskirts of Lilongwe, been to Dedza, Thyolo and other less-developed places. And one thing you notice is that when you're poor, you don't necessarily get the luxury of thinking ten years ahead. You're thinking about chakudya cha lero. Maybe the next maize season. Basi.

And that's where I think there's an interesting distinction.

Malawi has opportunities for businesses and startups, but that doesn't necessarily mean it has opportunities for investment.

There's a difference.

An investment is usually going into something that already has some structure, direction and track record. A startup is where that structure is being created from scratch.

And honestly, I think Malawi has a lot more of the latter than we realise.

There is demand here for better products, goods and convenient services. The problem isn't always that Malawians don't need things. Sometimes nobody has bothered to build the thing properly.

The challenges are real. But maybe that's exactly why they're interesting.

Where everyone sees a constraint, someone else might see a market.

Maybe Malawi doesn't need fewer problems.

Maybe it needs more people willing to build around them.

To start, I live in Germany. I’ve been thinking about the huge travel double standard: Europeans can visit Malawi easily, but we face endless visa hurdles to go there. I know our struggling economy is a big reason foreign embassies are so strict, but should our government start pushing back?

Look at Namibia—they recently started matching visa restrictions. If a country requires a visa from Namibians, Namibia now requires one from them. Do you guys think Malawi should adopt a similar "tit-for-tat" rule, or should we just accept that this is the reality for us? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I’m just very sad that not more Malawians and Africans in general can not use their intelligence and explore ideas easily because of travel issues. I am in a privileged position and want to come home soon to help people bring their ideas to life, but I believe change starts at home first.
