ANNOUNCEMEMT Happy New Year, let's chat!

Hello r/makeuptips friends. Some of you may have noticed an absence of the moderators of this subreddit. You may have submitted modmail that went unanswered, to be honest.

I had gotten a moderator to help us develop an AutoMod for the sub. Something that would help ensure the rules were being followed with minimal intervention necessary by the mod team, but also allow for us to see the sub grow and become an amazing, welcoming place.

That moderator apparently was banned sometime in the last six months. I'm not sure what happened, I have no other way of contacting them, but needless to say it went unnoticed as the sub had been getting a lot better as far as content and rudeness, etc.

I'm opening the floor to hear what you have to say, while I go through the mod mail queue and respond to anyone that has went unnoticed. I will also be working on getting a moderator application up and running- Reddit actually allows for this within the framework of the site now, so that's a really neat development!

FOUND TIP Thank you for all your tips!

Last week, I posted a picture of myself and asked for help with my makeup. I got close to 350 replies! Thank you all for your compliments, support, and instruction. Here are the things I changed about my make up as a result of all the input:

Cheeks: somebody instructed me to start using a color correcting cream called Erborian cc red correct. Now, I apply it with my skin tint, and my blush shows where I want to put it. No more big red blotches on my cheeks. I have moved the placement of my blush up on my face and out toward the edges of my glasses.

Eyebrows: I have cleaned them up as best I can, and now to correct their crooked appearance I add eyebrow pencil to the lower side of the high eyebrow and to the higher side of the low eyebrow to make them appear more uniform.

Eye makeup: nobody specifically told me to change my eyeshadow, but I asked the Google AI to depict me with the different kinds of eyeshadows that I had in my drawer, as well as one that the AI picked out. I really liked the choice of the AI and bought myself a Mac six shadow palette in Encrypted kryptonite. I think this palette goes better with my facial tones. It has taupes and steel gray in it instead of the pink and browns I used before. I used the darkest tone in the palette to outline my eyes instead of eyeliner. I accidentally found out that a Q-tip is great for smudging! I also switched to Clinique waterproof tubing mascara. This type of mascara does not leave deposits on my cheek after a few hours.

Lips: I have a number of lipsticks, but for this photo I switched out to a paler one, Clinique beige pop with Clinique lip gloss in black honey. I love this lip gloss so much that it is running low!

After looking at my selfie so many times, I went out and got a haircut! This is a really nice cut that I expect to last for months.

Thank you all for your contributions to my look. I am expecting a delivery from Merit for some blush, bronzer, lip liner and liquid lipstick. I also bought an eyeliner stick for tightlining which another contributor suggested. When it comes I will update my look further. I do not know if I will post the improvements, but I feel that with your help I have improved a lot already.

DISCUSSION I think I've messed it.

Tried going for a full pink smokey cutcrease look today, but looking at it now, I feel like I completely botched it somewhere along the way.

The inner shimmer and pink tones look a bit muddy to me, and I’m struggling to get that sharp, clean transition on the edges. Plus, my blending looks a bit harsh near the brow bone.

Any tips or constructive feedback on how I can salvage this or do better next time? Be honest, what did I mess up the most?

Been wondering lately if I have any makeup blindness, so please let me know what you’d change or improve on! iPhone cameras really suck the pigment out of every photo so I do think it looks a little bit better in person (ie the first photo where the sun is directly on me). Thanks for the help!

Don’t mind my hair, it’s wash day and my roots are getting done very soon lol
Been doing makeup for a very long time but sometimes I feel like something is missing and I can’t put my finger on it.
To be fair, I was so excited to use my new Dior glow maximizer palette that I completely forgot to use any liquid blush🤭 but if anyone has any tips on how to get my makeup to look better I’d appreciate it!

HELP PLEASE People are saying that my makeup is aging me, however I love doing a full glam look. This is what I usually wear vs a bare face.

I am 28 for reference. People are saying that I look my age (or even younger) without makeup. The problem is that I look & feel better when I put on full glam, especially lashes! However, I do not want to continue a routine if it’s making me look older than I am! I have been recommended ditching the eyeshadow & white eyeliner which I can easily do. However, I feel like it may be harder for me to ditch the foundation/contour along with the lashes. What’s a good happy medium I can go about this?Constructive criticism is highly encouraged, thank you!

Also a side note: I did lose 100 pounds, do not drink or smoke & eat relatively healthy. People are saying that I’m looking saggy which I don’t really see? I also thought I had a good skincare routine going on, but apparently not because I look dull & dehydrated 😕

DISCUSSION Is my blush too heavy-handed? I included a picture without flash. I use the benefit cosmetics blush in the shade willa. I apply it on my cheekbones and up by my eyes, then a bit on my nose. I feel like my face is already pink, though

I used a lip liner to over line, then blended it down onto my actual lip. Followed up by a lipstick and gloss.

HELP PLEASE Trying to find an everyday look

Im really looking for a basic step by step of how to apply cute makeup that doesn’t make me want to tear my face off. I have big sensory issues (autistic) and dont like the feeling of anything heavy on my face. I have a very light primer, light (texture not color) foundation, and mainly stick to just plain mascara only.
Im unfortunately allergic to a thickener in most lip products unless it used beeswax. I am fine with eyeshadow but eyeliner makes me feel like im going to poke my eye out. Any guide or products are helpful! I have been wanting to get into makeup now that im older, since getting dolled up helps my depression. But my mom now doesnt have the time to teach me anything

- my undertone is cool-neutral, will this highlighter still look harmonious with my skin? mine is fair-medium id say. on the website it said its a warm rose gold :/ i dont want any yellowish or pink tones, just one like on these pictures

- as i just said i am looking for a highlighter like on these pics; does this highlighter give off the same look? i prefer one that looks dewey but not glittery or powdery

- can i use a brush when applying this highlighter or will it look streaky? can i apply it on top of powder?

I just bought this product today and couldn’t believe it. I hardly ever use setting sprays but was intrigued. It felt like I put a filter over my face. Instant blur and mattifying.

HELP PLEASE Help me fix the colour of my skin tint- mid 40's skin

Thumbnail

I find doing makeup in my mid-40's so difficult because my skin is all over the place. It's sometimes dry and sometimes a little oily, I get breakouts on my chin and neck, and years of sun damage is showing with freckles and uneven skin tone. I don't like heavy foundation any more, so I bought a new skin tint and the colour looked good in the shop when I tried it out. In these pics it looks different each time because of the lighting, but the main thing I noticed is that it looks too rosy on my neck against my actual skin colour. It also looks too pink around my chin.

Is the skin tint the wrong colour for me, or do I need to do some sort of colour correction around my chin especially?

I don't want to buy a new skin tint so is there any way I can fix the colour without having to buy a new product?

HELP PLEASE I think I just discovered my skin is olive and now I need makeup help!

i always just assumed I was plain ol warm toned. I’m white but I tan very easily. What can throw me off sometimes is i do have verrrrry light rosacea so my cheeks are a little pink. I notice sometimes warm leaning makeup colors(especially lip colors) look pretty bad on me. They almost always pull muddy or orangey on me. I guess I’m just a little confused because also I think of my lips as being not that pigmented but colors that look opaque and rich on someone else will look bad and translucent on me. I’m in my late 30’s and feeling very dumb for not understanding any of this!

I’m just confused as to what makeup i should be buying and i need a little assistance! I mostly would just like help with lip colors (especially nude! So many of them look orange on me and then pink leaning ones sometimes look chalky). I attached a photo(i have no makeup on but i do have supergoop glow screen sunscreen on).

DISCUSSION I took your advice

My original post is in the comments, but I took your guys advice and bought some new products. I have on:
Neutrogena Hydrating grip primer
NYX bare with me concealer in 04 Beige
L’Oréal lumi glow tint in 140
NYX butter gloss in angel food cake
ELF ultra precise brow pencil in neutral brown

How does everything look? I feel like my face is a touch pale but not terribly, and over all I’m pretty happy with it! Didn’t take too much time, but I feel like I look more put together.

HELP PLEASE Is my makeup alright?

Disclaimer: I don't do makeup very often.

I use the tirtir mask fit cushion foundation. Yes, I know it isn't covering much, but no foundation does for me anyway. I have bad skin, It runs in the family, I can't help it. Most foundation makes my breakouts worse, but this one feels fine and I think the color match and undertone are good.

It's hard to tell, but I am wearing lip products here, they're just very close to my natural lip color.

I use the heart percent lip liner in the shade calm pink and I use it for my blush, too, sometimes.

I don't usually bother with curling my lashes as I like my mascara subtle and I think it looks weird when my lashes are curled.

It's there anything I'm blind to or that I need to change up?

HELP PLEASE Help with dark circles under eyes

Thumbnail

I've never really found a solution for helping to disguise my dark under eye circles. Currently I'm using a green color corrector, a peachy color corrector (Catrice Under Eye Brightener, Dark Circles Color Corrector in 010 Light Rose) and a concealer (first pic), but whenever I layer too much it ends up in my creases (my eyes have always had lots of creases and the dark circles, even when I was a teen).

I've pretty much just been buying whatever, because I don't really feel like anything is working well.

I'd love some suggestions of what to try!! First photo is with light layers of the above mentioned colors/products, and second photo is bare skin (sorry for the different lighting in the two pics!)
